About the author

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

His writings includes over 120 short stories, 10 novelettes, 5 novels, 3 historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews. Krishnamurthy’s witty, incisive comments on politics, literature, music and other forms of art were looked forward to with unceasing interest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of ‘Kalki’, ‘Ra. Ki’, ‘Tamil Theni’, ‘Karnatakam’ and so on.

The success that Krishnamurthy attained in the realm of historical fiction is phenomenal. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels. Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

A banyan tree inspires awe - be it in its own majestic size or in the pruned bonsai form. Authors like Kalki R. Krishnamurthy are like banyan trees in the Indian literary scene. I was quite surprised that a genius mind that churned out grand classics like 'Ponniyin Selvan' (The Son of Ponni) and 'Sivakamiyin Sabatham' (The Vow of Sivakami), spanning a thousand pages or even more, could write such a crisp and pocket-sized novel, in no way second to those grand works in terms of quality or fun.

This novella is a comic thriller that tells the story of Sengoda Koundar, who has earned some money through hard work and is so obsessed about it. Sempavalavalli is his lady love. Just as they express their love for one another and plan to get married, there arrives Kumari Pankaja, charming and suave, making Sengodan's mind waver a bit. But accompanying Pankaja are two of her relatives, who seem to be having nefarious intentions. What were their intentions? Did Sengoda Koundar fall prey to their wiles? Did he marry his lady love? What happened to his money? This book answers all these questions in typical Kalki style - fluid, quick-paced, interesting and entertaining.

A nice little appetizer ahead of all the serious reads planned for this year!

Amazing book.

The narrator of this audiobook did a wonderful job. It was so good. The plot, the characters and the narration was all exceptional so that i did not want to stop. Sembavalavalli and sengoodan are one of my favourite couple now.

சேலத்தில் இருந்து நாமக்கல் செல்லும் வழியில் இந்தப் பொய்மான் கரடு என்று சொல்லப்படும் கரிய பெரிய பாறை இருப்பதாக நூலில் கூறப்படுகிறது. அப்படி ஒரு பாறை உண்மையில் இருக்கிறதா அல்லது கதைக்காகச் சொல்லப்பட்டதா. மெய்யாகவே பொய்மான் கரடு என்று ஒன்று உள்ளதா அல்லது அது வெறும் பொய்யோ புனை சுருட்டோ நானறியேன். பொய்யான போதிலும் (அ) மெய்யாகவே இருப்பினும் அதைச் சென்று காணும் நிலையில் இன்று நாமொருவரும் இல்லை.

நூலின் முன்னுரையில் இருந்து ஒரு பகுதி, இதோ

"நம் ஒவ்வொருவருடைய வாழ்க்கையிலும் சில சமயம் பொய்மான்கள் எதிர்ப்படுகின்றன. அந்தச் சமயத்துக்கு அவை உண்மையாகவே தோன்றுகின்றன. அந்தப் பொய் மான்களைத் துரத்திக்கொண்டு நாம் ஒடுகிறோம். துரத்திப் போகும்போது அம்மம்மா, எத்தனை பரபரப்பு! எவ்வளவு மனக்கிளர்ச்சி! என்ன தீவிர உண்ர்ச்சி! ஆனால் எவ்வளவு தூரம் தேடிப் போனாலும் பொய்மான் வெறும் மாயத் தோற்றந்தான் என்பதை கடைசியில் உணர்கிறோம். ஏமாற்றம் அடைகிறோம்."

இக்கதையிலும் அப்படி இரண்டு மான்கள் இடம்பெறுகின்றன. மெய் மான் இருக்கப் பொய் மானை நாடிச் சென்றவன் கதையே பொய்மான் கரடு.

இக்கதையில் நிகழ்வது போல, நம் கையில் இருக்கும் மெய் மானின் அருமையை நாம் உணரச் சில நேரம் ஒரு பொய் மானால் ஏமாற்றப்பட வேண்டியுள்ளது. எந்த ஒரு பொருளும் கையில் இருக்கும் போது அதன் அருமை உணரப்படமாட்டாது. அது புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டாலும் அதில் வியப்பொன்றும் இல்லை. அதை இழந்த பிறகே அதன் அருமை உணரப்படும். மனம் சில நேரம், கை அருகில் இருக்கும் மெய் மானை விட்டு, கைக்கெட்டாத பொய் மானை நாடும். அதன் பின்னே ஓடி அலைந்து, அதன் மாயத் தோற்றத்தால் அலைக்கழிக்கப்பட்டு, அது பொய்யென்ற மெய்யைக் கண்டறியும் போது மனம் மெய் மானைக் காண ஏங்கும். அதுவரை மெய் மான் காத்திருக்குமா அல்லது கடந்து செல்லுமா என்பதை யாரறிவார். காலமே விடை சொல்லும். அவ்விடையில் உண்மை மட்டுமே இருக்கும் இரக்கம் இருக்காது. காலத்திடம் இரக்கத்தை எதிர்பார்ப்பது, கானல் நீரைக் கையால் தொட எண்ணுவது போலாகும். காலம் தாழ்த்தாமல் கையில் இருப்பவற்றைக் கொண்டாடி இன்புற்று வாழவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணமே எழுந்தது கதையின் முடிவில்.

இப்படியும் ஒரு த்ரில்லர் எழுதலாம் என்று காட்டுவதற்காகவே எழுதப்பட்ட கதை போல உள்ளது 'பொய்மான் கரடு'.

எப்போதும் பெரிய கதைகள் தரும் கல்கி அவர்கள் இங்கு அளவை குறைத்த போதும் வேகத்தை குறைக்கவில்லை.

வேகமான கதைநடை. கிளைமாக்ஸ் ட்விஸ்ட். இந்த இரண்டும் இக்கதையின் சிறப்பம்சம்.

Awesome ending , twisted

Like the story very much at the end last few parts gives more interesting to the story.. very well written.. in between kalki describe night in wonderful way that is kalki's trademark.. overall good story to read...

"மழையும் மரங்களும் அதிகமில்லாத புன்செய்க்காடுகளில் மாலை நேரம் எப்போதுமே மனோரம்மியமாயிருக்கும். அதிலும் முன்நேர நிலாக் காலமாயிருந்தால் சொல்லவே வேண்டியதில்லை. இந்த உலகமே சொர்க்கத்துக்கு ஈடாகிவிடும். செங்கோடக் கவுண்டன் தன் குடிசையை அடுத்துப் போட்டிருந்த வைக்கோற் கட்டின் மீது உட்கார்ந்திருந்தான். வானத்து வைரச் சுடர்களுக்கு மத்தியில் வெள்ளிப் படகு மிதந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. பச்சைச் சோளப் பயிரின் மீதும் தென்னங்குருத்துக்களின் மீதும் நிலவின் கிரணங்கள் விழுந்து தகத்தகாமயமாய்ச் செய்தன. குயில்கள் முறை வைத்துப் பல்லவி பாடின. குடிசைக்குள்ளேயிருந்து அடுப்பில் வெந்த வெங்காயக் குழம்பின் மணம் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தது."

Classic novel! Unexpected twist in the climax. Taken me back to the time of this story. Few people think that this story looks outdated for 2000s but well crafted novels like this are beyond time and it brings the experience of time traveling to the past to see the characters in real. One can easily imagine the facial expressions of each character by reading the conversations happening between them and this is where the power of Kalki's pen and dialogues resides.

Want to visit this beautiful place: Poimaan Karadu while traveling to Salem. Luckily got a chance to watch an Youtube video where they had a picture of Sengoda Goundan's farm.

Must read! My mind is still wandering in Poimaan Karadu and Sengodan's evergreen farm :)

ராஜா காலத்து கதையானாலும் சாதாரண மக்கள் பற்றிய கதையானாலும் ஒரு திரைப்படத்தை பார்த்த அனுபவத்தைக் கல்கியின் எழுத்துக்கள் மறக்காமல் ஏற்படுத்திவிடுகின்றன. 2 அல்லது 3 மணிநேரத்தில் வாசித்து விடக்கூடிய குறுநாவல். திரில்லர் வகையைச் சேர்ந்தது. இலகுவாக வாசிக்க விருப்பப்படும்போதோ அல்லது கடினமான புத்தக வாசிப்புக்கு இடையிலோ இப்புத்தகத்தைத் தாராளமாய் வாசிக்கலாம். எளிய நடை. Absolute page turner. கடைசி அத்தியாயத்தில் வந்த ட்விஸ்ட் எதிர்பாராத ஒன்று.

சேலத்தில் உள்ள ஒரு ஊரில், ஒரு பாறையின் பொந்தில் மான் நிற்பது போன்ற உருவம் தெரியுமாம்.
அது நிழல்கள் மூலம் அமைந்த பொய்யான தோற்றம். அதனால் அந்தப் பாறைக்கு பொய்மான் கரடு என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்த மாயமானை நேரில் யாராவது கண்டிருக்கிறீர்களா?

படிக்க ஆரம்பித்த ஓரே நாளில் முடித்த short and sweet நாவல் இது . எழுத்தாளர் மனதில் தோன்றும் ஒரு விஷயத்தை எவ்ளவுக்கு எவ்வளவு எளிமையாக வழங்க முடியுமோ அவ்வளவுக்கு அது அற்புதமாக வாசகனை போய் சேரும் என்பதற்கான எடுத்துக்காட்டு இந்த புத்தகம் . பைசாசம் படித்து விட்டு இந்த புத்தகம் படிப்பதால் பைசாசத்திற்கு inspiration இதுவாகா தான் இருக்கும் என்று மனதில் எண்ணம் தானாக தோன்றுகிறது . ஒரு கொலை கேஸில் யாரும் எதிர்ப்பார்க்காத ஒரு ட்விஸ்ட் எதிர்ப்பார்பவர்கள் படிக்க கூடிய நாவலிது .

Fun book! First thriller I've read in Tamil. I couldn't anticipate some of the twists, which made it fun to read (listen to). Deepika Arun did a fantastic job with the narration. There was one scene (where one of the characters tries to wear a shirt in a hurry) where I genuinely laughed out loud. I loved Semba, she is awesome, super resourceful. Would love to read more such stories.

Great murder mystery novel by Mr.Kalki in Namakkal backdrop. Twist at the end was awesome the dialect used are very relatable. I recommend this for anyone who loves short romance mystery novel.
