Healing Jacob

Rate this book
Jacob Maddox

I’ve always wanted a fairytale love, and the night we meet is like something lifted out of a fever dream. With no place to go on a dark and stormy night, a luckless wanderer finds shelter with the man of his dreams. Except Lucas Deveraux is no Prince Charming.

He’s a bakery owner with an attitude problem. I’m a homeless guitar player with damage. We’re a bad ending waiting to happen. But his wicked mouth promises to cure everything that hurts me.

And I want to believe in him…

Lucas Deveraux

The night Jacob Maddox stumbles into my life, his vulnerability ignites a passion I can’t control. We bump heads, but our throbbing bodies connect. He’s always on the defense. I can’t bridle my tongue. He gets under my skin and into my system, and I can’t get enough.

I’m practical. This isn’t exactly a love story. Jacob comes with baggage, but so do I after being left at the altar by my high school sweetheart.

Oh, did I mention my ex chose right now to make a comeback?

Healing Jacbob is an extremely steamy, ultra high heat standalone Gay/MM romance with explicit scenes and a highly satisfying HEA ending!

Well, let's see...

Lightning was misspelled. Thrice.

"...one hell of a lot of aggression..."

"...and he pierced me with a look that had me shivering. And not from the cold."

Isn't that kind of a "duh" statement? He'd just stated the look was what had him shivering.

"...slid my finger in past his perineum."

Bro. Not sure that's how that works.

"Besides, I was nothing more than damaged goods, and I was sure he didn't need that complication. I just couldn't get away from the demons of my past, and it wasn't fair for anyone to feel compelled to help me."

After reading passages like that, I usually roll my eyes so hard I end up seeing my brain.

It's bad enough that you feel compelled as an author to make your characters that melodramatic. You make it worse when you shove it down your readers' throats with all the subtlety of a jackhammer.

The impression I got of the ex-boyfriend, the way Stewart described him, was that of a person of Maori descent. Stewart, however, wrote "Mauri". According to Wikipedia, the Mauri people ("not to be confused with Maori") were the Moors, the Berber population of Mauretania, located west of Namidia in an area coextensive with present-day Morocco.

I figured all this out in in a matter of a couple of minutes. The power of Google, Stewart. You should try and harness it every now and then.

"I knew you were a poser."

Poseur. The correct word is poseur.

Stewart is also one of those writers who puts a comma after every single instance of the word 'but'...even when it begins a sentence. This drives me insane.

During one sex scene, Lucas and Jacob were facing each other, then not, then facing each other again, without having moved properly to make this possible. I was flipping back and forth between pages, going, "How did he...but he was looking at his chest and then...but....".

In chapter 6, Jacob laments, "Danny did this to me every day since I had started working there. On the first day, he had eyed me from top to bottom." The lamenting goes on in that vein, and the reader gets the sense that a little time has passed since Jacob began working in Lucas's bakery. However, a few pages later, Lucas asked Jacob how his first day went.

For some reason, Lucas shakes hands with his one employee, Danny, every time he sees him. It's weird, considering they're friends who've known each other for years.

"He scooted down on the bed, until we were nose and nose."

"I began thundering into his ass with bone-jarring intensity."

"I couldn't help but admit that for a lawyer, he had a lot of sex appeal."

Stewart is terrible with detail. Jacob never showers. The night he shows up in Lucas's bakery, he's been homeless for lord knows how long. Prior to stepping foot in the place, he'd been sleeping under a bridge to stay out of the rain, but there is no mention of any kind of cleaning up before he and Lucas end up in bed together. Later on in the book, after Jacob has spent another month on the streets, Lucas brings him home, feeds him, and puts him to bed...again, without Jacob cleaning himself.

Gross.

In a melodramatic scene fitting an overwrought Lifetime movie, Jacob is assaulted by a police officer and has his hand broken. Yet as he's lying in bed with Lucas, draped over him, Lucas is somehow using his own hand to stroke Jacob's good hand, something that wouldn't be physically possible unless Jacob is lying on his broken one. Then in the very next sex scene, Jacob is movings his "hands" over Lucas's pecs, and Jacob is somehow able to run one hand up the outside of Lucas's thigh while jerking the two of them off with the other. Then he's somehow capable of putting leather handcuffs on Lucas. Then...

"Leaning my weight on one hand, I reached down between us and began jerking him in unison with my hips."

Okay, Jacob is apparently some kind of wizard capable of mending bones in a matter of hours.

To top it off, they forgo condoms without even a discussion.

Just....no, Nicole Stewart. Everything you did here was bad.

Definite M/F vibe and did not feel M/M. I love hurt-comfort romances but the characters did not impress me. Lucas cruelly bullied his way around Jacob. Even excusing his recent breakup, Lucas still acted like an asshat. For me, he wasn't emotionally trustworthy enough. Jacob was an abused doormat who didn't realize when Lucas crossed his boundaries. For living on the streets for so long he just wasn't savvy. So no, these two did not dance well with each other. DNF.

I simply did not feel it with this story, which puts me in the minority if other reviews are to go by. It read a lot like a M/F romance novel. I read a lot of gay romance – my genre of choice – and I guess I just expected better. I'd feel differently had Lucas not been a big ass and Jacob not a doormat. Throw in Lucas' ex - who is given entirely too much time in this book - and it just didn't work for me. If I don't like the main characters I usually don't like the story. My first impression of Lucas was not good and it didn't get better the more I read.

Not for me.
-Insta (they are having sex within an hour of meeting and Jacob is a virgin)
-Both characters Lucas and Jacob are generic and blah. You can't tell who is talking until they have sex.
-Plot is dramatic just for the sake of drama no real interesting conflicts.
-Tempers constantly flaring (very annoying to me)

This just wasn't for me. Could possibly be a better read for someone else.

Also don't mention the ex in a proposal. Don't ever do that, NOT COOL.

Pointless.

Not sure what the point of this story was supposed to be. Lucas was so unbelievably self-indulged, rude and uncaring. Jacob left me feeling irritated. I was very sorry for his childhood and what he endured, but I just wasn't able to feel anything for either person. Synopsis sounded cute. Story wasn't.

Enjoyable read. There are some real poignant moments, sweet and heartbreaking but I did feel the story lost itself a couple of times and the plot "tried too hard" with unnecessary drama.

The book finishes with an overly sentimental HFN ending that may have caused an eyeroll - however, the mentioning of Kae when on bended knee... " WTF are you on?"

Okm

This was an ok read. Other people will probably love it but for me it was too full of cliches and convenient coincidence, unrealistic situations and some just ridiculous. And yes, I know it's fiction but there were a couple of occasions where writing in a shower scene would have been hugely appropriate.

2 1/2 - 3 stars

I am honestly conflicted about how to rate this book. There were many things that I liked about it, however so many others didn't seem to fit the story, numerous errors (which is surprising for this author's books), or it just didn't work for me. I usually love the stories by this author, which I was hoping would be the case for this book, but unfortunately I didn't. Don't get me wrong, it was a good story, had a good plot and characters, and I enjoyed the hilarious banter between the friends.

Although there were things that I enjoyed about this book, there were many others that kept me from loving it. One of the main issues was the numerous errors throughout the book. It was more than just a few misspelled words, which is annoying enough, but it went well beyond that. I'll try to explain, but I refuse to give away spoilers, so it may be difficult. In several cases, it would state one thing, but it the next couple of sentences, something else would be said that contradicted the first. Then there were a few statements that were physically impossible, one in general, but the others due to the limitations of the character at the time. There were other things that I struggled with, but I won't be able to give examples without spoilers. I have yet to see any of these issues in any of her other books.

I won't recommend or not recommend this book. I'm just giving my opinion. If you're interested in this, I would suggest that you request a sample to see if it's something that you can enjoy.

Title: Healing Jacob
Author:Nicole Stewart
Genre: M/M

Nicole Stewart has done it again with this great read.
Healing Jacob was a good 4 star read.
Erotic Romance, M/M

Jacob is a homeless musician who walks into Lucas’s bakery on a stormy night looking for shelter.
He ends up getting more than he expected.

Jacob came out to his parents and they were cruel by locking him in a closet to try and change him. He ended up running away and living on the streets.
Lucas is recovering from a break-up with his fiance. He just want’s to be loved. Could Jacob be the one?

Finding each other was the best thing that could have happened. Will they be able to work through their issues? What will happen when Lucas’s ex shows back up?

I really enjoyed reading Jacob and Lucas’s story. I don’t normally read M/M books, however Nicole does a great job with her writing and really pulls you in. You can’t help but hope these two get their HEA/ 1-click and get started today.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy as a part of the Author's ARC team.

Well since I love love stories I thought I would give this one a try, the blurb sounded fascinating. So what is a gal to do but tackle a subject that I am not familiar with. Don't get me wrong, love is love and to be honest Eros does not care where he shoots his arrow.

Jacob Maddox and Lucas Deveraux two men and souls who have been wounded deeply, Jacob by this Father, to the point he now trusted no one and expected nothing good from anyone, yet dreamed of finding love. Lucas had been deserted by his boyfriend, someone he had known all his live, 6 months before they were due to tie the knot.
Cliche I know, but on a dark stormy night in Seattle Jacob and Lucas meet, the attraction is instant, but life is not easy, due to mistrust and pain, will both find the love they seek, will Lucas find happiness with Jacob and will Jacob be able to love Lucas back.
Won't say much more, its a cool book, a lovely story, that might even make you cry a bit.

Am absolute masterpiece of a fairytale with not one, but two Prince Charmings!

I'd give double the 5-star max if possible, for this was a gripping tale that electrified and sizzled its way through and around some nasty abuse, prejudice and outright feelings of mediocrity. Lucas and Jacob are beautiful TOGETHER, and while Lucas comes to that conclusion way before Jacob does, his (Jacob's) heartbreaking journey to his healing is still wonderful to read (with a box of tissues)! Jacob's surprisingly mature and heartwarming request for Kae's blessing blasted any future development of insecurity, mistrust and bad vibes between the three of them, and cemented not just Lucas and Jacob's relationship but their friendship with Kae. Healing Jacob is a superior, sizzling-hot love story that hits all the right buttons.

Uh oh the blurb sounded so promising. This was a new to me author and the writing stile is ok for me but the story is a bit boring. The beginning was ok but that the virgin Jacob falls into bed with someone he just met is a bit unrealistic. And the story progresses in the same way. The ex Kae turns up again and is shocked to see that his former fiancé has move on. He thought that wouldn´t happen and he could come back as he liked it. Kae has cancer and wanted to be taken care of. Jacob who thinks the worst of all people runs from the confrontation. That part was ok for me. I had counted on a bit more drama through the ex tho.
What galled me the most was the totally unnessessary sobstory with Jacobs mother. This part did nothing for the storyline and was IMO obly there to give the book a bigger HEA.

I have been reading more and more M/M novels and I truly love them. There is something so hot and beautiful with these types of stories. Lucas and Jacob blew me away. I absolutely loved them. Jacob was so damaged and has had such a rough childhood. He truly was so broken that it would take a special person to heal him. I loved how Lucas not only took the time to heal Jacob, but helped him to slay his demons. He gave him the strength to face the things that left him feeling unsure and worthless. I loved how Lucas's ex comes into play in this story as well and again. The story was great and the characters made me swoon. Jacob and Lucas were both great guys and had a great story. I'd love to see more of these guys as their relationship deepens.

While Nicole is known for her MMF books, this is her first MM and I loved every word of it.

From when we are first introduced to Jacob, he is homeless trying to stay dry on a cold wet night. After a cop tells him he can't sleep or stay under the over pass he wanders into a bakery in the wee hours of the morning where Lucas is up baking b/c he can't sleep months after he is basically left at the alter. What happens from there is nothing but page turning heat, lust, love, and heart racing twist/arch then ends in an amazing HEA.

I hope Nicole continues on the path of MM romance.

Wow! Just wow! Nicole needs to write more m/m books. I loved this one. It had heart. It had strength and belonging. I just loved Lucas and Jacob . Each had their own story and both were afraid of commitment. Lucas didn't know how to communicate his feelings so he always assumed the worst in people. Jacob was getting over a broken heart. The friends and the drama in the book will keep you captivated till the end. Then at the end of the book you will want it to continue. I am just hoping for a book 2 with them.

A book full of telling with very little showing. Painful to slog through in many ways and the instalove was off the charts. Every problem was sorted out seemingly with a magic wand and a few words.
Though there was a LOT of sex in the book, it was mostly so paint by numbers that it was hardly tittilating. The premise was good so I gave an extra star though the author certainly did not deliver on that promise. 2 grudgingly given stars.

Wow

All Jacob wanted to do was get out of the rain. He didn't know when he walked in Lucas's bakery he would end up meeting his Prince Charming. Both men had their own demons to deal with. But In Lucas healing Jacob he healed himself. And Jacob found himself and the family he wanted.

I loved it. I fell in love with Jacob and Lucas. It's written in such a way that you feel as if you are a part of their self made family. Watching as they both heal from their painful and traumatic pasts. A must read!! A voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Well I got hooked after reading the blurb but it wasn't much interesting when it came to the book.
It starts with a virgin homeless boy who seeks shelter at Lucas's bakery who was dumped by his boyfriend six months before the wedding..
In short the whole book goes like this...

Sweet, if slightly preposterous story line (but that's not exactly unique), lots of sex scenes. Fun read if you don't think about the plot or indeed the sex too much (bakers who have lie ins? bakers who have ripped bodies but never go to the gym? Strangers who get that intimate that quickly with, err, so little prep? The whole dom thing that keeps getting hinted at and then ignored? Ahh, fuck it, the sex scenes were plentiful enough and written well enough that I didn't really care, I like me a bit of dirty talking).

The story of Jacob and Lucas highlights some of the issues that are still out there and should NOT still be out there. What Jacob has had to go through in order to live his own truth is a path that any person should never have to deal with and Nicole brings it front and center. Lucas has his own demons to deal with. Will he and Jacob be able to confront their demons and find the path to love that we see so early on that neither of them can see? I loved this book as it touched with the hardships of being gay but it also touched on how a person can also have such complete acceptance

I’ve agonized over writing this review for nearly two weeks! – and only because I don’t know how to best convey how much I loved this book. Words just don’t seem to cut it with me on this one, for some reason – the first time I can remember this ever happening….

I loved this book and it was extremely well written. The flawed and vulnerable characters and the raw, emotionally charged storyline reeled me in and kept me hooked from start to finish. It was a masterful combination of deep, no-holds-barred, pure, genuine, and heart-ripping (and gripping) emotion and agonizingly – nearly visceral – storytelling, about two very different men who complete one another, demons, heartaches, bumpy journeys, and all. Author Nicole Stewart masterfully dove down straight to the bottom of the two main characters’ souls in this one with Jacob Maddox and Lucas Deveraux. If what these two shared isn’t the definition of true love, than I don’t know what is.

And the heat quotient? Stewart can write scorching, intimately tender love scenes that extend far beyond the physical. These are by far some of the best written – and convincing! – ones I’ve ever read. Not only is the sex hot and heavy, but so are the emotions – off the charts.

So, I still feel at a loss for words and that I’m not giving sufficient credit… because I don’t know how to. And I’m definitely not one to fawn and compliment generously, either, but I’ll share the notes I jotted down for lack of a better plan….

Intense. Simultaneously heart-wrenching, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. Deeping moving. Passionate. Emotionally intimate. Depth and layers to the characters.

One thing I know: Healing Jacob gets filed among my “Wow!” reads.
