Classroom 13 #2

The Disastrous Magical Wishes of Classroom 13

Rate this book

For fans of Captain Underpants or Sideways Stories from Wayside School, this new chapter book series is perfect for reluctant readers.

When unlucky teacher Ms. Linda LaCrosse finds a magic lamp, she releases a genie--um, I mean, a Djinn--who agrees to grant each of her students ONE WISH!

You might think this was fantastic, but it was not. It was a frightful idea! With magic wishes come hungry dinosaurs, stinky pizza, photographing paparazzi, and other huge mistakes. As the students of Classroom 13 are about to learn, you should be careful what you wish for.
What would YOU do with one magic wish? The final chapter of each book encourages young readers to write their OWN chapter and send it in to the author, Honest Lee!

The Disastrous Magical Wishes of Classroom 13 is the second title in a new chapter book series of hilarious stories about a very unlucky classroom. Each story is full of humor, action, and fun that will prompt hours of conversation among friends, families, and classrooms.

Two hilarious books in the Classroom 13 series, in one the kids get wishes and in the other the kids are superheroes (or villains whichever they want).

I read these two in Dutch but want to write my review in English. I am also combining the reviews because the books follow the same pattern. It begins with the teacher, we see something happen in the classroom and then we read per child what happens to them, interspersed is the narrator who sometimes pops up, at least I would call it the narrator.

I don't know why my library has books 2 and 4 and not the rest, but hey, that is the libraries here for you. They don't know how to add books correctly it seems.

In these two books we see the kids in Classroom 13 experience some amazing things that had me wishing I could be in that classroom myself. It seems that there is always something happening. In these two books the kids get a chance for a wish and they get zapped by radioactive lightning and get superpowers. I had so much fun reading these books and getting to meet the kids. Since I read the books in Dutch I will use the Dutch names as I have no clue what the names are in English, at least not until I get the 3 books I ordered on Amazon (yes, I couldn't resist or wait for the library to get them in Dutch). I loved Hugo and how he spoke French and then instead of awesome superpowers... he went from French to Spanish. *snorts* There is Lucita who wants to fly.. but just floats. And really don't give the kid who is often sick fire powers.. Dang. You sneeze you lose. I loved reading about the other superpowers as well. And then there were the wishes. Oh boy, that genie is just as evil as most of the genies are. I know already that if I meet a genie, I will just say no thank you and step away. You have to be so careful with your wishes. Look at the kid who wished to be a merman (Liam) or the girl who wanted infinite wishes (Amber) and see how those turned out. I think the only one happy is the idiot of the class (Milan).

With each book there are also one or more kids who are coincidentally not in the class when things happen. I had a laugh, though I also thought it was sad for them. At least in the book with the genie one of the kids still got their wish.
And with each book we also get to see the thoughts of the classroom. Yes, really. And it is not amused. :P

I liked that you can read the books out of order, well, ish. There are still some spoilers for the other books, and during the classroom chapters we see that he has already committed to doing revenge 2 and 4 times.

I also really liked how each of these books stories ended. It give me quite a few giggles.

I just have to mention that I found one of the kids a tad meh. I get that we are heading towards terribleness with the earth, but to say ALL adults are bad? All adults to have to go? Sorry, but what? I am sure many adults are trying their best to make something of the world. Maybe you should just focus on the worldleaders? The politicians? People with influence who don't give a rats ass?

The illustrations are just wonderful and I love how well they fit with this silly and funny series.

Leeland my 11 year old is reading aloud these books! They are so funny and each chapter is a bit of a short story. It’s one series I look forward to reading with him. We will continue on and there are so many!

Ms. Linda of Classroom 13 stumbles upon a lamp on her way to work one day. In an attempt to clean it, she rubs it enough that a mysterious blue figure rises up out of it. It's not a genie - its a djinn! He announces that he's only able to grant one wish per student, including Ms. Linda. Never before has the saying, "Be careful what you wish for," held so true.

Discussion Questions:
1. The mysterious floating man calls himself a djinn, not a genie. What is a djinn and why do you think he calls himself by this name?

2. Why did the djinn warn the students to be careful what they wish for? And why do you think he gave them a smirk as he said it?

3. What would you wish for if you only had one wish? Try to think of something that the students of Classroom 13 didn't wish for, and explain your answer.

4. If you could be any of the students after they made their wish, who would you be and why?

5. What do you think the classroom wanted to wish for at the end? Explain your answer.

Childrens Early chapter book. After being disappointed and a little angry from reading the first book, I had to see if the series redeemed itself. Luckily this one was much more palatable. The teacher, Ms. Linda, found a magic lamp on her way to school. Each student is granted a wish by a djinn (not a genie! he insists). Even though the consequences of the wishes are similar in nature to the consequences of the lottery winnings, it felt more expected for the wishes to backfire. Students wished for a unicorn, a dinosaur, a lifetime supply of pizza, world peace, etc. Several students used their wish accidentally. This story is much more funny and less mean-spirited than the first one. This one I could see reading aloud to a class.

Vanaf 8 jaar

Peter read to me. This series is fantastic and should be mentioned more for elementary age kids. Once again classroom 13 is the lucky/unlucky recipient of fortune this time in wishes but again you must be careful what you wish for. We are now getting to know the characters so we could guess wishes and they are so on point with what kids would wish for and how it truly ends up being… the ending was fantastic.

Continuation of the series—so silly but the kids eat it up. A fun read with quick chapters like the last book.

Good for kids with a darker sense of humor and good to raise discussions about interesting topics with kids.
