The Sign of the Cross... In the darkest parts of Russia.
Boris is following the trail to locate the last of the NVG's secret bases. As they look, they run across an old legend, one which speaks to the Archangel Michael defeating a beast...
Could that have actually have been Michael, the Patriarch of Vampires?
And if it was, what beast had he condemned to the caves near Archangelsk, Russia?
This time, Boris is going after more than just the NVG - he is searching for the answer to his own past.
NOW - REVELATIONS WILL OCCUR!

I was born on Remembrance day, I was early. My mother wanted me to be born at 11, but the doctors delivered me at 9:30. I’m contrary like that. My childhood was shaped by a bout of meningitis, that was diagnosed by my grandmother over the phone. She was one of her generation's few female doctors. The effects of which, including loss of fine motor control, would shape the rest of my life. Proving you can still be a writer with bad handwriting, but not bad enough for me to follow in her footsteps and become a doctor.
I may not be a surgeon now, but I still like sharp things. Swords are my thing, and I studied Iaijutsu, and a plethora of other martial arts, with and without blades. Not in the serial killer kind of way, but more of a curious enthusiast. Also the blunted weapons, gotta have a bit of a thump. Tie that in with 15 years of medieval reenactment (and no I don’t mean ren-fair) and studying history and psychology at uni. I’ve got a lot of knowledge built around weaponry, tactics and military history.
I spent some time in cadets, and a lot more around soldiers and ex-soldiers. I learnt how to shoot, gun safety, camping, how to march, how to navigate with a map and compass (forget that GPS stuff) and other basic military skills, like how to make a verse in a marching tune about each individual in the unit. Hopefully some of that comes across in the realism I put into the more military oriented books.
I’m always working on several fictional worlds simultaneously, including a collaboration with Michael Anderle. Some of my works have been published, maybe more by the time you’re reading this, while hundreds more pages are lying orphaned in my incomplete folders. So, I’m generally working on three books (at least) at any one time. One day they’ll all be out there for you to read. In the meantime I’m living in a regional town in Australia, with a day's drive to the nearest capital city.
Right now I live at home with my partner of eight years, and between novels I’m a full time carer. I’m completing my bachelors degree with a major is philosophy, and right now I’m applying that learning to the deep question of whether a self-published author can survive on more than cat food. This is a terribly important question, as I have two beagles to feed. I am wary of bumps in the house due to my partner’s severe epilepsy. The nurse beagles assist me in keeping an ear out enthusiastically… oh so enthusiastically… in this.
Boris and Janna continue to bring peace to their region of Russia. The ancient creature they found is an incredible allies and chooses to go with Bethany Anne into space. Boris and his group set up a town and wait. All defences are in place and they are going to continue in Bethany Anne's absence and continue to help where needed on earth.
It's an awe inspiring series. People coming together to work as one to the same future. This started before TBQ left for space and continues after they leave. Werebears are so big and cuddly, I so want one. Preferably without her ripping limbs off. Enjoy!
What I thought was going to be a short book before rejoining Bethany Anne and her space adventures turned out to be 226 pages. But they were very good with expanding on how Boris and his group are growing, learning about the new Kutherian entity with lots of action and great characters.
I am still way behind with my book reviews so here is another three in one review. This time for the first three books in The Boris Chronicles, another side-story in the Kurtherian universe.
To me these books are a fun, straightforward read. It takes a couple of characters at the time just before The Queen Bitch herself leaves Earth in The Kurtherian Gambit and spins a story around them. It is a simple story and a fairly fast read but it does add a few more details to the Kurtherian universe.
I did feel that the writing in these books was closer to the writing in the original series than, for instance, the books by Martha R. Carr. I like Michael Anderle’s writing so for me this is a good thing.
As usual with books in this universe it all centers around a few very likable and very kick-ass characters. In this case the main protagonist is of course Boris, a very likable werebear. The bad guys are made up of elements of the Russian government who are even more criminal, corrupt and despicable than the average Russian politician. And, just for good measure, the author also throws in a few old-fashioned vampires to round of the bad-guy menagerie.
The Queen Bitch herself is actually part of the story. She and her closest ass-kickers are involved in a fair part of the story which, to me, is another plus.
There are also a few twists, discoveries and revelations, including the introduction of another character that is, well, let’s just say that she is not entirely human and comes with a history to avoid any spoilers here. I guess these twists may or may not have an influence on future books in the Kurtherian universe, whether they are side stories or not, depending on where Michael wants to go.
If you liked any of the previous books in the Kurtherian universe then you will probably like these ones as well. It is a nice well paced roller coaster ride with plenty of wise-ass comments, action and ass-kicking. Oh, and of course some language not suited for the easily offended.
I didn’t care for this book. It was boring. With all of the military and guerrilla warfare, you’d expect it to be the opposite. It was more of a bad action adventure book, and maybe because it focused so highly on the graphic displays of violence and not the story is what turned me off. Hearing how Gyada stuck her partially changed arm through an enemy and then sat there in shock after because of the violence. Not really surprising. It was all a bit too much and not enough at the same time.
Too much of the military-esque fighting with so many different groups, I couldn’t keep them straight. Maybe if you have an interest in Russian history, you can follow it, but without that knowledge, I couldn’t make sense of why one group was attacking the other sometimes. The not enough came from having a non-fulfilling story. There are bits and pieces all over but so much didn’t tie together for me. The author I think tried to give his characters reasonings for doing things, but most of their comments were surface only, no depth.
There were too many competing story lines as well. You can see how they are somewhat shaped together, but because none got enough development, they all fall flat. I think I would have preferred that this book just focused on the new AI (or Entity locked in a computer) and not have had all the fighting to contend with while they figured her out. Instead we only get bits and bobs about her and how she came to be. We find out CILO is a mad Kutherian but it would have been more interesting to hear the full story, not the tidbits that were shared. It almost just came across, this guy was a loon and he did horrible things, such as lock up the AI entity and how he practiced his enhancements on Gyada. But you don’t really get the full impact of just what all he did, could have done or the lasting repercussions.
I really liked the Boris character from the main series. Sadly these books aren’t doing him justice. He’s two-dimensional at best and an anachronistic throwback to an earlier time, with no substance. Gyada who had no interactions with the rest of humanity for decades if not centuries, and was from an even earlier time came across better as a character. That Gyada wasn’t a complete ‘bat-shit’ crazy, as they said CILO was is rather unbelievable. She could only communicate with the AI while being locked into her beast form. Even if it could somehow make it so Gyada doesn’t realize the passage of time, when she finally came out of the fugue she was in, seeing how changed the world had become should have been overwhelming and enough for her to lose it mentally.
The entire Sacred Clan concept is also a joke. In the main series, BA fought the Sacred Clan and utterly destroyed it’s compound and many of its people. So once these few escape, they immediately come after Boris and his group to get their tech by using this teleport feature of something they have. Of course, in the main series, you are led to believe that Stephanie Lee and the Clan we’re mostly destroyed and few remain. Where do all the fighters come from in this book then. That so many of them were also shapeshifters, seems unlikely, when in the main, barely anything is even known of this Were offshoot. Wolves and the rare Bear shifter is talked about, but Cats weren’t except when the Clan was finally brought in. They’ve had centuries to grow, develop and give birth to their own race of Weres. If they were so large of a group, wouldn’t the wolves, Nathan and the various packs already know of them to a larger degree.
It seemed more that the author needed a bad guy villain group and this was the easier way to create one. Though not a realistic one.
I’ll probably read the fourth book, but only because I tend to read entire series if they exist, once I’ve started one. Even if after the initial enjoyment of the first book or two fades and I’m left with blah with the remaining series. This book definitely rates in the blah-zone.
In this story, Boris is searching for a base that is the subject of myths and legends - but, when he eventually finds it, not only is it a huge surprise, but what it contains makes it a prize for China's Special Clans, Russia's NVG, and even a few of Russia's leaders decide to privately go for the prize.
But what they didn't count on, was the obstinacy of Boris, the Ghost Bear, his partner, Jenna, and a new ally who has reasons of her own for protecting the area.
When the combined forces seem to be about to overwhelm them, this team of special people do their best to keep the prize that they have uncovered safe.
This story was really involved, with lots of descriptions in the battles between the allies of Bethany Anne, and those who want to steal any tech secrets they can.
I found the descriptions fascinating, and the insight it gave me, as to what a battle is really like, was amazing.
I'm really loving this side stream to the Kurtherian Gambit!
This upsets me. I liked the story and Boris, too. But I kept running into everything from missing words to wrong words, and the most aggravating was full sentences to entire paragraphs that made no sense! I would read the paragraph, then again, and I'd even go back a page and read again to see if I missed something. If this happens once, no big deal. Unfortunately, this book was good story and action, but a field of land mines filled with annoying errors that should have been caught. A few other things I caught, like they're in Russia yet when giving details regarding a distance it was given in miles, not using the metric system as it should. These little things add up, and for the first time I wasn't smiling when I finished, but was simply hoping that the next book was back to the usual standards. ✋🐺
This book, oh this book. It’s interesting to see people starting to plan for a life post-BA, but here it is. It’s interesting to me as well, that most people don’t hesitate to call the cavalry (BA and the QBs), but Boris is like “no, it’s fine, I’ve got this”. And I realize that part of this is due to the politics of the situation, but it’s still fascinating to see the difference in mentality.
I am looooooving the “Beast”, what a character they turned out to be! And check out that character development on Paul, not such a goofball after all!
Again, an interesting aside from the main crew, but still too heavy on the military side for me. I can't keep up with it, nor really keep the battles straight in my head. I know war is messy, but this was just sentence after sentence of words that made no sense. I mean, the words did, but not the way they were strung together. I'm kinda glad I don't have the knowledge to make heads nor tails of it. Means I haven't lived it, and for that, I'm grateful.
I enjoyed the book. It filled in the backstory of at least one of the characters of the main story arch. It also expanded upon what another story arch mentioned. I noticed some spelling issues, and I don’t remember any mention of one of the characters in the main story arch.
These books just keep getting better and better! I love how the storyline is going and how all of the personalities have grown and become more interesting. He's made them come alive and made me care what is happening with them. I can't wait for the next book!
I'm going back to The Kurtherian Gambit before reading #4 here as I think I've missed something. I love the new character introduced, though think her development was a little fast due to the constraints of the length of the novel. BUT... Having said that it is another excellent book in the series.
She is such an awesome person! And Lilith is sassy, strong and a great foil for more stories. The only thing wrong I see is that there is a US flag patch on the uniform on the covers of this book and Retaliation. They're Russian not American! Or more precise, they are part of the Queen Bitch's Army!
These off shot books are really enjoyable and in formative on the various characters. I find this author is really great at fully developing the characters and making them believable and people I would love to meet.
You will love this book! The characters and closeness with TKG really bring it home for me. It all lines up well with what has been and what will be written in the universe BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Not quite as engaging as the first two books but a fair read. I found it a bit hard to follow. The reveal about Gyada was interesting and I imagine we might hear more about her.
I don't think I've put down one book in any of the series. I loose myself in the action and, the human emotion that is in each book. Love the characters, and find myself looking forward to each of the next books.
Russian politics, Chinese intrigue, alien technology plus shifters of various types populate this novel. Boris' refugees are looking for a new home. New characters are introduced with colorful histories.
I started reading the fourth book but it's now eighty years later and no explanation of what happened to Lilith. Book four has been disappointing so far. I have read almost all of the Kurtherian Gambit books and I have enjoyed them all.
I really identify with Gyada. She went through so much and became more than she ever expected she could. Being an Army brat, I understand the protective feelings for those you feel responsible for. It made her seem more human.
Boris is making new friends and beating up enemies. I am excited to see how the two new friends fit in the group going forward. Some great battle tactic scenes and some interesting history!
To Paul, your individual style is blending in, and enhancing the KGS. I have been, and hopefully will continue to be Thoroughly Entranced with your Super Series.
Wanted to like however it wasn't up to spec. Started slow and just ground along, a couple of pages of action then back to the grind. I'll pass on the next one.
Great addition to the kurtherian universe. I really like the Boris character and now withone of hi ancestors being revealed and alive. Love the book even more 😁
