On a calm November evening, a ship disappears off the coast of Washington without a trace...

When Darcy Davies finds a handsome man washed up on the beach, he’s three things: injured, naked, and rude. And he’s got a few demands. Somewhere safe. No hospital.

Tell no one.

While Darcy takes him in, she’s no fool. She knows he was involved in whatever happened at sea that night. But is he a victim or a villain? One thing’s for certain—even if he’s not a danger to her person, this sexy stranger is a danger to her heart.

Gabriel Barnes can’t tell which is more of a pain in his side—the curvy brunette who plucked him off the beach, or the literal pain in his side.

Gabriel's secret will be hard to keep in such close quarters, especially with injuries that are healing much too fast. But he's got bigger problems.

It wasn't an accident that brought him here.

It was a betrayal.

3.5 'Assassins of the sea' stars

When one foggy morning, on her usual walks down the beach with her dog Oscar, Darcy Davies, finds a naked man with two gushing wounds, washed up on the beach, she's shocked but her human instincts rush in and she decides to help the man, and get him to a hospital. But he's adamantly against going to the hospital and to persuade her not to take him there, he offers her money to cover for all the trouble of keeping him safe in her own house environment. Being a bit short and having her sister's education on her mind, Darcy accepts to hide him inside her house as long as it takes for him to heal and attend to his wounds.
He wasn't the typical damsel in distress. But then again, she wasn't the typical knight in shining armour.

At first, she's wary of this stranger and the precaution is on alert BUT she's also taken by his features…
His hair was a champagne blonde, almost silber, and it curled just down to his sharp cheekbones and angular nose.

He was pale, and he had the graceful and muscular body of a swimmer.

His eyes were a startling, crystalline blue.

As the stranger heals, she can only find out his name - Gabriel - and nothing more, cause he's mysteriously holding out any further information about him., hence he pays her not to ask questions. This game prolongues until their mutual attraction makes them yield. They form a friendship and slowly find the little things about each other through the conversations, but things heat up when Gabriel reveals to Darcy, who he really is, or better yet what he really is and why he found himself in this situation.

Darcy is stunned but she gets on her feet pretty quickly and decides to help Gabriel to get away and the time runs out quickly for Gabriel and Darcy as they know it could never last...
People who never said hello never had to say goodbye

before they leave...

but it's not that easy to follow through, as the man, Nathan/Nate, who wants to catch Gabriel to finish him off, is so nearer than they thought and has been there all along under false pretences...

things escalate into a face off, between the two, but without the real winner...as the sense of betrayal of the same kin is high and lingering in the air...life somewhat does goes on in truce, until the ending reveals that the real betrayal might actually be much closer to Darcy then any of them could ever have expected.

This is my first encounter with this author's work, and I sure do like discovering new authors. Ms. Hardgrave writes in 3rd person and it's narrative follow up of the story, usually that makes it somewhat detaching from being truly connected to the characters and what they are going through but in the paranormal genre, for me, narrative type of telling the story suits just right, giving us the just the right touch of the mysterious and "unreal" as much as possibly approachable to get invested.

What I found a bit misplaced in the story, was the pacing and the tempo of the events happening, the attraction between the characters works but it does not hold the attention, for me, to develop into smth more. It all happens in a span of just a few days, barely a week and the drive that sets the characters in motion was not strong enough for me to find it believable.

Also, the continuaiton of the story felt like jo-jo, delivering ups and downs for me, and so the rhythm changed with them, and especially somewhere along 70% when we should be getting the denouement of the plot, the reason for heroine's actions seemed like the unnecessary input, only so it could come to the conflict in the plot. That part made no sense to me, whatsoever. Then the epilogue again brought the tension and the twist into the mix, making me intrigued and interested into the follow up of this story!

While walking her dog in the morning, Darcy discovers a man on the beach, cut up and naked. She wants to get him medical help but he refuses asking that she hide him in her home while he recuperates. Being short on cash for her sisters college tuition, Darcy agrees to let Gabriel staying with her. Which she quickly questions because they get on like water and oil.

Darcy is concerned by Gabriel's need to be hidden and why he was left for dead on the beach.

Meanwhile, a somewhat friend/neighbor, Nate gets very stalkerish and a boat disappears without a trace. Somehow, Darcy knows it is all connected. She just has to figure it out before she becomes a victim.

The story starts out pretty strong, keeping my attention but then it stalled. I don’t know if it was the 3rd person narrative or I just became detached from the characters and their plights. Then at the very end there is a really interesting plot twist that made reignited my enthusiasm for the series but I don’t think the next book is going to be Gabriel and Darcy’s story.

You’ve got the three e’s, Easy, enjoyable and entertaining.

Good story, a little rushed.

I received this ARC copy of Betrayal from Danielle Hardgrave.

The Basics:
Genre: PNR
Series or Standalone: Series. (But I have a feeling the next book will focus on a different character.)
Rating: 3.75 Stars.

Short, sweet, with a bit of action.

The story focuses on Darcy and Gabriel, Darcy finds Gabe injured and naked on the beach while on her morning walk with her dog. Despite being injured and in a thoroughly vulnerable position, he remains himself enough to make demands and offer up money in exchange for her help in getting somewhere safe and he definitely does not want to go to the hospital. So Darcy agrees to let him stay with her, seeing as she could use the money and the guy clearly needs help.

Seeing as the series is called 'Sea Assassins' I don't think revealing our main guy Gabe is an assassin counts as a spoiler. I'm going to be honest, I was a little bothered Darcy wasn't more put off by it. But I suppose that would of put a dampener on their playing house while she fed him back to health. And when I say fed him back to health, I mean it. This book made me hungry. There seemed to be a lot of food being cooked for such a short book.

I enjoyed the book. I liked the back and forth between to the two characters. I think the shifter aspect was interesting. I haven't read any other books with that kind of shifter before. I'm glad they're able to partial shift as well as full shift, as not being able to shift while on land would be a downer on their shifter abilities. I like that Gabe softened up towards her dog, Oscar; as dogs always come before men in my view. #lovemelovemydog ;)

I would like to read the next book in the series when it comes out, so I'll be keeping my eyes peeled.

Find a naked man laying on the beach? Yes Please! lol, ok so maybe only in great books can I dream with authors like this one. I would be a little suspicious of he wants to come home with me and heal and I should tell no one. Well this book caught peaked my interest for sure. I wanted to read what happened next. He may heal quickly too??? maybe??? You will have to find out. I enjoyed this book. * I received this free copy and this is my honest review*

I did not see this one coming. I was in for a shock when the truth came out. I happened to be so curious and so attracted to Gabriel by this time, I was fine with whatever home truth he had to share.

Darcy is an opinionated and loving woman that thinks she is much stronger than she has to be. She is snarky and humorous and I loved when she and Gabe got into cutting matches.

Really good read with unexpected moments.

My thanks go to the author for the recommendation of this book.

If you've read my blog before you may have seen that I have previously read another series by this same author and I bloody loved it. Very much up my alley, street and avenue in terms of genre. Paranormal romance is one of my favourite genres and I love all different aspects of it, however on reading the blurb for this and realising it was about shark shifters I was really taken aback. I've never read anything with this type of shifter before, I ususally stick to what I know, i.e wolf shifters. So it was with a little trepidation that I started reading this book, however I needn't have worried, it was fabulous.

The author really knows how to write PNR, how to build the world she is creating. Her characters are spunky and witty. Throw in the whole alpha thing and you have a recipe for success. It totally gels and I couldn't help but get more drawn into the story in each chapter. It has snippets of dark elements but the story itself isn't dark but the air it creates feels eerie, in a really good way.

If you're looking for a different take on the PNR world then I urge you to give this a go. It's different but in a very good way.

A short, sweet story with some suspense towards the end.

The story started out well, grabbed my attention and held it for the first half of the book however it got a little bit slow in the middle.
The time that Gabe and Darcy spent playing house and getting to know each other was cute but it slowed the pace of the story down a lot. I would have liked something else to be happening to break up the monotony of their days. I kept waiting for them to give in to their attraction to each other so the story could finally move forward. I'm not a huge fan of sex scenes as I don't think they are necessary to the enjoyment of a good story but the author did a good job of building up the sexual tension so their relationship didn't feel rushed.
The final third of the book was more to my liking when there was tension, suspense and action when Nate catches up to Gabe. Nate has a very cold, creepy kind of persona which made him appear very threatening in his interactions with Darcy. I found him to be a very interesting character.

I wasn't expecting the epilogue to end with that little twist so now I can't wait to read what happens next!

I received an ARC of this from the author book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Danielle Hardgrave!

Holy poopidooders that ending! What a cliffhanger! Okay, let's rewind the tape *insert rewind noise here* and start from the beginning.

Darcy is such a sassy female lead and I really liked reading about her. That being said, she did come off as harsh for someone who tends to like people and not be able to let go of them. Due to that, I didn't really like her until a third of the way through the book.

The fantasy aspect of this book was way weird and original. I'm still trying to figure out if I like it or if I'm weirded out by it - trying to picture it was quite interesting. Danielle, where do you come up with this stuff?

In general, I liked the story line, and the romance aspect of it. The plot was a little predictable, which took away from the interest slightly, but overall, an entertaining read!

Gabe is a shark shifter, his injured and naked on a beach.

Darcy has a surprise on her morning walk, a naked man who is badly injured, he talks her into taking him in, well offers her money.

You could say the relationship is a little prickly to begin with but the prickliness turns more fun as the days pass.

I liked both the main characters I even liked the 'baddie' I know I shouldn't but there you go.

I would have liked a little more q&a between Darcy and Gabe as his a shifter and his shifter side is water based - yes I have unanswered questions!

An easy read shifter story. Going to read book 2 now.

I want t thank the author for providing me a copy of this book!

Wow I discovered Hardgrave when I read to trust a wold and let me say after reading a second book by her I am that much more in love with her naughty paranormal romances. She is fantastic at writing and this story was pretty short.... and it did not disappoint.

Well I was disappointed that I did not have another 2000 pages to read of this story but hey you can't always get what you want right?

This story was pretty well developed for a shorter book and of course the characters are to die for. I love paranormal male characters, I am not sure what that says about me personally but hey I am a weird one.

*I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinion stated are solely my own and no one else's*

3.5 -4 stars

I really enjoyed Betrayal; it had suspense, mystery, and a sizzling romance.

I liked both characters; their constant bickering, sass and rudeness flying back and forth was definitely entertaining. The sexual tension was thick and palpable; intensifying their attraction. I think the only thing that bothered me was Darcy trying to bleed money out of Gabe which, didn't sit well with me, it made her appear like a greedy money grabber.

Nate had a creepy, cold, dangerous vibe which literally gave me the shivers.

I was definitely surprised at what Gabe shifted into - I've read loads of shifters books and this one was definitely unique and original.

This was a good read and I look forward to reading the next book.

I've read a lot of authors who can write amazingly sensual, passionate erotic scenes and create awesome, slow-burn sexual tension.

But I've never read anyone who can blend that kind of sexual chemistry with actual laugh-out-loud humor like Danielle Hardgrave.

I loved the first two books of Hardgrave's Unnatural Alliances series, which mix vampires, werewolves, Norse mythology, and an absolutely crackling sense of humor. In Betrayal, the first book of the Sea Assassins Trilogy, Hardgrave takes the idea of sexy shifters and runs with it... all the way into the ocean.

The book opens with Darcy Davis stumbling across an injured, naked, and (natch) super hot man on an isolated stretch of beach. Darcy, of course, does what any of us would do: She calls him "flotsam" and pulls out her cell phone to get an ambulance up in there..until he offers to pay her enough money to cover the tuition costs for her younger sister.

Darcy and Gabriel - the mysterious, naked man - are such convincing and realistic characters that, by the time Gabriel is forced to reveal his true identity as a shape-shifting shark assassin, it seems totally plausible. And the chemistry between them is so palpable that I cheered out loud when the lights finally went out (even if it was because a storm knocked out the electricity).

Add in the dozen or so lines that made me snort laughter over my Kindle, and you have the kind of book that kept making my husband look at me and say, "What the heck are you reading?"

To which I could happily respond: "Shape-shifting shark assassin romance."

And it's every bit as delicious as it sounds.

This was my first story by this author. I overall enjoyed the story, and while it was a 4 star read for me, I do intend to grab book two. This one just took longer than I like to hook, line, and sink me in to the story. It was a little slow but I honestly feel that relates to the need to divulge the back story and lay framework for the series. There are questions that are not answered and I'm hoping carry over in to book 2 for a resolution. It definitely has made me want to know what happens.
Darcy was a fun female lead. She was unique and refreshing. I actually really liked the character and all the nuances she has about her. As the story evolves, we find out even more about her. My heart actually went out to her. She grew and found herself with Gabriel. It was refreshing to watch her become stronger on her own and with a man.
Gabriel didn't need the trouble of a girl. What he needed was to recover. Some of the secrets were revealed about him and I feel there is so much more waiting to happen.
Again, it was a different read for me and not in a bad way. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new type of shifter read, to check this one out.

I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this book.

I really enjoyed the blurb and couldnt wait to read it. It was really easy to read and kept my attention. I loved the banter between Gabriel and Darcy. She really didnt put up with his crap. Gave as good as she got. My issue with it is it read like a contemporary romance book. Paranormal didnt really play a big part in it. I think it would have been better received had it been without the aspect of Paranormal. Dont get me wrong I love PRN its my genre but this lacked the development for it. A little disappointing at that because lets be honest there arent many shark shifter books, and I would loved to have so much more detail about that world. It mainly came out at the end. The book wasnt as descriptive as I would like and I dont mean the sexy times. Just all around. Needed more in my honest opinion.

Danielle Hargrave’s “Betrayal” introduces us to a different kind of shape shifter. Well, at least one that isn’t nearly as common. When Darcy rescues Gabe, it most definitely isn’t love at first sight. But what starts as a business transaction soon develops into something much more. Except Gabe has a very big secret that will come out and when it does, will he lose her forever?

I enjoy a good paranormal romance and “Betrayal” was enjoyable for many reasons. I particularly liked how they both misjudged the other based on first impressions and how it also became the basis for some good natured teasing.

This is a fun story with all the elements of good storytelling.

I give it a high rating because I like the concept of it and the excitement, fun and suspense. I like it when a woman has enough sass to not take any guff from the male. There is a lot of intrigue and suspense. One you have to read to know what it going on. I recommend it. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

What better way to get over my fear of sharks than reading a shark shifter romance? Now I love shifter stories so lets see how I cope with the shark part. Here’s hoping they stay on land for the most part. Well fingers crossed anyway.

Talk about a hottie being swept right up to your feet, a nice looking naked one to boot. It’s not just muscles and hotness he’s packing but very bad looking wounds too. Looks like something took a bite out of him and it’s not till later that you find out how real that thought is. Now Darcy’s first thought with finding said naked man is panic as she fears he might already be dead and that soon turns to annoyance when he makes it known he is alive and has no intention of going to hospital. He makes her a deal, five grand to stay at her place while he heals. Now she needs the money and not for the greedy reasons he might think to start with. So she helps carry/drag him back to her place, which as luck would have it was only a stones throw from the beach he washed up at. He insists he just needs rest but she insists more that he will let her at least bandage him up. Well after he pays her that is. Half now half later as neither seem to want to trust the other. With good reason to start with as it’s a very strange situation they find themselves in.

Rest is all Gabriel can think about, well when he’s trying to not think about how good his helpers clothes seem to cling to her. If only she wasn’t so annoying to him he might be tempted. He knows it’s risky to stay there but needs time to heal while he tries to figure out his next move. Said move not being to claim the sexy helper with his version of appreciation. The more he protests, if only in his mind, the more you know he wants her.

Darcy landed herself in danger from the moment she took Gabriel in and it looks like that danger might be closer than she thought. Even from someone she would consider a friend. Though really she should just trust her dog Oscar’s instincts. He might be weary to start with new people but if he changes his mind you should trust him. The same goes for if he doesn’t.

Now it’s not just her that the hot brooding patient might be putting in danger but her sister Sophia too and that’s something she won’t take. He needs to tell her everything not matter what. Nice final words as what he has to tell – or rather show her – could have her running for the hills. Oh you know the fact that he is a shark-shifting assassin. Seems danger and truths bring forth passions also as its not long before the wall they both put round each other falls. One kiss sparks a light and its not long before they burn. Passions running high but the danger that follows is very real. Here’s hoping they don’t bite off more than they can chew. Shark wise not too bad for me so lets see how I get on with the next one.

I received a copy of this book from the author via Caldwell Publishing for my honest review.

Darcy is a young women who has had some hard things happen in her life. With her parents gone she was left to help raise her sister who is now in college. So with the thought of money always on her mind she eagerly accepts money from a stranger on the beach. Little did she k ow that she was going to get caught up in a feud that would change her life forever. She is super kind and generous. Her dog is a star as well. I loved that she was well rounded that she knew about tough times and wasn't going to let that get her down. That she was strong but also a vulnerable women.

Gabriel is a creature of the sea. I won't reveal what he is just know it's pretty awesome. It takes a while in the book to get to what exactly he is but it's kind of amazing when you get to see it. He has a lot of money somehow from his other job. A job that puts him in danger but also keeps him fit. He comes off as a smart aleck but he is very kind as well.

I loved how this book was paced. It was kind of slow so you could get to know these characters as humans before the big reveal as to what Gabe is. This was a good book and I can't wait for more. Book two looks to be interesting.

Darcy finds a badly hurt man on the beach. He demands her to take him to her place. It's there that she learns who he is. His name is Gabriel, or Gabe as she calls him. He is demanding, eats a lot, and can be rude. However, he needs a place that is safe to rest and her place will do. Over a few days they get to know each other. Gabe entrusts her with a secret that he has told no one. They learn their connection of Nate.

Gabe also finds that he enjoys being with Darcy and vice versa. Things heat up between them, only for him to leave. Nate uses Darcy to lure Gabe back for the battle.

This is a good book, but it could have been even better if there was more of a plot and more tension. I liked Gabe, but I wanted more information about him. He didn't feel real to me, he felt ghostly. Darcy, she was ok. The one I really liked was Nate. You hated him, but you knew where to stand with him.

Great story! I've only read a book with a shark shifter once I think and always wondered why there weren't more. I'm happy to say this was a good one. I do wish there was more of him in the water...maybe showing Darcy his full beautiful form, but overall the plot was a good one. What is Nate's problem anyway??? I'm ready for the next book!

I was gifted Betrayal by Danielle Hardgrave in an ARC in exchanged for an honest review. This is my second time reading a book from this Author, and I have to say she is so creative when it comes to her stories that's what I love most about her books she always keeps her readers on their toes. This story was not different I loved how she made the leading woman the hero who saves the sexy hot man. Darcy is putting herself in a tough situation when she helps Gabriel not only fixing him up but letting him stay at her home. Because their is a badman who is after him that would do anything to get what he wants. Darcy at the time doesn't know the danger she in all she knows is that the sexy hot stranger she saved is offering to pay her to let him stay at her home well he heals. Unfortunately for Gabriel his secrets about to be exposed what will he do. In the beginning Darcy was just a friend to him who was starting to understand him but its starting to become more between them. Will they be able to be together and find their happy ending you will have to find out by reading their story.

Betrayal by Danielle Hardgrave
4 star review
Read and reviewed on behalf of 2 girls who love books blog.
I was intrigued by this book after I read the synopsis. I wasn’t sure what I was going to get but what I got was something good! I really enjoyed the story! It was totally different to anything I have read before. Yes it was rushed in a few places but I still liked it. There were some good twists that I certainly didn’t see coming. I loved the relationship between Darcy and Gabriel. Their relationship did develop quickly but it was a relatively short story so I didn’t find this an issue.
There were a few ups and downs in the story but I still found myself engrossed in it. I liked the epilogue and I think that it leads us nicely into the next story which I will be looking forward to reading. I liked the uniqueness to this storyline and it was something that I wasn’t expecting when I first read the synopsis.
If you are a fan of PNR stories then I think that this will interest you – I would definitely recommend it and give it 4 stars!

While out walking her dog on the beach, Darcy, a bartender and book designer, finds a naked man washed ashore. He is badly injured but refuses to go to hospital. She takes him back to her little house and gets him cleaned and bandaged up.

Gabriel is an assassin and was betrayed by his partner and clan member. He doesn't take long to heal, faster than a normal person. He thinks Darcy is just another greedy person because she charges him five thousand dollars for him to stay at her place. But the money goes to support her sister in college. Then the more time spent together, the more attraction grows. But his partner is still looking for him and the only way to keep Darcy safe, is to leave. Can Darcy and Gabe put aside their differences and make a future together?

Great story. Took a little too long to tell us what Gabe was. Couple of sexy sex scenes. A slight cliffhanger. This is a new author for me and will be checking her out more.

Finding a naked injured man on the beach Darcy does the only thing that seems right and tries to call an ambulance for him but it seems he's well enough to offer her a counter deal take him home and let him heal there and he'll give her a nice little chunk of money for her trouble. Money she could definitely use to help her sister through college.

Greed seems like a motivating factor for Gabe being allowed to stay but the more he gets to know her the more he realizes just how different she is. And as his wounds heal faster than they should he begins to question just how much he can trust her to know.

I love the back and forth banter between these two. Each one trying to outdo the other while also trying to figure the other out. And then there's Oscar who was a great comedic relief just when things were getting a bit too serious!

I enjoyed the storyline and the interesting twists and I'm curious to see how this series will continue!
