Rate this book
All signs point to a suicide and NYPD detective Donnie Beecher is put in charge of the investigation. It's the last assignment he wants. Because of his tragic past, he has no love for the Catholic Church. His marriage is falling apart, his teenage daughter is getting mixed up with the bad crowd.

But soon clues start piling up. What if the Pope was assassinated?

In Vatican City, young and idealistic Father O'Dwyer is beginning to wonder the same thing. Why are the cardinals around him so secretive? Why do they keep whispering about the mysterious San Marino letter?

With his superiors breathing down his neck for a swift resolution, Beecher teams up with Officer Emma Aldridge, a former nun. Failure means not just an end to his career but a shift of power in international relations which could lead to war. Together, they will need to find out what really happened to the Pope.

I am not much of a fan of legal dramas, but this one was fairly decent. It could have been better if it had better characterization and consistency, but I enjoyed reading about the mystery surrounding the Pope death. I also felt that there were too many loopholes with the story, first you are reading about the dysfunction the main character has with his family, but then you are annoyed cause the story never continues to unfold or answer questions that were left hanging in the air.

Oh well,it could have been better but it reminded me of late Grisham, not exactly a good thing.

These books start of good but then it gets lost in the whole law jargon language.

Interesting idea. Bad dialogue and cheap predictable villains.

Quite a ride

With characters you'll become attached to and others you'll wish would drop off the face of the earth, I really enjoyed this book. More that one involved plot...and all are well written. This was my first read by this author but it will definitely not be my last.

This was a fairly undemanding and quick read. There are several threads running through the story relating to the death of the Pope and the personal and family life of the investigating officer. It is always interesting to read about the machinations in the Vatican whether real or fictional. The author has concocted a good storyline here.

Enjoyed the plot!

Interesting characters in a not too fast paced story so you could relate to them and follow the plot. I would like more stories with Emma, Donnie, and the new pope (a hippie priest briefly introduced). Effective use of political and religious intrigue with a new twist definitely kept my interest. Thrown into the mix are drug dealers, teenage rebellion and cheating spouses - all without detracting from the main plot.

The Pope's Suicide

Richer introduces Detective Danny Beecher and former nun, now an officer with NYPD, Alma who are tasked with investigating the apparent suicide of the current Pope, who was found hanging in his bathroom in the New York life's residence. Danny, is pushed from the Catholic church officials and his own police and political higher ups to rule the matter a suicide, but Danny and Alma are convinced this is a murder, pure and outright. This path proves dangerous to both of them before the guilty parties are brought to justice and Alma is shot by the suspect, while Danny is barely able to save his wife and daughter, by to mention his marriage. If you like playing detective, you won't want to miss this one. Thanks for another great read.

Interesting

Strange story a Pope's suicide/homicide. I enjoyed the twists and turns. The interconnecting stories the Pope's death and Beecher's other drug related case. As a practising Catholic l did find some of the book a bit disturbing but love when the end comes to a recognition of "faith" which can be something deferent for many people. The realisation of how important Beecher's family is to him and how he has allowed his police career nearly destroy his family is a wonderful underlying theme. Definitely going to read more of Steve Richter's books

Intriguing story

This book was unlike any other that I have ever read. Bringing the Catholic church, drugs, and murder into the storyline was a major endeavor but beautiful researched. I gave it 4 stars for the pure reason of awful grammar, which disappointed me. A writer should never depend on spell check for the simple reason that even if the words are spelled correctly it doesn't mean they are used correctly.

Only 38% in, and already over half a dozen grammatical errors. Very little character development, no one I cared enough about to invest in - emotionally or otherwise. I'd say I lost interest, but you can't lose something you never really had. I rarely ever give up on a book, but I'm washing my hands of this one.

good story but too preachy

I really enjoyed the basic story line of this book - it was interesting and had lots of good twists to it. But I’m not a religious person and could have done without all the “faith” stuff. I will try another of Mr. Richler’s books, but if they are similar, then I won’t read him again.

Exciting

This book was outstanding and the characters were believable. I would love to think that scandals involving the church don't happen but that would be unrealistic. Good job Mr. Richer!

Good book

I really enjoyed this book. It is very well written and I loved the fact that I could put it down and when I returned to it I had no trouble getting right back to the story.

Slow start

This book had a very slow start as the plot developed, but what a good book!! I highly recommend. Great story with the church, great conspiracy, and nice side story regarding the detective’s daughter which actually tied into the main theme. Overall good read.

This is a story about events before and after the Pope is found hanging naked in his bathroom while visiting NYC.
There is a sub plot involving the Lead detective and his family.
this story kept my attention all through the book. I really liked this author.

Suspenseful

This weather is good and the books are suspenseful but the proofreading ? Not so good. I'm sure it's not their fault that I used to do statistical proofreading but I just wish whoever published this had better proofreading available.

Great murder mystery

Steve does an exceptional job of interweaving subplots within the main story. Very entertaining way of incorporating the fictionalized information regarding the church involvement.

Love mysteries and this book was very interesting with the politics of the Catholic church. Intriguing ideas and I found the double plots worked well. Will read other books by Steve Richer.

Finally finished! The main character’s daughter turned out to be decent after all! And as far as the suspect - it didn’t surprise me. I thought it was one of two, and he was one of them.

Interesting

I try to read lots of Vatican storyline novels. I take no offense (usually). This is no exception. It tells a good story even if it does shed some poor light on some cardinals. All in all it is a fun look at the Church without being judgemental. Thanjs
