About the author

Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Phew. Okay, give me a second because this volume was quite something! O_o
I honestly didn’t expect the series to go into this kind of direction but apparently it is and I still don’t know if I like this development or not?! Tsugumi Ohba obviously decided that it would be best to throw all caution to the wind and to shake things up. And when I say “shake things up” I mean that no stone remains unturned. I have whiplash from all the plot twists and the author’s choices!

I don’t want to spoil anything but it’s safe to say that after they arrested the new Death Note owner the book finds its way into the police’s hands and the special unit that’s working on Kira’s case is confronted with seeing Rem. Because as we all know, the person who holds the Death Note sees the death god the book belongs to and for some reason I never thought that this could be a future plot option! You might say Ohba surprised me once again.

But that wasn’t the only surprising thing in here! We got one revelation after another and by the time, the author was done with them my head was spinning and my mind reeling! I really, really don’t want to spoil anything, but I can say that we have a leap in time and that there are two new players by the end of the volume. They are introduced in the second half of the book and I don’t know how I feel about them. Near and Mello seem to be very different and I have no idea how they’ll fit into the overall plot.

Near seems to be a thinker like L., is cautious and thinks about ten steps ahead and Mello seems to be on the more impatient side of things and makes rash decisions. There’s always some intention and thought behind those decisions, though, so I honestly dunno where those two will lead us. As much as I gleaned from what is happening, they seem to be on opposing sides, though. Which is interesting because they both have a connection to L. So yeah there are two new players in town and I’m convinced they’ll mix things up.

As for the author’s choice: OMG! I honestly didn’t expect the author to kill off L. I mean from a storyteller’s perspective it makes perfect sense because their cat and mouse game had to end at some point! Still! The way L. died was so unspectacular and after all those volumes I expected something more?! The way it all came together in the end was brilliant, though! I mean wow! How did Light come to all those conclusions?! I guess to assume Misa would either know L.’s real identity or make another deal with Ryuk in order to be able to tell Light, Ryuzaki’s real name was to be expected. Considering a death gods eye sight comes at a high price and costs half a person’s lifespan, I didn’t expect her to give it up that easily for Light, though. I mean she already gave half her lifespan to Rem, which means if she would have gotten 80 years old she already had only 40 years left. And then to make that deal with Ryuk again?! It would mean another 20 years of her life. So that leaves us at 20 and Misa is like what? 17 in the story?! It was extremely irresponsible but considering Misa’s reckless character, it was still appropriate. >_< Light took a high risk with that plan, but it eventually worked out in his favour because he was right with one thing: Rem loved Misa and was ready to die for her. Rem sacrificed herself for Misa and wrote Ryuzaki’s real name into her Death Note knowing full well that she’d die too if she did that. Rem was backed into a corner by Light and had no other choice if she wanted to protect Misa. The positive effect is that Misa probably gained half her lifespan back now that Rem isn’t around anymore. But I don’t know if it actually works like that. Mhm… Either way I never saw THIS coming! Light took a high risk but it paid off for him in the end. Well, at least until Near and Mello appeared. xD But I’m still not over L.’s death and I think I’ll never be. Like OMG!

So, yeah, this volume had it in it and I was NOT prepared for any of the things that happened in here. I wonder if Light really likes Misa now or if she’s still just a means to an end, but apparently they’re still together so that counts for something?! I guess Light might enjoy Misa’s company as long as he gains an advantage from it, but I’m pretty sure he’d throw her under the bus if it would further his plans. He’s calculating and cold like that. And let’s be real here: Even L. was surprised and bewildered by Light’s choice to be together with Misa for real after everything she did for him. Haha! Those two were clearly similar when it came to human connections. *lol*

Anyway! This volume threw me for a loop and all the cards were reshuffled. I don’t know if that’s going to be an advantage for the series development or not. The jury’s still out! It definitely opens up many new possibilities, though, and if you ask me, that’s always a good thing! ;-)

Let’s hope I can pick up Volume 8 from my library soon! I’m ready to be mind-blown again!

I finally got hold of a “Death Note – Volume 7” copy!
Since the last volume was so suspenseful and ended on quite a cliffhanger I’m hopeful this one will continue to be great.
I mean the plot picked up again so I’m very optimistic about this volume!

Fingers crossed this will be good again!

Volume seven was definitely a lot better than the previous few volumes. It was still fairly slow though and I don’t feel much for these characters or this story anymore. However, some action finally occured in this volume and the plot has drastically changed. I also have a feeling that I’m going to like Near a lot. He seems like L, but he somehow seems more likeable to me. I’m interested in seeing how things play out and will most likely continue with this series.

I'm with Caroline. First half was AMAZING, a continuation from Vol 6 which knocked my socks off, but as soon as L died and Light had no more opposition, both the format and the style changed. I was bored out of my mind for about twenty pages, which is the first time that happened this entire series. I have to say the art on the pages where L dies is STUNNING. The last look Light gives him, the glazing of the eyes, the last wavering where you still get the feeling that despite the fact he just killed him, L considers Light the best friend he ever had. (Okay okay maybe I'm reading a LITTLE too into this!) What I want to know though is why REM would kill herself for Misa? I mean when she first said she would it felt more believable, but Misa and REM's connection hardly held strong anymore. Meh, who knows.

BIGGER PET PEEVE: GAH!! I AM GETTING SO PISSED AT THE PORTRAYAL OF WOMEN IN THIS...or maybe even lack of portrayal. When the two successors of L stepped forward I thought "OH good, two genius women who will likely have fully formed characters! Finally!" BUT then I realized both were being referred to as "he". The only women in these books are victims, ditzes, smart-though-always-the-first-to-be-killed, or just plain ornaments in the backgrounds. It drives me CRAZY. Seriously. If there isn't a strong REAL female character by the end of all these books I am throwing them all out a window.

This was NOT what I was anticipating! I had no idea what I was getting myself into! I'm not sure I agree with where this is going. L has passed away! The cat-and-mouse game between Light and L is the entire point of the first seven chapters. Then, in the seventh volume, Light manages to assassinate L.

"What just happened?" I wondered as I finished the book. WHY DID THIS TAKE PLACE???

I cannot stand reading/watching Death Note anymore. I absolutely hate Light and I absolutely despise Misa. Light is a fucking coward psychopath. Misa is the most stupid girl in the universe. And as they are the main characters now, with no Ryuuzaki behind them, there is no point in reading/watching this anymore.

This chapter ruined my weekend... I cried.. a lot :/

And I am not saying the manga is bad... it is still amazing, with so much suspense. Just... not for me anymore, as I can stand Light anymore and I've lost my dear L :(

Esta ha sido definitivamente mi volumen favorito.
Entre las maquinaciones de Light :O, el regreso de mi querido Ryuk <3, las muertes de mis queridos L y Rem T_T y la introducción de Near y Mello. Esto no ha sido más que un no parar de tensión e intensidad. :D

-It was great that Light finally got back his memories and the notebook, and all his past plotting and planning was fully revealed. He was more intelligent and cunning than I originally thought. He managed to play the long game and engineer things so he could come out on top. It was impressive how he predicted everything L would do, his plan worked perfectly. Although, it was pretty obvious that he only just managed to beat L, he'll have to be on top of his game all the time to carry on getting away with his crimes.

-Still loved Misa. I hated how Light was pulling her strings and playing her though. I really don't want her to end up being one of his victims.

-Liked that Ryuk was back, I missed his back and forth with Light.

-I was glad that L and Light's battle of wits ended, it went on for long enough. I guess it was sad that L died, but it was obvious that either him or Light would end up dead.

-The time jump and Light's new opponents, Near/the new L and Mello/the mafia, seemed promising. Hopefully, the both of them will be able to challenge Light even more than L ever did.

Well well well, Light was two steps ahead of everyone even L. At the end of the previous volume L and his team had tracked down the new Kira and successfully apprehended the criminal. L gets his hands on the Death Note... which unfortunately he hands to Light who gets back his Kira memories along with a lengthy flashback showing us the plans Light made before intentionally losing his Kira memories.

I still can't believe L is dead... surely this is just an elaborate hoax and he's secretly alive!?

It was logical, I know but, L can't just die that easy! It was equivalent when both Light and L were competing but now, Light can't just win! Even if L is replaced by a successor who's just as smart as L once was.
