Once Upon a Prince

Rate this book
Living in his twin brother’s too perfect shadow, Evander Galanis has struggled to prove himself a worthy heir to the throne. It seems the only thing he excels at is disappointing his father. Impulsive, spoiled, and surrounded by an air of entitlement, he doesn't yet understand what it means to be king. When he is left in charge one day in his father’s absence, he has the opportunity to prove his worth, but makes a grave mistake that costs him everything. Disgraced and stripped of his title, he flees the castle in a rush of anger.

Deep in the forest, alone and unwanted, lives a mysterious forestling, Mathias. Mathias isn’t like others. With the ability to foresee people’s death, he believes himself to be cursed. Feared and misunderstood by everyone, the only family Mathias has are his forest friends. Until, one day, a stranger wanders into his home and refuses to leave.

Two worlds collide when the entitled Prince and the naive forest boy meet. Evander and Mathias are like night and day, but they can’t fight the connection between them. When Mathias’ visions shed blood on his family, Evander needs to decide if he will risk the man he’s grown to love to save the Kingdom that cast him out, or leave them to their fate.

I love Nicky James's work, but I've struggled some with Jaclyn Osborn. This book felt more like an Osborn book. Osborn is really fond of dangling modifiers, and they were on full display here.

Editing issues aside, while I enjoyed the sweetness and sexiness of the story, the setting was schizophrenic (medieval with castles and kings but with Greek gods), and Evander didn't go through enough for me to fully believe his change of heart.

Evander was just so narcissistic and horrible at the beginning, I never really warmed up to him. The evil twin brother was the most one-dimensional of villains, and Mathias almost too good to be true.

I didn't like the way the ending played out, even though it's a definite forever kind of HEA. I did like all the cute animals.

Prince Evander... Beware a spoilerish review

Prince Evander was an arrogant young man who was set to be come king after his father but one unwise choice leads him in being stripped of that title. Instead his twin brother Lycos is set to be next in line. Evander is not pleased by this news and decides to runaway from home.
Prince Evander runs into the Forest where he encounters a young man by the name of Mathias. However, Mathias is no ordinary man he has a gift or rather what he believes is a curse. Mathias believes his touch causes death to people. Therefore, he refuses to touch anyone or be too near to people but they also choose to stay away from him deeming him a demon child. This village, in which he once lived, has made him an outcast. Due to their cruelty, Mathias has taken up residence in dwelling in the forest. The very same forest where he meets the prince.
On first meeting the two do not get along, the prince still his arrogant self and Mathias still his anxious nervous self. Over time the two grow an understanding, since, the prince refuses to leave and Mathias secretly likes the company. Eventually romance blossoms between the two and for the first time Mathias allows someone else to touch him.
The two of them build a home life together and everything seems to be going well but then a visitor from Prince Evander's past comes to deliver him news of the Kingdom.
Lycos, Evander's brother has become king under mysterious circumstances and he has become more of a tyrant than a king. The people fear Lycos and he has seemingly let the power of the crown go to his head. The news does not seem to surprise Evander since he has known his brother's true colors all along. Evander is told to stay in the forest and keep himself safe. At first, he does, but after time, Evander feels he must return home to fix the Kingdom. And let me just tell you now that's where so much drama goes down and HUGE revelations happen. Ahhh...so good.
This story was just so entertaining. I really enjoyed Matty and Prince Whines-Alot ;) This story wasn't just fluff their was some substance to it. It is yet another book by Jaclyn Osborn that I really liked. Of course, Nicky James also had a hand in it! IMO these authors worked well together.
I did minus a star for the overuse of the word Boo. I do not mine terms of endearment but when one gets used excessively it makes me start to cringe. So no just no on that! LOL
Overall a good read :)

A fairytale with a Prince that has a lot to learn about love and himself, a nasty villain (I wanted to see dead), deities and their magic, and a sweet innocent virgin MC. What could go wrong?

A LOT! But I loved how both Evander and Mathias got to know each other slowly and without guile. In the process, Evander redeemed himself from his previous assholery attitude and Mathias got the confidence to be himself and take a stand. They were true to themselves and eventually discovered how important they are to each other.

Those were some hot and tender sexy times indeed, worth going back a few pages to re-read again.
🔥🔥🔥

Evander and Mathias did not have it easy, both had to give the ultimate sacrifice. They won in the end because they did get their happily ever after (with blessings from the gods themselves)...A perfect ending.

Falling in love is so sweet.
I'm on the hunt now for more fairytales!😋

I have a book type.

This is it.

This was so very enjoyable to me! I am now kicking myself for waiting so long to read it.

The authors did a fantastic job. I'd love for them to do another.

I love Fairy Tales and this was a brilliant "new" addition to that theme.

I really enjoyed this. I loved Evander and Mathias together. Fair warning Evander was an ass, in the beginning, he really was but he redeemed himself. A lot happens in here that of course others will explain better.

Suppose I have to admit that during the first part of the book I was not far away from DNF. It's were crown prince Evander is portrayed as a self-centered, weinsteinesk douchebag with a big anger issue. Didn't matter much that he was only the shallow brawn to the brain his deceptive twin turned out to be. His only good characteristic was that he saw his twins real color - and nevertheless stepped into his trap because in the end he really believed the insinuation that a true king has to be feared by his people.

I just couldn't see how the author would be able to make me believe the necessary catharsis after such a start. Would have needed a heavy downfall of the mighty in the books second part but that never really came. After a fit of miffed stubbornness because his twins succeeded in becoming the crown prince he runs away into the forrest like the brat. There in the ruins of an abandoned temple he meets shy, innocent Mathias who took refugee from the cruelness of the towns people whoe believed his visions of their type of death a curse.

That meeting changed Evander quite quickly. In part one he enjoyed place life as a matter of course and next he is perfectly content with a blanket as bedding and a diet of mushrooms and onions. No suffering, no real regret, no catharsis and that also didn't change much after he got information about what was going on in the real world, about the death of his father or his twin becoming more tyrant than king but of course eventually he had to go back, face his brother and -which is surely no spoiler- becomes the king he was always made to be while his former victims either proofed themselves worth of his bad actions or forgave him by becoming faithful employees.

Guess I better don't start now on rambling about the greek gods in a non-greek fantasy. I got it that using gods as such isn't the easiest in this kind of fantasy fairytale and maybe I wouldn't have been that irritated if they only got other names.

**Grammar**

Evander, or Royal Prick, how I called him in the first pages, at start was a spoiled and arrogant young prince. Barely 18(well he turns 18 after meeting Matthias), he is handsome and used on having all he wants, men and women included. He takes what he wants without caring about the other feelings and he thinks of himself as one of the best warriors of the realm.
We meet him in the first pages and is right there that we see his selfish character. He has sex with a valet and also if he prepares the guy, he only cares about his pleasure. When he is done, he tells the other boy to leave and doesn't care that he still didn't come.Luckily this is the only sexual scene with other people and all happens before he meets Matthias, so I didn't care. I pitied a bit the valet, but he knew Evander's character and he could have guessed his selfishness and later that dude shows his true self anyway, and my pity for him vanished.
Matthias is 18, turning 19 in a few months. He is naive and kind, a gentle soul, that was born with the mark of a demon, and for this reason is feared by others and avoided, bcs they thinks he is cursed and who touches him dies. He is used on being alone, he is living in the woods since he was 14. His best friends are the animals he met in the forest and also if he is always alone, he is happy. Matthias is beautiful, with golden hair and violet/grey eyes, he isn't a demon, like the other people think, but the son of a god(Apollo) and a goddess(Sorteria), something that will be revealed only in the last chapters.
When our guys meet for the first time, Matthias and Evander can't stop bickering. The prince who decided to leave his castle after losing his right to take the throne for an error he made taking a decision, wants to leave his old life behind and forget about that traitor he has for a brother, the one who counseled him wrong and was the real cause of his downfall and who is now going to be the next king. Damn I hated Lycos, Evander's twin brother, he was a piece of shit, and I wanted to kill him way before I saw what he was going to do to the cute and sweet Matthias...(he attempted raping him, but luckily he doesnt do it in the end, he is able only to steal a forcefull kiss)

Evander is handsome and he knows it, his dark hair and blue eyes always got him what he wanted, but now things are different.
Matthias doesn't like to be touched and for the first time in his life, this is the only thing that Evander really desires. With his previous lovers, he never wanted to kiss them or face them while having sex and most importantly he never cared if they came. But now he wants Matthias like he never did before with other lovers and he understands that the other boy has stolen his heart.
He is his first love and he wants to treasure him, and to keep him for himself. He knows that Matthias has never had sex and when the 2 of them finally do it, Evander is another person, or maybe he is finally showing his true personality. He always thought that he was without an heart (dunno why, bcs he wasn't a bad person, just a really spoiled brat), but now he knows that he was wrong. He takes Matthias as if he is the most precious thing he has in the world and takes his time with him. That scene was really romantic.
From that moment our boys never get separated. They can't be apart and they don't want. Where Evander goes Matthias follows, bcs like our sweet boy says, he loves his prince more than the woods. Matthias still has his visions and while some are good, others are really bad and scare him. Matty knows that they will all become real soon and in one of them he saw Evander die.

Later we will find out that he was right. Lycos will try to kill Matthias and Evander will protect him with his body, getting badly hurt. He is dying and this episode is what awakes Matthias' powers. He saves Evander and protects him. More things happen, and in one of the scenes we meet Matthias' parents. Apollo takes care of Lycos, banishing him for eternity in a remote island, and Evander becomes king.
Apollo and Sorteria want to take Matthias with them back to Olimpo, but our boy refuses bcs he can't live without Evander and also if now he knows that he is immortal, he still wants to be with Evander till the end of the prince (now king) mortal life. I was already starting to cry bcs In the end Evander was going to die....but the authors, decided to give us a forever kind of HEA. (Thank the Gods)

We find out that when our boys where in the woods and had found that fountain, where Evander had decided to drink its water, they had done something special without knowing. Drinking that water in the presence of a god, makes the one drinking it, immortal. Evander is immortal and they can be together forever and rule the kingdom together. (I would get bored of ruling after some years, but at least they can be together, and this is what really matters)

This book was nice, I found myself wishing it had more pages. And also if at start Evander wasn't my favourite, then I started to change my mind and maybe, I loved Matthias more(I could I not?), but the prince took a piece of my heart too.

Together they were perfect and sweet, for the first time in his life Evander found out what blushing meant. He was jealous, possessive and protective. When his brother tried to make him angry to make him lose focus during their battle, and lied about raping Matthias(something that luckily he didn't have the time to do, thanks to Sorteria who helped Evander escape from the dungeons), we see Evander pain and if the fact that he was in love with Matty wasn't clear for some readers before, now was pretty obvious.

The authors went full ALL IN with the HEA and also if it seemed to good to be true, it still was a fantasy book, so who cares? I loved it, so damn fluffy.

This book is brilliantly written, gripping and filled with emotion and drama, but is much darker than I was anticipating. There's a bit of sadness and loss in this story but also love and overcoming hate. A really fascinating read that I couldn't put down.

An amazing story of Once upon a time...the best time spent..I couldn't put it down. Matty is bright and shiny. So full of innocence and wonder...he will capture your heart just as he has with Evander. Once a spoils Prince learns what it's like to love beyond himself and care fore the others around him. A perfect fairy tale!!

My thoughts with lots of spoilers, so be aware!
Since I was a little boy, I loved fairy tales. I still remember my father reading bedtime stories and it was my favorite thing of the day.
Even nowadays I still like those stories a lot. Maybe it's escaping reality, even if you can hardly speak about reality when reading any gay romance ;-)
When I saw a review of this from some Goodreads friends, I knew I had to read it too, and I was not disappointed.
But I must say that I also was not completely happy.
The story is about Evander, a young spoiled prince who leaves his family because his father decides he is not fit to become king. Lycos, his brother betrayed him and will be the next king instead.
In the woods, Evander meets Mathias, who fled society because he has visions of people dying and thinks he is cursed.
The way those two find together and fall in love is beautiful, Evander transforms from major asshole to loveable friend and partner.
However, once they return to society the story became much less likely and also less likable.
Lycos became king in the meantime by killing his father and turns out to be a major tyrant, so Evander just walks to the castle with Mathias by his side to confront him. Has there ever been a more stupid plan in the history of fairy tales? I really doubt it. Then the story turns really paranormal, which was okay but a little too much too sudden. For my liking these events and developments should have evolved slower, at least a few more hints should have been given at the beginning, or while the story evolved.
The way it was handled, it felt like a simple solution for an otherwise too difficult situation.
Maybe I am complaining a little too much because actually, I liked reading the story, but with all the things that didn't make sense for me, I would rate it 3.5 stars, just about average and I am not completely sure, I would recommend it.

I actually hadn’t planned on reading this just yet, but somehow I accidently opened it and just started reading. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it. There were a few bits of unnecessary cruelty but overall I liked Evander’s journey from complete unlikable a-hole to the compassionate true leader he became. Matthias was pure joy and he and Evander were just so good together.
While the writing was well done (just a few typos) and the plot was solid, there were still some elements that were just odd. As another review pointed out, the characters and their lifestyle was very medieval but overlayed with the Greek gods. Even their currency, the drachma, was Greek. Even though we knew our MCs would get their HEA, it still felt weird when the fact surrounding Mathias were revealed.

This is a feel good story, with a dash of disney and fairy-tales, and it's really good.

P.S. The Deities here are also... nicer than some of the ones I read. xD

P.P.S. Sorry for the short review, and no I didn't say that just because. I have a fever right now I still finished it, that's how good it is. The stars is because of the disney-e feel... I kinda didn't like it. xD

Finding true love

Nicky James has written a beautiful story. Prince Evander learns he is not the king the people need and he casts himself out of the kingdom. He encounters Mathius, a young man who is cursed with the sight of future deaths. He is an outcast who lives in an abandoned temple. Together they find that they belong together. ⚘⚘⚘

DISCLOSURE: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review..... Evander is a pampered and a bit arrogant Prince. Mathias is a shy loner that people call evil. Both are cast out by the families that should care for them. Meeting at a ruined temple Mathias calls home, they slowly forge a friendship and wonder why a large Crow seems to follow them everywhere. As time goes on secrets are revealed and bonds are both strengthened and broken. Dramatic and unexpected twist woven in make this a page turner.
I love a good historical based drama and this book gives me my fix! Well written, and the characters are believable and easy to relate too. I have read other books by each of these authors. Them writing together is a great duo with great results. I am hoping for a book 2!!

Wow... What a beautifully written story! It was amazing from the start. I cried a lot reading this, so many emotions going through me, so good. I loved Mathias from the start, Evander... I so did not like at beginning, no way! But I finally started to love him when met Mathias b/c he changed for the good:) I was so proud of him! There were a few surprising twists in there I did not expect & I was like "no, this can't happen, it's a fairytale & needs a HEA"! Then thank you so much things changed for the better ;) I loved this book! A Must Read!
