This novella follows three best friends approaching middle age who go camping to relive their glory days. The years and miles have split them apart, but each hopes to rekindle their friendship with beers and stories around the campfire. Everything goes as planned until they take a fateful hike around a lake bordering the Three Sisters Wilderness Area.

Their leader, Steve, suddenly falls ill and needs to go back to camp. He hopes a little sleep will beat his illness and his friends Ben and Mike wait, hoping Steve will get better.

Then Steve wakes up.

He is no longer himself, and proceeds to play a game of cat-and-mouse with his friends through the forest over the next few days, battling exhaustion and illness as they all try to survive in the wilderness.

The Worst Camping Trip, Ever! Unless Fleeing Frantically through the Forest appeals to you.

Ben is not much of an outdoor enthusiast but looks forward to joining his friends Steve and Mike for a boy’s trip to the woods. Now in the middle of nowhere, things take a horrid turn for the worst and he finds himself running and fighting for his life in a very hostile environment.

Stephany Brandt has crafted a rather disturbing tale. The beginning of this tale seems harmless enough. I was actually beginning to get bored. Then Steve woke up. The ensuing drama was tragic, disgusting and had me on the edge of my seat. Ms. Brandt’s detail was over the top. I needed a glass of wine and a bath to recover.

OK, horror is not my usual fare. And there was way too much crap to contend with. The finale seemed too simple. Perhaps there was some faint foreshadowing of things to come hiding in the tale but I suspect Ben will never go camping again, EVER!
