Bella our author was influenced by the writings of OSHO (OSHO’s meditation technique has been used by psychotherapists, medical doctors, teachers and other professionals around the world .) This book, set in southern India , follows the life of a young career woman ,Dweepa ,age 26 After losing the man she was in love with to her best friend she finds herself quite alone working as a graphic designer for a big company a big city. She is still deeply unhappy over losing her beloved to her best friend but she hides it under a fake smile. She has only been blindly following her religion without meaning of its observances and so gets no relief there . One day while visiting her Grand mother in a small town she is taken to the house of a Swami.

A God man is when the supreme being lives in a human body , Mirdad and Mikail Niamy, Jesus , The 10 sikh gurus , Kabir , Mira and Rabia , the RSSB gurus all thee are examles of Godmen or God women . Godmen work normal jobs and refuse to liveoff charity

While the fictional swami in this book is not a God man since he quit his job as librarian to become the resident swami who live on alms of his beneficiaries . He is no ordinary swmi either .If 99% of swami(as Deepa’s father points out in the book)are fake then 1% are real - This swami- is in the 1%!!! He can reach the minds of those who come to see him and he has a magnetic and calming effect on all those who come to see him and his advice is psychologically flawless . So at the very least he is like a great psychologist / spiritual advisor who is a perfect example of what he teaches . He speaks from the heart .His mind is free of anger and he is wise and his advise is exactly the same as Godmen give when asked such questions EXCEPT when he is asked how to meditate . A Godman would say meditation on THE HOLY (aka surat shabd yoga ) This swami’s technique is to think only positive thoughts especially when going to sleep because our thoughts anwishes are always granted soone or later . soto be happy we should be very careful only to think of that which will cause no unhappiness. This is an excellent book for those who don’t want to spend the minimum of 2.5 hours per day in mediation required by Surat Shabd yoga (www.rssb.org ) yet want to be freed from sadness and be happy in this world. (SSY is for merging in God and thus being freed from birth and death and dwelling in then highest bliss forever )

Deepa says “ . My dad says that out of 100 Swami‟s 98 of them are frauds. He was also interested in mysticism initially. But a fraud Swami took a huge amount of money from his friend and never returned. After that incident he lost faith in the Man God dramas.”

Deepa’s impression of the real swami :
An elderly gentleman in his mid 50‟s came from the other room. He had long grey beard which reached up to his chest….He welcomed us with smile. He looked at me. The look was so piercing. I felt that he was looking deep inside my soul. I felt nervous and scared.”
My comment : anyone who has “dies while living “ or “ I die daily “ as St Paul put it is able to temporarily leave his/her body and rising above the physical attain the ability to see peoples thoughts and eve ry nook and cranny of their history . So this swami was able to “look deep inside” and Deepa was “nervous and scared “ This is a very common reaction when going before such a soul for the first time – a feeling of nakedness or not being able to hide anything -hence embarrassing .
Then as is often the case the swami spoke out her thoughts “

Deepa’s reaction :
“I did not know how he read my mind. His eyes were fixed on me. I couldn‟t move. Somehow I felt paralyzed. I didn‟t know what to say. I stared at him…. I felt a connection between me and Swami. An invisible flow of energy was there. I felt a relief. My mind was relaxed.”
MY comment : after the panic of knowing you are exposed comes the relief of knowing that he loves you anyway and will fill you with his spiritual bliss meaning he accepts you as his own beloved child .
My next favorite part is where the meaning of NAMASTE is explained :
““We are not just body. Are we? Something beyond our tangible world is there in our body and around us. You can call it soul or divine presence or light or even God. Namaste simply means the divine presence in me bows to the divine presence in you. …From my heart I honor the divine presence in your body.”

Deepa starts to realize the difference being with a REALIZED teacher AS OPPSED to a mere book learned teacher she says :
“I have been a blind believer. “
My comment : too often when a religious congregation is merely going through themotion of the precibed practices withoutunderstanding the oBJECTIVE behindwhat they aredoing This is dead religion devoid of spiritual experience . as ST Paul put it : “ He has made us COMPETANT as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but OF THE SPIRIT ; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” so if we leave our meetings and prayers without making conscious contact with “the SPIRIT we are blind belivers and need a teacher is in touch with the spirit and can put us in touch or else we need to understand how these rituals are meant to bring contact with spirit and do them properly . WE must not be blind/dead followers but dwellers in the Spirit .
Nesxt comes pcychological advise since itis necessary to havea still mind to recieveteh spirit we need to get the agitating negative emotions out our minds .

The swami says :
“When you are angry, sad or depressed, don‟t hold it, just release it. But don‟t release it in front of others. You can go to your room, close the door, switch on the music system, turn up the volume, and then you can cry loud, beat the pillow, shout, howl, and jump and do whatsoever drama you want to do. But do it with your full heart. Then you will get tired eventually, you will become silent, sometimes you may fall asleep and when you wake up you will be fresh. You will have your positivity in and around you.
“Remember, a wise person moves through his unhappiness alone and whenever he is happy he shares it with everyone. The fool does the opposite. So it is up to you now.”
Now swami tells us to follow theninner yearnings of our soul not the propaganda of our rat race culture :
“Role models guide you, but unfortunately you copy them. You imitate their deeds which are very cheap. Remember, you are born original, do not die as a copy.”
I was being untrue to myself. –Follow your own heart –to thine own SELF be true . Break out of the societal mold and start following your own heart .March to the beat of a different drum . (For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. “Matthew 7:14 so we cant just blindly follow people’s example we have to learn to take our lead from “the still small voice” of our soul wihin urgng us to seek the spirit . Be indifferent to public opinion and go for spiritual gain .
WE must use out spiritual homing instincts and take reponsibilty for staying true to the pathto love and light .

The Swami says :
“You should not listen to anyone just because they are higher or elder to you. You should not follow scriptures, holy books, or anything unless and until you understand them from your own experience. Listen, EXPERIMENT, imbibe and then include it in your life if it PROVES right to you!”
(my comment: when we PROVE a theory by experimentation we have moved from blind followers to spiritual scientists LISTEN TO YOUR OWN HEART “always let your conscience be your guide” says Jiminy cricket then if it increases you cintact with spirit the experiment was successful if not discard it and try something else . )
Swami says :
“It is you who have to choose the path. There are 1000‟s of guides around you. But you can only know the truth in the end.”
“Remember, the best guide is always within you.”

“There may be some situation in your life where you don‟t know what to choose. At that time listen to your body, mind and soul, they will guide you. An unknown energy beyond the beyond will come to guide you only if your question is genuine.” This has happened to me. Whenever there was a critical moment, my instincts told me what to do. It was as if someone from the beyond was guiding me. So there is something beyond the beyond.

(MY Comment : this a universal experience if we but hold the question in our mind and see if our heart rises or sinks we will know which fork in the road to take)

Next swami talks about wish fulfillment:
Deepa : “Whatever you wish it will become true?”
“Yes. Whatever you wish it will become true!” Swami said.
Deepa“But I have wished so many things, not all came true”
“ everything depends on the intensity of the thought and also the environment in which you are living – if a strong presence is there and hen intensity of wishful thoughts is also 100%. everything will happened in a blink of a second.”
My comment : this is why are advised to go into the company of spiritually realized souls to pray and mediate because in that high energy environment our level of conscious is elevated sattva guna predominates and we can pray with deep onepointed attention and emotion . so the prayer is soon granted.
Like all mystics Swami then emphasis that our attitude is in our hands a positive attitude and we are happy – a negative attitude and we are unhappy. Since our thoughts are our choice our attitude which is merely the garden of our thoughts is also our choice . No one but us can plunder this garden . So the garden will yield happiness or unhappiness depending in what thoughts we plant there .
Deepa “Ok, the thoughts matter!”
Swami “Yes indeed it matters. That is why people keep on saying that have positive thoughts. But people want to be miserable. They will have negative thoughts always.” whatever thoughts you have in the end moment of night will affect your next morning and whatever thoughts you have in the beginning of your day will affect your entire day. Think wisely.”

The about Deepa’s deep unhappiness in losing her beloved to her best friend. Swami says :
“Love is the most beautiful thing in the world. You love him now also in a different way. You have a beautiful heart Deepa. Remember one thing a loving heart never demands love back. What matters is that, you are loving.” Swami said.
“There is a verse in Bhagavatgeetha. „Karmaneyvadhikarastheye Maphaleshukadhanchana‟. It means do your duty but never expect for any results. Good or bad, it doesn‟t matter. You are doing something with full heart. That is what matters. You love someone with your full heart, do not expect for his love or rejection. You just love. That is all. There is no problem and after all a loving heart is beautiful”
You love a person and you want him to love back. This is not love. This is like business. I give you something and I demand a return. Think about how your mom loves you. She never asks anything in return. She loves you and she is happy. You have set conditions for your happiness that is why you are sad. When you set conditions to be happy, it won‟t be fulfilled always. Then you feel sad. Just love for the sake of love. Never demand love. If you expect something, then you will be in misery.
“That is the beauty of love. You do not expect anything in return. You share happiness and love, just for the joy of it. Remember one thing, the day you love for no reason is the day you become matured. Whatever is happening in the world in the name of love is hocus pocus. If love happens because of a reason then the same love will disappear for another reason.” Swami said
“He is handsome not because of his looks. He is handsome because you love him. He may be the ugliest person to a man who hates him. Haven‟t you noticed when you love someone his or her beauty increase? Their speech, actions and whatever they do you won‟t find a fault in them. But if you hate a person no matter what good he does, you will always find a fault!”

Then Bella tells:
“I would have been carrying the pain throughout my life. I am happy that I finally opened my heart. Today is my best day; I have learned so many things today than any other day in my life. My heart became light, tensions were gone, my body and mind relaxed after a long time.”

The swami : outer and inner
Deepa to swami “there is something magnetic about you. Your presence makes me feel calm and happy. Ananda to Swami : You are like a magnet, a light. And because of this, so many people are interested to meet you. In your presence I feel so calm and peaceful.”
Deepa to Swami
How can you respond so spontaneously?”
Swami “When you are true to yourself, you become spontaneous. I don‟t hide anything or manipulate it. Whatever comes from my heart I say it…. It is that simple.”
Swami’s outer master
Deepa : How you became a Swami?
Swami Tells: “I(the swami as younger man) met my Master on the way back from my library job to my home. He asked me one simple question which changed my life. He asked me when will I stop reading and start living fully…after that moment everything was new to me. Every sunrise, sunset, even drinking a cup of tea became beautiful [full of life]

MY comment : every master MUST have a master . No one can learn this without the grace of his master.
INNER GURU
Deepa “So you are a Guru!”

Swami “I am no one‟s Guru. The Guru is always within yourself guiding you always. You can call it inner voice or light or guide or whatever you want. But you are too busy to listen. You miss your own treasure and starts collecting fake gems. Then you cry over your fake gems. You are only responsible for your fate.”

My note : Mirdad calls inner guru :The Spirit of Holy Understanding

“Swami, I have to work, do a lot of things. How can I listen to my inner voice when I am so busy?”

“You need to be patient. Meditation is a good technique for those who are so busy.
But if you are super busy, then focus on your work fully. If you are doing a task, give your 100% for it. Do not think of other tasks you need to complete a bit later. When you are eating, just eat; totally immerse yourself in this activity. See the texture of food; feel the taste, the taste differs when you chew it every time. Have you ever noticed it? Be in the moment. Then you will be able to hear the inner voice.” Swami said.

“Swami, I keep forgetting things. It is difficult to control my mind.”

“You do not have to control anything. Just be in the moment. It will be difficult initially but you will master it eventually. Be alert. Be true to yourself. This is my experience. This is my message. You do not need any Guru, the guru is within you.” Swami smiled.

Finally Deepa goes back to big city working guided by inner and outer gurus :
Deepa : Like a great saying „A thousand mile journey begins with a single step‟, my journey of beautiful life has started and continues…

you may wonder that I wrote this book and I am giving it a 5 star rating. Do not think that it is for promotional benefits or to increase the overall rating of the book. it is simply because when I wrote this something inside me also transformed with this book. it may be a tiny step to a long journey but it do matters. this book has helped to know more about myself and my emotions in a better way. I am glad that it is also helping you in some way.

Belli has presented the most essential elements needed for a beautiful life in a very simplistic manner that too in a short story,it is laudable. Many will take a lifetime to understand/realise/come across all these things!

"The reason why you are sad is that you have set conditions to be happy."

There is lot's of lines like this in this book, but this was my favorite one. I was not a reader of self-help books or anything like that. But this was actually a good book.

Small in size and rich in content.
