This was soooo bad. The style is so juvenile it is pathetic, I had a feeling I was reading something written by a 10 year old pretending to be a grown up writer. The idea is not original, though it perhaps even could have worked if it wasn't for that writing style. The style hurts to read, it's ridiculous. Not even funny. This is the second book by this author that I read--after the first one, which was also super bad, I decided to give them another chance as some reviews seemed good, but now I wonder if those are all author's family and friends--and I have to say I am forever done with this author. What a waste of time. I can't even.

Review disappeared again

The first part was so confusing and random I was totally unsure where it was going. But I continued on and I am glad I did. This reminded me a little of nightmare on elm street. People are dying in their dreams. Some of them are at least. One boy disappears in the swamps and comes up dead. His girlfriend is found wandering in the swamps many miles away two days later, and she is speaking an ancient Indian language. There are so many secrets in this town. Evil people surround her, and their is that darn Umbrella Man appearing nightly in everyone's dreams! Then their nightmares start killing them. A determined journalist, haunted teenager and a little girl band together to reveal the evil in their town and send the umbrella man straight back to he!!. Then when you think its safe to go back to sleep, there is a cliffhanger! Oh joy! I hate those and there are so many unanswered questions so I have to read it. Thank goodness its on KU and available now. I guess I'm going back to sleep.

3-3.5 ⭐️

This was my first book by Willow Rose.
It’s the first book in a trilogy. I’m not sure I’ll ever read the other two. I might because there were some unanswered events, and it was an interesting story.

The chapters, and there many, time-hop and simultaneously bounce from character to character, which was confusing at first.

It seems like once the times merge, the book loses momentum. It’s more like I was just reading about this stuff instead of being pulled into the story.

I felt a bit like I was on Elm Street at some points. The Umbrella Man doesn’t have the fear factor of Freddy Krueger, but he works for the same company.

I’ll give this more thought before deciding on reading the next book.

Setting: 'Bushlake', Florida, USA; 2016 & 1997.

In 2016, Stephanie Boulder returns to her hometown 15 years after she last left to care for her terminally-ill grandmother - and walks right into a sequence of strange dream-induced acts of violence and deaths. These current events seem to be linked to a young woman in 1997 trying to raise her intelligent but excessively violent son....
This Willow Rose novel was straight out of the horror genre - and was totally gripping! Great characters and storylines made for an excellent read, which I thought was concluded but it appears that there is a second book that I am keen to follow up on - 8.5/10.

Ok Read

It is a supernatural thriller, with strange murders happening in a small town called bushlake. I found the story all over the place. Almost all the denzins of society are phsycos and sometimes things are too farfetched.. like author had to make something like this, so even if the things are making different turn in the story they are just pushed backwards forcefully. For example, Barbara, I found is the biggest idiot. She knew her son wasn't right in head but she never seemed help, and even accepts his word to kick John out. It didn't sit right with me as the story was going but, author did exactly that in 2 lines, saying her love for the mentally unstable and violent kid, zero because how could the kids lie ! Even though she had proof he had lied earlier. It a bad story, but I had my hopes very high seeing all the other reviews.

Amazing tale

Stephanie Boulder has just come back to town to take care of her grandmother. When a young boy is found dead and the whole town is devastated, she decides to start digging in the town history and trying to find the murderer.
When dreams start to make people die then there is a chance she is next. Learning about dreams and nightmares helps to get a handle on things but the ending is hard to believe.
Another great book by an Ajax by author of mystery and suspense.

'Umbrella Man' pulled me in from the start. The story line was incredibly thrilling, suspenseful and full of creativity. The characters were a great cast of personalities. Stephanie is a great lead. I liked her tenacity when it came to finding out what was going on and not giving up. Anna is one heck of a young lady. She is stronger than most adults. I can't wait to read more. A great add to your tbr list.

This book was my first written by Willow Rose. Although the story was interesting, the writing style took away from the story line. It jumped around so much it was difficult to identify the characters each time. The book almost seemed to have two stories written in one. The first story about a maniac killer who visited people in their dreams known as the "umbrella man." The other story was about some characters living in alternate worlds from what they knew to be normal.

The book was interesting enough but I didn't care for the ending. At times I found the story line to be a tad too far from normal to really be a good read. This book had so much potential with the idea of someone killing people while they dreamed, but left me wanting more.

"Supernatural Thriller To Knock Your Socks Off"

This is another screaming, spine tingling thriller by Willow Rose, also known as The Queen of Scream! The body of a teenage boy, Julian Long, is found in the Green Swamps of Florida. He was well liked in Bushlake and life in the town will never the the same. Stephanie Boulder, after 15 years, has returned to her town to care for her grandmother. She's a writer for the local paper and digs deep into the story of Julian Long. The more secrets she learns, the more her life becomes endangered. Her life turns into nightmares of The Umbrella Man. Highly recommend, you'll be impressed and want to read all books by Willow Rose.

Gubba

Well this is a good one, another of Willie's great novels. A strange set of events take place in a small town devouring the residents of this small community. A town with hundreds of years of history. Both good and bad, really bad. It will throw you for a loop, have you so engrossed you won't want to sleep tonight. But, fear is a what we fear the most; isn't it?. Are you afraid? Don't be, maybe its only be a dream!

Different and very busy

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. Weird, different and a bit confusing to follow all of the characters. Very busy. It wasn't bad, but didn't leave me anticipating the next book in the series.

Normally I just don't finish and review books I dislike but I finished this for a couple of challenges. It might have been a quick read maybe 3 stars but by the end even 2 stars seems generous. First off Willow Rose is the ‘queen of scream.’ I don’t know if she’s self appointed royalty or if some review somewhere said it. If the blurbs and bio are to be believed she’s the author of bestselling books (and could well be for all I know). What I do know that based on this I wouldn’t be looking for more. I do have one or two others of hers on my reader so I might try them but only because they’re already there.

This is set in small town Florida and told in multiple points of view, some third person and some first, including Stephanie Boulder who has returned to the town after fifteen years to take care of her terminally ill grandmother (she eventually becomes the main pov character), a blind Seminole girl and her father, and it’s nonlinear for the first half at least so we have the point of view of the mother of a strange boy who talks to the ghosts at the hanging tree from the time of the Civil War and beyond where apparently a lot of African Americans were hugn.

Stephanie starts digging into the death of Julian Long, star of the local high school and some of other high schoolers. What she begins to suspect that it might be supernatural and that the young woman accused of killing him did not? Many of the kids, and later Stephanie and the blind girl and her father (also accused of murder) are seeing the titular umbrella man in their dreams but dreams can’t kill you, right?

And you can see right there part of the reason my review plummeted. Willow Rose’s author notes said she got the idea from a recurrent dream of her daughter’s where the girl kept seeing a scary man with an umbrella. Okay that could be cool. But by the end of this thing it’s literally a plot stolen from a Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors right down to going in to the dreams to stop the Umbrella Man from reaching into their dreams and killing them. Are you telling me the Queen of Screams has never seen this movie? I’m talking close enough I’m surprised someone didn’t sue.

Even if I could look past that, and I probably could have, we then have characters with the emotional depth of a mud puddle. From here on out consider things to be minor spoilery. For example, someone Stephanie cares about turns out to be a horrible person and then is killed and it’s like oh well, I guess he was bad and he’s almost never thought of again. How realistic is that?

And it gets worse, then the bad guy, who has been in this thing from day one (along with his mom), we finally get the big reveal about him (so spoilers here) he’s African American. I’m not kidding, that’s treated as a big reveal. I’m like was that supposed to tie him into the ghosts of the hanging tree (which is supposedly prompting him to be as murderous as he is)? Racist overtones aside, it added absolutely jack to this because that link was never made. And then he’s an albino (which could have been interesting had it been a thread thru the book instead of slapped into the end) but his mother didn’t know sunlight was bad for him and that’s how he ended up so badly burned at age 18. Um…a mother with an albino child in Florida didn’t know sunlight could burn him and he’s eighteen years old, not eighteen months? Is she completely stupid? I’m the one who feels dumb for reading this and wasting time reviewing it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Umbrella Man - a review by Rosemary Kenny

When teenager Julian Long's body is found in the Green Swamp region of the hitherto quiet town of Bushlake, Florida, panic spreads like wildfire among the residents. Guilty secrets are hidden, to be gradually revealed more than 15 years later, by journalist turned sleuth Stephanie Boulder, a returned resident who's come home to tend to her ailing grandmother. Fascinated by the cold case and suspecting there may be a serial killer, (the eponymous Umbrella Man) at large again, Stephanie risks her safety and possibly her life to uncover the truth once and for all, before more victims are added to the tally.

What is the connection between the killer and the residents, who are dying after having identical nightmares? What is Stephanie's uncle's job in town?
Who is Gubba? What happens to Anna? Does Hannah ever return to normal after Julian's death? Who is the blind girl who can interpret what she says?

I admired Stephanie's bravery in investigating what really happened in the Swamp, despite the risks to herself, but I thought some of the many other characters were superfluous and lengthened the book unnecessarily (490 pages), making the storyline hard to follow at times.
The overall premise of the plot was fairly standard and I think it would make a good script for a murder-mystery or thriller film, or tv series. Book 2 is Blackbird Fly, which will hopefully continue to explain the truncated ending of Umbrella Man. Why not buy both and decide for yourself?

This story is a bit far-fetched. It's also a bit confusing at the beginning, and you do have to suspend your beliefs whilst reading, but I still enjoyed this book. My favourite character was journalist Stephanie Boulder's grandmother. Although she is dying from cancer, she still likes a bottle of beer. The timeline bounces back and forth, and it's the same with the characters, you need to check who it is that's speaking. Then everything comes together and we are left with a cliffhanger. So I'm off to read Blackbird fly, the follow on book.

The first page suggested that it was written for young adult readers. I found that it was not necessarily for young adults, but real adults. I’ve gone through chapter 25 and have seen the phrase “lost it” at least 15 times. Nearly every character in the book seem so “gasp” every time something happens.

The book could have been a good story had the poor writing been more descriptive and non-repetitive. The old “show don’t tell” thing. The prose did not flow well, and the sentence structure did not lend itself to the characters’ actions. Too many short and repetitive sentences to relay traumatic and emotional scenes.

The book could probably have been written in one-fourth of the pages. If it were, I might have finished it. Those readers who gave it 4 and 5 stars must have no taste in literature or good writing.

The writing was good with a pace that kept me involved. There were quite a few characters with various levels of development, but the main characters were well-fleshed out. I'm not sure if the book is listed under the YA genre but it seems to be a good fit. I would have loved to see the author dig much more deeply into the alternate reality angle and maybe she will in subsequent sequels, but this one seemed to only touch on it as well as lucid dreaming. The connection to Nightmare on Elm Street was strong and a bit distracting as I kept thinking back to the movie while I read the book scene by scene toward the end. The inclusion of gay and race issues seemed a bit forced, but fit into the YA style.

I see this as a descent thriller with some very likeable characters and nice twists thrown in. It was very reminiscent of a Nightmare on Elm Street story, specifically Part 3. I like the overall concept of people being murdered in their dreams by a demented killer, however for me this particular killer didn't instill any amount of fear into me while I read.

Some plot points are very interesting and i really liked the parts about the town's history but the kills themselves were very lackluster and i feel as though it could have a bit more inventive and graphic than it was. The later half of the book is definitely better than the beginning half. I liked this book but it could have been better. I do look forward to reading book two to find out what happens next.

It was a typical Sunday in Bushlake. The townspeople were attending church service, like they usually did. Many staying behind to chat, like they usually did. Except this Sunday was anything but usual. 16-year old Julian was carried in the arms of a sobbing Mr. Rooney. Dead.

The young people spent their days dreaming of when they could leave. Get away from the sleepy town where everyone knew everyone's business. But they couldn't escape their nightmares. The voices made him do it, he said. The men in the trees. "Scream all you want. No one will hear you. No one can hear you scream in your dreams."

~ Confusing at first but then wrapped up nicely. A thrilling page-turner.

If you like supernatural thrillers with psychological ramifications-then this book is for you! Admittedly there were parts that had me thankful that I read this during the day--in one sitting. It will grab you as it did me-the ending may be a cliff hanger and this is the first in a three part series!

I shivered through a lot of this book--how many more would be found dead--just how were they murdered and by who. There are twists and turns that will leave your mind spinning!

Will Stephanie Boulder be able to ultimately figure this out without being murdered herself?

This author definitely deserves the title that Amazon said of her--The Queen of Screams!

I have read quite a few books by this author and found this to be a decent read. I wish I would felt more fear from the bad man in this one and found the writing style to be slightly disjointed. I liked the characters, but did not like the way the book jumps around to different times and characters with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I would have liked to see the book start with the origin of the umbrella man instead of just having little blurbs here and there. I definitely feel that this author is talented and has such a great overall writing style, but this one just did not measure up as well to past reads.

Well done horror. Almost air tight. All the ends were tied up. Unfortunately for me, I won't be finishing the trilogy. A bit too scary for me, I don't really read horror. Maybe I'll pick up the sequels far in the future.

There are a LOT of characters, and quite a few twists and turns as well. And as previously stated, the premise will continue to have believability. There's a big feeling of knowing everyone's business in a little town. Meanwhile, there's both a town murder, and supernatural occurrences going on simultaneously.

This is horror, so it has a lot of triggers and is not for the sensitive.

So so so good!!! (Review contains spoilers)

The umbrella man was great! I didn't expect that ending at all. This book just proves that you never really know what a person is capable of. Growing up in a small town there are secret among every age group. Most parents will turn a blind eye to the evil ways of their child. But it takes a strong willed parent to stop their child even if it mean killing them. I tried not to put a spoiler in this review but it was hard so I tried to be very cryptic. This is a must read thriller tho. Great job Ms Rose!!!

Excellent.

This book was brilliant. It had me gripped from beginning to end. The storyline was good as where the character's. Had me thinking about whether things can happen in a dream.

It all starts with a murder on a small town. A young girl wakes up and is scared when everything she knows is not the same her life has turned upside down. Things are happening in her town and a journalist, a blind girl and her dad are the ones to help. Or can they?

I would highly recommended this book. Can't wait to read the next one in the trilogy.
