Hailey Heartstone did not have an ordinary childhood. The only daughter of a merchant sailor, she grew up climbing ship’s rigging, balancing high above decks, but lately Hailey struggles to find the balance in her life. She fears that her days on the sea are coming to an end and that a course has been plotted for her that will end in a stifling arranged marriage. But all that is about to change.
In one fateful moment, Hailey’s life is ripped from its safe and predictable course and thrust into a storm of peril. She stumbles upon an ancient book and unlocks a dangerous power that thrusts her into a world full of deadly mists and phantom pirates intent on recovering what once was theirs.
Kidnapped from her family, Hailey must face true fear as she is forced into a journey to protect the power that she found and seek out those willing to help her save all that she loves before it is too late.

Publishers Description: Hailey Heartstone’s life is swept into a storm of peril after she stumbles upon an ancient talking book, the book of the legendary Pirate Queen. Once unlocked, its dangerous power thrusts her into a world full of deadly mists and phantom pirates intent on recovering what once was theirs. Kidnapped from her family, Hailey must face true fear as she is forced into a journey to protect the power that she found and seek out those willing to help her save all that she loves before it is too late.
Review: I could have sworn that this novel was written by a woman as the perspective is spot on when viewed through Hailey’s eyes. Hailey is special, but that’s ok here because the pirate book tells her so and yet she still wanders around in disbelief. Hailey, like most heroines, are written as being at once really smart and dumber than a bag of hotdogs. Why this is so, is mainly to build the plot and embellish the story line. It really is not needed when you have a strong protagonist, yet some feel it is necessary in order to develop the supporting characters.
This was a fun and imaginative romp through a world imbued with sinister royalty, good pirates, ancient tech and an airship! This novel was not only creative but highly entertaining. “So why you no give 5 stars!!”. You will know it when you read it, but Orin’s demise was not needed as it halted the movement and destroyed a good chunk of the plot. Additionally there were numerous grammatical errors.
For the past three years I've been looking for books to read to my daughter as she got older...I found another one today in The Pirate Queen.
The action, humor, intrigue, and heart in this book is set magnificently in a story of a young girl trying to find her place in a world that keeps telling her who and what she should be.
This is a great first book and I hope that the author continues to grow in his craft.
I'm new to reviewing, but something about this book caught my attention. I hope that my daughter, when she is old enough, can find as much enjoyment from this book as I did.
The novel is easy to read and has a plausible premise until the end. The ending, however, introduces many fabrications which just destroys the world paradigm the reader knows and the author has worked to establish. In doing so, the ending nullifies the plot and leaves the reader disappointed. Authors are not the sole producers of books, and as such some of the failure needs to be placed on the editor, Crystal Watanabe. When there are editing oversights such as proximal repetition: “Hailey…realized why no one had been on the island in two hundred years. Without the book they wouldn’t have gotten within a half mile of the island before the defenses ate them alive. It was no wonder no one else had been there since Rachael had left over two hundred years ago.”
Enough said about that.
The novel is enjoyable with vivid but otherwise textbook descriptions of characters and environments.
But the story is not good enough for me to want to read a sequel should it ever be written.
i loved this book! i’m not just saying this cause my dad, H.N.Klett, is the author, but also cause i generally enjoyed this book. it was a fun read and really caught the readers eye and dragged them in. i’m so proud of my dad, and i can’t wait for the next one :)
I like this book., it is a great and interesting story to it. I was surprised that after reading it turned from magical to science fiction. Didn't expect it at all.
It isn't everyday that you open up a book and it speaks to you. If Hailey thought that was weird, she wouldn't be prepared for all the other new inventions and revelations that she would discover on her journey. A smothering grandmother, a flying pirate ship, an evil queen, and a quest that Hailey alone can undertake... these are just a few of the surprises that you'll find in this new novel, Pirate Queen: Book of the Navigator.
H.N. Klett's novel is interesting. The world he has created is unique and filled with variety. And the story, though filled with common themes, is also full of unexpected occurrences. If you want to stretch your imagination, this may be a good book for you.
An engaging and creative debut and hopefully the beginning of a great series. The characters are interesting and there is plenty of scope for character development and 'branch off' stories. My main gripe was the low standard of publishing with far to many grammatical and typographical errors.
I received my copy free through Goodreads giveaways
I got this book in a goodreads giveaway and I thought it was cool that it came signed by the author and with a bookmark. It's a cute, fun adventure aimed at tweens or teens. There wasn't any graphic violence or sex or swearing. This book had numerous editing issues that need to be addressed.
