Operation Lightning Strike

Rate this book
This book and the prequel, Operation Thunder Child, are the only two science fiction novels ever to have gone through the British Government’s security vetting procedure, on the basis that Nick Pope was involved not just in official government research and investigation into the UFO phenomenon, but in highly classified work on the Gulf War and other sensitive operations. Operation Lightning Strike is a fast-paced action thriller written in the style of Tom Clancy, but dealing with themes more commonly found in The X-Files. If you want to know what would really happen if we faced an alien invasion, this book tells the story. Film/TV rights are available.

This book is a sequel of Operation Thunder Child, which covered the first contact with aliens in a combat situation. Like the first book, Nick Pope provides an interesting viewpoint from those involved in the defence of the UK and in particular the process of which the air force establishment operates. However in this sequel the main alien mother-ship approaches and the story expands into the political sphere and a some involvement of the aliens themselves. It is in this latter part where the author shows a weakness in imagination. There is far too little alieness of the impending invaders and it is almost as if it is human on human. While this may have been the intention of the author, it is disappointing that more imaginative approaches were not used in this area. Also the main characters were not allowed to grow to an extent that the reader could connect. So while he book is interesting in its approach and ending, I felt that there was something missing.

Is that it? Talk about cliffhanger...

Again, an excellent sequel to operation thunderchild, named for the valiant, but doomed, ironclad features in the War of the Worlds. Lots of threads came together, and twists and turns continued to the end.

Read both books! They're not exactly difficult to follow, they're very exciting, and well worth the investment of time and money.
