This is fantastic! The concept here is to teach children, even very young children, the origins of the language they speak and read. By focusing on the roots of English; Greek and Latin, students are able to "decode" meaning when they come across an unfamiliar word. Their spelling and pronunciation are likely to improve as well. It is akin to the difference between knowing how to perform a mathematical operation and knowing the concept behind the arithmetic. The book suggests that students keep a file box of index cards to keep track of the Greek and Latin words they are learning. My students used metal rings which they hung on their chairs. They loved possessing their own collection of cards and took great pride in neatly entering the relevant information. Bonus: I, the teacher, learned almost as much as my students did!
I really enjoyed learning the Greek and Latin root words. We liked to have fun with them and create new words. We always got a laugh because at the bottem of the page it tells the teacher some tips for teaching to a class and so it says, "the CHILDREN would enjoy this...." or "the CHILDREN would find that interesting." So our little joke would be like, "ok, CHILDREN, listen up!" so ya, I don't know why we found that so amusing...but we did. :) Anyway, the book was good.
We used this in a small homeschool co-op, and a little bit in our own home. Simply word roots, whether Greek or Latin, and words derived from them. Kind of dry, but can be used however you want. Good reference.
Lots of fun to learn the origin of many of our and other Latin based languages. Started my children with this at 2nd grade age and all have improved their vocabulary, the understanding of words, and spelling. It even helped my daughter excel in Latin class.
