Some things Swiss age better than others

I must confess I was looking forward to reading the #nobelprizelibrary collection featuring #carlspitteler , who won the #nobelprizeforliterature in #1918 because, as far as I can remember, this would be the first works I had read from an author from #switzerland which, despite an extremely literate people, has a diminished literary tradition in comparison to most of its European neighbors. In fact, in it's 123 year history the #nobelcommittee has only given the prize for literature to Switzerland twice.

Of course, once I began reading the works in the Nobel collection, I began to understand that part of the problem is the pictorial beauty of the nation can't make up for the general tedium of its authors. I am perhaps being unfair because I am reading an #englishtranslation of #germanpoetry where some of the glory may be lost in translation. But, as I read more on Spitteler himself, my reservations seem to be common. He had been placed in nomination numerous times going back to the first awards and, by 1918, his work was mostly long out of print and he generally obscure. But, in the final year of #worldwari , #swissneutrality was a much desired quality in an extremely polarized nation so, awarding Spitteler the #nobel was a safe and unoffending option.

I certain aspects his poetry is quite beautiful as his Swiss environs inspired the backdrop of many of his poems. But, being self published in his late 30's with an epic poem that took him 14 years to write didn't lend his work to popular acclaim. This wasn't an easy read but certain passages were quite beautiful. Unfortunately, not memorable.
