Darius Wilson's preacher father has always envisioned his son as his successor in the pulpit. Darius has another passion, though - baseball. And when the Detroit Tigers draft him, Darius defies his father and heads to Lakeland, Florida to pursue his dream.
But what Darius has learned since childhood about the spiritual forces of evil comes into play when he realizes that Lakeland is home to a very dark presence. And without his father's help, Darius may not have what it takes to fend off a threat that could bring tragedy to the entire Tigers organization.
I love spiritual warfare books. This was a good one, but as a single christian woman, the description of sexual encounters were a bit more explicit than I would have liked them to be. It was a realistic portrayal of what it would actually be. I just probably won't trust reading another of Mr. Calabrese's books.
I was looking for something different than the mystery-suspense-romance books I had been reading. This definitely was a change-of-pace! Before I quite realized it, I was right in the middle of a suspense story about a gifted young ball player whose father thanks the son is destined to become a preacher. I enjoyed the introduction, the acknowledgments, and the dedication. I also loved the segue into the story itself. But I was a little unsettled by the series of scenes that began the book and seemed to be completely unrelated. After a while, however, the strands started to come together and I was thoroughly caught up in the story. From then on, I found it difficult to stop reading. The characters were realistic and familiar somehow. The author had a deft hand with dialogue and painting the scene. But it was the story that was so compelling. I wanted to know what happened next and I wanted to know what the characters did next. I wanted to know how it all turned out. Granted, dealing with demons is a little out of my experience. But the author made it all sound very plausible, and the story was so strong that I kept hurtling through to get to the next scene, the next chapter, the next event in the story. After I finished reading the book, I realized that's the story had then the real star of the novel. I didn't note whether this paragraph was written particularly well, or this character was drawn skillfully. All I paid attention to what the story. So if you like a good tale well told, I would definitely recommend this book to you. It was fascinating, uplifting, occasionally disturbing, and ultimately a great story.
