In the backroads and bayous of Louisiana lives a clan of mix matched shifters. Their Alpha, Kinkaid, has been kidnapped by a ruthless Dragon who thrives on torture and pain. Kaid struggles to survive against all odds. Unable to contact his clan, and weak and unable to shift from his Bear, he has given up almost all hope.
One night a human female is brought to the Dragon's compound against her will. Avaleigh has been chosen to be the Dragon's Mate. She is tortured to the brink of insanity, easily overpowered by the Dragon. Gradually she realizes that she has no chance of freedom. But will she be strong enough to save Kaid's bear? And if she does, will he be able to leave her there?
Sitting alone in a smoke filled bar room, another Dragon waits. Stuck in this place, for no reason other than his Dragon refuses to leave here, Daniel GreyStorm watches the patrons come and go. Frustration keeps him company as he waits, wondering what fascination this Louisiana backroads bar holds for his Dragon. He has no idea he is on a collision course with fate.
This book is the first in a new series, Avaleigh's Boys, about a group of shifters who make their home in the backwoods and bayous of Louisiana. Their clan consists of a mix matched group of five shifters who depend on one another and are loyal to no end. These are their stories.
WARNING: Intended for mature audiences. These stories contain hot bear, dragon, wolf and lion shifters. They like to cuss, fight and love their women. This book contains explicit love scenes, lots of use of the "F" word (among others), and some abuse by evil shifters. If you are offended by these subjects, please do not buy this book.
I write Paranormal, SciFi and Fantasy Romance. Why, you may ask? Romance, because who doesn’t love a good romance, and the lack of reality in the story lines - because, well, normal is highly overrated. I’m 55, I have two kids, one 32 and one 12 (yes, God does have a sense of humor), one grandchild, one husband, and a menagerie of animals. Literally, too damn many things that eat wandering around our property. I love to cook, and I am a voracious reader, though since I started writing I don’t get as much time to read as I once did. I am a homebody and prefer my writing/reading time to a crowd. I have had stories and fictional characters wandering around in my head for as long as I can remember. I started letting them out into the real world and surprisingly, people have loved them. I am a Self-Published Author, and I like it that way because I can decide what and when to write. I am by no means a formal, polished, properly structured individual and neither are my stories. But people seem to love the easy emotion and passion that naturally flow from them. A bit of a warning though, there are some “triggers” in them that certain people should avoid. I’m a firm believer that you cannot have light without the dark. You cannot fully embrace the joy and elation that my people eventually find if you do not bear witness to their darkest hours as well. So please be sure to read the warnings supplied with each of the synopses about my books before you buy them. I've got three series published at this time, Avaleigh's Boys - PNR, Whispers From the Bayou - Fantasy PNR, Haven - a SciFi, and three more in process. I’m a bit sarcastic, scathing actually, and a smartass to boot, so if I offend you, it is most likely not intentional. But be prepared because it probably won’t be the last time. I’m always glad to hear from readers; those who have followed me from the beginning, and those who have just found my people. So feel free to look me up and say hello, or just follow along; either way, I’m glad to have you.
I’m Not A Dragon’s Mate is the first book I have read by Ms. Neeley. I must agree with another reviewer, the beginning of this story was a little painful to get through with all of Lurin’s torturous acts, but Avaleigh doesn’t give up and neither should you. This turns out to be a story full of emotion, compassion, trust, and love beyond all else. The characters are well developed and even offer a bit of humor to the story. Be prepared, there are several surprises along the way to keep you turning the pages. Congratulations on your debut novel.
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 🖤💙💜❤️ Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📘 World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍 Character development: 🙂🥰😎😄😋
The heroine:Avaleigh - she was kidnapped and brought to the house of a wealthy man. The first few nights she spent chained to the wall of a basement, hurting from being beaten and kidnapped. After that, the man Lurin, kept her chained in his room trying to breed her. She was terrified of him and while raping her, he turned into a snakelike creature, though he said he was a dragon, and she was his mate. He planned on breeding her and had been keeping her drugged so much that her memories were affected. She could no longer remember her past before she was kidnapped.
The Hero:Kincaid - he was a bear shifter, “a strong, dominant, brawling, fucking Alpha Grizzly Bear” who was the leader of a small clan of mismatched shifters in the Louisiana bayou. He had also been taken by Lurin and was kept outside in an electrified cage with dragon’s fire beams, so he could not escape. He was trapped in his bear form and was often mistreated by Lurin’s servant, the smelly beaver shifter named Slatterly. Slatterly rarely gave Kincaid food or water and when he did, it was often rotten food, or he would urinate on it. He would also turn up the wattage on the electrified bars and take the hose and douse his cage to electrocute the bear.
The Story: after a while, Avaleigh was given a little more trust and she was no longer chained up. She could move freely in the house though was told that the windows and doors were electrified, and she couldn’t leave. Though she saw Slatterly coming and going through a certain door that wasn’t electrified to feed and torment the bear. Since then, she had been bringing the bear water and fresh food, so he didn’t starve. She was determined that she would free both herself and the bear.
The two of them get free, but this is definitely not your standard shifter romance. I don’t want to give things away, but the blurb does mention another man in the mix. The dragon shifter named Daniel GreyStorm. This is not a reverse harem, but things happen in this one which you usually don’t get in a standard romance. Which is one reason I really ended up liking it. I also loved it because Avaleigh immediately felt at home with all the guys in Kincaid’s clan. They all wanted to help protect her and felt like a family to her.
I was a bit worried at the beginning when I read the forward by the author Sandra Neely, it said that this was her first book, and though she went back to it years later and re-edited it and cleaned it up a bit, she didn’t change the story at all. However, this didn’t at all seem like a first book. The story was great, the characters were well defined and developed and the world building was terrific. I will definitely read the rest of this series; I want to find out how the rest of the guys meet their mates. I feel so invested in all of them already after this book. I have read a few of Sandra’s other series before and I love her characters and how they are always a mismatched group of men that are like a family.
Okay, so this series has some flat out horrid covers. And no, they don't get better. *shudders*
Right, for a second there, in the beginning, rereading the blurb I thought this was a menage and had a total moment of panic cause I already got the entire series. Checking out some of the shelves I figured I was safe and to get a move on.
Now here's a couple disclaimers. If y'all are riding the crimson wave or good ole Aunt Flo's visiting, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. Let me tell you, I already have horrid cramps and reading this and the agony Avaleigh was experiencing, I could just about literally feel my uterus tearing down its walls!
Now one more cause it's funny :p
Okay but no seriously, trigger warning:
I feel like this book will not be the cuppa for everyone. For one the H and h meet around the fifty percent mark. It read a lot like a Snow White retelling with a young woman adopting a bunch of men and all living together in a secluded cottage, where the men all go to work together, leaving the woman safe at home and you get the picture.
I liked the making of Avaleigh's Boys part of the book and not so much the Avaleigh and her mate parts. Which kinda really sucked but I just loved reading about the guys, each and every single one of them was just plain awesomesauce!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
***SOME SPOILERS*** This book really surprised me I'm not a massive fan of paranormal, but I grew to love the characters in the book. You get to hear all the different character's thoughts and feelings on things.
Avaleigh was taken against her will by a dragon serpent that drugged and repeatedly forced himself on her to breed his off spring. She wasn't the only one kept captive, there was also a bear. She found a way to escape but she wanted to set the bear free too. Luckily for her that bear was her saving grace. He turned out to be a shifter by the name of Kaid. She has no memory of her past. He belongs to a clan that took her in and treated her like a sister. So now she has a family of shifters that look after each other and they are all special to her for different reasons. Someone special enters her life but because of the way the dragon treated her she doesn't trust him. There's still the treat if the vile dragon coming after her and Kaid.
Will there be any peace from the dragon hunting her and Kaid down?
Will Avaleigh trust again and get an HEA that is destined for her?
Loved the sweetly naïve shifters, surviving in a harsh paranormal world. The human h has been horribly abused, and when she escapes she also saves a 'bear' from daily torture. He takes her home to his pack, and she finds out just how much they need her love and care. She's a wonderful heroine, a survivor with just the right amount of angst. The guys are all damaged heroes wanting to find their mates. It's an interesting mix of sweetness and brutality.
This is my first book by this author, but it won't be my last. The story starts out dark, but the MC keeping fighting. I loved the family dynamics, it shows you can make your own family and there was a lot of love and hope. I look forward to reading more of the series.
This story brings to mind a fairy tale retelling of 'Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs' if one factors in life Post Prince Charming arriving on the scene.
Appreciated the intent and overall story but didn't quite get on board with the world building and characters themselves. Some of the characters has promise while others not. I was more vested in Amos wanting to know his story.....
One non-spoiler comment: a snake-dragon? Is that even possible? Guess so.
This book starts in a very dark place. I wasn't sure where the story was going to go at all. I thought I knew exactly what was going to happen since you know, a shifter story and all. I was 100% wrong!! I'm so glad I was wrong. This story had some sexy scenes but that isn't the main focus of the story, they're an important part but not the whole basis. The ragtag bunch Avaleigh is adopted by is amazing. This group of shifters is something I need to read more about!! I so hope there will be more coming soon!! Definitely a new author I need to stalk, er, follow closely!!
WOW! This novel has just about everything that a shifter novel needs. Sandra R Neeley did a wonderful job with this novel. Ave and Kaid had such a horrific time when under the clutches of Lurin, when they finally escape, the reader knows that Lurin will come for them. When Daniel Greystorm enters the story and realizes that Ave is his mate, the reader knows that a showdown is coming. The clan does except Daniel and Avaleigh's Boys have gained a brother. The other clan members will get their stories also and what happened to Luin's henchman and what about Amos? Awesome story of love and family. Would give this novel more stars if Amazon would let a reader.
This book had me angry at times, crying, laughing and finally feeling like everyone was where they needed to be in order to find their one. They all ended up with hope fir a new day and an extended family. This paranormal romance has dragons, bears, wolves and a dragon-snake hybrid that is totally insane, with a beaver shifter for an accomplice !! If you have any history of abuse there might be scenes that trigger you, choose to read this book very carefully, but if you do, it will end very happily. 4⭐'s I received a gifted copy of the book and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review.
this is the first book I've read of sandras but I got to tell you it was fantastic the beginning very suspenseful kept you on the edge of your seat .avaleigh went through hell but she never gave up. I felt sorry for the bear kaid that she wasn't his mate and when she did meet her true mate wow .I hope kaid finds his true mate soon.I was really charmed by banes bam brother so sweet if not a little tortured poor guy but hey can't feel sorry for him he's doing great very talented. can't wait to read next book. great work sandra
This is the type of book that you wish you could always find to read. Although the beginning of the book contains possible triggers for some, it is a necessary part of the story in order to understand how the relationships develop further in the story. It is a shifter story that will make you angry, laugh out loud, and sigh at the romance. Let's not forget the beautifully written hot, sexy scenes. Wow! This is the first book that I have read by Sandra R. Neeley, but I assure you it will not be my last. This was a gift, and I wrote a review voluntarily.
What a great story with a wonderful unique cast of characters. (Well other than two but you'll figure that out I'm sure). I fell in love not only with Avaleigh but the whole mismatched clan that forms around her. The writer makes them all so alive and the story flows wonderfully. I can't wait to find out what she has in store for all of Avaleighs boys.
I was a little worried this book was going to be a dark story line in the beginning. It starts out with a harsh scenario that turns into an amazingly beautiful love story! It's not just love between a couple but the love of a put together family. This author combined imagination with heart and came up with a story that takes you through all the emotions. I fully enjoyed getting lost in this story!
I started reading this book at 2 pm today and couldn't put it down. This is a very gripping story plot. Well written and Hi love the whole clan. Hopefully Kaid will be the next to find his one. Even the villian was well written. Will be looking forward to the next in the series. 10 out of 10. Vwery well balanced book.
This is a precious tender story of how love can redeem the most injured, most hurt, most angry. The characters are tenderly written and the villain is absolutely evil. There are hints that we are not done with his evil and I cannot wait for the next book and I hope the third book hurries.
This book was crazy funny and wickedly awesome. I like Kaid but love Ave, she knows what she wants even if it scares her. She is a fighter and was awesome. I also like Bam. He was sweet.
This is not like any other paranormal book that I have read, and I Love that! This is so unique and so amazing I can't wait to see what Sandra come up with next!
Sandra Neeley is another new author for me. I was extremely excited about Avaleigh's Boys, her paranormal shapeshifter romance series. I'm Not a Dragon's Mate is the first is this series, and I was very happy that the book definitely lived up to my expectations.
This is the story of Avaleigh and Kaid, how they meet, and their adventures. The series is set in the backwoods bayous of Louisiana. The book begins with Kincaid (Kaid), a bear shifter and Alpha of his clan, being captured and imprisoned by Lurin, a "dragon" shifter. Apparently while Kaid was in a bar one night, his drink was spiked by Lurin's servant, Slatterly. He awoke imprisoned in a magically-imbued cage. He can't escape. He can't reach out to his clan through his bond with them. He's barely fed, receives practically no water, and grows weaker by the day. He truly has no idea where he is or how long he's been held captive, but he knows it's a long time. Even Bear, his shifter side, is starting to despair. Will he ever escape this hell he's been dragged into?
Kaid sees Avaleigh brought in one night by Slattery and Lurin but she disappears into the complex. He doesn't know why Lurin's brought her there but he knows it's not good. Avaleigh wakes in a darkened room, disoriented, with no memory, no idea where she is, or how she got there. Trying to explore her surroundings, she discovers she's chained, captive. As her eyes adjust to the darkness, she sees a man standing nearby who radiates evil from every pore of his being. He tells her she's his and she'll never escape. Avaleigh's terrified. When this stranger leaves, another appears. He's just as evil as the first man but at least he brings her food and water.
Avaleigh desperately tries to escape but being in a stone-walled room, shackled to the wall with a metal cuff on her ankle with less than 6 feet of chain, and totally naked, she's unable to move more than a few feet. It isn't long before the evil man, Lurin, appears again. If she thought she was in a nightmare before, she finds her ordeal was nothing compared to what awaits. Lurin rapes her over and over. She totally loses track of time. She has no hope of ever escaping, especially when Lurin tells her that he's going to breed her. Her memory is gone. She's a captive of an insane, brutal rapist, and there's absolutely no way for her to escape.
One day, Lurin appears and takes her on a tour of his fortress. He gloats, bragging about his powers. She sees Kaid/Bear for the first time while Slatterly is feeding him, noting the magicked field keeping him prisoner. As Lurin gets careless, he tells Avaleigh she's immune to the field surrounding the controls and the magic field because he's shared his blood with her. Then, unexpectedly, Lurin leaves the fortress for a few days, leaving Slatterly in charge. Big mistake! Avaleigh's allowed to visit the garden for short periods of time, and she remembers her immunity to the magic field. With Slatterly nowhere in sight, she slips over to the controls, and due to her immunity to the magic field, she's able to free Kaid. They break through the outer barriers and escape. Finally free of Lurin's citadel, Kaid and Avaleigh flee. But there are still barriers to their escape, a way for Lurin to track them once he returns. There's only one way to destroy Lurin's ability to track them but it's so extreme that both Avaleigh and Kaid are hesitant to use it because it can kill Avaleigh. But their circumstances are so dire, and they both know it's the only way to escape. So Kaid does the only thing he can do. As they move farther and farther down the mountain where Lurin lives, Avaleigh becomes weaker and weaker. She slows Kaid, who himself is weak from his months of captivity. Can Avaleigh survive what Kaid had to do to save them both? Is either one strong enough to even make it off the mountain? Will Lurin be able to track them? If he can, what will happen them? What about Kaid's clan? Can they find Avaleigh and Kaid? Will they be able to save them? And there are others who have a role to play in their story. Will they be a force for good or evil...or perhaps both?
This is only the beginning of Avaleigh's and Kaid's adventures. The drama, twists, and turns come at you fast and furious for the entire book, and you're never, ever bored. Their journey takes them from place to place, danger to danger, bringing tears, joy, happiness, terror, fear, and emotions of every kind. This isn't just a romance novel. Ms. Neeley has a true talent for weaving the very best elements of paranormal shapeshifter storytelling, action, adventure, and romance into an intriguing and spellbinding story that will keep you riveted from beginning to end.
One last note. This is an ADULT book with adult themes, explicit language, and sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy erotic romance with explicit sexual scenes, then PLEASE carefully think before buying ANY BOOK IN A GENRE YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY. There's always a book synopsis at any bookseller's website, as well as reviews on Goodreads and numerous booksellers' websites. PLEASE use these resources so you're certain the book you're buying is what you want. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY AS IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! She works extremely hard to provide a quality work product. If you know before you buy a book that you'll object to the subject matter, you're doing both yourself and the author an extreme disservice. If you do enjoy hot, erotic paranormal/shapeshifter romances, I highly recommend I'm Not a Dragon's Mate! I give it my best recommendation without reservation!
I received the book from the author after winning it in a book release party.
So I love paranormal and I love shifters. This book was a big win for me. I admit it sat on my shelf for a few weeks because I didn’t have the time. When vacation hit, BINGO I was all in.
When I started the book, I admit I was unsure if I was going to like it. The beginning is a bit dark but I promise It’s not NEAR as dark as other stories out there but be warned that there is non-consentual sex in the first few chapters. So there Is my review warning for ya……But like I said it’s not that bad but…..
Avaleigh was been kidnapped and is being held against her will by a really bad, bad, bad shifter. She is giving up on escaping but she sees another animal also being abused. Her final thoughts before she is willing to die is to save the bear.
Kaid is on his last string. He is the alpha of his pack but is being kept in his bear form. He can’t understand the spells that his is being contained under. When a strong-willed human who has endured her own abuses helps him escape, Kaid clams this human as his own. He gives her his bite to help hide her from the bag guy they are on the run from.
Kaid bring Ava into his clan of misfit shifters. The guys all love her and her care. She has becoming the missing link to their pack. The missing female needed to help the guys form the solid family unit they are. Kaid and Ava are in this predicament. They both love and care for each other but they aren’t the “True Mate” for one another. Should they go ahead and claim each other? If so then what if their true mate appears????
One night while singing her butt off with the guys in karaoke, in walks Daniel and everything flips on a dime!! Let’s just say Ava’s true mate found her and is not thrilled to see her snuggling with a group of shifters.
The bar scene was the best. I was giggling my butt off. But I loved seeing the Kaid-Ava-Daniel dynamic play out. Ava is pulled in many different ways. Her duty to her mate or her duty to her family. She doesn’t think she can have both!!
While the Pack is dealing and evaluating, the bad guy is tracking down his “mate”. He wants her back. Let’s just say things go really bad for him when he comes across a true mate and her pack family!!!
The other guys in the pack…seriously….Bam. My heart for this guy. But then Bane…..shut up. Mav and Goldiy cracked me up but…..but…Kaid……I need to know my Alpha is going to be ok!!!
Books 2 and 3 are downloaded so I shall find out soon enough!!
This is the first book I have read from this author and was quite pleasantly impressed at now nicely it flowed for a debut novel! Avaleigh and Kaid were both kidnapped by a dragon shifter who wants nothing more than to hurt them. After a daring escape, they meet up with Kaid's clan as Avaleigh completes a purge of the dragon's claim. She is adamant to not allow Kaid to complete a claim of her, however after a run in with another dragon, will she have a change of heart? I loved the emotions within the characters, how Avaleigh was able to stay around all 5 men and the book not be full of jealousy and fighting. I loved the scant use of sex within the book, Sandra did a fantastic job of using sex as a way to build up and improve the story instead of throwing in scenes just to have scenes present. 5 stars for this author, I am looking forward to her next book!
This was the first book I've read by this author and I'll admit I wasn't sure I would like it in the beginning. The author was forthcoming about the darkness of the beginning of the novel, so that didn't bother me, however, I loved Bear/Kaid and hurt for him, knowing that Avaleigh and he were not mates. But, the author did a fabulous job of bringing Daniel into the clan and making him part of the family. The supporting characters in this book were amazing, and I can't wait to read their stories. This author writes wonderful, in depth characters, that draw you in and make you love them. So glad this book was recommended to me. I definitely found a new series to love.
This book represents the reality of mixed 'clans'; there is nothing more real than the total confusion of the feelings within the clans and how they react to each other. The clans are real not hidden behind anything else. The book was fast paced and I loved how much I could not put it down until the last page. I want more... More of the very well developed characters, more of the crazy feelings such Kincaid being the Alpha that exists and Aveleigh being the glue that everyone sticks too. Daniel the love struck puppy. and all the boys accepting Aveleigh the 'human' into their clan. Great writing. Great reading, will be looking to the next book
Well, this was a shifter book with a difference and I LOVED it.
This author, Sandra R. Neeley, freely admits that she writes stories for herself so, we better not tell her that the stories are terrific or, she may stop writing them. lol
Anyway, this has mixed shifters, good and bad, fun and serious....whew, in other words, a bit of all sorts.
Admittedly, this book is R rated but apart from that, I think that it will appeal to a wide range of people.
Am I going to tell you about the story...no...why, because I'm not into spoiling a good book by telling you all about what happens.
So, go and grab your copy and see if you agree with my opinion.
For adult readers Lurin was a psycho shifter mix that starred as the villian in this story. He had some sort of deluded idea that if he kept dragons and mates separate, that he'd live longer. He takes Avaleigh against her will and does unspeakable things to her. It was also insinuated that he did something with Kaid's mate, so I'm eager to go on to book 2. This book has a group of rag tag shifters who form not only their own group, but a close knit family. I like the diversity of this crazy group.. I have read this book, this whole series multiple times and it is always awesome.
I have no idea how I found this author, but I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The beginning is a bit rough and contains rape and abuse.
I loved Kaid, Avaleigh, and the rag tag band of shifters in Kaid's clan. The story was endearing even with the aforementioned difficult sections. I totally loved Daniel and his love-struck puppy ways.
I loved these characters and the twist that happens with Avaleigh and Kaid. It really is a different kind of love story not only with Avaliegh and Kaid but with Avaleigh and each of the boys. They a ramshackle of a clan all with soft hearts and yet they could fight to Death for their own. These guys , three bears a wolf and a lion, each have a wonderful story waiting to be told and I want to read and each one.
