Aileen Travers #2

Midnight's Emissary

Rate this book
Aileen has a few rules for her life. Do her job and go home safe. Keep the supernatural world away from her human family. Stay off the vampire radar. And, above all, don’t get involved in spook politics.

But when Liam comes back into town bringing a mystery that threatens the life she’s built, she finds every closely guarded rule flying out the window as she sinks ever deeper into the supernatural world.

Ultimately, it may be the people she loves the most who pay the price in the high stakes game that vampires call life.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later, and I threw my cookies at her head. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companion, Loki, who would like to try her paw at typing.

I'm really struggling with this series, which is too bad because I like Aileen a hell of a lot.

Here's my problem: there is not a single person, in the entire secondary cast, that I like at all. And while that was okay in the first book, I thought they'd grow on me as they progressed through their character arcs. But they aren't.

I utterly loathe Liam and Brax. On every level. They are completely TSTL, and yet still are these utterly condescending shitbags. Aileen has saved their lives multiple times, and yet they still treat her like she's this pretty little moron who needs to stand to the side and let the big boys work. Even like 60 seconds AFTER she saves their lives - because they are yet again completely fucked when they tell her to stay out of a situation - they berate her for getting involved. They don't even acknowledge that they needed help.

I don't think I could actually hate them more.

And then Brax and his shit at the end ... ugh. It is intolerable.

Liam, he deserves a stake in the balls for continually nagging her about how she'd be happier if she just joined the vampires. I honestly can't even believe his stupidity at this point. Her every single fucking encounter with vampires - Liam included - has been awful. They do nothing but bully, her, torture her, or take away her choices. And the fact that he can't see that makes him a laughable fucking idiot.

I could probably get past all this if Aileen weren't so fucking weak. I don't mean in personality - she's awesome - but in power. She struggles against the condescending and utterly stupid shit of the aforementioned assholes, but on the scale of personal power, she's a mouse and they are all fucking grizzly bears. Which means the book is just this neverending chain of seeing her forced into situation after situation by the completely worthless cast of secondary characters. She has no choice but to go along with them, and I'm fucking tired of it.

Oh, and lest you think that Liam and Brax are the only awful ones, no. They are just the primary ones - the candidates for love interest, I assume. But Caroline - she sucks. Peter the sorcerer - fucking monster (why she doesn't just break his neck while he has that copper bracelet on, I will never understand). Everyone she works with? Shitbags. I want to like Jerry, but he keeps pushing her into situations that are bullshit, so no. Miriam? Don't trust her, she's probably evil.

There is not a single fucking decent secondary character in this entire series so far, and I am fucking tired of seeing Aileen be treated like constant shit by them.

I'm going to give it one more book, but if she doesn't get some fucking agency, I am going to have to bow out.

I really like this series story wise, but I have to say I personally hate Liam- and I just know he's going to be the love interest for upcoming books.

His character does that bs where he pushes and manipulates the h into doing what he wants and then is all smug about it. Oh, and he treats her like a child when she doesn't do what he wants. Honestly it just made me want to punch him in the face.

description

“You manipulated me into the course you wanted.” He shrugged. “So I did.”

Somehow, I thought he saw these little battles of the wit in a different light than I did. Where I saw it as a vital piece of my survival, he saw it as a game to be a won. A challenge to be overcome.

Now this probably won't get the same reaction out of other readers-but its a serious pet peeve of mine when the H just bullies the h into doing what he wants because he thinks its best. It just feels like the Aileen keeps getting backed into a corner with Liam, and to me that doesn't scream romance. I'd like a partnership please!

Aaannnddd... lets be honest if he wasn't attractive to the h it would just be downright creep town.

I am loving this heroine and I find her very entertaining. I just love how she is this weak vampire yearling who has no issues with standing up to all these powerful beings. You can see she is creating a lot of enemies but also a lot of respect for her "give no craps" attitude.

There is still not romance, however, I think I see a spark starting to form. I'm hoping I'm right because I really like the idea of her with this guy. These two are already a big part of the entertainment, along with these mysteries she's having to solve in each book. I'm gonna jump right into book #3.

I’m enjoying this series, but a few recurrent issues bothered me more in this book than in the first. There are numerous editing problems, from incorrect word choice to wrong punctuation to repeated use of the same description. (I really don’t care to read about one more set of cheekbones that could cut glass.) But what bothered me the most were some illogical or inexplicable circumstances or actions in this story.

Perhaps these and other incongruities will be addressed in the next book. I will look for it as I’m interested in finding out what happens next to Aileen. I hope some of the other issues also will be addressed.

I had high hopes after reading the Firebird Chronicles, but wasn't completely caught off guard by how much the writing irked me because I'd seen many reviewers expressing concerns about The Broken Land series (racism/colonialism, questions around consent,...). First let me be clear, my issues were not with the plot per say but rather some of the ways characters speak about their lives.
In this case, I just couldn't deal with the way the war in Afghanistan was discussed in these books. It was not central to any of the story lines since this all happened in the past, but it was this constant plot device to give Aileen depth. The persistent side mentions of seeing 'extremists who hate' and 'people throwing bombs at soldiers there to help' and 'seeing the darkest of humanity' etc just really grated on me. Then there are preformative attempts to patch up that harmful rhetoric by saying that locals also 'still protected their children' and 'showed so much love'. It just made me throw up in my mouth a bit and it popped up so many times in both books 1 and 2. Like that's supposed to walk us back from that violent portrayal of Afghanis? Shameful. And of course, we had to also hear about soldiers who 'wanted to serve their country', showed nothing but bravery, etc...Basically, making them sound like humanitarians. As a person from the Levant/Middle East, I can tell you that the 'serve their country' rhetoric falls really flat when the global north brings nothing but violence, chaos, and colonialism to our societies. How was the war in Afghanistan serving Americans? Other than serving as a massive-scale vendetta? Yes we've heard the 'liberating women' story too but it's hard to believe that when the world abandons us when we're drowning, dying, and being put in detention centres as we try to flee the disasters they instigated. So yeah, this really struck a nerve and it was so difficult to read. TA White really needs to crack open a history book. All authors have a serious responsibility to do so when linking topics around war, racism, and colonialism, even if they are doing so tangentially. One more thing- there is a brief mention of suicide that just..urgh... It described how people who die by suicide 'hurt so many of the living' and 'people left behind are often angry at them'. And then it's left at that! I get describing what happens in people's lives after a suicide, but to not then contextualize it within a compassionate or reflective lens just left such a bad taste in my mouth. Yes, this book struck many MANY nerves.
Finally, and this has nothing to do with the author, the audio book narrator just made everything worse. Aileen sounded like a high school student, constantly using annoyed and flippant tones even when it didn't fit with any of the contexts. It's difficult to listen-listen and take in serious reflections or conversations when the tone makes everything sound so immature.
This feels like a rant but it really pisses me off when I read for escapism and end up feeling so disappointed and frustrated...

Downgraded to 3-stars from 4-stars on reread #3. The FMC Aileen had no agency, and being forced to complete all types of tasks by arbitrary males didn't sit right with me. Liam honestly sucked as a love interest, and the villainous plot seemed rather haphazard to fit the stereotypical paranormal urban mystery.

Romance: Finally starting to see a hint between

This one is great, but not as good as the first. If only because it didn't feel like all the mysteries actually were solved.
Also the slow building romance... I dislike who it seems like she might be paired with because he's a jerk and she really doesn't seem into him???

So many bombs thrown her way at the end I can't wait to see how things change.

Questions I still have:
--Where does she get the bagged blood from? Seriously, this is never explained.
--Where/how did she make her own bullets? Like, what??? This was thrown in randomly istg
--What was up with the tea? THIS I think is a clue for a bigger reveal later because obviously there is something different about Aileen.
--Why can't calm and mysterious Aiden be the love interest? lol

‘Midnight’s Emissary‘ (2017) is the second book in the Urban Fantasy series featuring Aileen Travers, an Army vet turned vampire against her will and who is now trying to find her place in the secret and complex world of the supernaturals who inhabit Columbus, Ohio.

i enjoyed the first book, ‘Shadow’s Messenger‘ enough to want to follow the series to find out what Aileen has to do to survive. I liked that Aileen isn't the typical Urban Fantasy heroine. She doesn't carry a sword, wear leather, or practice mixed martial arts. She's a vampire but a very weak one and, as she refuses to take blood from the source, she's not getting any stronger. She's motivated by a stubborn determination to retain as much personal freedom as she can - something that defies the requirement placed on all newly turned vampires to spend a hundred years in the service of a vampire clan. The downsides of independence are ignorance, no one is teaching her the things she'd learn in a clan and vulnerability, she's a visible unprotected target for powerful supernaturals of all kinds.

In 'Midnight's Emissary', Aileen finds herself with a contract to work for the vampires who she has been trying to avoid which unexpectedly brings her face to face with the previously unknown vampire who sired and then left her for dead and who is now a candidate to become a Grand Poobah of the vampires.

The plot is interesting, although the pace is a little slow. I didn’t mind that as it’s really Aileen who keeps me reading. I'm fascinated by her approach to life (and afterlife). She describes herself as a Millenial and that may explain some of her expectations. I struggle to find a word that nails Aileen’s attitude. Not so much snark as smirk, except it’s a lazy, drawly smirk. A sort of contempt for how badly the world is set up and how many unreasonable but unavoidable things she is asked to do. Perhaps an oxymoron?: long-suffering impatience?” Whatever it is, her attitude amuses me and gives a fresh feel to an otherwise familiar Urban Fantasy set-up.

I'm going to stick with this series. It's entertaining and stays relatively light despite all the intrigue and violence. 'Moonlight's Ambassador' is next on my list.

The series holds up, the characters are interesting and the plots of a good level. I find that this universe draws a lot from those of Patricia Briggs or Kim Harrison, but as they are excellent references it gives a very good result, even if it lacks originality.

Welcome to Book 2 of Aileen's misadventures in the world of the supernatural.

Let me get this off my chest - I was SO ANNOYED with Aileen deciding to not share her suspicions with Liam about Thomas being her sire.

I understand why Liam didn't say anything about suspecting - he was right, if he confronted her she would have denied it and run away out of sheer stubbornness. However as things got more dangerous and it became obvious NONE of the other applicants were a safe choice, she should have SAID SOMETHING.

Liam has, aside from being the kind of overbearing asshole you'd expect in his position, at least proven that while he has an agenda where Aileen is concerned his foremost priority is the safety of their world and its inhabitants. Stephen making not so veiled threats to break Aileen? Elinor psychically assaulting Aileen for FUN and giggles? Come in Aileen, this goes beyond not wanting to be controlled straight into TSTL territory.

And what happens because she doesn't share with the class? Her best friend is kidnapped and made a werewolf after a demon tried to suck her dry.

Share. With. The. Class.

Anyhow aside from that irritation (idk why but despite this being a character trait for White's heroines in general, in Aileen its manifest as idiocy then wary caution) I enjoyed reading as the two storylines Aileen once more found herself in converged.

At this point Liam should just assume anything happening to Aileen is part of the same issue and work with the theory if they solve one the other will be solved too.

I don't much like Caroline or Peter, but I did like Nathan and oddly Robert, who while not in favor of Aileen running around clanless, seemed less like he took her being clanless personal and was more worried about the precedence it set. In this I think Liam is right - sure Aileen got lucky, she hasn't gone in a murder spree, she's had folk watching out for her. However she's a lucky EXCEPTION. Her admitting a newly turned werewolf needed collaring for their protection (as well as the general populace) was not irony, it was hypocrisy.

Does that mean a newly turned vampire (which by the way she's the only turned in decades at the moment) should be stuck in a 100 year contract to a clan that could be abusive?

No. They do need monitoring and lessons in how to survive in this new world however. Her ignorance has already caused so much pain and suffering, how could she wish that on someone without her strength of character?

I have come to the conclusion that these are the three worst words in the English language......

.....and should accordingly be banned from use by authors as they are clearly using it as a crutch to deprive and torment us the reader. Away with them I say, away…
P.S I looooved the book

Yep! As I predicted, this series is getting better with each book! The mystery in this one is engaging and kept me coming back and turning pages well into the night. Aileen’s stubborn refusal to do ANYTHING the vampires want gets really annoying - especially those times when her refusal only hurts herself… but one can understand her reasoning, even so. There is still not an iota of any romantic hope but there are a few options so I’ll keep reading.

Aileen’s character is thinking and musing over everything just to justify making the worst possible decision she could. She’s not smarting up at all, and not growing as a character either. If I have to read her say “I guess I have no choice,” One more time when in reality she’s just a busy body who will sacrifice a lot to know everyone’s business… ugh ugh ugh.

"Midnight's Emissary" finds my favorite underdog being called into the office once again. That is never a good scene as it is soon revealed that Jerry has assigned a special case to Aileen. One she cannot refuse. It soon becomes apparent that Aileen's new client is the vampire, Liam. It seem that there is a new power struggle where one of five vampires will be appointed into a position of great power and leadership. Although Aileen wants nothing to do with it, she has no choice but to take the job or risk major complications for herself and Jerry.

As Aileen begins working to uncover the information Liam is requesting a series of bodies frozen like statues are starting to show up around the city. While Aileen is curious it is not until her friend, Caroline notifies her that a teacher of theirs has become prey that she gets involved. Caroline tricks Aileen into attending a fundraising event for the college in exchange for some lineage research.

In addition to all of this Aileen has become the focus of a magical book that moves from room to room at will but also provides some much needed information regarding various species from the paranormal world. Two pixies have also claimed squatters rights at Aileen's apartment and want to establish a working relationship with her.

Everything Aileen holds dear, her freedom, friendships and desires are about to become under fire. The questions is whether or not she has the fortitude or the ability to see these challenges to the end. I really enjoyed this installment and learning more about the world that Aileen lives in. Liam and the vampire world is becoming a hotbed of interest in more ways than one. Also, the werewolves are becoming more prominent in the storyline. Peter, the socerer is still a twit but he is growing on me. I cannot wait to read the next installment in this series. T.A. White does it again!

Not as enthralling as the first, but it certainly serves to find a number of explanations to the mysteries left open by the first book. The interactions between Liam and Aileen still remain among my favorites, much more enemies to lovers than slowburn romance, which I prefer by the way. Peter I have yet to frame well, and I really appreciate Charlotte and hope they have much more space in the future.

Brax Peter & Liam are all loathsome characters.
The female main character continues to act a twit.
This entire book was filled with examples of men forcing Aileen to do things she was morally against bc they think it’s what’s best for the little woman. By the end of this book I found the lack of agency Alieen had tiresome. I suspect it will only get worse as the series goes on. I’m tapping out.

The willful attempt to remain ignorant by Aileen and the willful attempts to ignore her by the others (Liam, Thomas, Brax) was so infuriating that I could only chalk it up to author ineptitude rather than personality.
Liam’s all like “help me” and then ignores Aileen when she’s like “hey I got something for you” OR he’s like “you don’t need to know” when she really does need to know (surprise, didn’t see that coming, didja?) BUT ONLY when it’s convenient for the plot…
and my biggest issue is that when left in the dark by their own actions, they all blame Aileen and neither do they show remorse nor take responsibility from/for their actions.

I liked this book but it was extremely frustrating to read.

The Story Gets Even Better

I have fallen heavily for Aileen Travers. She’s a newbie vampire who constantly butts heads with beings more scary and powerful than she will be for centuries. She doesn’t care if she will be smushed into little bits, she just won’t be controlled. She’s a master at messing with people, a skill she didn’t master in the army, just polished and honed it.

Some time has passed since the last book and Aileen has been continuing to work as a messenger and Liam, the vampire enforcer, has left her alone. He was supposed to give her some basic help but he disappeared instead. She’s still tied to the sorcerer but he’s wearing a cuff that stops him from using magic on her, so she’s pretty safe from him. Life has been pretty peaceful, until she gets a new job. One with the vampires and it involves her sire.

This book takes Aileen further into the supernatural world. She is learning more day by day about the beings she is surrounded with. She also has to rely on her rapidly developing detective skills. Her position as a messenger leads her to all supernatural communities and gives her a somewhat neutral position, which helps her find information when others can’t. She’s very good at finding the right people to help.

The plot is complicated and subtle. It draws the reader in and reveals hidden little pieces of information as you go. It’s masterfully done, and all with the wit and intelligence of a fantastic lead character. I can’t wait to see what Aileen does next!
