Mika’s life has never been normal, but it’s hers. After being told by the Great Spirit that her destiny is to stand up for the Earth Mother’s children and “save the great species from extinction,” she buries herself in an investigative journalism career hunting down poachers and exposing illegal trade in wildlife exotics. A survivor by nature, she would rather fight injustice than maneuver the hassles and heartache of relationships anyway. When danger suddenly finds her unprepared, Mika’s perception of her life is shattered and she’s hurled into a realm of magic and murder she does not understand. Seduced by Bruin, the powerful and sexy warrior who saves her life, Mika is catapulted into a world where Were-creatures and Scourge assassins threaten not only her life but her heart as well. With the boundary between worlds crumbling, Mika realizes that committing to save the great species will draw her deeper into a reality more terrifying to her than anything she’s faced before. Trusting in love.
This book was so good! When looking at the cover you may be a little hesitant. I know they say to never judge a book by its cover, but come on you know we all have done this. And I am guilty of doing that with this one, but I was perfectly surprised by how great this book was. I loved the whole thing, there wasn’t a thing in it that I would change.
This is the second book in the series, but when reading it before the first one you wouldn’t even know it. It could be a stand alone. Now Ursa is actually Mika. A girl who just wants to be normal and have a normal life doing normal things with her friends. This can never really be because Mika is always hiding who she really is. She is one with Mother Earth. Her family are Native Americans and she was gifted with many gifts, like the sense of danger, being able to communicate with the Earth, and call it to her. She also works as an investigating journalist until she is thrown into something a lot worse. She under covers a group of people murdering animals for their pelts. Mika is later attached and saved by no other than Bruin, a were-bear.
Mika is thrown into a unknown world when it becomes known that she is Bruin’s mate. Can they survive each other and their trust issues? Or will they walk away from what they could have. Mika is scared of love because of her parents, Bruin is scared everyone will leave him since his pack was murdered. The tale of these two is so frustrating and complex that it will leave you yelling at them to crying with them. Mika is such a strong character. She doesn’t take crap from anyone and she is the one to always stand her ground, but will also admit when she is wrong Bruin is the strong protective type that wants to keep Mika in a glass house where she can’t be hurt. The struggle to find mutual ground with these two is hard and slow going. But so worth it in the end.
I actually went out and bought the first book as well once I finished Ursa Unearthed. The first book is ‘Blaze Ignites’ and is based off Jude’s story. I’m rating this one a 5 star. So go out and buy this one. You won’t be disappointed.
After not having to wait very long, I received this book in exchange for a review from the author herself, J.L. Madore! Thank you so much for giving me this book...
My review from the first installment said it all, I fell in love with this series. It had action, love and it kept my constant attention and wanting to continue to read it... until the next day starts!
This second book does not go under! It is equally exciting... and maybe a bit more then the first. I must confess to have read this book within 3 days after receiving it.
Ursa Unearthed... a name I at first could not place. I have read similar books, so I do know that Ursa is the name for the mate of the Were-king, actually another name for Were-Queen (please correct me if I am incorrect, I do not mind). But Unearthed, that word did not make sense me in the combination with the name.
Of course after reading the complete book, I know the name completely fits with the book! Sorry, I tend to write too much if I'm excited.
Mika, an investigative journalist, got mixed up with something she never thought to excited. She actually didn't even know that when she started her article on this particular subject, hunting down poachers and exposing illegal trade in wildlife exotics, it would bring her to a whole other world; a realm of magic.
After being attacked at a bar, rescued and mated by Bruin, her life changed and it was a constant fight to getting to know the realm, how it all worked; to fit in a place she never knew existed and to also trust in what she thought could abandon her easily, trusting in LOVE. Mika never knew that she had more issues then she thought she had, and after a lot of time... she came to a conclusion that benefit both of them, Mika & Bruin as a whole to become King and Queen of the Were-creatures.
I think I wrote too much...
The bottom line is that this book is incredible, amazing... and I truly hope that there will be a third installment to add to this series.
I love it! A must read, but you should read Blaze Ignites before you read this installment, so you can understand some of what and who they all are.
I read and reviewed Blaze Ignites a year or so ago, because Jenny and I had worked together in a critique group and I was itching to find out what the finished product was like. When Jenny offered me a review copy of Ursa Unearthed, the second novel in her Scourge Survivor Series, I again jumped at the chance. I love to see my writer friends grow and mature in their craft. I’m happy to say I lurved Ursa Unearthed. Jenny writes in a bare (dare I say, naked) style. Not a word is wasted. Action and hot sex propel the reader through the book. I actually finished reading it the week before last. At my reading rate, I burned through it. My critical eye caught a few, very minor, editing gaffes, but by and large, my only critical comment on the story itself is that Mika’s “lie,” the thing that prevents her from committing to Bruin until things become so dire she has no choice, is not well developed at the outset. I occasionally found myself irritated with Jenny’s protagonist for her failure to get over her bad self, spank that inner moppet, put on her big girl panties, and deal. Developing her trauma would have given this reader something to hang that irritation on. There would be a reason beyond being transported into a world of magic and danger to prevent her from accepting her altered circumstances. Given that Mika is Native North American, has a spiritual connection with the Earth Mother, which grants her supernatural insights, and her main support, her grandfather, accompanies her to Haven, Mika shouldn’t have been so resistant. Having said that, I think Ursa Unearthed is a fabulous book. The characters are otherwise well-drawn and Jenny has a knack for making you care about them. And yes, you read that correctly earlier, there is lots of hot sex in the novel and Jenny writes this well, too. You’ll tingle in all the right places ;) The story is largely standalone, but readers of Blaze Ignites will recognize many familiar faces in the cast. They don’t detract from Mika and Bruin’s character arcs, though. The spotlight remains where it should, on Mika and her bear.
Incredible book! J.L. Madore couldn't have done a better job then what she did with this book! the characters are amazing! the story brilliant and I couldn't put the book down for a min. I was blown away but the powerful emotions in this, not only between Bruin and Mika but with the rest of the family as well, it seemed like everywhere you turned someone was in a uproar about something..lol
The Native elements in the story were awesome, being Native American myself I really connected to and appreciated these aspects of the story. I found it made the story very powerful and gave it a uniqueness that not a lot of others have.
I really enjoyed getting to know the characters from the first book more as well as meeting some new ones. we got to meet Kobi briefly in the first book and I liked getting to know more about him in this one as I find him a very interesting character and would love to know even more. Aust is another fav of my he constantly intrigues me and with each book he gets more and more intriguing...lol...he is definitely a most interesting character!
The villain Abbadan is defiantly freaky! as far as bad guys go I defiantly wouldn't want him after me. He is on bad mo fo. He is a worthy villain that's for sure and the heroes are up for the challenge of defeating him. He is a slippery bugger though and with the power of mind control is always got the upper hand.
This is a series that you will not want to miss! if you love shifter, elves, magic, different realms and bad ass warriors this is defiantly the series for you! don't forget to checkout book 1 Blaze Ignites!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Ms. Madore for your generosity.
Ursa Unearthed, the second book by J.L. Madore Scourge Surviver series focuses on Bruin and Mika.
Mika is a journalist who crusades to save the earth and wildlife. Bruin is a Bear King. The two meet in a bar, and from there, the action picks up. As the story unfolds, we learn these two people are meant to be mates. The fun is watching Mika learn about the world Bruin is from, and accepting her destiny. She is another strong woman, in a realm filled with them.
The first book introduced us to an evil army called the Scourge. They make their appearance in the storyline, and play an integral part. Favorite characters from Blaze Ignites are back. We get to learn more about one of the Highborne Elves: Aust.
Mika and Aust form a fast, and endearing friendship. I hope we learn more about this particular elf, and the rest of the gang.
*I want to start off by thanking the author for allowing me the opportunity to read the second book in the series for free in exchange for an honest review*
I loved this book! It was a great follow-up to the first one in the series. Even though it's the second in the series, I think this could also be a stand alone book- same goes with the first in the series, "Blaze Ignites".
I absolutely love how strong the female characters are - there is not one single 'fragile' female in this series; it's awesome! I could not put this book down, which is when you know it's a great book. I loved Aust & Mika's friendship - I want to know more about Aust. I really hope the author includes his story in this series.
I can't wait to read the next one! I highly recommend this series and this book to those who like paranormal romance and/or mystery - this book had a little bit of it all. Just go get it already! :-)
We jumped to a conclusion without all the facts, we had a fight, hurt each other, realised we were wrong and made up.... rinse and repeat. While I enjoyed this story, neither Mika or Bruin learned from their many fights, so frustrating.
But apart from that, I enjoyed the story. Hot hot hot sexy times, sexy alpha males (so many!), and all my favourite characters from book 1.
The second book in her Scourge Survivor series and J.L.Madore emerges as a gifted and always humorous storyteller. In this tale of Bruin, king of the weres, and his quest for a mate, Madore expands her fantasy worlds and builds on the strong characters of Jade and Galan. Mika is reluctant to leave her life as an investigative journalist in Vancouver, but finds herself caught up in something beyond her control. Bruin is portrayed as a rough and forceful ruler of the beasts and a bear who knows what he wants. He wants Mika and won't give up until he gets her.
I just love J.L.'s fantasy world! Great characters, lots of action, unique creatures, romance...it's a perfect blend. I'm not crazy about characters who jump right into bed and I admit to wanting slap Mika around a bit. Despite that, I understood where Mika was coming from, and Bruin was beyond patient with her. She definitely had some deserved groveling time. I adore Bruin's core family and how protective they are of each other. Another great work from Ms. Madore - and I'm eagerly anticipating the next one in the Scourge Survivor Series!
I didn't enjoy it as much as the first but it was still good. I was confused at first as this all happened in a different setting until they got to haven. The two leads are frustrating and need their heads bashing together but they got their in the end! Lexi needs to work really hard to redeem herself but I'm willing to give her the chance and read the next book.
He's the King of the Were ,a bear and mates to a human who is native American. In this continuation of this hot series. A worthy read -always good to find a new author
I have had this book for over 2 years and didn't remember it till now. I got it from the author and I thank her for that and really appreciate it. I will probably have to read the first part again to remember why I like Jade according to my review because if she is anything like Mika, then I don't know how what happened. A 3.5 star rating from me. Now about this story......I don't hate Mika but GOD she is annoying. And self-centered, stupid, stubborn and a host of other things heroines are whenever the other does too much in making then independent and feisty. She only thinks in terms of herself. Not how her decisions affect others or whatever, she only thinks of what she wants. That is well and good initially but when it happens over the course of a book, it is annoying. She later did have a bit of self-reflection and blamed all her actions on daddy issues but by then, my dislike for her was already deep. Bruin on the other hand....I like. He is awesome. Strong, Compassionate, Caring and a host of other things. Sure he is controlling but that can be attributed to his past and he is only like that when it comes to Mika and even then, he is open to compromise. The only time he disappointed me was the way he treated his sister because of Mika at the end of the story. And the side characters had flavor. Aust, Galan, Jade, even the aggressive Lexi. I wished she had more of a role. And I hated it when she came to apologize to Mika and the way Mika treated the apology, reminded me of why I dislike her. The plot is quite good and very enjoyable. Started slow but really blossomed into an page turner. The only part I did dislike was when Aust almost died. Why tease us with his death by saying "No one has ever survived his ailment" only for Mika to come work some magic? I mean, couldn't someone have also prayed to Mother Earth before to save their friend or loved one from that same ailment? Not a part of the story I have warmth towards. My highlight of the story was when Jade was sick and she and her fiance had to partake in an orgy to she can survive. Would have been a solid 4 star but Mika just made me irritated.
Mika "The Bandit" Silverbrook is an investigate reporter out celebrating her latest expose. Mika is looking forward to down time with her Grandfather. Mika notices a handsome stranger wearing a vest she's intrigued. When Mika is attacked outside the club she's rescued by handsome stranger named Bruin. Bruin discovers that he wants more from Mika maybe if he plays his cards right. When Mika and Bruin end up with mating mark on their palms things go downhill fast. Mika knows nothing about Bruin's world yet the mating mark changes things forever. Neither Mika or Bruin had good childhood's. Will Mika and Bruin allow the past to color the present? Will Mika understand Bruin's world? Your answers await you in Ursa Unearthed.
I'm really loving this series. The mix of fantasy and modern fairy tale just makes such an enjoyable read. I love the characters! The characters are brave, real, honest, raw, complex, and down to earth. The story is wonderfully complex, intriguing, compelling, and real. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This series just keeps getting better and better... loved and teared up when the action got to much. This is a fabulous book and a must read for everyone 👍
Merged review:
Wow!
This series just keeps getting better and better... loved and teared up when the action got to much. This is a fabulous book and a must read for everyone 👍
I can’t even describe how much I love the quirky strong female lead. I thought Mika was amazing but I wanted to scream at her at the same time! I also love that each one highlights a new person, it keeps the reads fun and interesting and they intertwine wonderfully!
