Our House #1

Personne n'est parfait !

Rate this book

I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads.

The few people who actually read my book reviews know I tend to diverge from the book in some way in them. In this case I want to start by asking a question.
Why were there no modern books this good aimed at 8-13 year olds when I was 8-13 year old?
There honestly was nothing like this in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I think the standard of writing for this age group and the authors who write them have improved more than any other genre. This book is a case in point.

I am going to try to keep my review spoiler free.

Chloe Deal is a sweet, thoughtful and loving ten year old. She has a very interesting house and family. Her life is not perfect but that is not the point. There are not many books where a door is a main character and it plays into the plot as well as the Front Door does in this one. The family are all well written and I could put names to them all based on my own experiences and my perceptions of other people.

The non-family characters in the book are just as interesting too. I particularly loved one of them who Chloe meets on some early mornings. The characterisation is spot on for just about every character. You feel like you know them. The plot is constantly believable and I admit I laughed a lot, smiled a lot more and wept at one chapter towards the end.

This is a quite brilliant book for a younger reader. No, wait. This is a quite brilliant book for any reader. I would recommend it to anyone. I read many books and don't often class them as favourites but this one is a favourite already. I will also be buying the sequel and any other books in the series.

It is okay not to be perfect but this book is pretty close to it.

5 stars. It would get more if it could.

I have to say before anything else that this book has made me belly laugh more than any other book I have read this year. T. S Easton had a wickedly delicious sense of humour and any child (or any adult!!!) will be giggling away to themselves throughout this book. And there's no more wonderful sound than a child's laughter!

This is a brilliant tale of a modern family who have a rather manic family lifestyle living in an old house they have recently had to move to. And I just loved the Deal family, every single one of them! My older kids would have loved this book when they were younger as this family is as mad and chaotic as ours is! I totally empathised with mum Polly and adored Chloe and the way she brought together the rooms in her house for a school project. There were so many true to life observations here that I lost track of them. As a parent, I found it a perfect study of how families interact not only within the family unit but with neighbours, friends and others too. All the characters were true to life with their teenage hormones or their naughty antics and a special mention must go to SHOUTY DAD WHOM I THINK LIVES ON MY ESTATE SOMEWHERE!

Children aged 9-99 will adore this book! Now that I have read and approved this is now being passed into the hands of my local Primary schools lunchtime reading corner and I think years 5 and 6 are going to absolutely love it. I can't recommend it highly enough! And I'm now off to read Our House 2-Time to Shine to catch up on the Deal family antics.

I received my copy of this book from Piccadilly Press in return for my unbiased review.

a lovely story with some heart warming moments and a few giggles. Front door was our favourite chapter as we too have similar issues with ours. Didn't give the book 4 stars, as at times there was almost too much detail and my daughters attention wandered. I think this is one to read with your child.

Love that book! One of my favourite books; the characters are very amusing and humorous, especially William D! Chloe is a smart and a kind ordinary girl who loves observing things. Daisy is a perfect (almost) girl and I also love the name, William D is a laughable and fantastic boy really cute and Jacob is never there; always hanging around with his girlfriends! The parents never have enough of the family - dad always inventing those silly games like ‘Skink Hunt’ and mum always works very hard.
A lovely family living in a chaotic and crazy house.

I don’t know what to say - just adore that book ❤️

Good book for kids entering teens. There are few heart warming moments written well in the book. Harmless fun for young kids, telling them about the value of family irrespective of how diverse everyone in it is.
Would have been more enticing if there was a minor conflict or challenge or task to do (other than lawn mowing) could have been introduced mid way in the flow to progress story forward. It may just be ME as an adult feeling this way, but it is a good book overall.

I received Our House courtesy of Mr Easton and a Goodreads Giveaway. This is my son's review (he's almost 9):

Our House was an extremely funny book about a lazy and untidy family.

Their mum wanted them to tidy up the garden and the house so she left for a retreat.

While she was gone, they tried and tried to clean the house and on the day before she was supposed to return they still hadn't done anything. They spent the whole of that day mowing the lawn, cleaning up the little house and cutting back the rhododendron.

She came home early, just as the firemen arrived. I'll leave you to read the book to find out more!

In between the chapters there are little notes giving details of William D's life - William D is the youngest child in the Deal family and he is very naughty...

Highly recommended, I can't wait to read the next book.

DNF at page 30. Just a bit young for me, and I put this down last year and haven't returned.
