This book starts out with a warning, and very rightly so. Some of these stories cover topics that could be considered triggers. Others will just straight up rip your heart out. I can't help but note that if they are that hard to read, just imagine how hard it was to write them. To put yourself out there on a subject that is taboo as well as misunderstood.. Every single person who contributed, no matter if it was in a small or large way gets a standing ovation from me for this amazing book! Some of these stories really hit home for me, I've lost a few friends to suicide. I've watched my father battle with Schizoaffective disorder and ultimately take his own life as well as dealing with my own chronic depression and anxiety. This was a hard read and ok, I took breaks for cute cat videos. I am glad I bought and read it though. I'm a big believer in shining a huge light on this particular topic. The more we talk about it and educate others, the less misinformation is out there floating around and potentially causing harm. With one in four adults suffering from some form of mental illness we can no longer afford for the subject to be taboo. I know it's early in the year yet but I'm calling this one a "Must Read of 2017" not only is the cause a great one but the hope and inspiration offered in the stories..it's just an a-freaking-mazing book! :)
Doctor-Patient Confidentiality by Kandice Michelle Young
Ok . . . . So I am not sure where to start with this one as it was tough in so many ways. I struggled with rating this one. I wanted to give it 5 stars because Kandice nailed this story! She drags you in from page one and holds you there right to the very end. Then I was like, nope a 3.5 star because it doesn’t feel complete, and it’s not, there will be more from Sage at a later date. So I am going with my original 5 Stars because this seriously deserves it. In my opinion, this is by far Kandice’s best work to date, I can not wait until she releases Sage’s full story.
This was my first book solely about mental health, and let me tell you, it was this really was #NotMasoFriendly. I cried, I got super angry and then I cried some more. But , I am so glad I stuck it out and read it.
Sage breaks my heart. She married a man she thought loved her as much as she did him, years later she is stuck in a marriage that is not only loveless but also downright mentally abusive. Her “perfect” husband, aka the douchebag, treats her like crap on a daily basis with his belittling and ultimately, she allows it. Until one day she finds herself with rusty scissors against her wrist, trying to escape her reality.
The next 21 days are about Sage trying to find herself while she is in a mental health clinic after her failed suicide attempt. At first, she shuts down, blaming everything on herself for being a “failure.” Then she meets Max. Dr. Maxim Mikhailov, her private psychiatrist who instantly feels like a safe-haven for Sage and that is where the Doctor/Patient lines blur.
I am SO glad Kandice didn’t turn this into a whole thing about Sage fell for the doctor, had sex and was cured because of him. Max nurtures her, shows her how she Should be treated, but in the end, Sage must find her own self-worth and self-love before looking outwards.
There is not much more I can really say about this one without giving everything away. It’s a heartbreaking 21 days of self-discovery and inner strengths. All while learning you do not need a man (or woman) to complete you, You can do that all on your own.
Sage has a huge road ahead of her, and I honestly can not wait to read about it.
This anthology comes with a well placed warning. It contains some true to life accounts and may be a trigger for those who have wxperienced mental health illnesses, such as the ones focused on.
With that being said, I did enjoy reading this anthology. As a sufferer of depression and anxiety, and who knows what I haven't been diagnosed with, these stories touched my soul. It made me feel like I'm not alone. Knowing that is completely different than feeling that. Feeling that I'm not alone has really helped me keep going with my battle with these Silent Killers.
And if you do read this anthology, please utilize the contact information at the end if you feel the need. There really is help out there, you just have to want to get it.
