Untouchable follows Bakha, a young man from a low caste who works as a cleaner during British rule in India. The story shows how he is insulted and mistreated every day, even though he is just as human as everyone around him. The book focuses on one very difficult day in his life, and it clearly explains the pain and unfairness caused by the caste system.
I liked the message and the importance of the topic. The ending, with Gandhi’s speech against untouchability, adds a hopeful touch.
However, as a reading experience, it felt average for me. The story had slow moments, and nothing really stood out or surprised me. I respect the subject, but I didn’t feel very connected to the characters or the writing.
