Benyamin (born 1971, Benny Daniel) is an Indian novelist and short story writer in Malayalam language from Nhettur, Kulanada, Pattanamtitta district of the south Indian state of Kerala. He is residing in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1992, from the age of twenty, and his works appear regularly on Malayalam publications in Kerala.

പ്രവാസത്തിന്റെ നാൾവഴികൾ പറയുന്ന ലേഖനം. എങ്ങനെ കുടിയേറ്റം ആരംഭിച്ചു? എങ്ങനെ അത് തുടർന്നുപോകുന്നു? എന്താകും ഇതിന്റെ ഭാവി? എന്നൊക്കെ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഗൾഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാത്രമല്ല യൂറോപ്പ് അമേരിക്ക ആഫ്രിക്ക കാനഡ ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ തുടങ്ങിയ വിദേശരാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറിയ മലയാളികൾ തങ്ങളുടെ സാമ്രാജ്യം കെട്ടി പടുത്തുയർത്തിയ കഥ.

Benyamin discusses the Malayalee diaspora and some of its features

He starts this collection with ancient migrations in the state of Kerala. Then he makes an observation that forms a spring board for some of his analysis. The Malayalee community were not displaced from their homeland. They moved for career prospects. This goal/reason explains the behaviour of Malayalee diaspora. This explains the communities’ inclination to build huge houses in their homeland. Many of which are vacant or occupied by their octogenarian parents. Because they moved for career prospects, they plan to move back once the prospects dry up.

My favourite essay deals with an almost complete lack of cultural output from the diaspora. Considering the size of the community, there should have been more output. Their motive for leaving explains their lack to tell their story . Unlike other diasporas, they not feel alienated from their homeland. No alienation –> no desire to adapt to hosts’ culture -> no formation of a new culture ->no reason to tell their story.

Another essay deals with women’s migration and their role in the upliftment of the society back home.

I enjoyed his take on this subject. The essays are independent. But it's best to follow the sequence. It’s a good source to learn about our brothers and sisters who left us for foreign lands.

മലയാളികളുടെ ആദ്യകാലം തുടങ്ങിയുള്ള കുടിയേറ്റത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഗൾഫ് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും യൂറോപ്പിലേക്കും അമേരിക്ക ആഫ്രിക്ക കാനഡ ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ തുടങ്ങി വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും മലയാളികൾ തങ്ങളുടെ സാമ്രാജ്യം പടുത്തുയർത്തിയതിനെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് വിവരണം. പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ ഒപ്പം സ്ത്രീകളുടെയും കുടിയേറ്റത്തെ കുറിച്ച് പരാമർശിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

പ്രവാസം എന്ന പദത്തിനെയും അവസ്ഥയെയും ഏറ്റവും അധികം തെറ്റായി മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ സമൂഹങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് നമ്മുടേത്. തിരസ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്‍റെ വേദനയുടെ പേരാണ് പ്രവാസം. കുടിയിറക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്‍റെ അവസാന അത്താണിയാണ് പ്രവാസം. നിഷ്കാസിതന്‍റെ വിലാപമാണ് പ്രവാസം. ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തിൽ എവിടെയും മലയാളി പെടില്ല. Exile, Migration, Refugee എന്നീ മൂന്ന് അവസ്ഥകൾക്കുംകൂടി മലയാളി പ്രവാസം എന്ന ഒറ്റപ്പദം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഒരു വലിയ അപരാധമുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇവിടെ പ്രവാസി എന്ന പദത്തിനു പകരം കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരൻ എന്ന പദം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതാണ് കൂടുതൽ ഉചിതം എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു.

യാത്രകൾ നമ്മുടെ രക്തത്തിൽ അലിഞ്ഞുചേ൪ന്നിരിക്കുന്ന
പ്രാചീന നിലവിളിയാണ്. അതിനെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് നാം
എവിടെയെങ്കിലും സ്വസ്ഥമാകുമെന്ന് കരുതുക വയ്യ!
