In Episode One we learned that Ned Duncan and Jake Housa set out to kill the beast that was killing the Housa’s sheep. With a full moon casting an eerie light on the landscape they saw a huge, hairy apparition come into the pasture. Ned fired his musket. Although they were sure it was hit, no blood could be found. Jake’s grandmother recognized the animal’s description and declared it a werewolf. Eva, the silversmith’s daughter, scoffed at the story the boys told and was determined to prove they were telling tall tales. At the next full moon, the boys, along with their friends Maria and Eva, again waited for the beast’s appearance. Before she could be stopped Eva rushed toward the approaching form shouting that she knew it was a fake and would rip that mask off its face. Swept up by his mighty arms she was carried into the woods where she was brutally assaulted. Later as Eva recuperated at home she suddenly disappeared from her room. Large wolf-like paw prints were found outside her window. Sheriff Donmyer organized a posse and set out to find her. The trail led them to a gypsy camp where the Gypsy Queen told them fearful howls had been heard the night before. She didn’t tell them she had found a girl in the forest that morning. The young lady was exhausted and had cuts all over her body. Thinking she could ransom the girl for silver, she kept her hidden. That night another almost full moon sent more howls echoing through the forest. The Queen’s son rushed to attack the beast but was himself attacked. Once more Eva disappeared
