495 books148 followersI was born in Nottinghamshire, England, but I didn't live there for very long. The family moved to West Yorkshire when I was just eighteen months old and so I have always regarded Yorkshire as my home. I grew up there as the middle child in a family of five—all girls—in a home where books were vitally important and I read anything I could get my hands on.
Even before I could write I was making up stories. My mother tells the story of me recounting the tale of the Three Little Raindrops — Drippy, Droppy and Droopy to my two younger sisters when I was four. I can't remember a time when I wasn't scribbling away at something, and I wrote my first 'book' when I was eleven, an adventure story, most of it in secret in lessons at school—particularly maths lessons, which I hated.
But everyone, particularly teachers and my parents, told me that I would never make a living as a writer, and I should work towards a more secure career. So I decided instead that if I couldn't write books, I could at least work with them and so I settled for becoming a librarian. On leaving school, I went to the University College of Wales Aberystwyth where I studied English and Librarianship for my degree.
More importantly, university was also where I met my husband who was also studying English there. We married and moved back north, eventually settling in Lincolnshire. Here I worked as a children's librarian until I left work when my son was born.
After three years of being a full-time housewife and mother, I was ready for a new challenge, but needed something I could do at home, and so I turned to my old love of writing. My first attempts at novels were written on the kitchen table, often late into the night when my son was asleep or during a few snatched hours when he was out at nursery school.
The first two novels sent off to Harlequin Mills & Boon were rejected, but the third attempt was successful. I can still remember the moment that a letter arrived instead of the rejection slip I had been dreading. I think I must have read it over and over at least a hundred times before the reality of what it said sank in, and for days I kept checking it just to make sure I wasn't dreaming. In 1984, THE CHALK LINE was published just in time to be one of my best Christmas presents ever.
Fitting in hobbies around working and being a wife and mother can be difficult, but I always find time to read. I love all sorts of fiction, especially Romance, obviously. I also enjoy historical novels, detective fiction and long, absorbing biographies about fascinating people and I can spend hours in bookshops just browsing. I enjoy knitting and embroidery, but I rarely get time to do either now that I'm a full-time writer. I also love looking round antique fairs or junk shops, hoping to add to my collection of Victorian embroidery. During my working hours my four cats, all adopted from the RSPCA, usually keep me company in my study, though they have to be dissuaded from sitting on the piles of papers that they are convinced are there just for them.
I love to travel and visit new places, especially places with an interesting history, and I always enjoy visiting old castles or stately homes and imagining how the people who used to live there spent their days.
I'm often asked if I'm a romantic sort of person because I specialise in writing Romances. Well, if being romantic means caring about other people enough to make that extra special effort, then yes, I am. Romance is about making the important people in your life feel valued and letting them know that you care. But I also write about relationships and the difficulties people sometimes have in understanding each other, or expressing affection, or overcoming problems.

The hero Carlos and the heroine Martha are both running away something - Martha from her wedding after discovering her fiancé cheating, and Carlos from the shock and hurt of finding out the truth of his parentage. They meet when Carlos finds Martha out walking in the rain, still in all her wedding finery, and stops to help her. There is an immediate spark between them, which neither of them truly understands, but each needing comfort they succumb to the desire between them. However, afterwards Carlos is plagued by doubts and Martha leaves having her confidence crushed for the second time that day, wanting never to see Carlos again. Four months later, she is going back on that vow and is at Carlos's family home waiting for him to arrive so she can tell him that she is pregnant, not knowing how he might react.
This is a very passionate and intense book, and I really enjoyed reading it. The hero is very appealing; he is perfectly alpha yet also kind. The heroine is also a great character - I liked her spirit. There is lots of chemistry between these two, and it is brilliant portrayed by the author.
The story takes place over four months, but the hero and heroine probably only spend twenty-ish hours together - all of it is brilliantly written, but I had a hard time believing in the final declarations of love. However, Kate Walker's wonderful storytelling makes it work, and it is a fantastic story.
Overall, this is a charming and sizzling book, definitely worth a read!

Sooo... I’m a huge Supernatural fan and I know that if you see a woman in white walking a lonely road on a dark, stormy night, you’re gonna need salt and holy water! Sam and Dean have taught me well!
The beginning of this book had me wishing that Carlos Diablo, the H, had this very important knowledge. He’s on his motorcycle, on a lonely road on a dark and stormy night when he comes across a very pale woman in white. My advice to him was to speed up and keep going. But he didn’t listen and he stopped and found a runaway bride.
Miss Jones was scheduled to be married that day, when she found her groom banging her chief bridesmaid in their wedding suite. While banging away, the bastard was telling the whore that he was only marrying the h for the money she won in the lottery. His plan - a marriage, force himself to consummate the marriage, and then a quickie divorce so he can get half. Scumbag deserved to get left at the alter.
So she ran, understandably, and ran right into the arms of the devil. He saved her. Gave her one hot experience, then told her it was a mistake and left. This girl was having a baaad day! After he left, she walked away.
Four months later, they meet again in Argentina at his grandfather’s estancia. He’s not happy to see her there. Thinks she’s after his money. He recently learned some stuff about his family and was disinherited by dear old granddad. He was hoping that the old man tracked him down for a reconciliation, but that wasn’t why.
His one night stand was living there, and she had news to share. She’s pregnant with his child. She was a virgin when they first met. He was her first but was pissed cause he doesn’t do virgins. Apparently virgins cling and demand HEA’s.
They have lots of one sided conversation where they don’t really say what they mean. It all goes round in a circle until, while riding out one morning, the clarity of the air helped the devil’s mind open to the possibility that maybeeee what the h is looking for is L.O.V.E.
Once that was realized, everything else fell into place and voila! Everyone is happy. Except old grandad. He’s old and sick and his disinherited not-grandson who he kicked out has refused to inherit the old man’s worldly goods. Cause he no longer needs it. He’s found L.O.V.E!
I don’t know how I feel about this book. I wanted to fall into it and love it, but I didn’t. It’s amusing. It’s OTT. And it’s an ok read, but I just didn’t L.O.V.E it.

Another story with such an OTT plot that can only be believed in the stories published by Mills and Boon…..but of course it works and one of the reasons for it is that it is written by the most incredible writer, Kate Walker, whose books I devour.
The Devil and Miss Jones begins with a really funny scene…picture this….a bride, fully dressed for the ceremony, discovers her groom in bed with the bridesmaid..doing and saying really BAD things…and this just an hour before everything is suppose to happen..and she does what any normal, rational woman would do…..runs away…finds herself on a lonely road, rain ruining her dress, shoes, veil and with no one coming to her rescue…when suddenly this gorgeous man …on a motorcycle stops to help her (he thought he was seeing the ghost..but nah!!!). So after much heart searching…on Miss Jone’s part, she gets on his bike and off they ride in the pouring rain to any destination that comes their way!! Now what an opening to the story…but wait…there is so much more….. yes they both experienced such a sizzling attraction…the chemistry is so hot it almost explodes so it is fair to say they find the nearest hotel and wow…they spend the most amazing time making hot hot love…and let me tell you…despite his anger at discovering she’s a virgin…after all, how was that possible he correctly asked himself, when she had been so hot for him and so responsive and how could she know so much about getting him turned on and wanting him to be inside her!!!! I agree with him…oh by the way…he tells her his name is Carlos Diablo (get the devil thing!!!) and she is Miss Jones….some really funny scenes during their lovemaking where they call each other Diablo and Miss Jones….I laughed quite a bit there.
So after a few hours of passion, he gets up and leaves her alone…she then decides that he only wants a one night stand…pleezzzz what else was it all about I asked!!!!!
Now cut to…4 months later…..Miss Jones has gone looking for Diablo in Argentina….she sneaked in his bag during the hours of passion and discovered his real name and where he lived…right…that happens often…sorry…it does…this is true fiction…if forget sometimes….so during the passionate moments, the condom broke…oh no…does this happen often??? Yes in these stories it does!!!! And discovers she is pregnant with his child…surprise surprise!!!! She has to let him know..it’s the most honorable thing to do after all.
Next she is now Diablo’s grandfather’s caregiver…yes all true. The grandfather who had been really mean to Diablo..oh yes his real name is Carlos Ortega….and hers is actually Martha Jones …so she told the truth about her name but not him!!! Okay.
Anyway, Carlos is summoned by his grandfather and what a shock….the girl for the one night stand is suddenly there, in his home!!!! Shocked. Is she after his grandfather’s money????? He does not trust her. Did he ever think about her during those four months…oh yes…he tells her at the end he did!!!!! It’s fiction guys…it happens here…..so after all the misunderstandings, both realize how much they love each other and go off into the sunset to have their very own HEA.
I know it sounds ridiculous ….but you know it was quite a fun and good read. Two people meeting under the most unbelievable circumstances…both running way from something in their lives, who meet their true soul mate.
And really that is why I read these books…because despite what seems so improbable becomes so real and for that moment you are actually engaging with the characters and want them to find each other whatever the costs or obstacles.
Kate Walker is one of my favorite authors and I can honestly say that I have never disliked any of her books

Imagine driving around trying to escape a life of demons and suddenly out pops a bride in full wedding attire! Whoa right ! That is the opening scene of the brilliant read from Kate Walker. And you know when a book has such a awesome opening scene your definitely in for a fantastic book all the way.
And what a book this was indeed. The author took me on a journey of love,self discovery,passion and romance. I loved how the author created such a almost magical world for the characters to unfold in for me the reader. We see the sexy and somewhat mysterious Carlos Diablo (I know what your thinking and yes Diablo means devil but trust me on this you will be more than pleasantly surprised when you learn this man's true nature,no devil at all )learn a valuable lesson in life and at the same time he leans to escape his demons that he has been running from. I simply loved how the author unveiled his develish clock !
Then there is Martha the run-a-way bride ,she was such a fabulous character ! Fiesty in her own right but at the same time scared half to death of being a single mother. I loved how the author showed me that Martha was not who she really seemed ,sounds intriguing ,you bet ,very nice twist Mrs. Walker !
I have always loved Kate Walker books and I have never been disappointed by her work and this time I was even more amazed than before for she completely took my breath away with this fabulous book ! Well done !

As always with this author the book contains too much inner dialogue, metaphors etc and not enough real dialogue. Also the heroine never tells the hero she loves him. What kind of romance is this?

It gave what it promised... but I'm not sure I wanted what it promised.
I found this book buried somewhere deep in a pre-loved books shelf at a fair. I'd heard a few things about Mills & Boon books (aka Harlequin — I have NO idea why they happen to have two names 🤷🏻♂️), and was intrigued to read a 183 paged romance after having read rom-coms that span to over 600 pages. I needed a reference for comparison.
It was by far one of the most blatant insta-lust books I've read. Two complete strangers share one hot, steamy, passionate night and disappear out of each other's lives almost immediately afterwards (because of the silliest reason possible). And then a few months later the girl finds out she's pregnant and runs off to find this man.
Cue Exile (ft. Bon Iver) by Taylor Swift —

And I didn't like the ending🎵
None of us are strangers to this overused plot but I'll have to admit, yet again — the book gave what it promised. Passion, spice, hot mcs, and mysterious/troubled pasts. I'm surprised how the novel actually managed to make sense with all those backstories.. and maybe that's what 180 pages can really do.
I was shocked to even find this book on goodreads tbh 😝. But I think there are better books out there, even 180 paged erotica.

I liked the ghostly beginnings of this book. It was a nice story. In the second half, Carlos was a lottle too suspicious for long. Overall, it was pretty good.

Oh Kate, when Diego was driving his motorbike in the first few paragraphs I had hope for the book, but honestly, that hope started to diminsh quite rapidly and my suspension of disbelief started to corrode quite quickly afterwards.
Yes, I should have guessed from the "powerful motorbike" without any qualifications, but let me give you a few pointers.
Paniers and top boxes on motorbikes are essential to carry anything, unless you're carrying stuff in a backpack, now seeing as she was able to snuggle up to him, this suggests no backpack. Some big expensive bikes have built in panniers. He has clothing with him and he didn't offer her it? Bad biker, no cookie. Waterproof leggings would have gone on quite easily on her exposed legs and would have afforded her some sort of protection.
He gave her his helmet, any biker would tell you that you'd get away, just about, with going to the next village or town doing this and about then the cops would be all over you like a rash, not debating stopping, you'd stop. Even if the bike is a rental, even if you have enough money to do this, the fines are huge, the cops will lecture you for a while about stupidity.
Bikers have wet weather gear in Ireland and England. If they don't they stop. Biking in the wet is a miserable, nasty experience and driving rain, actually hurts through jeans, and jeans don't dry all that quickly. Your hero would have ended up in the hotel damp through to the skin. Uncomfortable and chaffing in places that would make a shower a top priority, and getting out of the damp clothes an even bigger priority. You talked about a freezing fog and him giving his jacket to her would mean that if he continued driving through rain for a while, we're talking hypothermia if he's not careful.
While driving rain is pretty uncomfortable in jeans, and even, speaking as a regular motobike pillion, through kevlar jeans, and you'll feel heavy rain through the waterproofs, it would be sheer torture in stockings. Lets not get into some of the practicalities of small country roads and chippings and exposed legs and feet, that would be getting into the realm of serious nitpicking.
So, if I was on the back of a motorbike, in driving rain, in the remains of my wedding dress, and his jacket and his helmet (wasn't she lucky it fitted! More not over-nitpicking!) and no gloves, in damp cold weather with freezing fog in the afternoon, clinging on to a male who is now soaked through, I would be wondering where the nearest town was and once I got in would be plunging my hands into warm water, not being exhilirated and liking his warmth. He wouldn't be warm, he would be cold, miserable, shivery and grouchy.
See, this all happened in the first few pages. I read a few excerpts out to my husband and he was wondering why I kept going, I can only claim masocism. A strange hope that the story was going to improve and the fact that the book was only 184 pages long. The story stretched my credulity, it just didn't make me convinced that things were going to work between the two characters and I think that without the motorbike eyebrowraising events I would have been more charitable about the whole thing. It all felt rushed and short-storyish rather than full book and I would have felt cheated if I had paid for it rather than borrow it from the library.
Yes, I should have guessed from the "powerful motorbike" without any qualifications, but let me give you a few pointers.
Paniers and top boxes on motorbikes are essential to carry anything, unless you're carrying stuff in a backpack, now seeing as she was able to snuggle up to him, this suggests no backpack. Some big expensive bikes have built in panniers. He has clothing with him and he didn't offer her it? Bad biker, no cookie. Waterproof leggings would have gone on quite easily on her exposed legs and would have afforded her some sort of protection.
He gave her his helmet, any biker would tell you that you'd get away, just about, with going to the next village or town doing this and about then the cops would be all over you like a rash, not debating stopping, you'd stop. Even if the bike is a rental, even if you have enough money to do this, the fines are huge, the cops will lecture you for a while about stupidity.
Bikers have wet weather gear in Ireland and England. If they don't they stop. Biking in the wet is a miserable, nasty experience and driving rain, actually hurts through jeans, and jeans don't dry all that quickly. Your hero would have ended up in the hotel damp through to the skin. Uncomfortable and chaffing in places that would make a shower a top priority, and getting out of the damp clothes an even bigger priority. You talked about a freezing fog and him giving his jacket to her would mean that if he continued driving through rain for a while, we're talking hypothermia if he's not careful.
While driving rain is pretty uncomfortable in jeans, and even, speaking as a regular motobike pillion, through kevlar jeans, and you'll feel heavy rain through the waterproofs, it would be sheer torture in stockings. Lets not get into some of the practicalities of small country roads and chippings and exposed legs and feet, that would be getting into the realm of serious nitpicking.
So, if I was on the back of a motorbike, in driving rain, in the remains of my wedding dress, and his jacket and his helmet (wasn't she lucky it fitted! More not over-nitpicking!) and no gloves, in damp cold weather with freezing fog in the afternoon, clinging on to a male who is now soaked through, I would be wondering where the nearest town was and once I got in would be plunging my hands into warm water, not being exhilirated and liking his warmth. He wouldn't be warm, he would be cold, miserable, shivery and grouchy.
See, this all happened in the first few pages. I read a few excerpts out to my husband and he was wondering why I kept going, I can only claim masocism. A strange hope that the story was going to improve and the fact that the book was only 184 pages long. Any woman would be tempted by a Diablo on a motorcycle ready to take her away from her sad past and into an exciting new future. Miss Jones is no exception; she was ready to go with anyone willing to get her away from the drama that was her life so far. Luckily for her, Diablo is was the first passerby willing to take a chance on the runaway bride.
Carlos Ortega (Diablo) was the Latin flair that Miss Marta Jones needed. Diablo was a character I was immediately drawn to. While his good looks and bad boy attitude would entice any woman, it was really the mystery behind his eyes that intrigued me. I could tell from the very beginning there was more than what meets the eyes when it came to the mysterious man running away from his past life. I knew he wasn't the typical “bad guy” who would frighten old women in a dark alley. No, he was a man who's circumstances had changed and made him jaded. It made me want to learn more about him.
Miss Jones was not your typical runaway bride. She didn't get cold feet because things were moving too fast. No, she ran with cause, and refused to look back at not only her ex-fiancé but the life that had lead her to the man she never wanted to see again. I knew her ex’s actions had to have been bad for her to be willing to run to Diablo. Her recent and lengthier background really molded her to a strong independent woman. Even when faced with situations that would break many women she sticks her chin up and fought. This is an admirable quality that every heroine should have.
The beginning of the story was a bit slow for me. The characters seem to go back and forth for a while on whether to trust one another enough for Martha to leave the site of her wedding. Once she finally decides to take the plunge the plot shot forward. The story development became exciting and continuously moved along at a brisk and steady pace. All the twists and turns in the story really made the reading go smoothly and I zipped right through the middle and onward to the end of the book. Don't judge this little gem on how the tale starts because the author definitely came through for me with the rest of the story.
Anyone who is a romantic at heart or really enjoys a good romance story would enjoy The Devil and Miss Jones.

Take one virginal bride and one dark mysterious leather clad stranger at a cross roads in both their lives and you have magic. This is a good old fashioned romance of the nicest kind. Perhaps a little lightweight but with an endearing heroine and a suitably gorgeous hero it works rather well.
Martha Jones comes across as basically a very nice girl who has devoted her recent years to nursing her dying mother. Fate rewards her with a lottery win but unfortunately it also brings vultures, at least one in the form of Gavin, her loser, cheating husband to be. Which is how Miss Jones comes to be standing by the roadside when Carlos Diablo (Ortega) spots her on a rainy day in Northern England.
Diablo is still reeling from his own identity crisis and is unprepared for the impact of this damp bedraggled bride on his senses.
So the sizzling hot night ends up fizzling as both of them take stock of the results of their unruly passions.
Fast forward 4 months and Martha is on a quest to track down Diablo to update him on the results of the brief encounter.
Once again neither of them are prepared for what happens when they confront each other. Now with the added complication of Diablo's estranged grandfather and potential parenthood, things are bound to get messier before they get better.
I found myself captivated by the story and characters. I got just the right amount of moved and emotional on the downers so that when all the final revelations come out I found myself as blissfully happy as Martha. This is truly a feel good romance that has none of the edgy nuances that leave you not quite sure if the HEA is truly a lasting one.

Martha meets Carlos on the side of the road, in her wedding dress. He stops his motorcycle and after some adjustments they make their way to a hotel. Where she tells him, she was going to marry Gavin but he was screwing her maid of honor, so she ran out.
Carlos is infatuated with Martha instantly and when they are in the hotel he makes love with her and then walks out. Four months later, Carlos lands on his grandfathers land via helicopter and finds Martha there.
Background info?
Carlos isn't actually related to his grandfather by blood, his mother cheated on whom he thought with his biological father. He was cut out of his "grandfathers" will because of this.
Martha actually won seven million dollars in the lottery, so she doesn't need to cling to Carlos and she sure doesn't want his money.
After a whole lotta confusion, one pregnancy and one old man trying his best the book winds up being quite brilliant.

I don't know, but I seem to have missed much in this story.
Miss Martha Jones runs out on her cheating bridegroom moments before her wedding and runs off with Carlos 'Diablo' Ortega. Her one night stand ends with him walking out with the statement virgins are clingy and leaves her alone, and pregnant.
Of course, she had snooped and found out who he really was so was able to contact his grandfather, who tracked him down and brought him home. Martha tells Carlos she is pregnant, he wants to marry, she doesn't.
Thru the very few moments they actually talked, didn't have sex, she supposedly taught him all about love and family. Not sure where all that happened, but that's what he says.
Overall, the story was OK. Not too believable. Not very exciting.

This was a very enjoyable story. Not the most believable, but then even the most believable are not all that believable, so why sacrifice intensity? From the deserted, rain-soaked Northern country road where a bedraggled bride cries for a lift away from her failed life, to the glorious Argentinian horse ranch where the rejected hero has to choose what he really values in life, this novel brings a vividness of experience which outweighs the improbably contrived plot. Martha and Carlos feel for each other from the start, but it takes a whole book for them to trust each other—and to trust themselves.
I only just noticed that the name “Martha Jones” had already been taken, by Dr. Who. Odd, that.

I thought the story was cute. Yes a bit unbelievable but that is fantasy with romance. It could have been a five but the jump to heroine being at his grandfather was too big of leap. So she seemed stalkerish to me
