I must admit to not reading the whole of this book. I’ve read a number of Dougie Brimson’s books, and they’re all excellent, but I found myself dipping in and out of this book. However, the first-hand accounts of the murders of Kevin Speight and Chris Loftus outside the Han Bar in Istanbul are extremely harrowing, especially the narrative of SR trying to give Chris Loftus mouth-to-mouth resuscitation whilst being repeatedly truncheoned by police and kicked by Turks, and the effect that had on him, physically and mentally. The fact that he “didn’t flinch once” no matter how much he was beaten by the Turkish police is indicative to me at least that he deserves some form of recognition.
As a factual essay about hooliganism on the continent, the book is outstanding. I probably did read most of it, I just flicked from chapter-to-chapter and back again as one thing after another took my interest.
For those who hold an interest in hooliganism throughout Europe, there’s no doubt this is the book for you, and for that reason I don’t hesitate to assign it a 5-Star
