Caryl Churchill (born 3 September 1938) is an English dramatist known for her use of non-naturalistic techniques and feminist themes, dramatisation of the abuses of power, and exploration of sexual politics.[1] She is acknowledged as a major playwright in the English language and one of world theatre's most influential writers.

Her early work developed Bertolt Brecht's modernist dramatic and theatrical techniques of 'Epic theatre' to explore issues of gender and sexuality. From A Mouthful of Birds (1986) onwards, she began to experiment with forms of dance-theatre, incorporating techniques developed from the performance tradition initiated by Antonin Artaud with his 'Theatre of Cruelty'. This move away from a clear Fabel dramaturgy towards increasingly fragmented and surrealistic narratives characterises her work as postmodernist.

My seventh Churchill play. Not near her best work, but it wasn't close to the worst I've read either.
Traps - which first performed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in 1977, sees six people in a room, and asks questions regarding their relationships with each other. Intriguing to say the least

I'm really not sure what happened, but I loved the way it was written. It really is like a painting by Escher. I love the absurdity, the non-linear logic, the way the characters speak -- lifelike and at the same time unlifelike. I guess I'm confused in a good way, I think, or at least in a way I like. It's hard to tell what Churchill wanted to convey, but, I don't know, I'm glad this play exists, that it was written, that I read it.

Captivating dreamlike reality. Kind of precursor to Heart's Desire later in crazy multitude of what, to the characters, are very real realities. Shades of Cloud Nine's challenges to family structures, too.

Came here to see if I understood the play. Something something about unrealistic situations that we imagine in our heads that only exist in… our heads? Taboos and society rules define and trap us but there are parallel lives where dangerous relationships and no boundaries exist?
