Loving Deviant

I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

4 Awesome Smutty McSmut Stars
All I can say is:
Yes, Laurann Dohner!
THIS is the Dohner Party I have been waiting for.
No, not the cannibalism party.
The fuckfest party.
Seriously though.
I have read (*runs to check bookshelf*) 31 Dohner books.
Let me repeat that:
I HAVE READ THIRTY-ONE DOHNER BOOKS.
In other words, I love me some Dohner smut.
However.
More recently, I had actually stopped reading Dohner's latest stuff, because the last few books I read of hers were....well...bombs.
For me anyway.
But this one?
She came through like John Travolta making a Pulp Fiction comeback here, people.
And.
I.
Dug.
It.
This was very reminiscent of Dohner's earlier Cyborg and Zorn books - which I loved. Deviant and Venice find themselves in the ridiculous cirCUMstance of her needing him to save her and her pledging to be his veritable sex slave.
Totally ridiculous plot premise?
Yes.
Do I love it?
You bet your ass I do.
I loved Deviant.
He is Mavo's son. Remember Mavo?
I also really liked Venice.
Within five pages of starting this thing, I was like:
Because I could already tell it was going to bring my milkshake to the yard.

Now, this is the Laurann Dohner that I love and know! She's back! And I seriously missed her. Oh and btw. why did I not know of this book sooner?! It's like all of a sudden there's a new Laurann Dohner book out there and no one is bothering to advertise it more. It's so weird...but thanks to my GR friends I still found out about this sweet, lovely book. Gosh, the story is just so wonderful and while their first meeting isn't how you'd like to meet your new love it's still quite interesting, when you really think about it. I mean who would have thought that you can find love in such a place, right? And I mean love love, not you know what (and we all know what you just thought about...). ;)
Anyway, I loved everything...well...maybe not Deviants mother. She's really a piece of work, ugh, poor anybody that has to deal with her. It's been awhile since I've read the previous book in this series, but thankfully I read a friends review that had explained the background, like who's Mavo and how he fits into this story. I really felt bad for him to be with such a cruel woman for so long. Maybe we'll get his story soon. *fingers crossed* Now, as far as Deviand and Venice go, man, I trully loved them. Both had a bad past and while we sadly don't get to see much of that I still loved how their paths led them to each other. They make a wonderful team and they finally found what they've been missing for so long.
I think the best part about the plot was that there's basically almost no drama and that's really refreshing. Every book that I'm reading now has some kind of drama, like getting kidnapped or almost rapped or god knows what but with this book, there's none of that and I loved it! It's really just a short, sweet story about two people from completely different worlds (like literally) that finally find what they need in each other. The only complain is of course that the book could have been longer, but that's details. I simply have to have something to bicker about, lol.
Definitely recommend!

I loved this book! Deviant is a wonderful hero! So sweet, loving, protective and don't forget gorgeous! And a virgin! He is definitely in my top ten heroes! I also loved Venice! She is a smart, strong and protective heroine! I loved that she was so honest with Deviant and neither tried to play games or hide their feelings. It was a very enjoyable read! I will definitely read more in this series! Thank you to Leonor for loaning me this book! :)

Deviant & Venice
Venice was never particularly lucky in her life.
Firstly, she had a horrible accident which cost her legs, her arm and a few internal organs.
Then, she was held locked up by the Earth government lying on a bed because her blood was too valuable and rare to waste.
After that, when she finally with the help of her sister got artificial organs and she managed to escape Earth, she became hostage of a pretend-to-be future husband. In reality he was the owner of a space whorehouse and a con.
Venice is desperate. She has no problem being someone's property, as long as this someone has dark skin, gorgeous body and intense blue eyes. The fact that he is a virgin is an actual bonus.
Deviant was never particularly lucky in his life.
A Cyborg who was born as the second child of his father after his mother made a deal with her fourth husband Mavo, was not really ever loved by his mummy. His mother considered him more a burden that she had to tolerate.
Deviant’s main problem is his coloring. It seems Cyborg ladies do not particularly like dark skin and neon blue eyes. They consider him ugly and defect.
As a result, nowadays in his mid-thirties, he has never gotten laid. His last option is the whorehouse, where the sex bots won’t mind his unattractiveness. Deviant is a nice Cyborg with feelings. He just wants to be loved.
And this is how Deviant and Venice meet.
I loved their story. They are perfect for each other. Needless to say the book has many laughing-out-loud moments such as
-gorgeous Deviant is trying to explain to Venice how ugly he is, while Venice is drooling all over him and cannot believe what she hears
-Deviant being afraid of a fork
-Deviant’s mother offering Venice other options during her wedding day
etc.
I really like the new direction of Cyborgs’ stories. The Cyborgs have feelings and principles, while humans look more and more heartless and unethical.

The beginning is interesting, but onces they reach Garden the story gets tedious, repetitive with respect to precious books and world.

Deviant is the son of Mavo, Cyan’s adopted father from Taunting Krell. He has a “defect”. His skin is much darker than other cyborgs. No female will ask him to join in a family unit. Mavo takes Deviant to a brothel…he is 35 years old and has never had sex. Venice is hiding at the brothel and makes Deviant a deal he can’t resist.
This was very low angst and sweet. Deviant is a great hero and so good to Venice. It was sweet (and hot) to see him learn to pleasure Venice and Venice was a great teacher! She is equally as good to Deviant and accepts him "flaws" and all. She is a caring and sweet heroine which is everything Deviant needs.
I want to mention that Mavo is a wonderful father to Deviant. I really, really hope he gets a female to love and cherish him. He deserves it so much.
There was potential here for more. There were several things that could have caused some conflict that would have resulted in a longer book. There was the council, Deviant’s mother other cyborgs…none of which really caused any issues (other than Deviant's mother being a total evil bitch). So if you are expecting drama and action that is seen in previous Cyborg books you won’t find it here. But, it was a good low angst story and I did enjoy it. Sometimes you just need a sweet story.

Pretty disappointed with this lightweight offering. Insta love and very little conflict between the two main characters. There wasn't enough to the rest of the plot to really add anything. So sorry and disappointed . Many of the titles in this series have been wonderful. Sad face.

The heroine: Venice - she is on a space station where she was running from Darvis who had charmed her via vid chats. Though he had been catfishing her to be his mail order bride. When she got there he was going to make her be his slave labor in his brothel. She’d been desperate enough to marry a stranger after being in an accident and trapped in a bed for four years. She had been scarred and crippled until she was given improved limbs.
The Hero: Deviant - he is a second generation cyborg, born as a free male on the planet garden where the cyborgs escaped to after escaping the government on earth. He is the son of Malvo who was friends and a father figure to Cyan in Taunting Krell. Now Deviant is a man in his own right and often goes on missions in space for the cyborgs, he has a high status in the community. Though he is considered undesirable among the female cyborgs because his skin is darker grey than most.
The story: Malvo takes his son Deviant to a pleasure ship to have his first intimate experience with a sex bot. Venice was hiding in a brothel for sex bots when she overhears Deviant and Malvo talking and she finds out Deviant is a 35 year old virgin who thinks no female would ever want him due to his imperfections. Venice knew immediately they were cyborgs and though Deviant was handsome.
Venice had a really cool backstory about how she got her upgrades and how she was treated after her accident. I liked her and her story. I also liked Deviant’s story about how the females on his planet didn’t want him. This was probably the best of the series so far.
This book was told in dual points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Mindy Kennedy. She has done a terrific job with this series, I have listened to eight books in this series back to back and haven’t gotten tired of the narration at all. I usually dislike solo narration but haven’t minded this series at all. Similar to Laurann Dohner’s VLG series which I also loved.

4 1/2 stars. I knew going in I would love this book and I was not wrong. I will admit Laurann Dohner is just one of those authors who's writing just does it for me. I can honestly say I haven't read a book from her I didn't like, and I am always waiting for one of her books to be released. I re-read her books often. Loving Deviant was perfect I know some are saying they wanted it longer, and I'm not going to lie I wouldn't have complained if it was but I loved this book as is. It didn't feel rushed and I never felt like I wasn't getting the whole story.
Deviant was an amazing hero, Strong smart but also damaged. Venice was his perfect partner, I loved that she got mad on his behalf when he was called anything but perfect. I also loved Deviants Father Mavo, he was such a great dad and I really, really hope he gets a book and a hea because he really deserves it. I hated Deviants mother Bazelle she was and is just a horrible person/cyborg I was so glad Mavo and Deviant didn't let her push them around she really is just horrible and a waste of space. I will say the more I read the more I hate the cyborg woman, and I know they aren't all bad but when they are bad they loathsome ( I actually had to look on google to find a word I though fit the mean cyborg woman).
I can't wait till the next book, I was so happy to see it is Stag. I can't wait to see him fall on his but and find the perfect woman. The wait has seemed liked forever since I had my last Cyborg book, though it does no matter what and I couldn't have been more happy (well ok I would have loved an epilogue thrown in but I know no one is surprised by that statement from me). I'm so happy to see Laurann Dohner doing better after all she has been through I can't not wish her anything but the best.

Deviant isn’t the usual overbearing arrogant cyborg and it was a nice change of pace. The romance is very straight forward with very little conflict. As is norm for this series there is a lot of sexy times.
The Cyborg’s still have this human hate going on and I wish we would see a change on that front. We don’t get to see their planet nor how it works in this one. It focus on the romance; between Venice and Deviant.
Loving Deviant was enjoyable, a nice escape, and a quick read.

Having read this entire series within a week I might have a slightly different perspective on this book. It was like Cyborg Seduction "lite". The dialogue was more simplistic, the characters naive and sweet. Not really what I was used to from the rest of the series.
That being said it was enjoyable. Venise and Deviant are super sweet together. It was low drama, low angst. It just did not have the same feel as the prior books so I could not love it quite as much. If you have never read a book in the series, this is not indicative of the rest of the series. Coal's book is the closest to this one. .
Made me really feel for Mavo. If I get a vote I want him to find a woman asap! He totally deserves it after what we learn in this book!

5 Loving Deviant Stars
YAYA!! Ok I will admit I was hoping this book was Eve’s sister and Gene. But I am so happy it wasn't, not that I don’t want their book because I do. But this book oh it just hit me in all the feels.
Deviant is the son of Mavo we met him in Taunting Krell’s book. He adopted Cyan.
Deviant is a 35 yr old virgin, not common for their race. But because of his skin color and his eyes his “defects” no female cyborg wants his genes or him in their family unit.
So Mavo takes Deviant to a brothel? To be pleasured by a sexbot. Only he finds himself with an Earther Venice. She is in need of help to get off Earth and away from the men who want to sell her into the whore houses.
She too has “defects” as well. Earth wants her for her blood. But she is expendable.
The connection between Deviant and Venice is strong, you would think it’s because they are both in need of something from each other but it’s so not like that. They see beyond what everyone else sees.
This is probably my favorite love story of this whole series! I want to see Mavo get a girl too!
Mindy out does herself with this series, I can’t wait for more. I really hope she is the narrator because she just brings these characters to life.

So Mavo takes Deviant to a brothel? To be pleasured by a sexbot. Only he finds himself with an Earther Venice. She is in need of help to get off Earth and away from the men who want to sell her into the whore houses.
She too has “defects” as well. Earth wants her for her blood. But she is expendable.
The connection between Deviant and Venice is strong, you would think it’s because they are both in need of something from each other but it’s so not like that. They see beyond what everyone else sees.
This is probably my favorite love story of this whole series! I want to see Mavo get a girl too!
Mindy out does herself with this series, I can’t wait for more. I really hope she is the narrator because she just brings these characters to life.

I loved the H/h. I would give them 4.5 stars. The H was a sweetheart to the h. He was all alpha male who wanted to care for & protect her. She was his world. He would destroy anyone who tried to take her from him. I never thought they were sickly sweet together.

The h had courage & was determined to create a good life for herself. She stood up for herself. She wasn't snarky or bitchy nor a Mary Sue.
I was ok w/ them not having conflict between them. I just wanted more outside conflict surrounding them. Not a lot of substance to the book. I loved the H's father. I hope he gets his own book.
I thought the writing flowed well. The book is told in 3rd person dual pov between H/h. I enjoyed how LD smoothly interwove (head-hopped) the H/h pov together. So many new authors aren't doing this or doing it badly which sucks.
Personally I thought 3.99 was to much for a 166 page SP book. I bought the book at kobo w/ a 75% off code so I only paid a $1.

I loved the first Cyborgs' books, but lately they've become a little bit repetitive... :(
Deviant and Venice story is way to simplified. The conflict is almost inexistent and very contrieved ...
I hope Ms. Dohner will return to the style in the fist books...

All about me, formulas, and cover candy
What does it say about me that I wanted to read a book with the word "deviant" in the title because of the long-haired, blue-eyed pinup on the cover? I'm not usually such a sucker for a handsome face and digitally enhanced abs, but this one....wow! I read three of Laurann Dohner's cyborg books years ago, and then haven't picked up one in a long time, until.....Loving Deviant.
And what does it say about this book that I thought the best scene was the showdown between Mavo and Bazelle, Deviant's cyborg parents? I think it says that the book was formulaic, and that hasn't changed since I stopped reading Dohner's cyborg books in 2012. I liked the sweetness and understanding between Venice and Deviant. Unfortunately, the emotional center was not matched by an action-adventure component. Deviant is a freaking cyborg, and the most physically demanding thing we saw him do was carry Venice onboard. The most cybernetic thing we saw him do was communicate to a wall panel. I was disappointed. The promising plot lines were truncated for the so-so sex scenes, which got started right away with an impossibly improbable premise.
But somehow....I still thought this book was okay, probably due to Laurann Dohner having a solid, workable formula for her cyborg books. It wasn't my favorite; it wasn't the worst. It falls solidly in the middle.

Decent story.

I plan to read more by this author.
One criticism... I HATE when authors use "bundle of nerves" and other nasty terms to describe a womans parts. I also hate when "Dick" is used to describe a mans parts. Just my thing..
Oh one more thing!.. didn't care for the heroine's dialogue. It was a bit on the immature side. Too slangy for my liking.
Thus the loss of a star. Otherwise it was awesome

Cyborg females on Garden do not tolerate imperfections or flaws in their males when considering them for a family unit and/or breeding. Deviant is classified as being one such male. Thirty five years of age and unable to contract with a female because of his existing flaws, Deviant is all but resigned to his fate.
Taking matters into his own hands, Deviant's father arranges a session at an automated pleasure center on a remote space station with android sex bots so Deviant can learn and excel at the skills necessary to pleasure a cyborg female. Skills that could be the difference between remaining alone and single for the rest of his days, or contracting into an existing family unit.
Venice is a wanted woman. Wanted by Earth where she was held a prisoner and now on a remote space station where she was lured under false pretensions by a fake husband to work in a brothel. Seeing her last chance to escape, Venice seduces Deviant hoping her skills will be enough to persuade him to take her with him when he leaves. Hoping the sexy cyborg will look past her Earth origins to consider keeping her.
Either way, it's forbidden to bring unauthorized beings to Garden, the cyborg homeland. Garden is protected and safe as long as spies and/or agents of the Earth government don't know their location. It's going to take more than just Venice's word to convince the Council Venice is as much as victim as the cyborgs. Time neither has if Venice's "husband" gets to her first.

I've loved this ongoing series and was totally excited to hear the author published a new installment. About frickin' time I say.
Personally, I can't remember Deviant as it's been a while so he may have been a secondary character or may not. I just don't remember. But. That issue didn't distract from my enjoyment of this book as it's pretty much a straightforward romance so I guess I have the opinion that this can be read as a standalone (for those interested in that sort of thing). Characters from earlier installments have cameo appearances (so a reader would lose out on knowing their back stories) but not to any extent that it will affect this installment.
The overall story reads as a futuristic sci-fi chick lit romance. Much of the content deals with the heroine's plight and her journey to get to the end of the story. Deviant's angst issues are featured, but take a back seat to Venice's. Which really is a shame as it resulted in a disconnect for me with his character. Vague non-spoiler quote: "“You can choose your friends but you sho' can't choose your family...” ~Harper Lee
Regarding the adult content scenes. Yup. Hot toe curling adult content with a side of kink is the name of the game for these two. Frequently and repeatedly. So, if you're a fan, you're gonna be thrilled. If you're not, well, you obviously haven't read other works by this author and might want to give it a pass. Either way. Smiles all around for any potential reader.
My issues. The major one is that, for the most part, this is a straight forward romance read. Missing was any sort of action, suspense, thriller, intrigue, or twists that I've come to expect from the overall series to date. It was just so ..... anti-climatic. Insta love and chemistry alone usually don't do enough for me to call a book a success.
The author missed opportunities that could have added depth to the overall world building and thus elevated the story from a romance between two individuals who had issues to something much more. An early non-spoiler example is Venice & Deviant's escape from the space station. I was waiting for something (anything) to happen as a foil to showcase the depth the two would go to get Valerie off that space station. Nothing is easy in life, especially when you sign a contract..... I could cite more examples but those WOULD be spoiler info.
Details were also problematic for me. When information is featured and details given that are more than just a passing comment in the story line, I do expect a certain degree of follow up and/or resolution. Not doing so provides a void that irritates me. I don't appreciate dangling subplot material.
The silver lining is that Stag's story is next on deck. Crossing fingers and toes that HIS female makes him work for it and the two don't just jump into bed and life is all sunshine & roses.

This series in general has been a huge hit or miss for me. I did like this book for the most part, but I have to admit, it was pretty uneventful in general. Cyborg saves woman from earth. Lots of steamy sex. HEA. The end. There was no action aside from in the bedroom.
Pros:
* Fairly priced at $3.99 - The books in the New Species series by this same author are all over $7 which is a bit extreme in my opinion for an electronic book
* I liked tha the hero was the virgin for a change
* The hero was considered flawed by his society and I really enjoyed how the heroine adored everything about the hero and only saw him as handsome and in a positive light
Cons:
*Pretty low in the suspense department - it was almost too easy - There was no conflict aside from Deviants mother not approving of the heroine but even that had no reprecussions.
* More interactions from previous characters in the previous books would have been nice - they barely made any appearances
Overall, it was just an ok cyborg romance for me. Nothing overly memorable or noteworthy. I don’t think it was worth its $3.99 price, although I was pleased that this author has made her book prices a bit more practical. I'm undecided on if I will continue this series. I love the new species series she wrote, but this one just seems to lack intensity.

So, I love my cyborg crack. This was pretty run of the mill and could have been tons better with more details.
I liked the heroine and the connection back to what is happening on Earth. Her practical nature was refreshing. The romance was sweet.
What was lame was that there is still all this human hate on the Cyborg planet. We get to see very little about how the planet works. This would have been much more interesting.
The father should get his own romance.

I love this series it was my absolute favorite. It had everything I loved....Cyborgs, space, suspense, action, conflict with some resolution, hot guys with kick @ss chicks and many variations of sexy times. However,.......
This book fell flat.....for me. I like the characters and the premise had promise. Deviant is facing prejudice on his world but, it seems due to his fathers love Deviant has become a lovely hot guy inside and out. Venice has faced her own battles however, we only get to briefly hear about them so you will not get to take that ride with her in this book.
The story just seemed to be rushed and all of those things I love were missing. There was so much to work with too. Whereas, before we would live through the rescue and turmoil of our hero or heroin, now we get a brief background. The suspense when meeting and trying to escape was just not there. Where were the guys trying to find Venice, sleeping? So many opportunities for conflict and resolution to beef up the story and take us on that ride we love were missed.
As much as I want these authors to crank out the books to satisfy my need to eat them up. I would much rather wait a little longer to read a well written book with more substance. This story is sweet and fluffy and very much all surface stuff if that is what you are looking for......Me, I would like a little more meat please. *Insert Oliver Twist pitiful look here*

I loved the potential of Deviant as a character, and it was pretty much wasted. The story was sweet enough to give you cavities, there was zero real plot or conflict.
It was a yawn from start to finish, and the only reason I'm not rating it lower is because I've liked this series so much overall.

I remember Deviant from previous books and I didn't really like him. I think he was bottling up lots of resentment towards fellow cyborgs. They always looked down on him because of his so-called flaws. So what if his skin is a darker gray and his blue eyes glow a little...this doesn't make him a freak!
Well, it kind of does since no female has asked him to join a family unit. His father Mavo (who I love and hopes gets his own HEA soon) brings him to a sexbot brothel so he can learn about sex. This is where he runs into Venice and helps her escape.

It was a quick read. Mostly sexy times with a little chit chat about how Deviant felt unwanted by all the females and even his own mother didn't want him.
I felt more of an emotional connection with Coal or Zorus in the earlier books.
I feel like we're going to see more of the "Angels" organization on Earth that rescued the heroine from the hospital where she was being kept. And more of Mavo (Deviant's father) who had some developments in his life.
I do think you'll be sort of lost on the background detials without reading some of the earlier books. Not too much is explained about the Council and the earlier characters. But the book reads fine as a stand alone too.

Such an incredibly sweet addition to the cyborg series.
I really loved Deviant and Venice. Such sweet characters- this hero totally reminded me of species and he had such great sense of righteousness. Venice had escaped hard times and made a wonderful heroine.
I hope Mavo and Stag get their books too!
