On a trip to the culinary paradise of France’s Brittany region, Hayden Mundy Moore is all set to reunite with her chocolate-making mentor. The lovable old man is the head of a long-established business that’s about to merge with one of its cacao competitors—united by a marriage between the two rival families. That is, until he’s murdered during a nighttime festival in the picturesque locale . . .

Was it a case of literal corporate backstabbing? Is there some connection to the Paris film crew that’s invaded the victim’s chateau to shoot a music video? It could take forever to find out, considering the relaxed pace of the rural police. But with the unexpected arrival of her financial advisor, Travis, Hayden is determined to investigate, with only occasional breaks for salted butter caramels and Breton buckwheat galettes. It’s time to unwrap a killer—and get to the deep, dark center of a bitter crime . . .

This was the first in this series that I've read since I volunteered to read and review an advance copy of it. I like how the author gets the reader up to speed with Hayden's narrative in the beginning--I had to double check to see if I was in the first book, that's how good of a job she did. I had never read about the two guys in her life, one bodyguard, one financial adviser but I sure felt like I knew them once I'd read only a little bit about them and said by them. Hayden's own background of how she became a wealthy traveling chocolate whisperer was explained briefly but with enough detail that a person can read this book without having read the previous books.

The descriptions of provincial France were detailed and pretty amazing because I could just picture the little street and even the chateau where Hayden and Travis were staying. I've never been to France at all. I've only ever seen pictures or videos online but the descriptions in the book are vivid.

There was definitely a lot of potential killers to choose from and I didn't guess who it was until I had read enough clues which I think the author tossed out there for us to find. The take down was pretty awesome. I wasn't sure about the police detective, Melanie, at first but was glad that she ended up being one of the types that treats the sleuth with respect and actually asks for their help.

It was kind of a complex case in a way, and there was a little side mystery that I had no clue about so that was a fun surprise. Despite Hayden's coming to be with her chocolatier mentor and having to be there while he was murdered, she was able to help out with the crime as well as make a few new friends and learn a thing or two about her previously mysterious voice-only financial adviser. I'm interested in reading the other three in this series now to see just how all this started. Hopefully I can get caught up with the series before the 5th book comes out!

As stated at the beginning, I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book which I received via NetGalley and the publisher.

I have a bit of a problem that all books are written by the same formula. More than a series should be.

In this book Travis came over and Danny was on the phone. Not much has changed there. Even though I must say Travis is a more boring character than Danny. The first half of the book was full of irritating talk between Hayden and Travis and what she is thinking.

The story first seems to be actually interesting but when it came to the chapter where the murderer is being caught I have a feeling that I read it already a few times in previous books. It is not thrilling and surprising anymore when you know what will happen now.

I will read the next book because it is a Christmas story and I will read it during Christmas time but if another book comes out I am not sure I will read it. Reading the same book over and over again just with different settings and names isn't very entertaining.

Chocolate whisperer Hayden Mundy Moore is taking a break from work visiting her parents in France when she learns her mentor, Master Chocolatier Monsieur Philippe Vetault is retiring from his Brittany-based chocolaterie. Hayden can't wait to see Philippe again and work with him. Before she has much of a chance to reunite with his mentor, Hayden spies someone murder Philippe at a nighttime festival. Hayden is outraged that someone would kill such a dear, generous man and that the police release the man Hayden saw after one night in jail. Convinced the police are taking too long to solve the crime, Hayden calls her ex-criminal pal Danny to come as stay in the Vetault family chateau turned B&B with her as she investigates the crime. Danny is unable to make it but Hayden's financial manager arrives to prevent her from getting hurt-again. Hayden is shocked to finally meet Travis in person but frustrated by his attempts to keep her safe. Hayden must endear herself to the village in order to figure out who killed her mentor. What better way to do that than chocolate? She puts her mind to work to catch a killer and craft to-die-for (figuratively) chocolates.

This is the best of the series so far! I loved most of it. The town of Saint-Malo is a charming and perfect location to set a cozy mystery. It has a chateau, naturally, and a village of small boutiques and shops. There's also a French pop star filming a music video to add to the cozy charm. This setting is much more cozy and appealing than the previous novels.

The mystery is also more interesting, involving Philippe's legacy as well as his murder. There were several suspects to choose from but I wasn't exactly surprised by who did it. It was unsure because there didn't seem to be a plausible motive but the killer gave themselves away with a little clue I picked up on. Actually earlier in the book I had realized that was going to be a key piece needed to solve the mystery and I was right. That was a little too obvious for me. I also could have done without the testosterone infused fights over Hayden. Even though Danny isn't in France, he's still in the story. The only other thing that really bothered me about this book is Hayden's poor French. I took French for 5 years in school and while I have forgotten a lot, if I lived there, I would pick it up. One thing I do remember is the difference between Madame and Mademoiselle. Helene, as Philippe's wife, is Madame Vetault and Nathalie, as his daughter is Mademoiselle, until her marriage but even afterwards she is not Madame Vetault. I can see people calling Hayden "Madame" because they don't know her or her marital status but NO ONE in the village would confuse Nathalie for Helene.

Hayden meets an eccentric widow, a drunken gardner, an angry chocolatier, a greedy jam shop owner, an antiques dealer and a snooty soon-to-be son-in-law. Helene, Philippe's wife, is quirky. When Hayden first meets Hélène, Hélène is drinking wine and holding an angry conversation with herself. Helene continues to get drunk and wander the chateau looking for things she's convinced she's lost. It's very sad. Like Hayden, I want to believe her to be a grieving widow but I am not as naive as Hayden. Is she merely a sad drunk or a grieving widow? I also slightly mistrust Nathalie. She seems to have loved her Papa but who on earth wouldn't want to get involved in the family business of CHOCOLATE? Hello! If my father was a chocolatier, I'd be taking over the shop. I expected Nathalie to be different from what she is and am happy she is friendly with Hayden but does she have to marry her father's biggest business rival? I don't like Fabrice Poyet. He's barely there to support Nathalie and a bit too much of a French version of a city slicker to fit in nicely with the village of Saint-Malo.

Hayden also seems a bit naive where Mathieu Camara is concerned. He is also Philippe's protogeé and has heard about Hayden - a LOT- from Philippe. I would be jealous-wouldn't you be? I feel sorry for Mathieu but I don't think he's Hayden's friend, as she does. "Mr. Angry Bloody Hands" as Hayden refers to the murder suspect, is a bit too obvious. His story is rather sad. Another suspect is Clothilde Renouf, the village jam shop owner. She seems to have no sense of the heritage of the village the other village shop owners feel, yet she's quick to pass judgement on others for their business practices. Madame Renouf wants a jam empire. While I understand the need for financial security, her shop seems to be thriving as is. An antiques dealer, Charlotte Moreau is also on Hayden's list of suspects. I don't care much for her but the reader doesn't get to know her very well. There's also an outside chance the chateau maid, Jeanette, could be a killer. She at least knows who is a killer if she is not. Jeanette acts too suspicious to be innocent. What about the brooding French pop star or his entourage? I'm over the brooding pop star phase in my life and would be annoyed at the noise the star and his people make. The policewoman, Mélanie Flamant is a well-rounded character. Hayden suspects Mélanie isn't doing her job correctly but Travis quietly gets to know the woman and find out who she is and what she's up to. I think the reader will be surprised and pleased by her character development. I understand Hayden's hesitation to trust her stems from past experiences and Hayden's limited French. I would probably FEEL as frustrated as Hayden but not actually actively investigate.

Finally we get to meet Travis! After Hayden's jokingly flirtatious comments and attempts to guess details about his life, her dream finally comes true and she's meeting him in person for the first time. She also hates him for showing up when she feels he doesn't need to be there and Danny sows seeds of doubt about Travis's motives for arriving in Saint-Malo. I do not believe Danny for one minute. Travis is too square to be bilking Hayden for her trust fund. The chemistry between them is too obvious for THAT! He really does care for Hayden and I think as more than a friend. He's chivalrous and kind but also a bit nerdy and naive. I think Hayden cares for him too, more than she's willing to admit. She LOVES her work but also longs for stability and a permanent home. Travis represents those things and is also someone who cares for her deeply. I'd like to eventually see them get together. They're opposites yet he's good for her because he supports her rather than trying to curb her impulsiveness. Even though Danny is not in France, he is still a large presence in this novel. He also cares for Hayden, maybe more than she cares for him. Their chemistry is more brother-sister/best friend though because he likes to keep it that way and Hayden can't settle down. I don't see her with Danny anyway. They're a lot alike.

The chocolates sound amazing! Hayden has a knack for making fancy chocolates without being too fancy. I really want one of those expensive chocolate Easter eggs! I will be trying some of the recipes sooner than later.

It took the library 2 years to get this book so I will be requesting the 5th book now and hope they buy it before another two years goes by!

Woe is the book that lands in my reading queue these days. Lately, I'm very sorry to say, I've been feeling about books the way that Seinfeld felt about his girlfriends. If even one thing irritates me, I'm ready to toss it aside.

In the case of Dead and Ganache, I just really didn't care for the lead character's voice. She came across to me as the worst type of millennial - narcissistic and entitled. Who calls themselves a chocolate whisperer anyway?

For as far as I got in the book however, I will say it seems to fit the mold for most successful cozy mysteries, and in that regard at least, I think it will suit many readers. Hence 2 stars vs. 1 star. It just didn't suit me.

Thanks to publisher and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book.

Hayden Mundy Moore has traveled to Frances Brittany region to see her old mentor Monsieur Phillipe Vetalt. She reminisces over her time spent learning her craft in Philippe's La Maison des Petits Bonheurs in Saint-Malo. Philippe is retiring and a grand Au Revoir party. It is at the festivities that Hayden sees him falter and fall in death with a shadowy figure looming over him. Surely its a open and shut case, but just in case Hayden is determined to ensure her old friend's killer is brought to justice.

From the start Dead and Ganache will grab you and hold you captivated. Hayden is quirky but sensible. Someone you might want to get to know better if you met her on the street one day. The story is filled with varied emotions and action. Cozy readers will enjoy the time spent reading this delightful mystery.

My rating of "Dead and Ganache - A Chocolate Whisperer Book 4" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.

Dead and Ganache is a fun cozy mystery with an delightful setting in the French countryside with engaging characters that kept my attention throughout the book. I enjoyed it very much, even though I had not read the previous books in the series.

Hayden Moore is known as the Chocolate Whisperer. She travels the world, helping with chocolate emergencies courtesy of her deceased uncle whose trust stipulates that she must travel or she loses voids the trust. Her trustee is a mysterious man named Travis Turner whom she's never met, but has lots of theories about, especially when discussing the subject with her close friend/bodyguard/ travel companion Danny Jamieson.

Hayden has worked with all kinds of chefs, restaurants and chocolate producers, but this time she's going to France for the retirement party of her mentor Phillipe Vetault. He taught her everything she knows about chocolate and she's his favorite pupil.

The party is timed to coincide with the town of Saint Malo's Fez-Noz, a celebration party held at night. The party is in full swing when Hayden sees Phillipe fall, and she sees a man standing over him. Hayden is devastated at Phillipe's death and is determined to investigate. Unfortunately, Danny isn't with Hayden this time due to an injury. Who murdered Phillipe? Was it his estranged wife? The latest pupil at the chocolate shop? His daughter's fiancee? Hayden is determined to investigate alone when suddenly her mystery trustee Travis shows up in Saint Malo. Together they try to solve Phillipe's murder.

I highly recommend this book. There were plenty of twists and turns and I didn't guess the murderer until close to the end. The writing was well-done and I'll be reading the other books in the series.

Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dead and Ganache is the fourth book in Colette London's Chocolate Whisperer mystery series. This book was an enjoyable, clean read, with an interesting mystery and touches of humor. There are lots of twists and turns and potential suspects to keep the reader engaged. The characters are colorful and entertaining and I was kept guessing “whodunit” until the reveal.

The main character is Hayden Mundy Moore a/k/a the Chocolate Whisperer and in this installment, she travels to Saint-Malo, France for the retirement party of Philippe Vetault, the mentor who led her down the path of chocolate appreciation. His retirement party was to coincide with the seaside town’s Fest-Noz, a Brittany nighttime party celebrated with fireworks, food, music, and dancing. Philippe has a special announcement, but before he has a chance to reveal it, Hayden sees that he has fallen to the ground, with a shadowy figure looming over him. She believes it’s an open and shut case, but Melanie Flamant of the local police refuse to arrest him. Hayden’s best friend/bodyguard, Danny Jamieson, is unable to travel because of a detached retina, but her financial adviser, Travis Turner, whom she’s never met, overcomes his fear of flying and unexpectedly shows up. Hayden, Danny (by phone), and Travis work together to identify the person who murdered Philippe. They uncover affairs, deceit, and no shortage of suspects.

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.

This was a DNF at 30% for me. I had not read the previous 3 books but had no problem picking up the story line because the author spells it all out for the reader...to excess. She also describes the setting...to excess.

Keeping Travis so secretive is a hook and a bit far fetched, but I can see readers liking a bit of romance in their cozies would find this enjoyable especially since pay off by the beginning of book 4 isn't stretching it too far. However, Hayden finally meets him in this book and it falls flat. OMG! If I finally met the man I fantasized about and admit to having a crush on from his voice, I would show much more curiosity and enthusiasm than Hayden. I would have sat down with him and gotten some answers. As I said, I was new to the series and just from what I'd read up to the point they meet in this book I got such a strong impression of how Hayden would react to meeting him and it didn't happen.

So, by 30% I had no interest in the characters, the sleuthing hadn't really gotten started and I just didn't care to continue reading.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

When the Enforcer is out sick, Harvard steps up to the plate

Another great read but wish there was a way that she could have the home, family and dog she craves. A plot of greed, malice, murder and chocolate. There are definitely changes in our main character - she is growing up fast and getting more confident. But which men will she choose or will it be someone unknown to us as yet.
She has travelled to France to visit her mentor and attend his retirement party. Her mentor had not only developed her love for anything chocolate but had provided her with a desire to excel. His murder at the retirement party throws her into a spin. Especially when she finds out that her Enforcer is out on sick leave after an operation. However more shocking is the fact that Harvard suddenly appears. Love affairs, a merger, a wedding, an attack, a valuable antique and another murder. Will it lead to finding the killer? Or are there more secrets to be unearthed?

A traveling cozy! I'd not read the first books in this series but that wasn't a problem because London recapped The Who's who early on. Hayden is in France to visit her mentor but sadly, she sees him fall or be pushed at his chateau in St Malo. Did someone kill Philippe? If so, why? And, more importantly, who? Hayden is undeterred by the fact that she's in a foreign country because she's the recipient of an odd trust that requires her to travel. Her trustee, Travis, turns up (he's interesting) at this site. This is a classic, in some ways (intrepid female amateur, good setting, food) but it's got some twists. Not too complex but pretty entertaining. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Try this one if you're a fan of the genre.

I wasn't drawn into the story by the characters but read it because of the French setting and chocolate. Never having read any of the other books in this series, I will probably go back and read them. The mystery was good and the premise of her having to travel in order to keep receiving her trust funds was a fresh twist. Having missed the previous books I'm pretty sure I missed out on some of the dynamics she has with her trustee and with her traveling companion. Honestly, the thought of traveling the world because of chocolate.....sounds like a nice gig.

I edited the first three books in this series, and it's still one of my favorite cozies. I just love Hayden's voice and all the chocolate (of course!), and Colette does such a wonderful job evoking her ever-changing settings. The provincial French town here is no different. The chateau and shops and even tourists in the market all come alive. The mystery is solid as usual, too. All the clues were there, and I knew they were clues, but I still wasn't able to figure out how they fit together until Hayden did.

I also finally made my first cozy mystery recipe out of this book--a microwaved cake in a mug--and it was just as delicious as the story.

This is the fourth book of the series but can be read as a stand alone. I still felt connected to the characters being this is the first book I read in the series. Going back and reading the rest sounds like a good plan. I laughed hard when she called herself the "chocolate whisper." It is a great introduction to the book and series. This mystery has a LOT of Drama. Wow- can we say soap opera? The story kept my attention had me eager to turn the pages. This "new to me " author is a must read! Recipes included. Can I have some chocolate now?

Better than a Box of Chocolates!

Hayden finds herself immersed in a murder again, this time in France. No spoilers, but she has a very surprising guest helping her this time around. There were quite a few twists & turns before the killer is unmasked. Some very delicious recipes at the end as a bonus.

Why haven't I read more of these? This was such a fun book and I loved Hayden and her problem with her hunky accountant Travis. This say on my TBR for too long, and it was only because I didn't have anything new on my kindle to occupy me that I read it. Definitely disappointed in myself about that! If anything, this review serves as a mental note to make sure I read the rest of the series!

A good cozy. The characters are okay. The story was a bit slow to get through due to the filler with the lead characters thoughts and rehashing of the previous stories in the series.
