Well, I rather enjoyed the title story, Stallion (3-stars), but the rest of this volume was not even that good. The narratives are plot or situation driven, meaning that the focus is putting a character into a specific situation and working the entire narrative so that this is the result. These types of stories have little impact or interest to anyone outside of the particular demographic they are designed for. In an ongoing series this can work, because the character arc and motivation gets spread out over multiple stories, episodes or installments. It is pretty much ineffective in one-shot stories like these. This particular collection also suffers from the problem of pulling from too wide a number of genres: American wild west, vampires, demonic possession and epic fantasy. A little more focus and similarity on the themes might have helped, but also spending more time on the characters and their motivations and less time on orchestrating the narrative to arrive at a specific scene/situation would have helped as well.
Don't waste your time. From the back cover, I was expecting the entire book to be a western, but, that's about half of the book - the other half is ads for other books and like three shorts that don't really make sense and the artwork is just horrid in them. There's a modern vampire short, a modern demon short, and a fantasy short that the title is "Chapter Three", so, the last stories felt slapped together. Also, the authors seemed very proud that they visited a wild west town "that helped portray it (the story) as realistically as possible without copying the classics". First off, the main story read as if the writers had watched enough western to use the common themes and threw them together. There wasn't anything new in the story, it felt rehashed. Second, everything after the main story is just filler and a waste. Don't waste your money or time on this, there are better stories and artwork out there.
These four short BL stories are so generic, and the first one is full of so many bad stereotypes. It even stated that the authors went to a old western set for story ideas.
Josie (the blond) is about to take his revenge on Bill Tempest when he’s attacked by Stallion (the one with the cute butt) because HE wants to kill Bill. This ends up getting them both captured but they manage to escape. Seems Bill killed a young girl in cold blood scarring Josie in the process and he also raped Stallion as a young boy so both are out for revenge. Stallion feels compelled to save Josie (who Bill captures and rapes) but ends up in jail for daring to enter the town. Josie sets him free and they go after Bill who shoots Josie and Stallion kills him. Josie nearly dies but Stallion commits his soul and saves him. Well, it’s no Saihoshi which was how I discovered this artist whom I adore. I can live with insta-love in a fantasy setting but in a quasi-realistic setting not so much. It wasn’t as good as I’d expected.
There is another two stories. One is an older story about a son looking to avenge the death of his vampire-hunter father. When he finds the vampire he learns the story behind it and ends up vampirizing (is that a word?) himself so that he can pursue the vampire further. The third is kind of a horror story about a young boy whose stuffed bear from his childhood wants him for himself. An older boy who has been following his story makes a deal with the demon, that if he can have the boy just once he’ll go away. The boy agrees (since he’s already been smexin‘ with the other guy) and then when it’s over you see the demon’s eyes glinting in the older boy’s eyes. Ooooohhh. Meh. I didn’t like the artwork and as I said, if they were younger than I expect then ick. This is a yaoi that you read like a Western book. Maybe because it’s written by people in Spain? Not sure. Also found out that Kôsen is actually two women.
As far as I know, no one else has written a yaoi manga based on cowboy westerns. This one is a good start to a genre that I hope will grow, and maybe the writers will produce a sequel?
Stallion is a romance with a difference, two good guys get their revenge on the bad guy and it isn't a minute too soon as Bill has done more damage to the two of them, Stallion, an American Indian who is buck naked except for a loin cloth only just covering his privates, and Josey, who wanted to take him back to the sheriff for all the crimes he has committed over the years.
There was a lot of potential that this book didn't live up to. The artwork was lovely and the plot idea was a good one, but when you actually read the book, the telling of the story was weak. Perhaps I was subconsciously expecting something like Ayano Yamane's Finder series transported back to the 19th century American west.
If you can borrow it from someone or get it real cheap it's worth a look through, but it's not worth paying full price for.
I'm a KOSEN fan, but this manga was disappointing. The cover is, heh, extremely promising, but even for a pwp (porn-without-plot) the story was a bit too disjointed and flat to bear. Slight redeeming factor? The closeups of Stallion's thong-rocking rear. Nice.
Superficial and playful, Kosen toys with the western genre with the most beautiful boys yaoi can produce. The authors' style is unique and beautiful, and the doe-eyed uke is heart-melting. Another Kosen winner, even if Saihoshi is my all-time favorite.
My favorite book of all times. The whole story, the concept, the really well done drawings with amazing details. It was the first yaoi manga I ever read, so I have a very special memory of it. I have re-read it a lot of times, and I know I would do it again *g*
A really outstanding Yaoi, very different from the formulaic Japanese books. If you like Yaoi, but are tired of the same old story, same old style, then give this Italian interpretation of the Old West a try: Stallion
The plot-line wasn't very good. It was somewhat disappointing. There were some cute scenes as well as some that were almost hot, but overall, it wasn't that great.
