This is the first book by Kim Frauli that I have read so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a well written post-apocalyptic suspense thriller. This should not be read as a standalone as it ends in a cliffhanger. Unfortunately as I write this the next book has not yet been published. I was impressed at how well written this book is for a first novel.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all info here. The author did a good job of explaining what is going on and describing the history and settings of the story. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. As usual all things and people are not as they seem. I can't wait to read the next book once it's released.
Terrific read that could so easily be our own reality. Terror attacks have left behind a new order that classifies people into Warriors, Workers or Scholars. She has been a Scholar for years and has become very good friends with her coworker. However things are changing, a request for them to work on a "bomb" ( to curb unrest) and the news that she is paired to become breeding partners with the ruler's nephew plus her unsettling dreams lead the pair into trying to escape the Compound that they are in. Can they escape and if they do what will they find on the outside? Why can't she remember her father except for ghostly keep references to a device that has to be kept out of the ruling regimes hands? A brilliantly plotted book that will kept you engrossed especially as it could so very easily be part of our own lives. The characters are as real as you or I with the same desires and emotions. A recommended read. I received a copy for a honest review
This was a dystopian book that was not very suspenseful or exciting with a mystery that ended up being rather predictable. However, I adored this book for the lovably innocent characters, their strong friendship, and their journey into a new world.
Julianna and Declan are the brightest scholars in the compound that has been their home most of their lives, closed off from the real world. Bright enough to eventually realize that the government that they were always lead to believe was gracious and generous may actually be more of a dictatorship. Eventually they decide to escape their closed environment and become fugitives in the real world.
Their grand getaway and subsequent travels were not nearly as gripping as I had expected, but I hardly noticed as I was consumed by the wonder, excitement, and happiness the characters were feeling. I felt the communication of emotion was done well by the author, and her treatment of family was heartwarming. To be honest, most of the time I had forgotten the story involved fugitives from a dictatorial regime entirely, but I found that to be a welcome change of pace and I look forward to book 2.
I definitely would classify this book as a "cozy dystopia". If you are looking for a dystopian novel with shocking twists and turns, heart pounding danger, and nerve wracking road blocks, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are looking for something a bit more on the brighter side and find pleasure in the joy and happiness of characters, this book is definitely worth reading.
A dystopian adventure for Mensa fans. Finely written from the point of view of two genius co-workers. Finding a lot of what they thought to be true is not, the escape only to find they are hunted by the menace they had grown to hate.
When a malign plot to seize power causes an apocalypse of terror, that kills millions, orphans Julianna and Declan are among other outstandingly clever YAs herded to work on top secret projects in the Scholar's Compound, instigated by Guardian Costma's New Regime . Kim Frauli's first book in the When No-one Was Looking Series gets things off to a shocking start and the horror keeps coming, when the new project Declan and Julianna are told to work on is not for medical application for the greater good, but a weapon of mass destruction to deter any thoughts of rebellion among those disillusioned by the current dictatorship. When the two friends make a break for freedom, they take a secret device with them, hoping to prevent its misuse. They seek their families while trying to find out why Julianna can barely remember her father...could it be that something has been done to cloud her memory? Why else was Julianna desperate to escape? Soon the New Regime troops will be in hot pursuit and the imperative will be to survive themselves and raise a rebel force to oust the evil Guardian Costma. Can they possibly succeed? Will good overcome evil or is the world as they know it gone forever? Summary:
Received for an honest review.
This book began long after the terrorist attacks that left their almost destroyed until Guardian Costma, the leader of the New Regime, took control setting order form chaos. The new government quickly tested all the children taking the smartest to the Scholars compound to use their intelligence for the betterment of the people, at least that is what they were told. Children like Julianna and Declan were hidden away from the outside world so they would have no distractions in their work, but it was Julianna's brilliance that led her to begin questioning the rules when they were told to create something that would kill anyone threatening their way of life. Being kept hidden away, no freedom, forced to follow orders without question, and eventually to have a mate chosen for you is no life at all. Add to that Julianna's strange dreams that left her unsettled questioning everything she used to accept. The only thing keeping her grounded was Declan and even their friendship could be severed if anyone thought their feelings for one another were anything except platonic. This story was a wild ride form the very beginning and it is just the beginning of what looks to be an incredible series.
Thank you Kim Frauli for this free copy. ••••• When No One Was Looking is a Dystopian mystery novel aimed at young adults. The main characters are about twenty years old and brilliant. Although the premise is realistic enough to make it plausible, like most Dystopian novels, it's a bit unrealistic in how it plays out. It is entertaining nevertheless. The main characters, Julianna and Declan, are well developed and likeable. There is an integrity and wholesomeness about them that I like.
Slow start, but I soon felt compelled to keep reading. After terrorist attacks, all the children were tested in school. They were, against the parents' will, then taken from their families and sent to Scholars or Warriors camp. If they did not qualify for these camps, they were allowed to become workers and remain in their homes. Julianna and Declan were torn from their families and sent to Scholars camp. They were not allowed any contact with the outside world, they were simply trained, then put to work as researchers.
CLEAN, NO BAD LANGUAGE, NO S... This is the first book in the Project Mnemosyne series.
WOW! I was sucked in to the mystery and suspense from the very beginning.
Julianna and her best friend Declan are brilliant Scholars for the New Regime. When asked to develop a biological weapon, they decide that it is the last straw and escape the Compound.
The Guardian is desperately trying to get them back, especially Julianna.
Julianna is dealing with loss of memories regarding her father. She has a fantastic memory regarding everything else. She is getting little bits in dreams, but nothing definite.
After their escape, Julianna and Declan go to his mother first and then her sister. At her sister's house, Julianna discovers that her father tried to wipe her memories about him to protect her and the world from what he was trying to develop. His backer, one Gary Adams, wants the technology to rule the world. He even orchestrated the "terror attacks" to gain power over Julianna's country. Gary Adams is the Guardian.
When is the next book coming out?!?!?

After the terrorist attacks, the smartest of the smartest of the orphaned children were taken to the Scholars Compound where they were assigned projects to work on. They were told it was for the betterment of everyone. Juliana and Declan were working together and Juliana became suspicious as they were being isolated. She knew things weren't quite right. This Dystopian novels, is entertaining but a bit unrealistic. It's well written with likable characters. I received an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review it.
I received a copy of this book and I gladly leave my review. This is the first ever book I’ve read of Kim Frauli’s and I must say I really enjoyed it. This book is set in the post-apocalyptic days, it has suspense and u don’t know who to trust. It’s about an orphan named Julia and her best friend Declan, it’s about all of the trials and tribulations that they go through. This book ends in a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next one.
I absolutely LOVED this story. I read this straight through. Terrorists hit and bad government comes to town. Smart children taken from their families in order to serve government whims. Deep Friendships.. Deep Dislikes.. This is a wonderful journey of 2 highly intelligent children who become friends who turn into 2 highly intelligent barely adult people standing up for what they believe in.
This is a must read! I was gifted an ARC for an honest review. (Book read 11-26-17)
Great Read slow start, getting over the few humps and confusion of why children where taking from their families to work on prototype for the world at a young age. Really enjoyed this book from chapter 5 to the end now I must know how Kim Frauli is going to conquer the world with two former scholars and refuges.
A refreshing read without crude language. An adventure story about a boy and girl who are taken from their families by a new government regime where they are put to work developing new medical breakthroughs until they are task with one that they will not do. They escape into a world they hardly know anymore in search of their families. Will their strong friendship develop into more?
Another youth dystopian novel. Not as good as the hunger Games, but i found it kept my interest and was easy to read. This story had much about personal relationships, but also had a cause worth fighting for. So many good people who believed in helping each other and also very evil people who only cared about being rich and in control, and causing chaos to achieve it.
A frightening look at a world in which children are removed from their families and locked in scholars' compound, programmed as workers or warriors. Removal of freedom and democracy completes the grim future. Declan and Juliana pursue freedom and love as they flee their scholars' prison.
My first read from author Kim Frauli. The book started slowly in order to build the data base/storyline necessary for the rest of the series, but by the end of the book you can’t wait to read the next book. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
I reread this book in preparation of reading the other two in the series. This is a good YA book. I can recommend for Jr. High and Sr. High. I am rating it as a YA book. Some adults may not enjoy the fact that it is geared for younger readers. I give it four stars.
A relaxing page turner that keeps your interest to the end. Looking forward to continuing the series. Will be a great starting point to pique the interest of individuals who think reading is boring.
I was quite interested in this story of young children tested as young children and then divided into Scholars. Warriors or Workers. We get to see what two special children grow into and eventually why this pair is so special. There is also a special aim the New Regime really is and what they are actually planning..
