I bunkerläkarens våld

Rate this book

Q:
INTERROGATING OFFICER: At what point did you decide you were going to drug her?
MARTIN TRENNEBORG: Hmm, that would’ve been on the Thursday, when we met for the first time. (c)
Q:
A ‘sex contract’ was found on Martin’s computer, detailing his plans to hold several women captive at once, that the standard term of imprisonment will be ten years. If the woman does not agree to, for example, anal sex, another year is to be added to the ‘sentence’. Refusing sex in general is to be punished by a hundred-day extension. Any attempt to escape adds five years. He had sketches that proved he planned to keep several people prisoner at once and that he planned to use collective punishment. Those held were to write letters to loved ones, which would then be posted from places all around the world. (c)

Q:
In 2021, Martin Trenneborg can roam the streets of Sweden as a free man. He can return to his farmhouse in Skåne to think about what he might fill his life with, since he can no longer work as a doctor.
And he won’t even have to destroy his bunker. (c) Ohkaysy, I'm not sure what I think about this. Nothing that doesn't involve quite a lot of creative swearing, for sure.

Another true crime story. Horrifying and scary enough to make one go and hide away in some bunker right till the end of either humans or one's own.

A sex worker's story of getting into and out of a psycho's trap. Wow. Hope the girl got over this trauma at some point. Horrible stuff.

Isabel... can't help thinking she's very brave: I don't think many societies of now (or of any other time in history) are ready for such comings out as hers. Her getting over all the silent (and not so silent!) criticisms is, well, empowering, I'd say. And a sign of her being a veritable force of nature. May the power be with her.

Q:
When I grew up, I decided, I was going to be an astronaut and run a kennel for breeding small dogs, as well as having a modelling career and doing something to do with make-up. (c)
Q:
So before too long I started to skive. Once you realise you can get away with it, and there’s a whole world out there, one that just carries on while all the young people are stuck behind desks, it’s hardly surprising that the big wide world becomes more appealing than the next lesson, the one about which illnesses affect cows that are not properly fed. With the benefit of hindsight, I should clearly have just changed schools, maybe studied business or marketing. My parents took their usual approach of letting me choose my own path, for better or worse. When I did eventually quit, after two years and with incomplete grades, they weren’t exactly shocked. (c)
Q:
Before long though, we’d discovered that the kinds of jobs that might be offered to backpackers were really badly paid so we spent our days sunbathing, swimming and partying, living in cheap hostels and cooking for ourselves instead. We lived cheaply, just doing whatever it took to allow us to enjoy life as much as possible. And what a life! It really felt like all the muscles in your body relaxed and unwound as they felt the sun’s rays or the warm, salty waters of the ocean. But we also knew that the money we had wasn’t going to last forever, so we made sure we always had an ear to the ground, hoping to find work that might suit us. (c)
Q:
The ‘choosing your own hours’ thing was almost more important to me than the ‘really good money’ bit. (c)
Q:
She had long, flowing, shiny hair and beautifully plump lips; her golden-brown skin glittered beneath perfect make-up. I must admit that she did look a little bit tarty, but in an appealing way. Like an adventure wrapped up in the female form, and she behaved as though she owned the place. (c)
Q:
I will stand tall again. (c)

I have read a number of misery memoirs and they usually follow a similar pattern, but this story was something else. Being kept prisoner in a bunker for 6 days without knowing if you will ever see the light of day again I think must be one of the worst forms of torture. Having no window, no access to outside, no sun and no privacy and on top of that being at the beck and call of some lunatic who walks about talking about having sex with you and keeping you trapped for years. Disgusting. But the reasons this horrible excuse for a man’s actions will surprise you. A very brave and strong lady.

Most of the book is on the topic how fantastic it is to work as a prostitute. One of the worst book I have ever read.

This book gave me a lot of mixed feelings.
I can understand a little why some people gave it a bad review due to her personality. At one point I also found it hard to feel much sympathy for her when she wrote about her early life, as she came across as a spoiled brat, who thought the world of herself (and by the sound of it, thought pretty much only about herself).

But what I don't understand is why people get so bent out of shape for her enjoying her escort work, and expressing this. I think she mainly did the latter, because so many people have judged her for it, and she felt the need to "defend herself" somehow, and explain herself.
She worked as an escort of her own free will. She enjoyed sex, enjoyed lots of money, so why not?! There was, and always will be, a market for paid companionship, and paid sex. She practised one of the oldest jobs in the world! So I really don't understand people getting so pissed off about it and rating this book 1 star for it, simply because she enjoyed her job. She's not asking her readers to become an escort. In my opinion, this is a woman trying to stand up for herself and try to explain to the world why she did what she did. Something she really shouldn't have to do, if we just let everyone be and do what they enjoy.
Rating it 1 star for that, is in my opinion, as ridiculous as me rating the book 1 star because she has a dog instead of a cat, because I like cats better. •rolls eyes•

But anyway, back to the book, and my feelings about it.
So like I said, at one point she definitely came across way too selfrighteous.
But in the end, no one deserves to go through what she went through. It was horrible to hear (audiobook) what happened to her, and how he treated her. His mind games, the insecurity and fear she must have felt. It's awful, and I feel so sorry for her, that she had to go through all of this.
And then her poor dog.. I was so sad to hear that she never recovered from the entire ordeal, the poor thing. Her behavior afterwards is definitely quite understandable though. And in a way, very sweet. But above all, very sad.

And then there is the trial,.. this part pretty much always makes my blood boil! Because hardly ever is there any real, proper punishment. This time was like most others unfortunately. And the offender gets off much too easy. His sentense is far, far too low. And I can't even imagine the fear and anger Isabel most likely feels, when this super creep is a free man again.
I hope she is able to get her life together, and live a happy, free life again, and is able to fullfil her dreams.

About rating,.. I struggle a bit with this. How do you rate a book, written by the victim of a horrible crime??
I think the book was written well enough (the Dutch translation anway). I listened the audiobook, and it was well narrated. And I think it was very brave of her to tell her story.

I didn’t know this was a self-biography when I started reading it, and I do understand that the author has been through a lot! I feel very sorry for her!

Even though it was a horrible thing that happened here in my own country I’m still gonna rate this book as I would with any other book!

It only took a few minutes for me to realise that the person who wrote this book wasn’t a experienced writer! I had some very big problems with the writing!

I did not finish reading it but I did read a few articles about the kidnapping, I also watched a few interviews with the woman (in Swedish) !

It felt very wrong to read a book written in Swedish translated to English, I’m never gonna do that again, the only reason I read it translated was because I found it secondhand for like 1£!

I didn’t realise this was a memoir until I almost finished it. The author is clearly super brave and has been through a lot, but the writing in itself was quite weak and would’ve benefitted from help from an actual author.

What a very strong, brave, and determined woman Isabel is. Couldn't put this book down.

'You Are Mine' is the true story of Isabel Eriksson (an alias), and her imprisonment in a bunker for seven days. She was held captive by a doctor that was initially one of her escorting clients. The book tells the story of what happened, day by day. This format makes it easy to read and follow along with the actual timeline of things that happened to Isabel. Her experience is truly horrifying - thank heavens she managed to get out after just a week, especially given that her captor had told her he intended to keep her for 'years'. It's difficult to past objective judgment on a true story such as this, but I was very impressed with how it was written. It was straight to the point and did not have too many unnecessary details, which some tragic life stories do seem to have. I was really pleased to read that Isabel managed to escape and that her captor got prison time, but the time he got was not nearly enough, unfortunately. This is a fascinating - but truly sad - read.

Wow, this was fucked up. I had heard about this crime from a podcast that heavily referenced this book, but reading it myself was an experience. The kidnapper is one of the creepiest dudes I've ever heard about, and I've heard about a lot. At one point he compares "Isabel" to someone who has been incarcerated for a crime they didn't commit, and the way he just brings it up out of nowhere, to comfort her, gives you a very creepy insight into his mind.

A big part of the book is "Isabel" basically going "soo you're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation?" and telling us about what in her life that led up to her becoming an escort. It's an interesting story and obv she has the right to her own narrative, but it definitely glamorizes sex work in a way that didn't really sit right with me.

Anyway, thank fuck she got away after six days. Even the thought of those days is fucking terrifying.

Just want to start of by saying that my review is not to diminish her experience and her trauma, but I feel like I need to give an honest review for those who haven’t read it

When I first started to read the book, the hook caught my interest, but it was a real struggle to finish. Put bluntly nothing much happened. This book is over two hundred pages and describes how Isabel was in a bunker for six days, with her kidnapper Martin treating her like a live in girlfriend. Although he did hold her against her will and mentally manipulated her, he didn’t physically or sexually harm her while she was captive, yet she compared her kidnapper to josef fritzl which was far from the truth. And since there isn’t much to tell she fills in the space about her experience as an escort and how good it is

It was interesting reading the extracts from the interrogation by the police at the start of each chapter, and seeing a bit into how Martin operates and thinks. He was definitely very intellectual in the way that he could pinpoint her thoughts. It was also interesting reading how she got through her experience and her process of thinking eg. “I mustn’t eat too early and get so hungry by the time he gets back that I don’t have the energy to defend myself, but then I also need to make sure I don’t eat so late that I end up feeling stuffed or giving myself a stitch.” Although it is puzzling to me why she would wait for the man she was so deeply afraid of and didn’t trust to drive her to the police station once she was free.

Not trying to say her experience isn’t worth being told, but I think you can just as easy watch videos on the case rather then spend time and money reading the book

I do not believe it’s a well written book. The author is not a writer and used writing as therapy. The book would have been more effective if after completing the “therapy”, a ghostwriter would have re-written it. Most of the book sounds like written by a teenager and it doesn’t come across well and it’s hard to feel any empathy.

Regarding the profession, prostitution is a dangerous profession. I could not imagine inviting a complete stranger into your home. How did he find her services and why wasn’t he vetted? The author really didn’t display any caution or common sense.

The better writing part is towards the end, the last 20 pages. Maybe with practice, the author got better, maybe it’s poor translation into English.

But I do support the author because of what has happened to her. The perpetrator was released after 4 years, changed his name and continue living free in Sweden. What a horror.

P.s. I do not support her poor life choices. Little work and easy money shouldn’t be aspirations by any young girl. Having Hilton Paris as a role model is quite telling.

Sometimes harrowing, but ultimately a story of survival

The woman in this story he’s earned my sincere respect. She went through the most horrendous ordeal - only to be terribly let down by the courts. As is often the case, the feelings of her abuser were taken into consideration as much - perhaps more - than hers. Yet she was the victim.

However, you can tell that she is a very strong person and one of life’s winners. She will make a success of her life. The man who kidnapped her will one day be free and my hope is that he never gets the opportunity to repeat his terrible crimes, or even murder some girl one day. I really don’t know how the court system - those who failed to put him away for a very, very long time - can justify his ridiculously short sentence.

In 'The Collector' by John Fowles withdrawn and uneducated Frederick collects butterflies and takes photographs. Until he calmly abducts art student Miranda, believing she will grow to love him in time... That is fiction. Unfortunately, in reality, abductors are charming doctors who plan and built bunkers for 5 years before kidnapping someone and make enough room in the basement for many people.

You Are Mine tells a horrific story of 'Swedish Fritzl'. Isabel and her dog are abducted and the captor drives her 350 miles to his home near Kristianstad in southern Sweden where he locks her in a soundproofed cell. Miraculously, Isabel escapes after a week.

A cautionary tale

Fantastic book very sad but triumphant ending

I choose this book as the review appealed to me but this book is quite a journey from a good life choosing to work as an escort might not have been wise but she showed how wise she was by beating Martin evan though I doubt she was ever to be free she got there shame about her dog the only reason she stayed sane to get Nellie out pity Nellie died. Martin deserves a lot more than 10 years. Great courage shown writing the book a very inspiring Survivor

This is very well written and overall a very good way of being heard for the woman that this happened to. She doesn’t describe the abuse in detail, but how different situations in her life led her to meet her captivator. The woman that endured this seems smart and like a wonderful person, truly heartbreaking for something like this to have happened to her. She explains how she gets into being an escort and is not ashamed of her history nor what has happened to her. Amazing. I hope she is doing well.

I didn’t finish this book… I barely got started and can’t read it.
The way the book starts out is in a dialog of a officer and the kidnapper talking… chapter one starts the same way and her walking up in the bunker and then I get to chapter two and it starts with dialog.

I was hoping to be able to get passed the back and forth from the investigation to her telling her story but I can’t, I don’t like that…. Why not save the dialog for the end when she gets out or what not. Ahhh oh well was worth a shot

I read this book fairly quickly and found it mildly interesting. I agree with other reviews that state you cant compare what she went through with Josef fritzel and other madmen who have kept girls locked up for decades. Her ordeal must have been scary, but he never physically harmed her.
I also didnt enjoy how she made working as an escort (prostitute) glamorous and fun. However you looked at it, she sold her body for sex.

Helt ok!
