In this second book in the Will Fain, U.S. Marshal, series, Will finds a hidden Spanish treasure on his property. He and Isum Wood, his chief deputy, search out murderers and rapists in wild Texas frontier towns like San Saba, Lampasas, Gatesville and Comanche. They kill two murdering gamblers in Buffalo Gap, go on to the wildest of western towns, Fort Griffin, where Will's great thoroughbred stallion, Traveler, wins a stakes race, and then Will and Isum fight off a gang which wants to steal the race money. It's a great story of adventure on the west Texas frontier, but also a heartfelt relationship with wife Virginia, and two children, Jacob and Annabelle, that warms Will's heart and keeps him grounded. When a crew of buffalo hunters strike Will's ranch, he and Isum use the Gatling gun to fight them off and restore peace to the ranch.
Audiobook Review Continuing the next tale of newly appointed US Marshal Will Fane's adventures on the wild West Texas Frontier of the post-Civil War era, I found that my initial delight was strengthened in book 2.
This is the second in a series and, while it starts fresh with a new series of events and conflicts so might be listened to standalone in a pinch, there is an understanding that the listener is already familiar with the characters, situation, and setting that carry over from the first book.
Will is out exploring parts of his new ranch land to get to know it and to see what resources are available as he considers how to best use the land. That's when he comes across a rocky outcrop with indian petroglyphs which he finds fascinating and then he is startled by a 17th century date and Spanish words scratched into the rock. This leads him to discover the cave, the Spanish artifacts, and... you guessed it, treasure.
The story continues on with Will spending time with his lovely wife and children, his ranch people, and then of course, he gets the inevitable telegraphs needing him in his Federal Marshal capacity. But, these latest are for some hard, toughened men that one man alone can't tackle. For the first time, former Buffalo Soldier, Isum Wood, his new Deputy Marshal partners him.
Between western town showdowns, stagecoach hold up, rustlers, cheating gamblers, army deserters, and more, Will uses his wits and his skills to bring law and order to the territory. Beside him is his strong, lovely pioneer woman wife and his loyal hands and they are needed.
As I indicated, this is a series of adventures for Will, his family, and his people with lots of action, but some twists, and not just a few tender moments with family life and his wife. There are interesting authentic details brought out, expansive descriptions, but also a whole lot of just daily life between the action moments.
A.T. Chandler continued in the role of narrator for which I was deeply glad. I'm pretty sure he will forever be the voice of this series of characters in my mind and I love the way he tells a western and specifically Will's story. He does great with women, children, older folk, and even people with slightly different drawls and twangs and foreign accents. He makes a scene whatever tone it needs to be and never overacts the highly intense parts.
All in all, I was left needing to continue on with the series especially with that dangling thread about the threat from a feuding family after him for arresting their kin. Want a good western that brings in home life, family, and romance with the action? Look no further.
My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
This second story is better than the first, which is definitely saying a lot, as the first was outstanding. I am forever more impressed with Mr. R. O. Lane's magnificent story telling and there is never a dull moment throughout the entire book! Will Fain can definitely compete with likes of Ranger Joe Pickett and U. S. Marshal Shorty Thompson.😂
Five stars and more is allI can say. WillIam does an outstanding job with his extraordinary visionary tactics, and I most definitely enjoy the family atmosphere throughout the entire story.
The author definitely impresses me with his apparent research and general knowledge of the subject matter and his characters, as well as his extraordinary storylines throughout the entire story. This type story is what each and every author strives to achieve, but not too many achieve.
I, most definitely recommend these great western adventures of Marshal Will Fain, as they are family oriented, as well as very heartwarming. Too, I was most definitely mesmerized by the fast action and the exciting descriptive episodes throughout the entire story. I am sure all other western folklore lovers will feel the same way!
In this second book, Will protects and nurtures his family and sets off with Isum to pursue outlaws and criminals in some of the worst untamed areas in West Texas. He engages villains with tenacity and determination. Will and Isum plan their strategies and overcome the outlaws. Will races his thoroughbred and wins a large amount of money in a wild frontier town. He and Isum were pursued all to way to their ranch where they used a Gatling gun to overcome their predators. Isum and his family have a home near Will and Alpha and his family live on the property as well. Alpha works with all the horses and prepares them for racing. Will hires a young man to tend his cattle and is very impressed with Del. Will and Virginia discover hidden Spanish gold on their property. They travel to San Antonio where they meet with a banker who promises to explore the value of the gold ingots. Viriginia enjoys the opportunity be in a city where they can buy clothing and gifts for the children. The story of Will and Virginia continues with depth and intensity. His relationships with Isum, Del and Alpha are a continuous thread in this very interesting story. RO Lane is an exceptional story teller who provides action filled, page turning experiences. I will continue to follow Will in his adventures. I would recommend this book without exception.
The author has so many flaws as a writer I am only going to explain one. The author writes all the events as a process of steps like a recipe. An example is depositing money in a bank by going to the bank, being recognized as the bank's most important customer, swapping greetings with the bank president, removing cash from his money belt, keeping some of the money for various reasons, making certain he gets a receipt and then bids the bank employees adios.
Then the writer repeats these exact same steps several times throughout the book. Whew...and don't forget the writer creates steps for having breakfast, lunch, dinner, going to bed, ad nauseam...and repeats all of these steps several times in the book.
This is about a man who will go to almost any lengths to see that his family is safe. He follows a lifestyle that few other men would follow: he treats women with total respect and will not let others misstreat a woman because of where she is in her life. In R O Lane's Will Fain is fair to all people no matter their faith, color, station in life or age. More beauty is found in the fact that I would feel free to give any one of the Will Fain books to any age of reader (male or female) and know that they are getting a book that will truly Bless them.
5 STARS for this Old West Era Drama that is based in Texas after the Civil War. Will Fain went to Texas to be a US Marshall because the President asked him to; also he married a beautiful widow with a young son & daughter, 6 & 5. He loves all of them very much, and got a ranch for all of them to start new while he also did his US Marshall job. A few oters live on the ranch with them that he had their own houses built for them, also a new hand came in for the cattle & has the warm bunk house to himself. Great action detailed, horse racing that's exciting, and rip roaring gun toting shooting that you will admire!
The biggest problem I have with the book is the use of words or phrases I've never heard of and for which I can find no reference. Examples are, "a bait of oats", "whistleberry", "picket cabin" (a cabin made like a picket fence?), and "sougan" (sougan sounds like it may be a native American word)."
"Sasparilla" should be sarsparilla, which is often mispronounced and misspelled.
I know I'm picky, but when I read an author that intrigues me i want that author to be as good as (s)he can be. Ok, Zane Gray spoiled me, and I'm jealous I can read so much but not write more than part of a short story.
Enjoyed very much, going to start#3 Had doubts at first with the title ,didn't sound interesting. But....remember the old saying , can't tell a book by its cover, well can't by its name either. This series is fantastic so far. Just don't turn him into a total family man. He is too good as a Marshall. Broke my heart when the horse got killed. Guess I'm too big an animal lover. Horses are great beast they endure everything put on them and take whatever is given to them and deserve great care and love they don't always get. I love the way Will cares for his animals makes me like him even more...can't wait to read #3 Tweety🐦🐦
Race baiting exasperates the racism problems. This author knows that but uses the device nonetheless trying to stir up emotion through twisting and misrepresenting history. By doing so it demeans the heroic effort this country made to end slavery. Slavery that was rampant in the world at that time. Slavery was common among indigenous tribes in America during that period. It is not okay to embellish and represent the negative of mankind as truth to further a righteous cause. A twisted truth is still a lie. Something politicians and news media struggle with.
This is a vivid description is the West and all of its dangers and beauty. The characters are portrayed in such detail that sometimes I felt like I was watching a movie & on the edge of my seat. The story line includes good old western, gunslinging, fast shooting action mixed with family and unique friendship. Will is a one of a kind character. He is a determined lawman with a no nonsense determination to get his outlaw no matter what and a smart businessman. Can't wait to read the next one!
Since discovering Mr. Lane's wonderful books, I have read about 6 in the last week. I looked at the series Will Fain and wondered if it would or could be as good as the others I have read. Well, let me tell you that this series is so good that I cannot put them down. The only complaint I have is that they are keeping me from sleeping. It's hard to sleep and read at the same time. I love Will Fair and his wife, Virginia. I know that I will be so sad when this series ends, but I also know that some other series by this author is just around the corner for me. Please keep writing.

He has picked Isom for his first Deputy and their partnership has been rewarding for both men and their families. The Fain family make a trip to visit family near San Antonio. Reroute a robbery occurs and bRain's wife is very adept a using hers pistol. This s an excellent read for the genre.....ER
Will Fain and his family and support characters are just so real!! I feel obligated to follow their story just to make sure that everything works out all right . I'm such a sucker for happy endings. These people are friends, in my mind's eye. I love it. BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO
I like that the 2 Will Fain books I’ve read have been well thought out and well edited. So many of the Westerns I’ve bought off Amazon are so full of grammatical and punctuation errors their not hardly readable! That is not the case with this series so far.
I like the story but it is not written like you become a part of it. The facts are there but the feelings are not. I really like to read series . I l I keep to keep reading about the same people so I will read the next book . If it were not a series I would not look for books by
Five stars aren't enough for this classic story teller. Once you start a Lane book you become a bystander, watching the action unfold. Before you know it you've turned the last page wanting the story to continue. I'm looking forward to reading all the Will Fain books and any others by this author. I've not been disappointed and neither will you.
Enjoyed the characters and story line in the book. Hope there were lawman with the character of Will and Isam who helped settle the West after the Civil War. Virginia was such a supportive positive person. Thank you for giving me hours of entertainment during the isolation of this pamdemic. Linda Clark
I choose this rating because it is so good ! I love the story I love ie because of how it is written ! You respect women and love your family. I also can't wait to start the next one , its like reading a novel. I'm going to read everything you have written thanks so much!
Each book can stand alone and be more than worth the read. Having four of them is a huge bonus. The story flows smoothly and stays consistent in detail and personalities.
Our hero had to do a lot of traveling in this book, but he always went when he was needed. It seems that there are always bad people. Thank goodness there are good people willing to stop them.
I so enjoy these books on Will Fain and his family. I can't wait to see what happens next. I look forward to many more books on the Fain family. Thank you R. O. Lane for a great read.
Marshall Fain is relentless. No matter the odds, he doesn't back down. Another fast moving, well written Western from this author. I am looking forward to reading all from ROL.
I liked the flow of the stories. Fain always has the right balance of reason and Justice with an element of compassion and kindness for innocent victims. Lastly he won’t stop until the job done !
For several years I have enjoyed books that tell a continuing story. It immerses you into the lives of the characters and I love that. These books fit the bill and are very reader-friendly. Thank you Mr Lane
Will is The Law in west Texas. He fights murderers and rapists. When his family is threatened, his wife is the first to act. R. O. Lane keeps the action moving and will keep you turning the pages.
I gave 5 stars because this book has everything to enjoy. It has lovers, liars, cheaters, murders etc. The heart is a good man with a good woman and surrounded by good friends.
R.O. Lane is a master story teller. His books tell a story that could have actually happened. So if you want some good reading open these and you won't put them down.
