Author Yi S. Ellis has compiled an interesting set of stories that illustrate the difference between Western and Asian thinking and lifestyles. Ellis was born in China, but she came to the US at the age of 13 and went to school in the States. Her husband is American. Ellis shares stories about how Americans, her husband in particular, think about the Chinese. Americans and Chinese have much in common, but the cultural differences are real and take some getting used to.
The book is peppered with colorful and interesting anecdotes about normal, everyday events, like attending a party hosted by a Chinese person or going out to eat with them. The writing is lively and is fun and easy to read. Chinese words and phrases are sprinkled throughout the text, as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as our son recently married a Chinese national. We love our new daughter-in-law, and any new insights we get into her cultural background are most welcome.
I would point out that there are several typos in the text. They are rather minor, but as an avid reader, and a book reviewer, I tend to notice these things. Perhaps they will escape your notice.
