This guy has good insight, though he focuses a little more on the UK circuit, where the horse racing game is a little different. Though it thrives more in Britain than in the U.S. in terms of popularity (unfortunate as the ponies are the best way to gamble, by far), their version of the game is not as good as what we have here in the U.S. For example, in the UK, winning a bet (cashing a ticket) does not guarantee a profit as it does in the U.S. parimutuel system. You can be correct in a prediction and still take a 30% hit depending on the betting pool level. Here, you must profit at least 5% (2.10 for 2.00 stake). Also, they have a separate bookmaker industry in Britain in addition to parimutuel wagers. This has pros and cons. The main positive factor is that the return odds might be higher. However, win from a bookmaker too much for their liking, and he (and his colleagues) will ban you. The parimutuel system is by definition anonymous for the most part. We all take a risk, the takeout comes out of the pools, and the winners equally divide the pot, just like poker. The tracks and bet-takers here in the U.S. don't care who wins. That's better for the player.

When studying the Sport of Kings it's necessary to read many books, not only for the background and approaches, but to glean the little nuggets that you can build your own unique system around. For only those approaches that are not widely known or understood have a hope of being profitable. That's the nature of this game.
