It is pretty amazing, but I'm giving it a whole extra star purely for its wonderful size. I was elated to discover one of my textbooks would be a lovely little handheld thing. I had already bought the old version the previous semester, but dropped the class early on when I found out that professor was insane. So, naturally I was pissed when the next semester I add the class again, thinking I already had the textbook (in fact I'd read it over the summer to get a headstart!), and then I find out that, no, actually they've changed textbooks on me! But my anger quickly evaporated when I sighted this beauty in the bookstore. :) In fact I got really excited and attached myself to it for three or four days (trying to regain my headstart). I discovered that much of the content is the same as it's bulky, semi-depressive-looking predecessor. The paper is lightweight and non-glossy (because why would you need glossy pages in an English book?) thus it really feels like you're just toting around your favorite novel. It's 1031 pages, but I have 400-page novels that have the same dimensions. It's a refreshing change from all those clumsy, floppy textbooks.

An excellent guide for the students of English literature and everyone who is interested in it. You'll find basic information about literature, as well as a very good selection of poems, fiction and drama. The book has a 'critical flaw', though. Some parts feel more like advertisement than information.

This book was a require text for an English class I took recently. It covers short stories, poetry, and plays. I like this book because, aside from the "learning" aspect, it was addicting to read the excerpts, sample stories, etc.

It's the textbook for my second-semester college freshman composition course, and it has short fiction by Junot Diaz, William Faulkner, and John Updike; lots of modern poetry; and "A Doll House" by Ibsen.

I would definitely use this as a course-required textbook for an Intro to Lit. class. It is affordable, concise, and yet surprisingly thorough.

Not a bad textbook at all. Interesting analyses of the works, and a good selection of works to study.
