Mango Blues, the latest novel in the Mango Bob series by Bill Myers. Laugh out loud funny, filled with zany characters. A fun, feel-good read! What do you say when the leader of the Russian mob asks you to take his unmarried daughter camping for a week? You say “yes” and hope you make it back alive. It won’t be easy, the daughter is the queen of the long con and has a scheme afoot to derail her father's plan. If she gets her way, there won't be any peace on Florida's Forgotten Coast. Join Walker and his bobtail cat, Mango Bob, in another wild, fun-filled romp as they travel the backroads of Florida in their motorhome.
Walker seems to be a pushover for believing anything a pretty woman tells him. This time it is Kat, who wants him to teach her how to operate the motor home and says she has reserved a campground site for them. What they are really doing is going to meet her friend Devin, a girl she used to work with while learning the ropes of the con game. So now Walker is stuck with two women, each saying the other is working a long con on him. Troubles like this, he doesn't need. We do get to see how he handles himself in an actual fight. I think it is time for Walker to get an actual girlfriend.
I made it to the 41% point (according to my Kindle), and had to just stop reading. I have enjoyed the series pretty much so far, except for Walker's inability to say no to anyone with boobs. Seriously. He is whipped by every female he has anything to do with. This book? Not one, but again two, women that do all this crazy crap and he lets them slide. Has he no sense of pride? No cajones? They lie to get him to drive all over Florida, both running cons, and he still hasn't left them at a bus station. Of course since both have hoods for fathers, the threat of bodily harm seems to make what they are doing acceptable to him. I just can't take it any more.
So sad, I just could not finish this book! The series started off so fun and this last one just does not cut it. Once again the author seems to have forgotten what was written in the book before this one and the situation is changed (so what happened the story in the third book or the one in the fourth?). There are lots of typos making it hard to read. The story line gets too ridiculous and the women characters are awful. Read the first two and stop!
Main character changed way too much from early books
Walker started out in this series as a veteran who always wanted to do the right thing and came into treasures in varied and interesting ways. His backstory gets retconned more and more each book. By this book he is an IT geek who lets female criminals push him around and get him into trouble. Disappointing downward arc for the series.
I like these mango books. They are really a short story. Lots of recaps on the previous chapter. I just read it I do not need a recap. Lots of blank end of chapter pages. If you find them used for $2. great, if not it isn't worth more. Too bad because these stories could really be good.
Fun book. I wish I was as patient as Walker. After this I’d be done with them all. Interesting characters in this book. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I just couldn't do this one. The last couple of the series pushed me a little far on the credibility vs irritation scale, and this one tipped me over on the side of irritation: Walker may be easy going and a basically nice guy, but where do these women he's agreed to help get off being so bitchy and rude? Or perhaps I'm looking at it the wrong way, and should be asking why he takes all the crap they dish out with a smile? Either way, the incredulity factor of the characters is high and the pay-off for trying to believe in them minimal. The writing just isn't rich or rewarding enough to make the struggle with unpalatable characters last a novel's length. I gave up before the first third was done.
So far Mango Bob has not disappointed. Fun, light reading and some stunning detail about Florida. However, this book, in my opinion, did not work as well. The introduction of the female characters was, to me, annoying. I realize the author gives his hero plenty of female companionship, but he could have left out all the scam artist stuff and made those women a LOT less hard to like. And he left Walker coming off as a bit of a wimp. More fascinating facts and descriptions of Florida scenery, less unlikable characters please!
DNF I tried really hard to complete this book but could no longer torture myself listening to the virtual voice narration, in two words - it sucked!!! I had read the first three books in the series, all narrated by Mike Steel who was a wonderful narrator. I’m really irritated that all of the other books in the series have been switched to virtual voice narration. There is no feeling, no emotion, no change in the voice so it makes listening difficult and it’s really weird when the characters change, because the voice doesn’t. I hope whoever made this decision will reconsider it and switch back to Mike Steel or another human! Some things should not be messed with, if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it!!! If I had the option to give this zero stars, that would have been the rating.
I read the first five of the Mango Bob Adventure series and enjoyed every one. I was away for a few months reading other things but came back to see how they were doing in their latest offering Mango Blues. I settled straight back into the moterhome passenger seat with Bob on my knee and the sunshine of Florida. We had another adventure it's as though I had never been away. Bill H Myers has an easy comfortable style and makes you feel welcome over every mile. Settling in to read the next books in the series. I would urge everyone to catch at least one of these books very enjoyable.
An exciting trip with Kat and her friend Devin. They are going to pick up a package for Kat's father, and anything that could go wrong pretty much does...including the trailer at their final destination being missing. Walker has plenty of chances to settle scores and be a hero. But who is telling the real truth? Excitement and many miles fill this fun story. I enjoyed some surprises and am amazed Walker can remain so calm!
Again I chose to give this Mango Bob book 5 stars. I've always wanted to live exactly this way: in an RV in Florida with my dogs. These stories allow me to live that life vicariously through Walker and Bob. Quick reads that I enjoy immensely due to the real places I'm Florida that they visit. It's an entertaining tour guide!! Looking forward to Mango Digger.
Great travelogue but what's with the female characters?
I enjoyed the descriptions and travel information about Florida. However, the female characters just keep getting awful with a mean girl vibe that I don't find very interesting and they just get worse with each book. Read 4 but can't finish. Also the back story keeps changing.
I love this series in part due to I've been to most of the places mentioned. It so well written that I imagine what a great life Walker and Mango Bob have together. I'm looking forward to reading the next book which is already downloaded on my Kindle.
I love 99% of the Mango Bob stories. The only problem I have is that all the women are rude. Many women have manners and don’t order other people around. That said, I love all the ones I have read to date.
Interesting characters and places. I like the series and will read the next one. The lead character is a real follower so he seems managed by the women but I think he is just in it to see what happens.
Bob and Walker together with Kat head to the Port St. Joe, FL area for another adventure. Unexpected things happen along the way and that’s when the fun starts. Another good clean story.
Good read as always. A bit boring and repetitive in parts (back story from earlier books). Nevertheless, still a pleasant way to spend a few laid back uncomplicated hours in a quiet, unstressful day. Looking forward as usual to opening up the next book in the series.
Lacked some of the intrigue of the previous books but was still enjoyable. Have only been to Florida once many years ago and I am sure it has grown tremendously since then! On to the next road trip!!
And the adventures of Mango Bob & (Johnnie) Walker continue. This 6th in the series of 11 did not disappoint. They are all fairly short and easy reads. But Bill Myer knows how to grab your attention from the beginning and hold you to the end & wanting more.
