Rate this book

among other things, imparts the idea that landscape paintings aren't simply precise captures of a scenery but powerful attempts to evoke emotions such as melancholy, nostalgia or pride, and are thus reflections of the "conditions of the spirit."

How To Visit an Art Museum begins with a discussion of The White Cube, a place "free of context" [i.e. clean / neutral / blank slate] within which to view art. I have often felt that viewing art within such a space can imbue the experience with an unnecessary amount of sterility, so it was refreshing that the introduction illustrated this frustration other viewers, art makers, and art critics have come up against.

This book is by no means an academic look at the intricacies of art viewing experiences, but rather acts as the strong hands of a massage, working out the kinks that have the potential to inhibit museum visitors from having fulfilling art viewing experiences. A few of my favorite sections were #7 [How to Process Provocative Art], #11 [Why Your Kid is an Excellent Guide], #10 [The Importance of Finding Your Own Masterpiece], #12 [How to Deal with Artspeak], #13 [On the Added Value of Collection Staff Picks], #22 [Reframing What the Museum Restaurant is About], and especially # 30 [On Pinpointing Your Underlying Motives].

This a beautifully designed and manufactured book, one that I hope to remember to revisit from time to time, especially if I'm about to visit a museum and have not done so in a while.

To lekka i przyjemna lektura. No dobra! :)

I like this little book! It is a compact book, but that makes it accessible to a larger group of people and I think that is great. If you like to read another perspective on how to enjoy and visit a museum, read this!

+ The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) -> Boston

* Guggenheim Museum, NY
* Museum de Fundatie, Zwolle (Pays-Bas) -> café + art
* MMOMA, NY
* Walker Art Center, Minneapolis
* Insitute of Contemporary Art, Boston

Lvre acheté au Musée National Hungarian Gallery.

I liked this little book.

Physically it is fun to read. It fits well in my hand and is full of photos.

The author presents a series of ideas on ways to make visiting art museums more rewarding. I have been visiting art museums for decades and found several new things to try on future visits.

Some highlights:
#4: Look at the face of fellow patrons.
#6: Look at frames: "A painting without a frame is like a soul without a body," Van Gogh once said.
#10: Find your masterpiece: "Nothing is a masterpiece until it's about two hundred years old. A picture is like a tree or a church, you've got to let it grow into a masterpiece."
#13: Ask staff about their picks.
#24: "Most of us are keen to rely on labels and often spend longer on them than looking at the work itself." I thought that was just me.
#26: Read the guest book.
#31: Start your visit in the store. Buy a guide and take it around with you.

This book is rather thin, and filled with many pages that had few words. If you force yourself hard, I think you can finish the entire book within 2 hours.

The book is interesting. It challenges ones' notion of what visiting an art museum entrails. However, many of the things covered by the book seem to be reaching out to art curators and museums organisers than actual museum goers. Bringing a chair into the museum or having a window in the gallery all seems interesting concepts, except I, as a museum go-er, can't really work on those things.

That said, there are interesting nuggets of information that makes this book interesting. To me, this was about 15% of the book.

Would I read this book if I knew what I would get into? Most probably, but I would spend less time on it. I assume there are better art books out there.

I am not really sure what to think about this book. I saw it in a museum gift shop, picked it up and put it down again. But I kept thinking about it and then bought it at another museum gift shop. Sadly to day I am pretty disappointed in this book. It brings up some good points, but most of the tips where not useful to me at all. For example the book tells you to talk to guards, guides, take your children to the museum and let them guide you and start conversations in the museum yourself. I am not sure what kind of museums this book is talking about, but most of the museums I have been to do not have guided tours and the guards switch on a daily basis.

Perhaps not a complete waste of time and money, but it comes pretty close.

3.5/5 stars. An extra 0.5 star because I loved the structure of the content.

This book is no definitive guide to enjoying museums. As in the subtitle, the author has tried to give some suggestions to make your visit to the white box more interesting, as the writer likes to describe museums. The structure of the book is quite interesting in itself. The pages are not marked to indicate that each chapter is a mere suggestion, not dependent on others. If the reader wants to start from the back or middle, they can start from whatever catches their interest. That is also one of the suggested ways to appreciate museums.

I do not agree with all the recommended activities, but some certainly caught my eye. I will be trying them out on my next visit.

just… don’t know how to give a review. The book is very thin, and takes not too much time to read it. This book gives 32 advices to those who want to those who want to get known of art museum. After reading it I think the advices is not that helpful than I thought. The most inspiring is that we need to observe what arounds the artworks, find help from our little child, the securities and etc. For me, it would be better if it adds some parts like how to read and know the paint, where to begin, how to feel it... (all of them are not mentioned in this book)

Well, I was convinced I would hate this book because when I see a thin book that is packed with pictures and it tries to teach me something, I become very biased and very skeptical. Yet, there was something about it that made me want to go to an art museum and try a few of those 32 tips. Honestly, they all were quite generic and many of them, I am sure, museum-goers have used, like reading labels, looking at other people looking at paintings, walking slow... Nevertheless, it's worth reminding us how to make a museum visit more entertaining and meaningful.

I did like this book and had forgotten that I needed to finish it. My goal for 2021 is to read the physical books in my home and so I started looking in my bedside table and realized that I had left this little gem at 85% read. It has some great ideas for experiencing art in new ways and 2 tips that I read today will definitely go with me! 1. Take your earphones & pair art & music. 2. Think of the museum as a menu rather than a checklist. Maybe spending time with 5 pieces is all you need today. Great ideas!!

I went to art museum in a hush time when I traveled in Copenhagen.
I felt a little regret since I don't know much about how to visit an art museum.
I live in Shanghai, which is a beautiful and vigorous city, there are also many art museums.
When I want to spend more time to enjoy the art, I met this book in my faviourit bookstore.
The author used easy words to show me mind method and the tips to visit an art museum.
I am looking forward to trying these tips for my next visit to art museum.

Reading this booo actually made me very excited to visit an art gallery now. I've always loved art museums and exhibits and I picked up this book to see how I could try to enhance my experience. It has insights that I never thought were an issue, like museum legs and how exhausted we feel after walking in the museum. In this book, I was shown a way to combat museum legs and am now eager to try it out!!

I enjoyed this small collection of essays about how to get more out of museum visits. The author encourages readers to talk to museum guards, to sit more and to slow down. He asserts that visiting a museum shouldn’t be about the number of pieces you see; it should be about the pieces you spend time with and question and think about. Worthwhile for folks who might want permission or ideas for doing things differently at a museum next time.

Really thoughtful book.
I'm going to experiment with the following on subsequent visits to galleries when I can:
1. Listening to music to draw out emotional, thematic or dramatic aspects of art.
2. Blindfolded tactile art sessions (where allowed)
3. Have a child explain art to me through their interpretation
4. Strike up conversations with strangers

Perhaps not a complete waste of time, but pretty darn close to it. I did, however, pick up 2 ideas for the next time I go. But, honestly, do we really need a book to tell us about the museum gift shop and restaurant?

If you find this book for a quarter at some library sale, you might pick it up. Otherwise, you're not really missing too much.

Museum designs follow the “white cube” idea. White cube filled with artistic objects, no noise, no distraction. This in turn intimidates audiences, who may not have an art background. But you might be surprised about insights offered by the museum staff, guards and visitors through your conversations with them.
