In 2016, Donna Jay published her first sapphic romance. Since then, she has published eighteen more books, three of which made the number one spot in lesbian fiction.
Her stories feature resilient women, thought-provoking storylines, have plenty of heat, and are all set against the stunning backdrop of her home country, New Zealand.
She also writes sweet romances under the name Diana Jayne.
When she’s not writing, Donna can be found with her nose stuck in a book, or her backside glued to the sofa, binge-watching post-apocalyptic movies.
Claire and Zoe has had their fair share of hurt and pain, making them come at life cautious and distrusting. Funny how Fate has a way of knowing what you need even when you don't know it and for Claire and Zoe, it's a friend and companion. They see through the pain in each other and let each other be, but silently are there for one another in any way they can. Their relationship blossoms over time from friends into something special, one that only two people who has gone through what they have could appreciate and nurture.
The story is a slow beautiful burn, feeling their hesitancy and their need, making you root for them the whole way through. This may be a unconventional love story for some, being that it is between two females, but it is still at heart a story about love. The sex was tastefully erotic, their gender only adds to the sensuality of it all. They are beautiful together and what they share is something that any romantic and erotica lover can appreciate. It was a lovely trip down under with a side of kink and I am happy to have made the journey. Definitely looking forward to more.
3 1/2 Stars. I didn't even want to mention the cover, because I am sure Donna Jay is sick of hearing about it. I also see there is a new cover choice, but for me I liked this one. I know it bothered some people, but I thought it was a pretty hot cover. Though, I did think this was going to be pure erotica with a little storyline, and it's not. This is a fully fleshed out romantic story that has some erotic scenes.
It's kind of hard to find good lesfic erotic romances. Normally either a story is pure erotica or a romance. Some of the best erotica I have read, comes with a decent storyline, so I liked this erotic romance mix.
I enjoyed both main characters. I thought they both had some quirks, that I wasn't crazy about, but people in the real world are not perfect. I particularly enjoyed the New Zealand setting. Donna Jay did a nice job or weaving the culture and phrases into the story, while letting people like me (from the USA) understand what those phrases and things actually meant.
I also liked the realism of some of the intimate scenes. A small complaint of mine is in a lot of lesfic romances, a character without a lot of experience, or their first time, they suddenly becomes a porn star. Donna Jay wrote these scenes very realistically. A character having to adjust their neck, because a partner moves. A characters knees cracked when the got up from kneeling on a hard wood floor. Little details like that, I thought were very well written.
If you feel in the mood for some erotic romance, than this book may just be for you.
A sexy romance, set in New Zealand, with a side of spice! I adored Zoe and Claire, and the snippets of NZ, but then, well, that's to be expected being a kiwi-gal.
Considering it's my book, you can bet your boots I loved it. So much in fact, I've read it 100 times. Oh wait, that was part of the editing process. :)
The story took off in all manner of directions I never anticipated. As per the cover, I expected it to be a highly erotic read. While there are some delicious scenes, my heroines took a longtime to get there. Which with any luck will make sense to readers as the story unfolds.
Having a Canadian character allowed me to capture some of my beautiful homeland, New Zealand.
The story is set in the Hawkes Bay region, Taradale/Napier, with a trip to Lake Taupo, and a stop at the scenic Waipunga Waterfalls.
As someone clever said -- don't judge a book by its cover. I would recommend Finding Love Down Under to anyone who enjoys erotic romances with some light BDSM elements, but also with a sweet love story and meaningful plot. 3.5 stars, rounded up
Donna Jay never disappoints. I always love her blend of romance, sensuality, and character development/growth (and seriously, how sexy is that cover?). Her stories always come off very realistic, with very realistic people, and I seriously love her for that. This story was no different. We are introduced to Claire and Zoe, who are both escaping some baggage and some not so nice exes. In a sympathetic, but not thought out move, Claire offers room and board to Zoe for her to come work at her vineyard doing housework and cooking, and any other randomness that Claire needs. Zoe is in a new place, with no friends, and no hope; so she jumps at the chance of assistance from Claire, pushing the thought from her mind that she is taking a risk with someone who is a complete stranger, that she’s known for all of 10 minutes.
What we get from there is a very sweet and realistic slow build romance. Zoe and Claire are getting to know each other as employer/employee and friends before anything else. There are some super sexy and sensual scenes, as well as some light BDSM, but I wouldn’t consider this a BDSM story (for those of you that need that information). This is also dual POV between Zoe and Claire, so we get a nice build up of what they are both going through as they navigate their growing feelings for each other.
Also, Claire’s ex is crazy. I don’t really know what else to say on that without being spoilerish, but I needed to get my thought out there that she is one crazy piece of work.
All in all, another great story by Donna Jay.
I received a copy of this story from the author via the Goodreads BDSM Group TPE Bar. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Kink! I'm reading about kink! Well, nothing hardcore, but still. Spanking! French maid costumes! Light bondage!
Donna Jay has done what few are able to do: appeal bdsm elements to me. I fully support consenting adult sex, but that's not normally my thing, ya know? Nonetheless, Jay painted vivid pictures of desire from Zoe (fictional character crush, ahoy!) and her subtle reactions to paddles and butt-slapping. In fact, the kink in this story is mild and palatable for noobs like myself. Reading it was hot, too! Per my usual whining, I wish it'd had more sex scenes, especially after all that buildup in the former half of the book.
Zoe's a dream. She's pure and timid and derives pleasure from being smacked around a bit. Basically a PERFECT character. Claire, however, didn't manage to get too much of my love. I didn't hate her, yet well into the story, I came to the conclusion that she wasn't my cuppa tea. No biggie.
I present the biggest of thumbs up for the overarching theme of consent! Bravo! Well done without preachiness. The writing is well done along with the Canadian vs NZ vernacular bits. I liked that a lot.
Unfortunately, I loved their sex, but I didn't fall for their love. So, unless a re-read will change my mind, I'll keep this in the 3.5 star section. And my eyes are now open to more flavorful sex in my reading life!
It seems like a lot of the reviews for Finding Love Down Under focus on the cover, so let's get that out of the way. The cover doesn't match the contents of the book. Frankly, I expected a one-handed read (which I don't mind, because they have their place!), and instead I got a really lovely romance with mild BDSM elements. If you're giving this book a pass because of the cover, I'd really encourage you to at least download the sample and check it out.
I liked the story and thought it was well plotted, paced and executed. The characters were also great, and I enjoyed seeing Zoe and Claire get to know each other and become romantically involved. As a Calgarian, it was great to not only see someone from my city, but actually even see a bit of the city itself in there!
If you're looking for a book to pass an afternoon, this is well worth the time. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the author has in store for us.
3.5* – I had liked the interaction between Claire and Zoe so much in A Special Gift, the bonus short story in F is for Five Sapphic Tales, that I wanted to go back to their origin story, discover how they met and why that blindfold was such a big deal.
Reading an established author’s debut novel after you’ve read some of their later work is often fascinating, as you get to see how their writing has evolved, or not.
Finding Love Down Under is Donna Jay’s first full-length novel, and it starts with a bang. Claire finds out her girlfriend has been filming their sexual encounters and making money from posting the videos on porn sites, taking care of hiding her own face under masks but leaving Claire easily recognizable. Instead of crumbling under the weight of the betrayal, Claire picks herself up and moves on. A year later, she’s the owner of a vineyard. She meets Zoe by chance and, realising the young Canadian needs a job and a place to stay, she takes her under her wing. Both women soon find out they’re attracted to each other and are both into kink. They also both have trust issues to work out.
One of the reasons I love reading so much is that I get to travel. I love that not all anglophone lesfic is written in American English and that sometimes idioms find their way into the dialogue. I love that sense of discovering something new, of shifting a little to the side, not always being on firm ground surrounded by landscapes and people I know. Donna Jay does a great job of keeping the language true to her characters while still making it understandable to those not familiar with New Zealand.
Donna Jay’s writing has definitely evolved since she wrote this novel, which at times feels a little choppy, but her trademarks are already here. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was a lot more plot than I expected. It’s complete instalust/instalove, as is often the case in erotic romances. The characters are complex, Zoe is a sweetheart and Claire is kind and careful, there’s mild BDSM and power play, and the recurring themes are trust, communication and, most important to me, always, consent. There’s also a very real romantic element, which makes this story both hot and sweet.
In spite of the cover, which I dislike, this book is a nice romance with likable main characters. I almost passed it by because of the cover, if not for friend's reviews. Although I have read some D/s it isn't my favorite and in some instances not comfortable to read. So I fast forwarded some of the scenes. But that's just me. Nevertheless I liked the book. The descriptions of NZ makes me want to visit it again. Ha! I knew I wanted to return a few days into the trip. I would have liked to of learned more about Claire's vineyard, unless I missed it, it doesn't seem to be productive yet? Oh, and Claire's drooling and enjoyment of a McDonald's burger? Really? Now if it was an In 'N Out burger - I'd believe it!
Another enjoyable read by Jay. I've had this on my Goodreads to-read list for awhile but couldn't bring myself to purchase and thankfully because of Scribd I didnt need to. I really liked both characters and how their relationship developed. There is little angst or real drama which I have come to associate with Jay books. Overall a good read with a touch of BDSM...really only spanking and light restraint.
I thought this was an okay read. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad, either. Structurally, it's well written so you won't see typos, etc, and it's a fairly fast read.
The dynamic between Claire and Zoe is believable and, if you're into kink, all the better. I liked how protective and responsible Claire was of Zoe and Zoe was a sweet character.
I think for me what held it back is that Claire and Zoe in some ways seemed to be written in a short-hand, clipped manner. Some plot points had the same issue, as if they were forced or done too quickly. Despite the author giving the couple time to get to know each other before they officially came together in some ways things moved too fast or conclusions were jumped to which I found jarring. Some of Claire's reactions were so abrupt I had to stop and remind myself why/what had triggered her. It's hard to put my finger on what was missing exactly. Some of the intimacy was developed off of the page so maybe I needed to see more of it unfold.
Whoa... This is one sexy, kinky, love story with femme/femme characters. Main characters, Claire and Zoe, had partners who abused their trusts which resulted in Claire trying to stay away, lived like a hermit and avoided social media like a plague and Zoe, having nightmares and feared the dark. Both were into kink, BDSM, role-playing and amidst it all, they both found each other and fell in love. It’s not just a book on erotica. There’s a love story in it; a very sweet one at that which is well-written.
P.S. Seen 2 different covers (a sexy lady hugging a really sexy pair of legs and the other is a landscape somewhere in NZ I believed) and liked them both 😀
As much as I love the provocative cover, it sends the wrong message about the book. This was a sweet love story, and the newer cover, , is more appropriate, I suppose.
The beginning was crazy and definitely hooked me. Amy's betrayal was severe, and I'm glad Claire found Zoe. Both Claire and Zoe were likable, very real characters with their own flaws. Claire cracked me up with her mannerisms . The love scenes were good; I could feel the chemistry between these two. The BDSM kink was light.
The New Zealand countryside was a charming setting. I loved that the author included New Zealand phrases, like teetotalers, and even mentioned the Vegemite shortage. I have a few friends from New Zealand that have talked about their mothers stocking up on Marmite, because of fear of another shortage. That was definitely a nice touch in the book.
What kept this from being 4 stars for me was the lack of conflict after 50%. I got the feeling early on that Claire & Zoe would get their hea and there really was minimal conflict between the two after they started officially dating. I think I'm in the mood for more conflict & angst.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Oh my dear sweet Claire and Zoe. Just the cutest things ever. This was my first 100% FF book. Claire and Zoe cross paths at the exact moment they need to. Claire and Zoe both recovering from heartbreak, they help each other forget the past and look forward to the future. In short...this book was happily every after with Hot Hot Hot sex splashed throughout. LOVED!!!!!!
A quick read with an interesting couple coming to terms with past relationships and learning to trust one another. The writing improves as the story unfolds and I found myself turning pages wanting to know if Claire and Zoe would find their HEA.
Claire takes matters into her own hands and set off to a vineyard. This place changes her life forever and fantasies come true. This story has captured my heart immediately. I had to make myself stop reading in order to get my work done. This book has everything I love in a romance plus it contains very hot smoking scenes and a black rectangular leather item. This is my first read from this author and she has not disappointed me. I can heartily recommend it to anyone.
3.3 stars. Quick n' fun read to pass some time. Just don't expect any depth here. It's a little bit of angst with tons of sugar. All the major issues are almost instantly resolved or not even explored - like how a city girl suddenly wants to live out in the country on the other side of the world. She just does, that's it. Technically well written though, if it had actually looked at all these issues in depth it might be a 5 star book. But in it's current form it's a light read worth checking out if you're like me and can't find another book that grabs your fancy.
I received an ARC of this story from the author for an honest review. I really enjoyed this story. In my opinion it had just the right amount of drama, romance, sex and humor. I am sure I will be reading this story again and again.
Well.. i actually dont know what else i wanted to say 😧 but yeah the two main characters, i like them alots. Zoe is so sweet from what i see (read) i kinda like her lots. I feel like the problem is a bit rush tho. Idk but yeah i like this book.
I found this book to be a hidden gem. Most of the time when I read BDSM-oriented stories, they tend to fall into the category of explicit erotica. Believe me when I say that this is not a problem for me. I enjoy a well written sex romp, and add some good kink in there and I'm a very happy reader. So I was ready for Finding Love Down Under to have some hot scenes and some kinky twists. And what I got instead was a sweet romance with a bit of extra spice. The intimation is there that both Claire and Zoe play hard, and that both enjoy sex in a very non-vanilla way. And sure, some of the scenes touch on that. But what this story delivers, for me anyway, is the story of two people who were betrayed by the ones they were most intimate with. This story is about finding an unexpected attraction, letting it develop slowly into deeper feelings, and realizing that as exciting as things have the possibility of becoming, perhaps both of them need to take the time to rebuild their faith, in others and in themselves, and to be able to trust once again. The result is a love story that is just as sweet as it is sensual, with a hint of more kink to come. I did have a slight problem with the conflict at the end; the intrusion of Amy into the relationship seemed a bit contrived, and Zoe's reaction a bit over the top. But not so bad that I couldn't see why things may have played out this way. In all, a very entertaining read that will remain on my virtual shelf, not even gathering much virtual dust, as I can definitely see myself rereading it.
This was a romantic story with some mild but tasteful erotic scenes that were beautiful because they were expressions of love shared between two people who truly wanted to please the other. Both main characters had trust issues after bad experiences with ex’s, but allowing trust to develop turned into a very nice slow burn relationship.
One thing I love about reading Donna Jay is the feeling that she’s having fun writing the book. This shows up in her clever witty lines and her inclusion of interesting things to see and visit in New Zealand.
The character Zoe was from Canada, which allowed Jay to throw in some humor revolving around accents. Claire was pronounced Clea with the Kiwi accent, which Zoe had fun with. Another was when they visited Zoe’s family in Calgary, Claire told Zoe’s father that she loved his “deck,” which sounded like dick to the Canadians!
I loved this so much. I'm quite new to F/F erotica and am delighted to find Ms Jay's deft and delicate hand with soft BDSM (and paddles hopefully). This is a wonderful introduction to a world of potential mutual satisfaction written with such clarity and wit. Nice sub-theme too of regaining trust - something many people struggle with. I shall read a book per week of Ms Jay's oeuvre - you have to ration such pleasures.
It's also a sensitive portrayal of the coming together into a new relationship of two complex women. Both were roundly delivered and their partnership felt right and believable. I liked the reintroduction of the former girlfriend a little less satisfying as a device than everything else.
Firstly can I just say that this book is set in New Zealand which is one of my favorite places in the world. I visited NZ for a friends wedding few years back and it opened my eyes to what amazing people the New Zealanders and Maori people are. Can’t wait to get back there this year.
Okay so back to the story that shocked me. I had never heard of Donna Jay and so when I saw some 4 and 5 star reviews for this book by some bloggers that I truly respect I figure why not give it a go. I am so glad I did because I loved it from the moment I started reading it.
Since the cover for this book has been a big topic of conversation I feel like I should put in my two cents. For you that don’t already know that Donna Jay had originally released this book with a rather risqué cover photo (See Below) and when I bought the book it had the original cover. It did lead me to believe that it had some kink and let me tell you the book does have some erotic scenes with some mild BDSM so for that it didn’t really bother me however after finishing the book I think the second cover is a better choice as it depicts a more romantic element and gives a teaser about the beautiful backdrop that is New Zealand instead of being just another erotica novel.
The protagonists of Claire and Zoe where written extremely well. The betrayal both these characters withstood from previous lovers was eye opening and made me understand their dynamic better. I always think that in a relationship trust is a big element to give to your partner but when you add in sexual trust in regards to kink or BDSM it opens up a whole other platform for emotional growth and trust. I enjoyed the friendship between Claire and Zoe even before they began their romantic relationship. When Zoe moves in with Claire they began to highlight each other’s strength almost immediately and embrace the weaknesses they uncover from living together. The impression they give is that they have been living together forever instead it’s only a few weeks. The sex scenes in this book are well thought out and even with the kink it’s extremely sensual, honest and loving.
My favorite moment in the novel would be when Zoe’s past begins to unravel and Claire comforts her through a tough moment of declaration. It made me like Claire even more in that moment, as she can sometimes be very closed off and this scene highlighted her sensitive side.
This book is not without its twist and turns but they road to love for these characters is well worth the journey. I wasn’t quite ready to finish with Claire and Zoe so when the Donna Jay released the Novelette A Special Gift that was released this month (February 2017) I was more than a little excited.
A Special Gift gives you a look into the months that follow Finding Love Down Under and the continued trust that builds in the relationship. I still felt that in Finding Love Down Under that Claire and Zoe could have trusted each other a little more but I am happy to say that with A Special Gift their story was tied up nicely.
I really hope that Donna Jay turns these two books into a series maybe incorporating more characters from the Sex Party or could Zoe have friends visit from Canada? A girl can hope.
I’ll definitely be watching out for what comes next from Donna Jay. 5 Stars.
Reeling from a volatile break-up Claire has no idea what she’s in for when she spies the beautiful brunette alone at the local McDs. Zoe, also recently scorned, can’t believe her luck in the form of a kind stranger and scores a “house-nanny” job in exchange for room & board.
Tucked away among the serene country-side, Zoe and Claire’s friendship blossoms slowly. These two have both had their trust irrevocably betrayed and fate has chosen them to cross paths to learn: life does go on.
The writing of this story was absolutely breath-taking! I could smell the lilac hanging in Zoe’s room and could breathe in Claire’s earthy scent from hang drying her laundry. Not to mention the comfortable description of my absolute fantasy home! I would love to live in a cottage with high beam rafters and exotic wood throughout the place.
And what's more, it was one thing to have a houseguest, and another to be sharing her sanctuary with someone who evoked so many emotions in her. The young woman was as skittish as a newborn foal and brought out every protective instinct in Claire.
Claire and Zoe’s relationship bloomed slowly yet realistically. No insta-love here; each woman fell in love naturally after their initial attraction. Although mostly a romance, there were some super hot spanking scenes that will make any reader blush and I found the circumstances of how each woman came to be scorned very unique. The past betrayals of each of their exes involved taboo instances and were unlike any other plot line I’ve read.
One thing that did stick out to me was I didn't feel Claire was necessarily true to age. Her age in the book was 27 yet I felt she was characterized to be more in her mid 30s. Her dress, mannerisms, and the way she held herself seemed overly mature in my opinion. Overall not a detractor but I did connect with Zoe more than Claire.
I love reading stories like this one that absolutely consume you and are so detailed and well-characterized you almost feel familiar with the setting and characters. Highly recommended for erotica or romance readers alike. xx
*Received an arc in exchange for an honest review*
I loved the first half of this book. The second half was OK. From the opening pages, I dreaded the inevitable plot device used in so very many les fic stories It was a cool and a little jarring to read about places I know and have visited. The kiwi-isms became a little much for me; I kept picturing Claire as much older due to her dialogue. However, the 'deck' debacle fair dinkum made me chuckle. 3.5 stars
A sweet and sexy erotic romance, Finding Love Down Under is a story that soars on the strength of its characters and the sincerity of their relationship. Claire and Zoe are such a wonderful couple - real women with pasts and personalities. They both come into the story with some serious trust issues from their last relationships, and that pain is dealt with honestly and openly. As much as we want them to open their eyes, see what's before them, and dive headlong into love, Donna Jay knows that would be a recipe for disaster.
While the two strangers quickly become fast friends, those trust issues make it difficult for them to admit their feelings for one another, especially when neither is sure the other is even a lesbian. It makes for a slow, sweet tale, but it is one that's a joy to read. Watching these two women get to know one another, come out of their respective shells, and settle into a life together is just wonderful. By the time they are ready to test the waters of love, it is already clear they are meant to be together, and even then they take it slow. Trust issues mean patience and safewords, and both women respect that.
As for those safewords, the story does start out on an exceptionally hot note, with a scene that starts kinky, but which quickly goes dark. In it, we are introduced to Claire and her fiancée, two women who seem to be very much in love, with some kinky ageplay and BDSM tying them together. Claire likes to play mommy to her brat, tying her up, spanking her, and verbally dominating her. Amy has a secret, however, and the only thing more painful than Claire's discovery of that secret is Amy's nonchalant disregard of her concerns, and her refusal to acknowledge the betrayal. While we don't find out her story until later, Zoe's own kinky, BDSM-fueled relationship was torn apart by a similar betrayal of trust, with an arrogant, possessive lover who refused to see acknowledge how deeply she wounded her submissive.
Love of any kind requires trust, but the love between a dominant and her submissive requires absolute trust. It does not come easily, as is tested by interference by past lovers, but that just makes their happily-ever-after that much sweeter. The sex, when it does come, is hot and kinky, but also tasteful and lusciously detailed. By keeping the characters at the forefront, Donna Jay does femdom erotica just as well as she does lesbian romance. Even if you're just bi-curious or an erotic voyeur, you will come out of Finding Love Down Under wanting what Claire and Zoe have.
I’m going to admit a bit of fangirling here. I find Jay’s stories engaging, filled with characters who have flaws but she develops their personalities in such a way they are perfectly balanced. She introduces her humor at times with subtlety and yet you will find yourself laughing aloud or smiling as if you were in on the joke. I never give spoilers, however, the title does let us know that love is to be found in the pages, and with that has to be romance, but perhaps not just your typical romance. And Jay does not disappoint in the least. I love her ability to create characters who do not conform to the narrow confines of our preconceived notions of love and romance. She paints her stories with words that stimulate all of the senses…at least for me. Sights, sounds, smells, and flavors of all kinds were all vivid to me. It was a joy to read Zoe and Claire’s story. Check it out for yourself, I think you will enjoy!
