Renowned for her unique eye for color and her ability to mix paint, pattern and texture to fabulous effect in creating beautiful spaces, Tricia Guild has now, for the first time ever, resolved to lay bare the secrets of her working methods and spell them out simply for us to follow – not to copy what she does but to learn how to use these skills in our own rooms. Taking inspiration from nature, the cityscape, a different period or culture or from the space itself, Paint Box provides visual inspiration, expert advice, a box of tricks and 45 of Tricia's tried-and-tested palettes. www.designersguild.com
I liked the practical advise about how to build a palette, how to use mood boards, and the tips and tricks throughout with how to tweak palettes/play certain elements up or down. However, the color palettes themselves weren't really what I was looking for and I thought they leaned a little blue/green. Overall, I was just hoping for more variety.
Of all the recent, color scheme books, I like this one best. I loved the colors and that you could look at the colors together, but also how they'd fit into a decorating scheme.
My favourite palette was “colors of silence” inspired by Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi, gorgeous soft tones of gray, mauve, lilac, chalk, petrol blue and sage, and I also liked “Japanese blossom” soft cloudy white, pink, leaf green, graphite. The references for fabric and wall treatments detailed at the end of the book are great too.
