Kingdom of Askara #1

The Alpha King

Rate this book
alternate cover edition of ASIN B01N351BQS

The Kingdom of Askara has been torn apart by conflict for centuries, where humans exist as subservient beings to their werewolf masters. Legend says it will only be able to heal itself when an Alpha King and a pure omega are mated and crowned together, but a pure omega hasn’t been born in over a thousand years.

Luca is an Alpha-heir eagerly awaiting the choosing ceremony on his twenty-fifth birthday and the gifts granted by whichever omega he mates. His small pack is destitute due to the decisions of its ruling council, but being only an Alpha-heir, he has no authority to challenge them. Not until now—this moment he has waited a long time for.

Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. Then one day he came across a young Alpha-heir, attacked and dying of poison, and found out their fates were suddenly entwined.

Luca needs to take over his pack and save his people. He cannot afford to be distracted. But when he meets Kit, he develops abilities indicating he is not just a pack Alpha, but the King his world has needed for a thousand years.

Is Kit really the cause of Luca’s newfound power, the true mate he needs? How is it possible when the young man isn’t even a werewolf, and as merely a human, a mating is not only forbidden but for Kit, a sentence of death?

Bullets and Babies!

Victoria writes about guys loving other guys in between dodging bullets, kidnappers, and serial killers. She enjoys putting them through hell to get their happy ever after—it’s a character flaw she embraces.

She also believes that family is who you choose, that dogs are often much wiser than human beings, and that we’re steadily destroying the world we live in.

And if people read more books, they'd be much happier.

I have always loved Victoria Sue's books, all that I have read, and I was so not disappointed with this one. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

The book sucked me into its vortex right from the beginning, and I didn't manage to get out until the end was done, and I sure didn't come out unscathed. I have the battle scars, so to speak. ;)

Luca and Kit had me swooning over them both and their romance right from the moment they met. It was a delicious, delicate mating, and the way Luca cherished and adored Kit had me melt into a gooey chocolate sauce. I love this type of stories- hurt/comfort theme, mpreg, fated mates, and even though I don't really like insta-love, when it comes to werewolves, it's just a necessity usually, and I always get a sweet charm out of reading it in this context.

The powers Luca gets are actually worthy of a superhero, and even though it feels unreal, you get wrapped up nonetheless. The intrigue and hunger for the next part constantly stay with you, which led to me staying up waaaay past my bedtime and going to work after managing hardly 3 hours of sleep. Only I know how I was able to do my tasks without collapsing into a heap on the floor.

I was sorely upset after the Sirius Wolves series ended, as it had so much of myself invested into it. But I am cheerfully ecstatic to have a new series to latch on to. Mpreg is my achilles' heel, and I love to satisfy my cravings for it whenever I can.

Thank you, author, for yet another wonderful series and shifterverse for me to fall head over heels in love with! I was getting tired of constantly stalking your profile to see which new series you were going to start! ❤️💕💞

Reread July 2023

It’s been a while since I read this. Not sure I’d rate it the same now as then. I’m over miscommunication and pettiness in mate stories 🤷‍♀️

Reread November 2018

Still love this one. Still wanted to beat Luca a time or two because of a stupid misunderstanding but he still becomes a wonderful hero.

Reread September 2017

Reread this even though I just read it in July so I could BR with my pal Janie.

This is a great start to a new series and I can't wait to see what comes next. There are lots of interesting characters who will make great stories. I'm looking forward to more and to see where these two go.

There were many things I loved about this...the writing, the setting, the side characters, true mates, mpreg, action, betrayal.

There were a few things that rattled my nerves...misunderstandings. In the beginning there were a few between Kit and Luca...it was to be expected since they come from two totally different places. And then there was the BIG misunderstanding. For about 4-5 pages, my heart hurt and my gut clinched. I absolutely HATE when one character "overhears" something and assumes the worst without talking to the other one. But then Luca does something really, really stupid and hurtful. I wanted to throat punch him. I honestly don't think he groveled enough. Kit deserved a much better apology. After that, Luca treats him much better and how he deserves to be treated...as a treasured mate.

But despite all that, I truly enjoyed it and couldn't read it fast enough. It kept me engaged the whole time. This is my first book by Victoria Sue and it won't be my last.

I unexpectedly freaking loveeeeed this book. Generally, I like dystopian dynasty books because it gives you more freedom to write about what’s possible and what’s not. And Victoria Sue didn’t disappoint me with the setting of this world.

So, this is the kingdom of Askara where werewolves alphas are the rulers and the whole humankind is enslaved. And our hero Luca is an alpha heir who’s about to inherit alpha status at his 25th birthday and about to choose a mate for life so that he could achieve his full alpha powers. And he doesn’t like the way things run in his territory and determined to change the ways once he became the official alpha of his pack. And by fate, at this mate choosing ritual, he met again with the small, fragile human who had rescued him 7 years ago and told that he’d become the true alpha king of all of the kingdom of Askara. And my friend, the rest of this wonderful love story, you have to read yourself. 😉

I love both MCs but if I have to admit, I hated Luca at one point when he unfairly treated Kit and didn’t listen to the reasoning and explaining of his poor Omega. ABSOLUTELY adored Kit character. Selfless, caring, loving and faithful. And I loved the twist of mpreg. That was a beautifully written plot. I love how things turned out but I’d have loved to read a bit longer epilogue if that’s possible.

The only reason why I didn’t give this book 5 stars is because I feel like the novel is a bit short for that grand of a dystopian setting. Yes, it’s detailed and the storyline is wonderful but I wish I get a bit more. I’d like to see a bit more of the travel to the capital and a little peek into Kit and Luca’s future after the coronation.

I wish the other books in the series are as good as this one.

I love shifter books, but I don't read a lot of mpreg. This is because most of the ones I did read (or started),were a big dissapointment to me. This book however, I really enjoyed. The world-building and character development were very nicely done. I also really liked this authors writing style. And eventhough I like my smutt, this book wasn't one big sexfest, it had content and a great storyline. It did have knotting though....just so you know.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor knotting wolves

Luca is the Alpha-heir and he has reached the age (25) to choose his Omega. During the Choosing ceremony, he has to choose one of the Omega's that are presented, to mate with. This will give him him Alpha status and his powers. Problem is, that non of the Omega's presented interest him. Like all werewolves, Luca is bi-sexual, but he prefers men. There are only two male Omega's and they will probably be picked by the other Alpha's. Doesn't really matter anyway, because even the male Omega's don't hold his attention.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor well this sucks + gif

Luca knows he has to pick one, because if he doesn't he won't reach his Alpha status and he won't be able to make the changes he desperately wants to make. Everything changes though, when he catches the eyes of a human servant, who is about to be beaten. His whole world stops and he has only one thing on his mind....

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor mine + gif

I really loved Luca and Kit together, though I have to say, that Luca made some dumbass mistakes. I forgave him (after he groveled), because well....It's not every day that you become an Alpha King. Thankfully we also have Kit and he was really an amazing character. He was so strong and so loving.

The mpreg part was done very nicely, it was weird....but in a good way ;p

A lot of things happen in this story and I could say so much more....but I won't. I think that if you enjoy a good shifter story and you don't mind the mpreg, then you should just give it a go yourself. I myself would love another book about Sam and Asher, who were awesome side-characters in this book !!

Also a big "thank you" to Susan, who always recs the best books to me <3

Look out world, JL’s got her hands on some mpreg!

Oh, how I do love me some mpreg! It is my number one most favorite guilty pleasure. And when it’s mixed with Alpha/omega dynamics? Well, that just makes me want to roll around on my bed and kick my heels up into the air. I am actually giddy that I get to feed my addiction with all the cracky goodness that it provides. I don’t know if I can explain what it is about this sub-genre that gets me all in a lather but I’ll give it my best shot.

You see, for an A/o mpreg book to be truly delicious it has to be written a certain way. You have to have a strong, almost overbearing Alpha; one that will protect his omega. He has to be a leader and have a strong personality. This can vary a little, maybe he has a chip on his shoulder or starts off being a bit of an asshole. Maybe he’s a bit of a player or maybe he’s the strong, silent type. But one thing he definitely needs to be is big, as in tall, muscular and a bit intimidating. The omega needs to be smaller but only in size. Omegas can vary too. They can be bratty or mild mannered, possibly super smart or even the life of the party. But they are never weak. No pushovers allowed! The omega is there to temper the Alpha’s overbearing personality and bring out his gentle side. And when they get together is where the magic happens. The sex is usually rough with a lot of grabbing and biting and an overwhelming need to Claim His Mate. There’s so much passion and need and it usually burns my screen it’s so hot!

And this book had it in spades.

Luca is an Alpha-heir who’s finally come of age and can choose the omega who will be his mate. On Choosing Day he’s offered a wide variety of omegas to pick from but he can't help but feel disinterest. While all werewolves are bisexual for the most part, Luca prefers men and there are only two being offered and he’s sure they’ll be snatched up by the other Alpha-heirs before it’s his turn. But none of this matters when he looks into the eyes of a lowly human servant boy who is about to be punished for not being strong enough to do an impossible task.

This was a great story, well above par for the mpreg genre. All of the characters were engaging and I was so invested in what was happening that I couldn’t put the book down. The world building, though there were a few inconsistencies, was fascinating. I couldn’t tell if this was an AU or if it was earth set thousands of years into the future. Some passages in the story alluded to a future earth but there were two suns so I’m not really sure. That didn’t stop my enjoyment though. My disbelief was already suspended (hello… mpreg) so it didn’t take much for me to accept everything and skip merrily along through the story.

My only snag was the angst. I’m a Big Ole Chicken (bawk bawk) when it comes to relationship angst. I avoid books with the Big Misunderstanding caused by a Lack of Communication trope. It causes my stomach to knot up and I just wanna shout “Talk your shit out you morons!”. I had to drag my best pal Red into a buddy read so she could hold my hand through it. Seriously, I’m surprised I don’t break out in hives when I come across angst like that. But here, I can kind of understand why Luca did the things he did. He hasn’t had a positive role model in his life. His father is dead. When he was alive he let Luca’s raging bitch of a mother walk all over him. His brother betrayed him and now he’s become the first Alpha king in over a thousand years. He’s afraid he won’t be able to live up to the role he’s been thrust into and doesn’t have anyone he can seek out for advice. He has no clue what he’s doing so he makes mistakes – a lot of mistakes. Boy, does he make a shit ton of mistakes! He jumps to conclusions about Kit and nearly leads their relationship into disaster. Thank goodness for Kit, who now has a newly stitched pocket waiting for him. I adored Kit. His life has been absolute crap up until he meets Luca. He’s so strong! I would have cracked under all the pressure of everything that he’s been through. He’s vibrant and charming and has a great sense of humor. Once Luca got over his idiocy they were perfect for each other. They’re both great individually but together they can rule the world, quite literally.

Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of this story. It was a fast-paced adventure full of intrigue and red herrings that kept me guessing until the very end. The ending was a bit rushed though. I wish that it could have been expanded upon a little more. The climax of the story was a bit anticlimactic. It felt like a big part of it was skipped over and I needed to see what happened in more detail. I want to know more about this world and the lives of the people in it. Thankfully the author is planning a second book so hopefully I will get the answers I’m looking for. I recommend this to all those who love mpreg and are looking for a story with more meat to it. It was so much more than merely an mpreg story so if the blurb has caught your interest and mpreg doesn’t squick you out I say give it a chance. Who knows, you may end up becoming just as addicted as I am.

This was really good. This is an action packed shifter story with some sweet romantic ‘I cannot live without you’ moments. If I have one complaint it is that I felt the action sometimes took over, and I would have liked just a bit more peace and quiet, a little time to breathe.

Luca lives in a world where shifters rule and humans are being enslaved and abused. Luca is the Alpha-heir and as soon as his father steps down he will become the Alpha of his pack.

He is 18 when he is stabbed by his twin brother out of jealousy. He is left to die in the woods when he meets a 13 year old boy. This boy touches him and tells Luca he will be the Alpha King, not just an alpha. Luca is rescued when the boy gets help. But he is sad he never sees the boy again.

The legends say the Alpha King and his one true Omega mate have powers no one can comprehend. He is to rule the entire kingdom and bring peace.

When Luca is 25 he is awaiting his crowning ceremony together with a couple of other Alpha-heirs. Each get to pick an omega to mate with, but when Luca sees a young human man being whipped, he jumps up to stop the attacker. It is then that his powers show himself. When he looks into the boy’s eyes he knows it is the boy from 7 years ago.

When someone tries to hurt the boy, Luca just has to raise his arms and the entire room is destroyed. It looks like Luca might have gotten some new powers. Because of these new powers it is clear from the start he is the true Alpha King and that the boy, Kit, is his true human Omega. Everyone can feel the power of these two so there is no doubt the legend is true.

Not everyone likes it that things will now change and that humans need to be treated with respect from now on. Luca and Kit now have lots of enemies…

I just loved how it was clear from the start that Luca and Kit belonged together. They are fated mates and there is so much love between them from the start.

”I was made for you.”

There is some relationship angst when the couple thinks they need a female breeder so Luca can have an heir, but it’s not dragged out and it all works out when they find out And we get some lovely groveling, so that all worked out quite well. I do love me some groveling.

I do have to say that the end felt a bit rushed. We get all the action and then 2 pages of ‘end’, while I wanted just a bit more relaxation time for the two after all they’d been through.

This is definitely one of the best mpregs out there. If you’d like to try a shifter mpreg with lots of action, try this one.

Wow... There is a lot happening in these 215 pages.

I was excited to get my hands on this one 'cause I am a sucker for an mpreg story. I also really enjoy shifter books. And this one did not disappoint.

I'm pretty sure this is my first Victoria Sue book and I'm also pretty sure it won't be my last. I was impressed with the world she built in this story and also with all the characters she developed. They all played important roles in every scene they were in. Not once did I find myself getting bored with the story. It's action packed with some sweet romance.

I didn't care for the misunderstandings that led to the angst. I also felt the ending was rushed.

I'm hoping for an Sam and Asher book. I really want to read about these two getting together.

Happy reading, dolls! xx

Re-read 24th - 25th February 2024

The book I'm currently reading just isn’t working for me. So I did a random scroll through my kindle and landed on this one. I enjoyed it just as much the second time round.

Original review.

This has been on my to-read list for months and I finally decided I'd see what all the fuss was about.
Now I used to love vampire and shifter books but the market has become saturated and there's just so many bad ones out there and I know because unfortunately I've read a lot of them.
This thankfully is one of the good ones.
I loved the world that's been created here, thousands of years ago humans ruled and werewolves were the subservient race but with man fighting man and slowly destroying each other and the planet the werewolves took over saving the planet from destruction.
For thousand of years it worked well, the Alpha King governed the land as one kingdom but when he died without an heir fighting broke out over territories and lasted for hundreds of years but now most of the Alphas are like the humans they once despised.
The only thing that can change this is a new Alpha King but before you can have an Alpha King you need a pure omega and one hadn't been born in over a thousand years.
And what about the humans?
They are kept strictly controlled since they breed easier than wolves and any unlicensed humans were taken as slaves and treated as appallingly.

Luca is an Alpha-heir but on his eighteenth birthday he's poisoned by his twin Kieran, stabbed and left to die. He's discovered by a young human slave who sacrifices his own escape and safety to save him.

Seven years later these two meet again and Luca gains powers only held by the Alpha King. But Kit can't be his true mate because he's human and it's forbidden but history it appears has been changed.

I loved Kit, he's suffered so much and yet he's so beautiful. Luca I didn't like as much because Kit continues to suffer at his hands.

This is the first book I think I've read where a man gets pregnant as well!

All in all this is a fabulous read but I had a couple of small issues (I know went don't I ?)

Well shit...a shifter mpreg I actually liked.

The world building was a bit confusing and the differences in alphas. omegas, betas, and gammas got a bit muddled but once you get through all that it's a really interesting story. I really liked Luca. He was noble, kind and brave...he wanted to change the world to make it a better place because the suffering of the slaves (the humans) was too much. Thousands of years ago, humans were destroying the world and each other with the constant wars and as their numbers dwindled the wolves, who were the slaves at that time, rose up to defeat them. Since then, all of the werewolf history was hidden and the wolves became like those they had overthrown....cruel, greedy, and power hungry. Until one wolf and one human omega meet and mate to bring them all together.

The book had pack politics, espionage, and betrayal but it also had a lot of love and sacrifice.

I loved Luca and Kit together until Luca decided to be a dumb ass and pull some alpha fuckery in his jealousy without talking to Kit which caused Kit to be hurt. Did Not Like. But....he was properly shamed and guilty...he groveled well. But still....what a dumbass. After that though the guys are solid.

Most shifter mpreg's are normally over- sexed PWP with runny, gaping holes (yew) full of slick with lame ass plots and characters. But this one doesn't really have that many sex scenes and what there is, is good. We have knotting and multiple orgasms and LOVE. I wanted MORE. Can you ever have too much knotting? And I adored the characters... Luca's little sister Taheesha was a favorite. I hope she makes this a series because I want to see what's in store for Sam and Asher. Not a lot of info dumping on the birth so no squicky moments but after the pups are born the action hits so we don't get a lot of time to see the guys be Daddy's. Luca didn't even hold them on page really....lotsa feels but it was like they were born and then gone.

The big show down was kinda cool because I definitely wasn't expecting that until it happened. The betrayal was not from who I expected it to be and I was glad Luca was smart enough to catch on a bit in time to save Kit and the babies so Kit could have a chance to shine.

I highly recommend this book for shifter MM/ UF lovers. Very well done.

It ended with Kit sinking down on Luca's cock.....best ending evah! Though I would've liked them to finish, lol.

I think Ms Sue has just become one of my favorite authors! This book is amazing! A real page turner! Even though it has mates, it still allows for relationship development, the world-building and background story are wonderful, there are so many twists in the plot - it literally keeps you guessing what's going to happen next. I have a weak spot for alternate future books, and this one hit the spot!

The story of Luca and Kit is sometimes tragic and painful, sometimes sexy and romantic, sometimes action-packed and fast-paced and it's all wrapped in an adventurous quest of lost kings and enemies. There is back-stabbing, betrayal and jealousy, there are sweet and tender moments, there are steamy moments *fans herself* that will make your toes curl in your slippers! It has it all! I loved the whole lot of it and and ate it with a HUGE spoon! And BABIES! Who can say nay to babies! Through all the hardships and misunderstandings that made for quite a fantabulous read Luca and Kit emerge the winners, loyal and steady, so ready to heal Askara and its people! I loved it and highly recommend it!

So wonderfully terrible or terribly wonderful?

This book has everything. And I'm not talking just knotting and mpreg everything. I'm talking new worlds, sibling rivalry, slavery, mother in law from hell, corruption, double crossing, miscommunication, super sister who is only 13 everything! It is spectacularly cheesy but it is also the book version of Pringles*. I couldn't put it down and just gobbled the whole thing up as quickly as possible. I hope there is more.

What I liked a lot about it was that the dramas got sorted speedily, I mean they'd have to, there were so many the book would never end if they didn't.

This is book crack people. Be warned.

*I'd sell my mother for a tube of Pringles right now.

My apologies....

I’ve been wanting to read this books for years. Years.

I was so excited to begin it. But, imagine my surprise that instead of a compelling story full of layered characters, rich world building, and an intriguing plot all I got was a bunch of words that told me a story. No showing.

This is what I got:
Information dump
Confusing world building
Explanations
Explanations
Explanations
A little dialogue
Non-communication
(Maybe more dialogue would have helped here)
Flat characters
Clueless characters
More telling
Telling

I tell you what...
I am so disappointed with this writing,
With this book.

It could just be me. Many others liked it.
But I know what l like and this wasn’t it.

Scratch one series off my tbr.

My rec? If you can’t tell by my review, then I don’t know what to say.

I loved this book! Luca and Kit (adorable name for an adorable character), were my favorite kind of MCs…loving and devoted to one another. I loved that the author didn’t drag out any misunderstandings they occasionally had. This book was just as adventurous as it was romantic with many well developed secondary characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with also.

This is one of those books where I look at all the reviewers who gave it three, four and five stars and wonder seriously what kind of trash they have been reading that this book rates so highly with them.
It isn't the writing that's bad so much as every fucking obviously bad decision made by the main character. Oh wait I take that back there was at least one instance of the author making mention of the main character being in danger and then never following up on it like it never happened. You will constantly be going "what the fuck?!?!?" And having to take a break while you psych yourself up to keep powering through to the next what the fuck moment. The main character is so powerful that I don't understand how there can be any meaningful conflict except in the form of his terribly bad decisions coming back to haunt him which I'm sure is going to be the case since the main conflict so far have both consisted of that very thing. As there is no way I am finishing this and I am only 32% through it I'll leave you with this... if you hate stupidity and are forever mystified by the mindset of people who feel that murderers and rapists should be dealt with mercifully instead of simply being ended especially when all evidence indicates they will not be changing their ways if you give them a second or third chance then you better not buy this book because you will fucking hate it.

I loved this from the beginning to the end. This is my second book by Victoria Sue the first one,"Five Minutes Longer " I loved also. This book had so much going on in it so of course, I can't explain it all. I loved Kit, Luca and so many others. The world was very interesting and I really hope that this becomes a series. Love her writing...

I don't know if I have the words to adequately express just HOW MUCH I LOVED this story. What I can say is that this is probably my favorite thing I have ever read from this author (even more than her Sirius Wolves series, and that's saying something!), this is now one of my all-time favorite mpreg stories, and I simply cannot recommend this enough to people who love fantasy, shifters, romance, passion, emotion, and mpreg.

The world building in this is incredible, rich in fantasy and history. I could easily read many more books set in this world since there are areas mentioned but never ventured into. I loved the mix of wolves and humans, the hierarchy and control of everything and everyone, and the attention to detail in providing such a lush background that this story took place in.

The summary explains the premise for this story very well, we meet Luca as he is getting ready to go through his choosing ceremony, where he will pick an omega and be able to come into his status as an alpha. What he doesn't expect to find is Kit, an uneducated, unregistered human being is his mate, and someone he met years before.

KIT. I LOVED Kit. His love, his hope, his devotion and dedication to Luca, I just loved everything about him. Wanted to give him a BIG hug and just protect him from all the harms in the world type of love.

Together, Luca and Kit have to overcome obstacles to be together - from family and society, from their people, from neighboring countries, and more. You'll root for these two so hard and completely fall in love with them, I promise. Can't recommend this highly enough to read!

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES - AUDIO

When it comes to Victoria Sue and werewolves I feel like I repeat myself every time I write a review BUT in my opinion no one does wolves like this author does. You don’t just get a quick and easy time in her stories with lots of sex and an alpha shouting mine, mine, mine. You get incredible world building and really likeable characters that you quickly become invested in – there is a lot of story here folks and the audio is just as alluring as the ebook and once again I couldn’t put it down. In this one you also get a lot of angst as Luca is not the sharpest when it comes to his new relationship and he lets Kit down a few times before he starts thinking things through.

Luca is an Alpha who has come of age and needs to pick an omega mate. This is done at the choosing ceremony but none of the omegas on show hold his interest. When he stares into the eyes of a young enslaved human there is recognition and an immediate desire to keep the starved and beaten young man safe. What starts as a good deed turns into an event that will go down in history as the Alpha heir meets his destined pure omega and becomes King.

The choosing of his mate is actually the easy part even though it’s not gone quite as planned. There is no denying who Luca has become and the wolves are quick to fall to their knees and recognise their King. There are those who protest however and the wicked witch in this story is definitely Luca’s mother who starts scheming almost immediately. Although there is never any doubt that Luca and Kit should and will be together there are a few hiccups caused by Luca’s stupidity and aided by his mother’s scheming that leave Kit nursing a temporary bruised heart.

It doesn’t take Luca long to come to his senses but with this pair there seems to be drama after drama. Pregnancy is the last thing that this newly mated and unsettled pair were expecting but it is met with cautious excitement once Kit is home and safe and on the road to being well once again. I think I said when I first read this story that I didn’t feel like it was finished and that Luca and Kit had more to share with us and I still feel that way after listening to it this time – there is definitely a lot more to come and I can’t wait for the second book in this series to be published later this year.

NARRATION:

Joel Leslie has fast become one of my favourite narrators and I enjoyed his telling of The Alpha King immensely. When you get a narrator who gives you clear and distinguishable character voices that mesh with how you imagined them sounding it really adds to the story being told. Listening to his narration here was an absolute pleasure.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

Loved it! This book is wholly responsible for sending me to work on less than 4 hours sleep and with the worst book hangover I’ve had in months.

I don’t know quite what it is about this author but when she writes wolves she nails it every single time. I was nervous with this one. I am a huge fan of her Sirius Wolves series and I was nervous that this one wouldn’t match up or just wouldn’t feel right but it was all worry for nothing.

This story feels almost fairy-tale like as the strong alpha meets the blue eyed boy from his dreams and together they forge ahead and make the world a better place. There is even an evil mother! That’s a pretty simplistic view though because as always Victoria Sue has filled her story with all the tiny significant and insignificant details that weave together and draw the reader in.

Luca is an alpha-heir and has reached the age where he can take an omega for his mate. There are a myriad of reasons why Luca doesn’t want any of the omega’s being presented but he needs a mate so he can start rebuilding his pack. Kit is a street kid, one of the unlicensed humans that has no rights, he has also had a glimpse of his future and has been surviving in the hopes that it becomes his reality.

Luca and Kit have met before
Even with a good dose of insta-lust and history in the making as a new King emerges this pair are not without their problems and a lot of them centre on Luca’s obliviousness and lack of communication. Kit may be an omega but he is feisty and not about to be dismissed as fragile as he proves more than once.

Although this book appears to be a standalone it feels more like the start of a new series. I would love to see another book devoted to Luca and Kit as I think we have only just touched the surface of their story and then of course there is Asher and Sam. I would highly recommend The Alpha King and I have already sent the author a cheeky message for more books!

DNF 60%. I thought I was reading MF with the Other Woman trope. Alpha Luca was an asshat and omega Kit instantly forgave him. This was a Stormy Glenn version of her Supremacy of Wolves series.

Very enjoyable. Very.

The misunderstanding/angsty part made me want to pull my hair out but I made it through.

I can not wait for the next book. Seriously.

In a new order where wolves rule and humans are categorized into groups, we enter the world the Askara…

With the prologue, we meet werewolf Luca Hightower as he is wounded after being attacked and poisoned via revenge by his twin brother Kieran. Luca fears he is dying until he hears a voice, a voice belonging to a young human boy who appears to have knowledge of who Luca is and who he will become. The young boy with the lightest blue eyes Luca had ever seen, prophesizes Luca’s rise to be the Alpha King. Unfortunately, the boy is taken away and though Luca is saved, he has no idea who they boy is but he will never forget being saved and the blue eyes of the boy who saved him.

From the prologue we move forward seven years to Luca’s 25th birthday and the ceremony which will allow him to pick an Omega so that he can come into his Alpha powers and lead his pack. But fate has a way of stepping in and when Luca comes to the rescue of a human slave who is about to be whipped, things get way interesting.

True mates were so rare they were merely whispered about.

I have to tell you, I truly adore the fated mate trope and this one made me all sorts of gooey. Not only is Luca destined to be the Alpha King but his destiny comes wrapped around a True Omega and no one ever said an Omega had to be a wolf or female now, did they?
Goodness. I have a whole list of reasons as to why I adored Kit but each of them could be a spoiler so I will try to slow my roll and just say he is adorable AF but he does have a few issues. His gift of foresight is amazing and how he instantly changes all that Luca is as an Alpha to an Alpha King was great to read but these two, they have some issues they need to deal with.
Luca. My mate. The Alpha King destined to heal a fractured Askara, and me, Kit, a guttersnipe bastard orphan destined to help him.

This book, it comes with angst and I am a self-proclaimed angst whore. I love the hell out of it and this book delivered. Sure, some of the angst could have been avoided but when you really look at Kit and Luca, they are babies in this new world of Alpha King and True Omega and any newlywed couple is bound to have communication problems.
Luca, I swear a few times I wanted to throw my Nook at you but you are the best at getting forgiveness and you really do love and adore your mate. Kit, you are not without fault in the angst that was created because all you had to do was ask. And yet again, the way you can Luca make up is so very worth it.

You are my life. Every second of every day I thank the fates for being poisoned.

So while we have the fated mate romance with knotting and yes, Mpreg, we also get this wonderful world building of the story that I fell hard for. When something is introduced, I need to know all about it and the author does a fantastic job of building a world where wolves rule and humans are slaves all while giving us detailed history on it so that it’s easily understood. The rift between human and wolf was one of importance to the story and how both sides would accept the mating of the Alpha King with the True Omega. There was a lot of knowledge being shared and yet it was never an info dump nor too complex to go over my head. Not only do we get the wolf/human dynamic but we have this history, an almost mythology of the Alpha King and True Omega that leaves so much to be learned. It was helpful to have Gabriel along to aid Kit and Luca in what their mating would lead to and I really wish they would have used him much earlier when they had questions but once again, all of this was new to them.

Luca’s sisters were remarkable when we meet them and all they do for the couple. I could have dealt without Luca’s mom as she is awful but I like how she was dealt with. Those Luca holds close and whom he trusts gave a richness to the story all while fueling my desire for more stories with other couples that we meet along the way and one I just need desperately *cough* Sam *cough* Asher.

…he is the hope for all humans. If Kit can stand by your side then it gives us all hope that one day there will be a chance of equality for everyone.

This story moved at a fast pace and I swear I read it just as fast. Once things started to get going, I couldn’t stop reading and where I usually take notes, I just read until the end. That end? It felt a little rushed to me and I wondered if I was missing pages because I needed more. Is that me being greedy for all that the author gave me? Possibly and yet the epilogue was so stupidly sweet, it pacified me for the moment. But I am not done with this world and I hope the author isn’t either. I need to see what Luca and Kit were preparing for at the end and I really wonder if Kit’s vision of the Black and White pups weren’t something entirely different. Cause, you know?

At the end of it all, this was truly romantic in only the way a true mate story can be. It had everything I love in a shifter story and then some. The history and mythology was magnificent, the romance angsty and swoony and the story, beautifully told.

Now… I just need more.

This is one of the best MPREG shifter books I have read so far. It was interesting and explanatory
I loved the characters, the plot and the settings.

Kit
My heart broke for all the stuff he went trough, the pain, the lost, the humiliation it all broke my poor heart in pieces. Through it all he had hope so much hope and love. He was this amazing uncomplicated soul.

Luca
Well he and I had a love / hate relationship going on at one stage. First I thought the world of this guy you know? Then I wanted tho kill the bastard for what he put Kit through during the second choosing ceremony... I couldn't believe he did that..... Okey he made up for it but still ....

a lot of my gr friends have been reading this one recently so maybe i came into this one with high expectations, not sure. but unfortunately this entire book was a bunch of info-dumping. there was practically no actual world building and the author didn't seem to make much of an effort to show us anything. instead we learned everything through historical monologues or character dialogue that felt very unnatural.

the relationship between kit and luca wasn't even very interesting. it was kinda insta-love, which i really don't mind as long as it's done right, and in this case there didn't even seem to be chemistry between the mcs.

there was just nothing about reading this book that was enjoyable and if it weren't for a challenge i probably would have dnf'ed it.

I ended up liking this quite a lot. The world building was excellent, great writing, entertaining story and the action never let up.

I really loved the characters, their back-stories and their devotion to each other as the story progressed. Luca had always known he was heir to his father's pack, and had eagerly anticipated his time to take over so that he could begin making badly needed changes to their society, if only within his own pack. Kit was an unregistered human slave, the lowest of the social ladder as well as the most mistreated. However, when Kit and Luca come face to face at the Luca's alpha celebration, Luca recognizes Kit as his true mate, and humans are forbidden as mates to wolves. However, alphas take on gifted abilities from their omega during mating, and Kit's gifts make Luca the Alpha King, the first king in a thousand years.

I'm not normally a fan of insta-love, unless it's really made believable, which is hard to do in my opinion. With supes though, I'm much more forgiving of that because they literally are not human, so things are different for them. I loved Kit and Luca together. They were really sweet and romantic *and hot, let's not forget that* and Luca was definitely the protective alpha mate, especially as Kit was so badly abused previously as a slave. In addition, none of the other ruling wolves were happy about the changes Luca intended to make and Kit was a target for their displeasure.

There was one incident that I was afraid was going to ruin Luca as a wonderful character for me, and consequently the book. As a result of misunderstanding an overheard conversation and *seeing* what he expected to see instead of what actually was, Luca did something very nearly unforgivable to me, hurting and humiliating Kit terribly. Or it would have been unforgivable, except that he figured out his mistake almost instantly and groveled properly and it was over very quickly. Of course, he didn't grovel near enough for me but that's because Kit was all warmth, compassion and love and forgave Luca without question. *grumbles*

There was lots of danger to both Luca and Kit but I was really happy that the protectiveness and saving wasn't all on Luca's side. Kit was frail and human in comparison but just as fierce and determined to keep Luca safe as Luca was with him. There were also quite a few awesome secondary characters and I hope to see more of them as well as how the changes for Askara *and the heirs <3* happen as the series continues.

Last but absolutely not least, Joel Leslie's audio performance was outstanding, and I'm crossing my fingers he continues in the future books!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

One of the things I always look for when starting a new shifter story is the world building. In a genre that has so many tried and true elements, it is always important to me to see that an author has put thought and creativity in the world building, and Victoria Sue does a wonderful job with that here. Her world is almost dystopian, with wolves ruling over humans who live in horrible conditions and are frequently mistreated. Sue nicely explores the politics of the wolf packs, the legends and history surrounding the Alpha King and pure omega, and the interplay between humans and wolves. At times things were a bit overwhelming, I will admit. There are a lot of side characters and a lot happening, and on occasion I felt either a bit lost, or as if things were moving at lightning speed. But I really appreciated how Sue really developed the world building here and gave us something new and really creative.

I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Kit and Luca. Things fall into place very quickly once Luca realizes Kit is the boy from years before. Their bond is pretty much immediate, as is Luca’s transformation into the Alpha King. Again, things happen fast. It seemed like a matter of moments between Luca being an Alpha-heir on the outs with the leaders, to suddenly being in charge of everyone and making changes. This part is somewhat of a whirlwind, especially as Luca doesn’t always fully understand the situations he is ruling on. I also wished for a little more background on Luca to help explain why he views the world so much differently than the other Alphas and leaders.

I enjoyed this, it was totally ridiculous and there was so, so much going on:

Insta love, claiming, self lubrication, misunderstanding, evil mother, good humans, bad wolves, slavery, road trip ( and that's just the first 50% ).
Because of all this there wasn't a lot of depth to some of the characters, and the plot was a bit all over the place, but it rattles along and Kit and Luca were sweet.
