Why I Choose This Book:

It sounded like a smart book to read. In reality I already love my work, but the back cover blurb was interesting.

What I Thought About This Book:

The first several chapters took a while for me to get through - they didn't exactly apply to where I am in life right now. It felt like information overload and rather boring, like a chunky article that I didn't exactly know what the takeaway would be for me personally. (To clarify: I'm pretty sure this is because I'm not at a place where this information pertains to me, not because of the book itself.)

About a fourth of the way through the book though, it became a lot more relatable and I began finding gems as I read. There were a lot of great one-liners, quotes, ideas, and statistics. The writing felt a lot more engaging, and I found myself curious about what was going to be shared next.

It's clear the author really researched the topic of how to build a successful career in todays economy. Some of the information regarding how much the career world is changing was a bit over my head, but mostly I found it intriguing. Obviously I knew that the field of technology is rapidly changing, but I hadn't realized just how extremely fast that change is happening, so this book was rather eye-opening.

The author presents a balanced and Biblically congruent look at work and careers and giving your best. I appreciated his insights, suggestions, and the resources he suggested. (Not that I've looked into all the resources yet, because there were a lot of them.)

One of the "ah-ha moments" for me was when he was talking about someone who regularly asks his audiences what they would do differently if they could go back to when they were 18 and "start again" with their careers, lives, etc.... The author wrote what he'd do, and I realized that as a twenty-four-year-old, I have an advantage over literally everyone older than me who hasn't stopped to ask themselves questions like that. That advantage, is of course, that I can ask myself that now and make changes at this age, instead of waiting until I'm older to realize it if I'm not on the path that I want to be in life.

Conclusion:

This book had a lot of good information, and even though I regretted requesting it for review at the beginning (because I didn't feel like it was beneficial to me and it didn't hold my interest), I'm glad I read it.

I would recommend it to anyone thinking of switching to a new career, or who is dissatisfied with their current job.

Rating:

I'm giving "Love Your Work" 3 out of 5 stars, and 5 out of 10.

Although it had a few nuggets here and there, by a few chapters in I felt Iike I was getting a free fishing rod for attending a several-hours-long sales pitch, with a lot of name dropping and website suggesting. Not my thing. It got so bad that I even chose not to finish listening for the nuggets as I couldn't swallow the advertising. It was too much work to sift vitamin-rich truth from marketing. If there's is nuggets only version with an appendix of resources in the back, I may give it another shot.

For fans of vocational self help, this is worth putting on the list because there are concrete steps, action plan, and more resources accessed for free on his site. There are several spots where he references God and prayer and the book suddenly feels religious. Besides that, I thought this was helpful.

Today, staying with the same employer for most of your career is an exception. Most workers will face a job change several times in their lives. Some changes are by choice, others are forced on the employees. How do you handle these changes? What if the problem is that you feel unfulfilled in your current job? Robert Dickie III shares how you can transition to another job, or make your current job better in Love Your Work.

No matter your work history, there will come a time that some type of change will have to be made. Love Your Work divides these changes into four quadrants: reinvent, revector, repurpose, renew. Each one is well explained and Robert Dickie III does a good job of showing how to tell where you are. Finding which one applies helps you make plans for what to do next.

The book seems to be geared towards a corporate environment, and jobs where you have plenty of opportunities for advancement. However, the advice applies to all workers, even freelancers and small business employees.

The book is clear that you need to take stock of yourself, including your God-given talents, so that you do the work your are designed to do. Tips on doing this, and places to hone your skills for little or no cost are included.

Love Your Work is easy to read, and since I am currently facing exactly what the book is about, I found it extremely informative. I believe it would benefit any worker, whether you are facing a change or not.

I received a free copy of this book from Moody Publishers in exchange for this honest review.

I really, really, really wanted to love this book.

However, I didn't see any notifications that this title would have Christian themes - which is fine and I can appreciate this at certain moments, but it isn't what I wanted in a business book. I hate to rate the book lower for this, but I was unable to finish. And while the author specifically states he doesn't want this book to have religious themes, and that religion is something that specifically helped him, I felt that it was continually sneaking in.

In all fairness, I had to DNF, and I'm not sure if the scripture and references to being a strong Christian continue through the entire book. Had there been a notification that scripture and religious theology related to business are discussed (even mildly), I wouldn't have purchased this. While I am spiritual, I prefer to keep certain aspects separated and at this time, I'm looking for books without these aspects.

I did, however, pass this book on to my mom as a suggestion for her Kindle. I'm sure she will love it and be able to connect to it when I couldn't.

I received a digital copy of "Love Your Work" from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The book has many suggestions by the author to stay on top of the ever changing technology industry, especially for those looking to transition into a new career path. It is not meant for someone looking for a quick "do these 4 things" will be disappointed, as it is more of a read/think/put into action book. Each chapter has an action point or two to do, as well as a shared story & biblical reference. The book is not meant to be read in one sitting, but rather to be used as each step is complete, in my opinion.

We were sent a review copy of this book without cost or obligation.  This will in no way affect our opinion or our review of Love Your Work by Robert Dickie III.

Love Your Work could probably best be described as Who Moved My Cheese on steroids.

Love Your Work takes a Christian view of the world today and the rapidly changing economy and offers advice about how to prepare for the inevitable changes to come.

Gone are the days when one could go to work for one company and expect to work for that company 30+ years, then retire with a pension and relax by loafing around at the general store.

Love Your Work addresses how the reader can keep a finger on the pulse of technology and look out for possible trends that will change the business in which they are employed.

Even though the two terms, “Opportunities” and “Threats” are not mentioned per se in the book, the reader is taught to look out for them.

The book speaks of pivot points.  That is times when one’s career takes a turn.  Maybe the turn is for the better; maybe it is for the worst.  The reader learns possible ways to be ready for the next pivot point in their life and how to best take advantage of it.

The reader is given several suggestions about how to get prepared for the next job in their career path.

Love Your Work is very readable, with real life examples of individuals who took advantage of the pivot points in their lives and had great success by doing so.

On our scale of 0 stars to 5 stars we rate this book a 5.  We suggest that anyone who is contemplating a career move read this book first.
