Man vs Maths: Everyday mathematics explained

Rate this book
Man vs Maths explains the complexities of the mathematics of modern life, showing how understanding a little more maths can improve your life and how to use it to your advantage. Plus along the way you'll discover how social media trends work, why the universe has a favourite number and what this means for you.

Mathematics is inescapable. Wherever you go, whatever you do, however you live your life, mathematics plays an important role. From controlling a city’s traffic to finding love, spending money online to building a skyscraper, the mathematics at play in our world is fascinating. Yet despite its ubiquity, for many of us, how the maths of today really works remains complex.

Mathematician Timothy Revell distills these complexities in this essential guide to modern-day mathematics, exploring questions such as; Could we solve queuing with an equation?  How do algorithms control our news?  What is the secret behind encryption codes?

The book opened with an interesting way to interpret 52! which is the number of ways a standard 52 cards deck shuffle.
Very fascinating from the start, you simply can't stop reading each chapter which is not very long but comprehensive enough. From "how to find treasure with mathematics" to "how to spot fraud using mathematics", all are written in a very fun way with jokes here and there.

A somewhat humorous and very simplified explanation behind several maths scenarios and discoveries.

I'm not sure I came away with much extra knowledge - perhaps I've heard about quite a few of these before (e.g. public key cryptography).

Still it is easy to read and fairly interesting.

Realizing how math is everyone and part of my life, just not aware before on it's significance.

Fun, leisure read and can be use to share with kids, on why Math is important.

I wasnt expecting to enjoy this author as much as the other Man vs titles, but so far, jolly good, I now know no two packs of playing cards have ever been shuffled the same, without cheating that is!
