Amid the sublime beauty of Maine—its primordial forests, remote lakes, rugged mountains, and craggy coastline blooms a handmade culture fed by heritage, self-sufficiency, and collaboration. Handcrafted Art, Life, Harvest & Home features lively profiles of more than twenty artists, artisans, and craftspeople—weavers and potters, a painter, an architect, a boatbuilder, a leatherworker, bakers, lobster-men, and more—at work in the woods, towns, and cities of Maine, celebrating the triumphs and challenges of entrepreneurship and independence. Including more than 225 inspiring color photographs and intimate narrative portraits, Handcrafted Maine provides a window into the inner lives of creatives and brings to life the powerful environment and spirited character that nurture the unbridled ingenuity and common-sense approach to craft and life found Down East.
I really enjoyed the insight this book provides into the resilience of artists, and people who pursue an interest to become their career or in some cases their whole life. The photography is beautiful and it would be easy to assume the subjects live neat, idealistic lives. However the text rightly avoids glamorising the individuals; they work hard and their setbacks and sacrifices are noted. Throughout the landscape and climate of Maine makes its mark on each of the artists, builders, makers and farmers. Inspiring and comforting.
Whenever I travel, I like to find one locally made craft to bring home as my souvenir. After many trips to Maine, I've created quite a sweet little collection. So I was excited to find this book which exactly what the title suggests. Though I expected it to be much more about things like pottery and woodworking, the author really expanded my horizons into metal work, architecture, food, and more. Now I have new places to explore in this beautiful state!
What a fabulous book. I loved reading about the Artisans of Maine and the photographs, taken by Greta Rybus, are Magnificent. I want to visit Maine again and meet these artisans. I highly recommend this book.
