Voices of Wrestling's NJPW 2016 Year in Review is a detailed look at New Japan Pro Wrestling in 2016.
This massive book features profiles of every wrestler and tag that played a significant role in the company's year, longform essays from regular Voices of Wrestling columnists and guests, detailed statistics and biographical information for each wrestler as well as a review of every 2016 NJPW show. Additional sections include title histories, tournament recaps and much more.
I got this as something to read to familiarise myself with NJPW after having been converted by the best wrestling match I've ever watched. Okada vs Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 11 (yes i'm one of those people).
I'll say this about this book, apart from a cool, but far too small, articles section at the front of the book not enough of the rest of it held my attention without having to grin and bear it. It's definitely for hardcore NJPW fans. The section that seems to take up the most space is the reviews of every NJPW show from 2016. It's just a bit much for someone new to it all. I did enjoy maybe a third of the wrestler profiles as well, but by the time I got to the end of this book, the statistics section full of dry facts, my eyes were glazing over.
I'll stick to the articles on their website next time i think, or Lion's Pride a book about the history of NJPW.
3.5 stars. This was solid but not quite as good as previous years. Really could use a few more editing passes. Major events are missing from the show review section. The essays were some of the best ever though.
