Caryl Churchill
94 books226 followersCaryl Churchill (born 3 September 1938) is an English dramatist known for her use of non-naturalistic techniques and feminist themes, dramatisation of the abuses of power, and exploration of sexual politics.[1] She is acknowledged as a major playwright in the English language and one of world theatre's most influential writers.
Her early work developed Bertolt Brecht's modernist dramatic and theatrical techniques of 'Epic theatre' to explore issues of gender and sexuality. From A Mouthful of Birds (1986) onwards, she began to experiment with forms of dance-theatre, incorporating techniques developed from the performance tradition initiated by Antonin Artaud with his 'Theatre of Cruelty'. This move away from a clear Fabel dramaturgy towards increasingly fragmented and surrealistic narratives characterises her work as postmodernist.

آشنایی با یه نویسندهی جدید و جالب که دغدغهش زنانه و چی از این بهتر، مدیونِ نمایشگاه کتاب امسال.
سبکش موردعلاقم نیست. صحنهها و شخصیتهای زیاد که صرفا بهم مربوط نیستن اما هوش و تلاش نویسنده رو توی نشون دادن احساسات و آسیبهای زنانِ ۱۶ الی ۹۰ ساله رو در سیستم سرمایه داری جهان با نابرابریهای جنسیتی رو نشون میده که خودش تحسین برانگیزه. پس لذت خوندن نمایشنامه ۳/۵ ارزش خود نمایشنامه ۵/۵
"باتلاق فن" با الهام از مصاحبههای واقعی و روایتی مستندگونه، مبارزات زنانی را که در چنگال فقر، انتظارات اجتماعی و آرزوهای سرکوبشده گرفتار شدهاند، با صدایی پرقدرت روایت میکند.
داستان در یک جامعهی روستایی کشاورزی میگذرد، جایی که زنان مجبورند در ازای دستمزدی ناچیز، ساعات طاقتفرسایی را در مزارع کار کنند. نمایشنامه از مجموعهای از صحنههای بههمپیوسته تشکیل شده که زندگی شخصیتهای مختلف-مادران، دختران، عاشقان و کارگران-را به هم مرتبط میکند. چرچیل در این اثر، درونمایههایی از مبارزهی طبقاتی، نابرابری جنسیتی و سرکوب عاطفی را برجسته میسازد.

Literally have not stopped thinking about this play for 4 days like it IS about the land it IS about the class tensions it IS about the trauma it IS about the incredibly unstable role of the Mother it IS about the communal experience

تراژدیای که بر زنان چهار نسل در انگلستان در باتلاق فن گذشته و عصیان و تنش رو به فزونی که انقلاب را متصور میسازد. در عین موجز بودن و تعدد شخصیت، چرچیل توانسته به شخصیتها عمق دهد.

راستش خیلی یهویی این نمایشنامه به چشممون خورد و چون از این نویسنده (کاریل چرچیل) باید “سالار زنان” رو میخوندم این کتاب هم برام جالب شد و دوست داشتم از چرچیل حداقل دوتا کتاب بخونم. (که با پایان این نمایشنامه قطعا بیشتر از چرچیل خواهم خواند.)
به عنوان کسی که اول “سالار زنان” رو از چرچیل خوندم قطعا با توقع خیلی زیاد و بالایی شروع کردم به خوندن باتلاق فن که خب خداروشکر ناامیدم نکرد و از خوندش لذت بردم!
سبک همیشگی چرچیل و توجهش به زنان و مشکلات و دغدغههاشون و در کنار اونها اشاره به کاپیتالیسم و نظام سرمایهداری!
نمایشنامه یک نمایشنامهی پر از شخصیته!
که شخصیت تک تکشون تحلیلهای زیادی داره و فکر میکنم چرچیل جوری مینویسه که خواننده رو خیلی به فکر فرو ببره!
و خب مشخصا موضوع اصلی «زنها» هستن!
توی باتلاق فن در رابطه با زنها میخونیم زنهایی از دورههای سنی متفاوت و نسل های متفاوت (از آیوی ۹۰ ساله تا شونای ۶ ساله!)
نمایشنامه دارای ۲۱ صحنهاست.
و با وجود اینکه به تکتک شخصیت ها میپردازد اما غالب نمایشنامه در رابطه با شخصیت وَل نوشته شده.
و شاید میشه گفت شخصیت اصلی داستان وَل و مسائل و مصائب زندگیشه!(از درگیری انتخاب بین فرزندان و معشوقهاش گرفته تا ارتباطش با مابقی کارگران در باتلاق و رابطهای که با معشوقهی خود دارد و حتی زندگی زنان دو نسل قبل خودش یعنی مادر و مادربزرگش!)
راستش ارتباط وَل با کسی که دوستش داره یا همون فرانک برام جالب بود.
توی صحنهی پانزدهم قسمتی رو داریم که ول میگه -من ترسیدم.
و فرانک در جوابش میگه -کِی؟
وَل -وقتی ترکت کردم.
فرانک -من وقتی برگشتی ترسیدم!
وَل -الان میترسی؟
فرانک -بعد از اینکه رفتی، فکر کردم خودم رو بکشم.شانس آوردم این کار رو نکردم.
وَل -تو از چی میترسی؟
فرانک -از دیوونه شدن.بلندی.خوشگلی.
وَل - شانس آوردیم که تو یه منطقه هموار زندگی میکنیم.
وَل که بین فرانک و بچههاش نمیتونه تصمیم بگیره و در آخر تصمیم عجیبی میگیره!
در کل دوستش داشتم و به نظرم چرچیل قلم جذابی داره.
دلیل اینکه بهش ۴ از پنج دادم این بود که شاید با توجه به صحنههای زیادش غالب اجرایی شاید کمی سخت و دور از ذهنی داشته باشه.
و شاید قسمت هایی که به نظرم میتونست مختصر تر باشه.
به عنوان کسی که اول “سالار زنان” رو از چرچیل خوندم قطعا با توقع خیلی زیاد و بالایی شروع کردم به خوندن باتلاق فن که خب خداروشکر ناامیدم نکرد و از خوندش لذت بردم!

يه نمايشنامه كوتاه كه زندگى زنان كارگر رو نشون مى ده. از ٩٠ ساله دارن تا نوجوون و بچه. به نظرم اگه بيشتر احساسات و لحن شخصيت ها رو توضيح مى داد تو درك بهتر كمك مى كرد. مسلما تماشاى اين نمايشنامه از خوندنش لذت بخش تره.

Its 2020 and the themes of Fen are only becoming more relevant. Churchill is truly the master and this play is amongst her best. The characters pop and the dialogue crackles despite the deadly serious subject matter and the economy of language is downright impressive. The short, terse scenes between Val and Frank suggest infitine interpretations.

Review based on the 2023 Court Theatre Production in Chi. Truly a wonderful, complex, and rich text. Have no idea how one could pull it off without an increeeeedible ensemble like the one Court had.
If I had simply read the play I might have reviewed it lower but that would be more from a lack of vision on my part rather than an actual fair review of the text.

"I see it all as rotten."
The introduction mentioned the originals set being a field in a room and I couldn't unsee it as I read, such a fantastic idea. Each layer works together seamlessly. I love it when a character tries to get out.

Grim and modern, but as it was about rural hardships in East Anglia where my ancestors are from, I appreciated it.

This play is GRIM. Modern day feudalism at its worst. She wrote this play and workshopped it in The Fenlands.

In this play. Juicy. Need to figure it out. Lots of politics and my gracious, what a specific accent to learn. The range of characters is incredible. I'm pretty sure I get child abused in one scene. Woo!
