Sleeping around. Boozing. Fighting with teammates.
Name a bad behavior and he’s done it—done it so well, in fact, that he almost tanked his career as a starting defensemen for the NHL’s San Francisco Gold.
But Mike is done with all that. He’s starting with a fresh foot forward and putting his past behind him.
That is, until his past quite literally reappears before his eyes.
Sara Jetty is just as beautiful as she was a decade before, but Mike hasn’t seen her since she left for her first Olympics and scored a gold medal in women’s figure skating. Now something has put shadows in her eyes, a familiar type of hurt he is all too well versed in.
This Sara wants nothing to do with him. Their easy friendship is gone and in its place is a hardened woman who’s nothing like the girl from his past.
Still, Mike hasn’t become a top defensemen in the NHL by being afraid of hard work, and he isn’t about to let Sara push him away. Come hell or high water, he’s going to crack her tough outer shell and find the sweet, innocent woman he’s lusted after and loved, in equal measure, for more than ten years.

TW: abuse
I wish (do I really?) I could say I loved this book, or that I at least liked it but I'm sad to say that this book was miss for me.
Between the over-bearing alpha hero who showed too many abusive tendencies and the flighty, Mary Sue heroine, I was bored (and kind of disturbed) to tears. I'm surprised I even finished it.
I didn't think it was romantic, I tought the hero (whose name I can't even remember) was possessive and sexist plus, in one scene, he actually grabs the heroine (who's name I also can't remember) and physically shakes her so hard she hurts her head. Like, what the hell. That is in no way shape or form, romantic.
The lack of respect and consent was also insulting. These two are literally the basics of a healthy relationship. I couldn't stand the stupid fights and the toxic dynamic between the two characters. The smut wasn't even good, what a waste.
I have higher expectations of Romance novels lately since I've read some pretty amazing ones these last few months. This one just didn't do it for me, sorry.
4 " solidly enjoyable" stars. I am a little bit of a sucker for second chance story's and sports romances so it was very easy for me to enjoy this book which combined both. I have to also admit that it was mostly the "HOT" book cover that initially led me to request a copy of this ARC from netgalley but I am so glad that I did as I really loved the plot of this story and the way it was executed by this author. It starts off with a chance encounter between Mike and Sara which rekindles a previously lost friendship and much more. It was a well balanced read with plenty of plot twists and mysteries that kept me entertained and held my interest right up until the very end. I was also emotionally moved by Sara and Mike's characters, their back stories and their present day circumstances. It was a well told story and an overall very goodread. Backhand is the 2nd book in the Gold Hockey series by this author and my first by Elise Faber but definitely not my last.
Mike Stewart is a former bad boy of the NFL and he has just been reunited with his childhood friend/crush, Sara Jetty. Only she's not as happy to see him in fact the first night they run into each other she practically runs away from him. The second time he pretty much has to kidnap her to get her in his car. Finally, he finds out her disgraced past. Not her fault. She was accused of cheating and kicked out of figure skating even though she made it all the way to the Olympics. She was disowned by her family and friends and now lives the life of a recluse. But Mike isn't giving up until he's back in her life. She definitely makes him work for it and when she finally lets him in, it's nothing but sweet and sexy. This couple get to re-know one another and learn to love and trust. Even after the press gets ahold of their story, they hold strong. It helps that the entire team has their backs and so do the wives and girlfriends. I loved Mike and Sarahs journey. I was surprised when the whole tale behind Sarah's tragedy came out and who was behind it but in the end she gets her HEA with Mike so in the end it was all worth it.
Backhand (Gold Hockey, #2) by Elise Faber Elise Faber scores with BACKHAND, the second book in the Gold Hockey series. NHL defenseman Mike Stewart is reunited with his childhood friend, disgraced Olympic figure skater, Sara Jetty. She tries to push him away, but he is persistent is perusing a relationship with her. This contemporary sports romance takes place in San Francisco. It is suitable for new adult and adult audiences.
Sara is an interesting heroine. She is a former Olympic gold figure skating medalist. Her reputation is tarnished. She can no longer participate in figure skating. Luckily, she also has a passion for art and can pursue a career in that direction. Unfortunately, her confidence has been shattered. She undergoes a great deal. I’m glad she had Mitch as a boss. He’s good for her.
Mike is a good guy. After gaining a bad-boy reputation, he decides to straighten out. He is noble, persistent, protective, and a good friend to Sara. I appreciate that he remembered so much about Sara and did thoughtful things for her. I love that Mike and Sara grew up together in Minnesota. I like their nick names for each other. My heart broke that they both had disappointing families.
Elise Faber does a great job with the plot. I like how Mike and Sara run into each other at the beginning of the story. There are a lot of interesting things that happen that kept me engaged. There are a lot of mystery and twists. BACKHAND was skillfully written and entertaining. The ending was thrilling, and the epilogue made the story feel complete. I’m looking forward to the next story in the Gold Hockey series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This book was NOT what I expected. Sports romance mixed with suspense it was so good and the results was not what I expected. It's one of those books that you have to finish completely to get the results because it doesn't give anything away.
Mike & Sara grew up together but drifted apart when she was an Olympian figure skater and him with his hockey. Ten years later they run into each other again. This time Mike is an NHL superstar and Sara a disgraced figure skater who is now an artist. Mike didn't care about all of that, he cared about the girl that he always had feelings for which clearly were still there.
After much trouble, Sara gave in and they started dating. She was reserved because of her past and Mike was trying for her not to think of her past. Little by little she started living and didn't worry much about her past.
Mike also had his shares of demons which eventually will comeback and try to mess things up between him and Sara. That's when some interesting events start occurring and that has you wondering what will happen next.
Things get cleared but it was one rocky road for this couple but they came out on top. Loved Mike's friends and Sara's boss. They were other people clearly not in the picture that kept me wondering about them but I'm not going to spoil it.
I received a copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
This was an alright read. I requested this book a long time ago, but never got around to reading it. The story follows Mike Stewart and Sara Jetty as they become friends again, and then fall in love. I did enjoy the story, but I did find some parts a bit boring. The characters were the best part of the book. Mike Stewart is a hockey player and a bad boy. He and Sara were friends before she went to the Olympics for figure skating. He is more than just a bad boy, he is a sweet guy. I liked the fact that he thinks Sara is his one and only love. Sara Jetty was a figure skater but now is a painter. She has been through a lot since the Olympics and she is feisty. I love her. I want a friend just like her. The ending did seem a bit rushed, but I am glad that I read this book. Overall, an okay read.
Two things I love and adore in books... #1 Sports Romance (especially hockey) and #2 a good second chance/friends to lovers troupe (ok that might be three). Anyhow, Backhand has everything I love and more in it and I couldn't put the book down once I picked it up.
Mike Stewart has been known as the bad boy of the SF Gold Hockey team. But he's turning a new leaf and trying to be a better example to those rookies coming in and trying to be a little more level headed when it comes to the decisions in his life. He didn't have the perfect childhood but he did have someone that he's never forgotten about... Sara Jetty. So when he runs into her in the middle of the night in San Francisco, he's more than a little surprised to see the once Olympic hopeful, full of fear and wanting nothing to do with him.
Mike is determined to find out what happened to he once spitfire of a sprite who was destined for so much more than the quite artist he found, ten years later.
Sara can't believe that Mike is here. But just like everyone else in her life, he left and walked away from her, leaving her a lone and no one to fight for her when she needed it the most. So why was he all of a sudden interested in her again?
Mike and Sara are magnetic and full of fire for each other. Both have demons of the past that neither of them knew about, only remembering the them of their youth. Now Mike must prove to Sara that he never forgot. But can Sara survive the limelight of Mike's success without bringing him down with her?
This book is a interconnected standalone, so is not need to read the other books in the series but you'll be missing out on some great reads! I highly recommend this book and series.
Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. This is a story about friends long lost friends who reunite and become something more. Sara is a disgraced Olympian skater, she lost all her friends and even her family, when allegations had come out that she paid the judges in the Olympics. She starts over, or is at least attempting to, when she runs into Mike, her long ago crush, and she does not to have anything to do with him, because is too painful, but Mike wont give up, he also harbored feelings for Sara and never admitted. They cannot fight the attraction they have always had, and admit to it, and decide that they have waited long enough to give themselves a chance, unfortunately do to Sara's infamous reputation, treacherous people come out of the woodwork to cause trouble, and make their lives a living hell. It gets a little heartbreaking, reading what Sara had went thru, and what she was accused of, and who did it. Sara gets attacked, and the truth comes out, and it blows everyone's mind, and she becomes, famous instead of infamous, and we get our HEA..Enjoy!!!
Great second chance romance! I like seeing the history between the two characters become the sounding point for starting again. Mike and Sara seem to really care for each other. The author was able to bring to light the frenzy around popular athletes and the media.
My first read from this author but I was impressed with the writing.

Backhand is a story that will lay some surprises on you. It’s an intense story that quickly moves in an unexpected direction. I’m not a big Sports Romance reader, in truth the only ones I read are usually NASCAR related – hey, I love fast cars. I tend to want to watch the sport rather than read about it, if that makes sense. Yet this one got me at the blurb and I’m very glad that I went with my instincts on this one.
Mike has lived the high life as a top hockey player. He’s done the major bad boy routine but that soon grew old. Now he’s more into cleaning up his past life in his sport, and being someone the up and coming rookies can cone to for help and friendship. He’s no saint, but he’s not as bad as the news stories would have you believe. When he runs into his childhood friend and crush, Sara, he’s more than a bit surprised at the woman she is now. Gone is the spitfire, confident young woman he loved as a teen but could never express that emotion to her. In her place is a broken, wounded woman who barely acknowledges what they once had, at least the friendship part. Mike is determined to not lose her again and he’ll push his way into her life once again.
Sara has known the deepest pain, betrayal and humiliation possible. Once her dreams of bringing home Olympic Gold were all that kept her going. With that dream shattered, and her reputation in tatters she’s lucky that she had another talent to fall back on when her world imploded. Her art may not bring in the cheering crowds, but it is her passion and her talent today. The very last person she expected to run into was Mike. He’s grown into quite a famous man with his hockey career… and he’s just as stubborn as she remembers. But Sara trusts no one now, and she’d much rather Mike let her slip into the shadows once again. But it doesn’t look like that is going to happen any time soon. Can she be brave enough to grab hold of what this man she’s always been attracted to is offering… can she dare to believe and trust once more? Tough questions with difficult answers.
While Backhand is a second chance romance, it also has strong touches of suspense. The kind that takes a story you think you understand and adds those twists and unexpected turns that change absolutely everything. Mike and Sara’s story was so much more than I expected it to be – and I was delighted with the results. Mentioning any of those twists and turns would involve major spoilers, so I’ll simply say that if you’re a reader who enjoys the unexpected in a story – then Backhand would be perfect for you.
I would definitely recommend this story along with the others in the Gold Hockey series. There is always more than we know to every person’s life story and Backhand brings that fact alive loud and clearly. A solid romance, an even more in depth suspenseful story, this one I would recommend to any Sports Romance or Romantic Suspense readers You don’t have to have read the earlier story to enjoy this one, but it also should be on your radar.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
This is book 2 of the Gold Hockey series, which upon starting this book I did not realize. However, it didn't take me too long to get caught up with the backstory and figure out all the characters. So essentially it could be read as a stand alone if you wanted to.
I will say it was an okay read with an interesting twist at the end. But there was something about it that seemed a bit off. I'm not sure what it was about this book, but it did take me a long time to get into and actually finish it, a little over two months actually. I think at fist it was because I had a hard time connecting to the characters, but then the story line itself seemed a bit confusing to me. I didn't fully understand Sara's situation much at all and it felt like her and Mike were sort of thrown back into each others lives in a way that didn't feel natural to me.
Overall, it was an okay read.

Sara Jetty once had a career she loved but after cruel allegations she not only lost the thing she loved the most but an attack left her near death. Now years later she focuses on her art and the outside world passes her by until a man from her past appears .
Mike Stewart has had his troubles in the past and only recently has he put them behind to focus on his hockey career. When he stumbles upon a woman from his past he aims to never lose her again.
Despite attention on them from all directions they fall into familiar rhythm.
Their relationship is tested by threat from a familiar but slightly unexpected foe.
With the past set to rights the future is theirs for the taking.
The hockey player and the Olympic skater knew each other as teens, but life intervened . They just didn’t know how badly or how close the intervention was. He became a star; she had hers stolen from her.🏒⛸
Elise did a great job at capturing my attention with this book. I will be honest and say I didn't read book 1 and I was skeptical about reading book 2, this was a good standalone.
I don't know much (or anything other than ice, skates, and some gear) about Hockey. Reading this book did put me in the moment with these characters, and Elise did a great job for my rookie skills. I didn't have to ask a ton of questions to get the idea of the description during play time for Mike.
Sara has had a rough go at life the last few years, and she is skittish with everyone she is around. Rightfully so, as it turns out. She has found out that not everyone is your friend and there are some people who wont hesitate to literally push you out of the way for their own gain. Trying to make a new life for herself by doing something that will keep her out of the media spotlight.
Mike is the small town hero Hockey king. He has fought his way to the top, nothing was easy for him to get to where he is. Just a lot of hard work and determination. He is enjoying his life as a bachelor until one day he notices a girl. A girl he used to know many years ago.
I enjoyed the push and pull of the dynamics of this book. There was something about the way this book was put together that had me engrossed, anticipating what was going on. There is somethings in this book that I had to stop and think about what the heck just happened. I can say with certainty that I didn't not see what happened coming! Should I have? Maybe, but I didn't! And I was glad. This is a well written story. I am just going to have to go back and read book 1 now!
Nice second chance romance between two childhood friends. Add in the world of hockey and figure skating and it was a really good story. It went a half star because I just don't understand how if everybody knows who she is and what happened, how did he not know? It was still an enjoyable book though.
***ARC received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Absolute sucker for the cover. Seriously nothing wrong with that. Two super sweet MCs that were sexy and likable. Probably my only complaint that went from 4 to 3.5 stars is how quickly they got back together after 10 years apart with no communication and how did he not know about what happened to her?
While I liked this book I was also slightly confused. There were some things that made me go "huh?" and caused me to go back and re-read to make sure I understood what was happening.
That's when I lost it a little because it just didn't make sense to me.
I want to preface this review by saying that this book was not necessarily bad, but it you are looking for mature adults and a really fleshed out story, then you might wanna skip this story and continue the search.
Mike and Sara were not inherently awful, but they certainly do not know how to handle their emotions when it comes to one another and the events that have transpired in their lives. We are given a background for both of them, but this background is very minimal in its description. We are told that Sara has lost her friends and her family due to the allegations made against her, and that is it. We are given this seemingly important detail for no reason. It's just there. There is no closure regarding it, nor are there any scenes where we see in detail or are even given a description for what really happened between her and the people around her.
The same thing happens with Mike. We are told about his awful mother, and the reasoning for why he and Sara separated when they were younger, but it felt incomplete. We are given a storyline, and it's very quick and small and that is it. There is no true detail given to it and thinking back on it now, if you asked me to describe what happened in their, part of me says I can give a description, but it feels incomplete.
Finally, I think the biggest issue I had with this story, was the lack of a resolution. We have these horrible events that have happened to Sara and the ending does not address all of it. In fact, the ending only addresses one person in the mix of people who has hurt Sara. One person. That is it. We don't see any apologies, we see no remorse, we get no scenes with her parents, her old friends, her ex, anyone! We get nothing but a so-called happily ever after that did not really feel happy. I was left unsatisfied and just thinking WTF, what is this?
All in all, this is not a bad book. I have certainly read worse. However, this book definitely needs improvement in terms of creating more detail for facts that are added to the story, or it needs to eliminate facts that are not even addressed later on in the story. Furthermore, it needs a good ending that helps to tie everything up, or an ending that at least acknowledges more than what it did. We have an epilogue for six months later and in those six months, I would think that people would have reached out to Sara and Mike, but the author just ditched that realism entirely and aimed for a quick HEA that did not land. Read it if you want, it was free when I got it, but at the same time, you are not missing out if you skip over this one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
DNF at 21%. The premise of Backhand by Elise Faber seemed a really great combination of the hockey player super star and the ex Olympic medalist darling figure skater with a tarnished reputation findinglove and acceptance through turmoil and hard times to obtain their HEA. And honestly some of the story was really good and interesting, but it started to fall flat pretty quickly after that and I found myself skipping chapters and generally lost interest in Sara and (I forget his name) as a couple. I guess I wanted more depth to his character then I got at that point. It was well written at least and I've not lost hope in this author yet. I appreciated the opportunity to read the book and Thank Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Backhand by Elise Faber Book #2: Gold Hockey Series Source: Netgalley My Rating: 4/5 stars My Review:
Mike Stewart has been around hockey his whole life. Of late, he’s developed quite a nasty reputation for his on-ice antics, especially during practice, and his excessive drinking. His teammates really can’t stand him, but he’s such a good player, management won’t let him go. If he doesn’t get it together, he won’t have a friend left in the world . . . . or, at least none from his present life.
Sara Jetty has had a super-crappy life over the last decade or so. What started out as such a promising career as a figure skater, quickly turned to shame, ridicule, and banishment from the sport she dearly loved following a scandal Sara had nothing to do with. Unfortunately, perception is everything and with a lot of falsified “proof” Sara was convicted in the court of public opinion which led the figure skating powers that be to banish her from the sport. The conviction and banishment tore Sara’s world apart and she has spent years trying to put the past behind her and move forward. That is, until Mike Stewart quite unexpectedly walked back into her life.
As a teenager and young adult, Sara was everything to Mike and he adored spending every morning in the car with her on the way to practice. Sara was kind and compassionate and understood, better than most, Mike’s determination to make something of himself in the sport he loves. The two bonded over ice time and injuries, and their unwillingness to compromise their dreams. Both were driven and determined, but that all fall apart for Sara just as Mike’s dream was becoming a reality. While he tried to reach out to her, Sara refused to engage and simply disappeared from Mike’s life. With his unexpected discovery of her in San Francisco, Mike is more determined than ever to find out what really happened to Sara all those years ago, right the wrongs of the past, and make Sara a permanent fixture in his life once again.
With Sara back in his life, Mike is more resolved than ever to behave himself and that attitude is coming through loud and clear with his teammates. With his professional life getting back on track, it’s time to focus on Sara and the slaying of her demons. Sara is beyond hesitant to become involved with Mike because she knows he’s going to push her past her comfort zone and force her to face her past, deal with it, and truly move forward with her life. She has talent beyond the ice rink and if Mike can just build her confidence, he firmly believes they can have an amazing life together. The biggest hurdle is going to be getting all the dirty details out in the open and dealing with whatever fallout, both personally and socially there may be.
The Bottom Line: Backhand definitely doesn’t suffer from the old sophomore and it is a much smoother and more enjoyable read than book one, Blocked! Mike is carry over from book one and he is so much more likeable in round two than he was in round one! He was really quite detestable in Blocked 😊 His sensitivity toward Sara and his true and pure desire to not only help her, but be a better man is so endearing. Mike knows Sara hasn’t really been living her life for the past decadeish, and he wants to see her heal and live the life she deserves. For Sara, having Mike back in her life is a double-edged sword; he wants what’s best for her, but he’s also going to make her relive some truly painful things before it will all get better. It’s so going to be worth it! With their shared history, Mike and Sara’s story really is a combination of a past meets present and second chance at love read and I was all up it from start to finish. Bring on round three, Elisa Faber!! I’m ready for some more San Francisco Gold!!!
Elise Faber delivers another great story in her “Gold Hockey” series, this is the second book and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Each book features a different player but characters from earlier books make appearances. This book is Mike Stewart’s story, he is a defenseman for NHL’s San Fransisco Gold. He is first introduced in the first book and I must admit he first came off as a major jerk, thankfully he redeems himself later on in that book. He was having personal issues and had a lot going on and we learn more about it in this book. Sara Jetty, a medaled figure skater and the person who Mike Stewart was once good friends with, they fell out of touch, he went on to play hockey and she went off to train and compete in the Olympics. Fate brings them back together, one day Mike stumbled upon her while she sketching her drawings. She tried blowing him off, not wanting any part of her past in her life, she had her reasons why. But Mike does not give up easily or on her. The two connect again, learn what has been going on, Mike was surprised to learn what he did. I loved how everything plays out in this book, it is cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some angst, twists and turns, heartfelt moments and a hot romance. It was great to catch up with some of the characters from the first book, also great to see how well the team is doing and the great camaraderie they built amongst themselves. Yay, WTG SF Gold! Elise Faber, thank you for another fantastic story.
I listened to the Audible edition, Lacy Laurel and Gregory Salinas are talented narrators and voice artists. They continue to bring these characters to life giving each their own voice and personality. Their portrayal of the characters is spot on, they sound as you picture them to sound. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fabulous listen🎧

Disappointed! First of all, this is supposed to be a HOCKEY romance. So, more hockey should be included. It's really just a "rom-dram". I liked the story and kept reading, assuming the author would flesh out the story more, but NO! The wrap up is completely unsatisfying. This story just left so much unresolved and unexplained. The heroine is a coward from beginning to end. She's supposed to have been this gold medal winning competitor, but she folds at every instance. I don't many competitive athletes that just give up. Definitely needed less gratuitous sex, and more back story. I'm all for the sexy scenes, but so many were forced in for no reason when the author should have been giving us a clue into the hero's past and how the heroine came to her current profession. She's just suddenly this fabulous artist who spent her entire previous life practicing to be a world class figure skater? Some extremely evil people never pay for their transgressions. I don't believe there is a statute of limitation on attempted murder! Our cowardly heroine won't even think about prosecuting anyone. The supposedly gifted publicist who finds out what happened to her, doesn't even try to convince her. Obviously, if she found out, others would too. There's no keeping secrets like hers once the trail has been lit. There is no back story regarding Sarah's family or why she was driven to practice by Mike. It's mentioned that Mike drives her family's car to get them to practice, but no reason why. All we keep hearing is how her family deserted here and didn't stand by her. No back story! And finally, the only person who believed in her throughout (Mitch her boss) isn't even invited to the wedding. Two stars for what should have been a 4 star read. I felt like the first in the series wrapped up rather abruptly, but it seems like the author was just lazy on this one. I'll try one more in the series, but if it's as disappointing as this one, I'm done. Still recommending Toni Aleo, Sawyer Bennet and Jami Davenport if you want true hockey romances.
The second book in the hockey series and I must say I think I liked this one better than the first one. Mike Stewart the resident bad boy has been slowly turning over a new leaf at least with his own team and actually being a teammate. Now as things are going good with the team he finds someone from his past, Sara Jetty. She is a former figure skater and was on her way to the Olympics until a scandal derailed her. Now ten years later Mike just happens to see her one day and follows her to an art studio where she works. Working his way back into her life like a body check into the boards he wants to know what happen for back then growing up together they spent a lot of time together until she left for Nationals and then his life went crazy with his mom being arrested then he left for hockey camp. The more she becomes back into his life she is finding that she is being healed from the past as well. They each have a story that intertwines their childhoods and Sara finds out things about Mike that she did not know because after everything in her life she walled herself off or tried to from the world. Mike wants her back in his life and the way he explains his feelings to her takes you back to him being a teenage boy driving them both to the ice arena for her ice skating, and his hockey practice, but still a young boy trying tell a girl that he loves her. Of course he is still nervous but does it. Even after when something happens she still must tell him not to feel guilty and work past his fear of running from her for what happened to her. This is a wonderful story not just about hockey but about life and how it gets so out of control sometimes. The characters in this book are all very good. A good read. I got this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
Sara Jetty was once a champion figure skater, until the scandal that ripped apart her entire career and in the process everyone she had thought loved and supported her. After successfully rebuilding her life and finding contentment in her art, she is not prepared for a blast from the past to show up...
Mike Stewart is at the top of his game in his professional hockey career. When her runs into his old childhood friend, Sara. He realizes how much he really missed her... then he learns what she had to go through alone, and he decides he isn't ever letting her go again...
When the media descends and Sara is thrust back into the spotlight, will it all be too much for them to handle, or does their relationship have what it takes to survive?
This was a fun read! I loved Sara and Mike's adorable shared past. What was innocent young love, that neither of them had fully realized, turns into an instant connection now that they're adults.
I feel so bad for Sara, and all that she has gone through. She is an admirable character, simply from how she continues to be strong and whole after so many people in her life have just plain wronged her. Mike is adorable and sexy, and once he finds Sara again does everything he can to repair the relationship they once had and prove to her that he will never let her down again.
The storyline is set around a professional hockey team, with some well written supporting characters who are old and new friends alike... most of which like to impart Mike with much needed relationship advice.
With a fast paced plot, and a scandal that you have to just hope will be cleared, this book keeps you engrossed and entertained throughout.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review!
Mike Stewart, is introduced to us in Blocked, Stefan and Brit’s story. When we first meet him, he is rude, disrespectful, sabotaging, and doesn’t seem to care about anything or anyone, even if it means ruining his own career as a a great NHL defenseman. By the end of Blocked we want to know his back story.
In this second installment of the Gold Hockey series, we learn that Sara Jetty, former Olympic figure skater is his back story. They’ve let 10 years pass with no contact due to horribly unfortunate circumstances in both of their lives. As they re-enter each other’s lives, getting together as a couple happens pretty quickly. At first this was confusing because, well, they let 10 years go with no contact at all!!! As more and more of their story is revealed it makes sense and makes you root for them.
Elise Faber does a great job of writing the story to keep you reading because this is not a book where you can guess what happened in their past, or the drama that will come. You HAVE to keep reading to get it. She draws you in to both characters and makes you want to protect them. She has you rooting for them all the way. After all who doesn’t appreciate a reformed bad boy who is a true romantic at heart, or a true underdog who is so defeated it's hard to bring them back out of hiding?
Can’t wait to see who’s story comes next… Will it be Blane – who has been in love with Brit most of his life and is still coming to terms with her love for Stefan. Who will help him get over her….?
Backhand is all you can want in a second chance sports romance. Elise Faber's second book in the Gold Hockey series, we are given Mike and Sara. We had met Mike in book 1, the bad boy, but in this story, we are seeing his transformation. We do like it when the men find their way and mature. Sara is an Olympic ice skater accused of cheating. Whether or not guilty or innocent, this has tarnished her career and she can no longer skate. Luckily she has other talents as well. Mike and Sara were friends when they were younger, and this translates through to their new budding relationship. I love when there is some history, it really adds a layer to the characters. These two do have some chemistry, but I did find it hard at times to feel it. Mike is very likeable, tries really hard and I found it easy to fall for him. My frustration was with Sara, as her character is a little colder. OK, so a lot colder, more reserved, hesitant. But with that being said, I think that is what made the story so good. Relationships aren't easy, and I struggled right along with these two as they tried to find their way. The ending is what caught me though. That layer of suspense, the thrills always get me and my heart beat, and Elise definitely was making mine go. It's a great listen, we get to engage with other characters we know and we grow right along with the team.
The narration is what really brings it all to life for me, and this team is amazing.Lacy Laurel and Gregory Salinas have their own chemistry and it comes right through their narration. They have similar styles and I find listening to them exciting and fun. I can't wait to grab book 3 and keep going with this series!
I was thankfully selected to review Backhand. Oh MY GOD! I loved this book. From the very beginning I was sucked in and I really didnt want to stop reading but unfortunately life got in the way or I would have finished in one day. Thank you Elise for this honor to read and review this book! I just brought Blocked so I'm about to get on that.
Sara I loved that girl. I thought she was going to do the whole push and pull thing with Mike but she didnt. Even if Mike didnt really give her a choice. I was really disappointed that Sara didnt fight the allegations but when I found out how young she was and that she didnt have anyone in her corner that believed her. That absolutely frustrated me that people that just met her knew that she was innocent but her own family abandoned her.
Okay.... Mike I really feel in love with you! He didnt take "no" for an answer. When he wanted something nothing stood in his was. He was a little alpha but a whole lot of charming. It was like no time had past with him and Sara. This just picked up where they left all but with little bit of scars. His teammates stuck together even when things got tough they had Sara back.
Now what I didnt like (sad face). I felt like it was missing something. I wish we had got more of both of there parents. I just needed to understand why Sara parents did what they did. I wanted more about Mikes father. I just wanted more. Maybe I'm being a little greedy but I cant help it.
Sara Jetty and Mike Stewart were buds in high school. Two years older, he would drive her to the ice rink where she practice figure skating and he hockey. They haven't seen each other since she left for her first Olympics and scored a gold medal in women’s figure skating, while he went on to the NHL. They lost touch, not knowing the tzorus that the other was going through, until they meet again, ten years later. Mike never forgot her and wants to reconnect, but she has become a shell of her former self. She was falsely accused of cheating and was not only banned by the Olympics but shunned by her family and friends and even assaulted and left for dead by a former boy friend and his cousin. Meanwhile, he was dealing with a mother who had become addicted to her husband's medication. Sara has quietly reinvented herself as an artist and Mike is not willing to let her go again. I loved the story, but do not understand why her loving family (it was her mother's car that he used to drive them to the rink and he spend a lot of time at her house because his family was dysfunctional) would abandon her. This should have been explored more.
This is book two in the series, Mike and Sara’s story. This was better than the first book for me. In book one we learned that Mike was quite an ass through most of it. This story explains why and let’s us fall in love with him. He is romantic, sexy and has a past that he would like to forget, except the part with Sara.
Sara grew up with Mike on the ice. She was a figure skater and became an Olympian. She had some horrible things happen to her and she and Mike grew apart. Now she ran into him and he won’t let her go again.
This book developed their relationship, although quickly. They both had damaging pasts to get over and I loved how is was written because they were there for each other. It was romantic, suspenseful and heartwarming at times.
Although standalone, I would recommend reading the first book to keep the characters straight. They appeared often in this book. Again my only complaint is the epilogue. This author gives us a preview of the next book under that title and I always want more of the main characters story. That to me is what an epilogue should be. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
