Tenderenda fantasta
Kaleidoskopický román, jejž lze považovat za Ballovo skryté umělecké krédo, vznikal v letech 1914–1920, knižně však poprvé vyšel až roku 1967. Magicko-anarchický svět plný bezbřehého absurdního humoru je odrazem zoufalství a iracionality situace, v níž se společenství imigrujících umělců v neutrálním Švýcarsku během první světové války ocitlo. Román je zároveň i poetickým ztvárněním geneze dosud nejradikálnějšího uměleckého směru – dadaismu, a svou až karnevalovou satirou vůči dobovým monstrům také protichůdcem teoreticko-reflexivního tónu Ballových pamětí.

Guten tag.
Hugo Míč, bratr Hugo Bose, byl zakladatel kopačáků pro střední a východní magistálu. Když ale neměl do čeho kopnout, psal knížky, protože měl tužku a papír, což bylo ještě do 70. let minulýho století dost vzácné zboží, stejně jako třeba internet nebo koblihy plněné vepřovým mozkem.
Nejčastěji psal při úplňku vedle krbu, kam jej vozil trakač vyrobený z oslí kůže a očí kober. Tam taky napsal Tenderenda fantasta, což je knížka, která vypadá jako záznam toho, co se děje v mozku Sagvana Tofiho, když jde v sedm ráno domů z pařby. Doporučuji číst jednu větu za týden, pak kniha dává smysl. Já jsem ji přečetl za den a moc jsem toho nepochopil. Psal se prosinec a já byl dokonce střízlivý, protože to vyžadovaly konvence. Seděl jsem na gauči a prděl jsem. Nic nepomohlo. Je to zmatek a doteď mám průvan v hlavě.
A tak hodnotím 4 bludišťáky z pěti, protože čemu já nerozumím musí být logicky chytřejší než já.

Hugo Ball, geb. 1886 in Pirmasens, war während des Ersten Weltkrieges Mitbegründer der Dada-Bewegung in Zürich (Cabaret Voltaire), überzeugter Pazifist und scharfer Zeitkritiker. Der enge Freund Hermann Hesses war dessen erster Biograph. Hugo Ball starb 1927 in Montagnola/Schweiz.

Mit beiden Händen laut flatternd, erhob er sich, flog wie zum Versuch ein gutes Stück Wegs in den Abend, neigte dann aber die Kurve und kam, unter einigem Hüpfen, leichthin wieder zu Stand.
Der Pöbel, der bis zu den Hüften allseits des Markts aus den Fenstern hing, war erschrocken, schüttelte aber, da ihn das Schauspiel befremdete, ungläubigen Mißbehagens den Kopf, schwenkte aus Leibeskräften die Salztrompeten und mitgebrachten Papierlaternen und schrie: »Das Vergrößerungsglas! Das Vergrößerungsglas!«

HHmmm... When I found this new in a Half-Price Books in Dallas for something like a dollar it struck me as a great find. Why was it so cheap?! Usually such cheapness seems to translate into something like: 'unsaleability due to complexity &/or obscurity &/or intelligence'. SO, is that the case here? Dunno. For me, the selling point is that the bk centers around a lengthy text by Hugo Ball, well-known dadaist. I've never heard of the co-creator of this particular bk: Jonathan Hammer.
IF the bk had simply been a translation of Ball's original, it wd've gotten a 4 star rating, IF the bk had included as Hammer's only contribution his excellent essay at the end, it might've gotten a 5 star rating. The essay is fascinating & esoteric & scholarly & rich. ALAS, it also includes Hammer's illustrations wch I.. well, one might say, DETEST. That's really too strong but, despite the illustrations' purportedly transgressive nature, I found them bland & trite to an extreme. B/c of them, I almost gave this bk a 3 star rating.. - but, no, the essay's too damned good.

El nacimiento del dadaísmo. Lolo-Lolo, la quintaesencia de lo fantástico, trae el mundo a un tal Fetus, en lo más alto de esta esfera que, rodeada de música, de baile, de locura y familiaridad divina, zanja con suficiente claridad con su contrario.
Ningún discurso de los señores Clemenceau y Lloyd, ningún disparo de carabina de Ludendorff ha suscitado tanta emoción como el desigual grupúsculo de profetas dadaístas errantes, que anunciaron a su manera la infantil inocencia.

Ball’s writing is brilliant and hugely funny and suitably weird; it’s just the rest of it that’s a bit poor. The introduction is the worst kind of academic babble and the translator/ artist’s work and essay really add nothing to it of worth. The art is fine but just feels weird sat next to the text, the final essay not quite as egregious as the first but still pretty weary and unengaging
