The Second Coming-is there any serious Christian who has not pondered the significance and consequences of that long-awaited, glorious event? Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Council of the twelve, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, expounds on this topic in all its magnificence and in his usual flowing style. The crowning work of his trilogy on the life of Christ-preceded by The Promised Messiah and The Mortal Messiah (in four volumes)-The Millennial Messiah lays out before the reader every pertinent bit of information to be gleaned from the four standard works and inspired prophets.
Bruce Redd McConkie was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
McConkie served in the First Council of the Seventy of the LDS Church from 1946 until his calling to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1972, where he served until his death in 1985.
During his service as a general authority, he published several doctrinal books and articles and wrote the chapter headings of the LDS standard works.
McConkie received a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Utah. He spent his childhood between Monticello, Utah; Salt Lake City; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. He married Amelia Smith (1916 - 2005), daughter of Joseph Fielding Smith.
This is the 3rd book in Bruce R. McConkie's The Messianic Trilogy. Book 1 The Promised Messiah, deals with the Messianic prophecies; Book 2 The Mortal Messiah: From Bethlehem to Calvary, deals with the life of Christ. This, the 3rd book, The Millennial Messiah attempts to set forth what the scriptures themselves have to say about the great and coming day. It speaks "of the events precedent, the events concurrent, and the events subsequent. . . of what must occur between Christ's first and second advents, of the plagues and wars attending his return, and of the peace and glories that shall prevail during his millennial reign." (quote from McConkie's Preface to book).
Book 2, The Mortal Messiah, actually consists of 4 volumes, thus The Messianic Trilogy is actually a 6 volume set.
This book helped me tie the prophecies of the scriptures together in a pattern of events that I could see and understand. I read this book on Sundays and so this is the culmination of reading that I started in September of 2007.
It has been a long but very worthwhile read. I finally finished reading Bruce R. McConkie’s “The Millennial Messiah.” Words can’t express the feelings I have as I look back on this book. I copied and pasted many notes and learned quite a bit which will merit a return study. The last few chapters and especially the very last chapter are very inspiring regarding conditions that will exist during the millennium as well as when the earth becomes a celestial abode. Fifty six chapters later I can say that I am a better and more sober man in light of this information. I have a stronger desire to live the gospel and land my soul next to my Father in Heaven and Savior and live eternally with them.
When I chose to read this book, I hoped it would help me learn more about the Savior. I was reminded of His power and majesty. I was stirred to be prepared for His return. However, I learned more about the signs of the times, Armageddon, the Millennium and the Second Coming than I learned about Jesus Christ.
The book is very long and repetitive. Certain ideas and scriptures are cited over and over again. That's fine for learning, I suppose. The book is grand. It's fine. It's just not the easiest to read. It helped that I took it in small doses.
7.5/10 I feel like the difficulty of this a bit over exaggerated. I'm as dumb as the next guy, but this really wasn't to hard to get through. I think what throws some people off is that McConkie is super thorough, even when it comes to ideas and doctrine that a lot of us have grown up learning. I did enjoy that amidst the common knowledge he just throws in a little nugget of deep doctrine every once and a while, to make sure you're paying attention. Of course, a few chapters were just gripping, must-read end of the world stuff. Every once and a while Bruce openly gives his speculation on a few things and I'm not sure I agreed with each of those (Who am I to question an Apostle?), but overall he sticks to the scriptures and I certainly felt enlightened reading his words.
I final book in a series that has taken me a while to read. I was very much intrigued with the knowledge and depth the author goes into the research of his books. A bit repetitive. Everything could have been said in less pages, but repetition is good at times. For this reason it is a 3 star rather than a 4 star. I love the insight the author brings to the scriptures. The scriptures seem so easy to understand when he explains things. I loved my time reading this book. It is a little difficult to read cover to cover but I did enjoy it.
This is not an easy book to read but well worth reading. McConkie's writing style takes some getting used to. He was a great biblical scholar and I was intrigued with his ability to but together passages found in various places and sometimes really obscure Bible books.
Beautifully written and with such strength of Spirit. I gained so much understanding in his writing and enjoyed the joy with which he writes of the days to come.
A wonderful book full of scripture and references of what will happen at the end of the world and what it will look like looking into the 7th thousand years. It talks about the billions of children born during that time and how the earth and everything on it will be like it was in the Edenic time where nothing dies but people live to 100 and are changed in a twinkling of an eye. There will be learning for us and teaching from Christ and God. We will learn the great mysteries so we can become like God to be able to live in the Celestial sphere. What great incites this book gave.
Since it took me a year and a half to read this you can understand why I didn't rate it very highly. It was not an easy read and I don't know how he took so long to say what he did. Very scholarly work and didn't hold my interest. Of the 6 books he had in the set, the first and the 6th were the ones I really had trouble pushing through. And the other four, I preferred Talmage's Jesus the Christ for readability. However, his strong testimony that Jesus is the Christ, the Redeemer of the World comes through all his writings.
This book is very good. I liked it more than the Mortal Messiah but I liked Promised Messiah the most. Elder McConkie's writing style is a little dense, but he does a great job making connections with numerous scriptures and presenting all the various doctrines in an orderly way. This book definitely helped me increase my knowledge and understanding of many subjects relating to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
And the Savior will come in all His Glory. Will you be ready?
If you have ever wondered about the 2nd Comiming and the millinium to follow, The I highly reccomend this book.Written by a Apostle of the Lord Inspired to do such a work.
Inspired and Timely for our day of living in the latter end of the latter days preparing to receive the Lord Jesus Christ at His second coming. I love and thank Brother Bruce for his dedication to detail in this published work.
Though McConkie's style and perspective are hard for some to palate due to his confidence and authoritarian voice, one cannot argue that the doctrines he supports through scripture are both well-placed, insightful, and significant. Those wishing to understand the Second Coming would do well to read this book with the Spirit as their guide to bridge the revelatory progress since it was written. Straightforward, easy reading.
Great as a reference book for Mormons, but tough to read all the way through. This book was written to provide a more current treatment of the Articles of Faith of the Mormon Church than that by James E. Talmage in Jesus the Christ.
This was an intense but very valuable read. My husband and I read it aloud each evening and it took us about 6 months to read because we needed to take it in small chunks and then ponder.
You will find all kinds of deep and important topics that are important to this day and age when prophecies are being fulfilled. If you want to know what is yet to come and try to get a handle on where we are ... then you need to read this book.
Okay, so I didn't read this whole book. It's more of a reference type book, and I basically just checked it out so I could read one chapter. I loved the chapter that I read, and even made myself a copy of the whole chapter to have on hand as a reference. I did skim some other topics, but to read this whole book cover to cover would take me years. ;)
There are 3 in this series, The Promised Messiah, The Mortal Messiah, and The Millennial Messiah. This is a quite large book that will take me a while to finish. Right now I am reading bits and pieces. It has great info. as the books from Bro. McConkie always do.
I've been planning to read this series of books, like, FOREVER! But, the more the daily paper begins to read like the wind-up chapters of the Book of Mormon, the more I feel a need to separate fact from myth regarding the Last Days. It's time to sit down and do some *serious* study. . . .
This is a well-informed trek through the scriptures about the Millennium. He includes some conjecture about what certain passages mean - but they are all clearly mentioned as such. There are lots of repeated descriptions, so I felt like I was rereading entire paragraphs from page to page.
I just learned that the lost ten tribes do not currently exist as a gathered body, but they are being gathered from all over the world into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
