Come to a deeper understanding of the scope and meaning of Jesus Christ's ministry in Volume 2. Through Elder McConkie s fluent writing style, you ll discover how every word the Savior spoke, every action He took, and even the timing of His experiences are wonderful parts of the Master s divine plan. Written by a man of God who was called as a special witness of Jesus Christ, The Mortal Messiah examines the mission, ministry, and accomplishments of our Savior.
Bruce Redd McConkie was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
McConkie served in the First Council of the Seventy of the LDS Church from 1946 until his calling to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1972, where he served until his death in 1985.
During his service as a general authority, he published several doctrinal books and articles and wrote the chapter headings of the LDS standard works.
McConkie received a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Utah. He spent his childhood between Monticello, Utah; Salt Lake City; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. He married Amelia Smith (1916 - 2005), daughter of Joseph Fielding Smith.
I think I got a little confused as I read Book 3 before I read Book 2. So I will now start reading Book 2. I think it is good that I know a lot about what happens in Book 2. We'll see. I might be surprised.
Whew. Picked away at this book like a bird eating a million seeds one at a time. I don't mind the length of time this book series is taking me because there is so much depth to the content. Really comes alive as you read and then ponder what you've read. As always, I copied and pasted some key passages that moved me into my Evernote account. The author really quotes a lot from Eddersheim and Farrer books on the same topic so I'd be interested in reading them as well. This is a deep dive so take your time, don't rush and it will be a wonderful addition to coming closer to Christ.

Now that I have read this volume, in the middle of the complete set, I will have to go find the others and read them as well. Br. McConkie offers some great insights into the meaning of the life of the Messiah which a casual reading of the scriptures will not reveal. Much of what is printed I have already known or understood but there is much also that was new understanding for me. Read it with an attitude of willingness to learn and you will gain great insight into the life of Christ.
If you want to read a scholarly book on the life of Christ this series is for you. I started it some time ago and will finish the complete series including Book 4 and the Millennial Messiah. However, I find McConkie very wordy and repetitive. It is not something that I can sit down and read for a long period of time which is why it takes me so long to get through each of his books. It took me over a year to get through this one.
This book has a lot of good commentary, but I didn't enjoy or learn quite as much from this volume as the previous ones. It is a dense book. Still definitely worth reading though.
I am enjoying this series so much. I am reading them along with Talmage's Jesus the Christ. It helps me appreciate our savior Jesus Christ so much more.
This was a fantastic book on the most wonderful and marvelous of all subjects. Bruce R. McConkie does a tremendous job documenting the Savior's ministry from Bethlehem to Calvary. He takes each episode, parable and encounter and breaks them down, discussing the eternal truths taught. He also relates them to what was going on at the time with the Romans and the Jewish leaders, who sought at every turn to destroy Jesus. They gave him one unanswerable, entrapment question after another, yet he found a way to silence his critics and teach His pure gospel at the same time.
Great as a reference book for Mormons, but tough to read all the way through. It was written to provide a more current treatment of the Articles of Faith of the Mormon Church than that by James E. Talmage in Jesus the Christ.
Opening in Matthew 15 (Mark 7, Luke 9, and John 7), McConkie expounds the doctrine that Christ teaches, strengthens the reader's soul, and illuminates the fire of the gospel. It continues through the Sermon on the Mount, and increased opposition from the corrupt leaders, and finishes with Jesus' final teaching in the Temple and the Olivet discourse to the Apostles.
I just love Bruce R. McConkie's books. I learn so much every time I read them. There is not another series of books about Jesus Christ and his life that is more detailed and more referenced then this series. So much to digest. Love it!!!!
